  • Finally, let the build series begin!
    You've asked for it, and now we are making it a reality!
    The goal of this video was to present what we have learnt over the past few years of building/running this DIY outboard; in hopes to make your DIY projects slightly easier😃
    And remember, do as we say, not as we do😉
    Next up in the build series, a look at the electronics that power this setup!
    EDIT. Part two is here! • Make your own electric...
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    A rough list of what is needed for a DIY electric outboard conversion:
    Recommended aluminium thickness for bottom plate: 3mm or more if using more powerful motor
    Aluminium thickness for a cover: 1.5mm
    Stainless steel or aluminium everything!
    Stainless steel bolts, M6, machined heads: www.amazon.com/Socket-Screws-...
    Stainless steel nuts:

    I have a 3hp old Johnson motor that I'm thinking about doing this too since the motor is passed it's prime. What I would like to do is put the original hood and lower cowling over the electric motor to keep the classic look.

    • @johndehosson
      @johndehosson  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Tim!
      Jack here!
      Love that idea! Personally wanted to do it with this one, but for ease of installation with the original design (non flipped axle) we just built a custom box. An original hood would also have enough space to accommodate some sound proofing! That would make it a really quiet setup for trolling or simply not waking the neighbours😃
      Good luck with your project! Keep us up to date👍

      Hi @Daniel Galvin!
      Thanks for dropping by! A bunch of parameters need to be decided when choosing a motor. I'm sure you could get a washing machine motor to work, but it could be tricky when pairing with controllers, batteries etc.
      There are some good quality motors, which aren't too expensive, like the one you can get from our website, which are probably much better to use. At the same time, it could be a real lot of fun getting a washing machine motor to work!

    Great project and one I’m itching to do. Bit late to the party but could you explain exactly how the cooling works for the motor? Are the tubes just stuffed in the box or is there some kind of liquid heat exchanger in that motor?
    Also I’m thinking if you used the original cowl with some judicious venting you might be able to manage the heat more easily due to the likely larger internal air space.

    • @johndehosson
      @johndehosson  7 месяцев назад +1

    What are you cooling since there is no combustion engine?

    • @johndehosson
      @johndehosson  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi there @mr.mikesart7111 !
      Jack here!
      Believe it or not, but electric setups generate quite a bit of heat as well! Especially if you run them right on the limit of their specifikations as we do😅
      To mitigate this issue we ran two cooling loops from the impeller. One through the motor, and one through the ESC. As said, if you are willing to settle for a 'milder' tune, you could possibly get away without cooling, but since we want all the power we can get, cooling is our only option, unless we rebuild the setup with "over-speced" components. However that would add unnecessary cost & weight.
      Thanks for watching! Feel free to subscribe for more electric builds⚡

    I don't quite get how you cool the motor. Is it just air cooling and the air is cooled by having the hose go through the casing?

    • @johndehosson
      @johndehosson  11 месяцев назад +2

      Hey there @tilmaen!
      Jack here!
      The motor is being water cooled. The plastic hoses you see run from the original piping of the bottom unit, from the impeller, up through the motors internal water cooling jacket, and out the back of the casing👍 Water cooling is absolutely necessary unless you run the motor at very low speeds! These things produce a lot of heat, and can potentially fry themselves within minutes if not cooled properly!
      Hope that answers your question!
      Thanks for watching🍻

    Nice conversion. Two questions: 1) Which videos (if any) explain the cooling system, and the motor specs? 2) Maybe my currency conversion was goofed up, but are you really selling a stand-alone electric motor (raw part) for $5,000 USD?

    • @johndehosson
      @johndehosson  Год назад +2

      Hey onesimpleidea!
      Jack here!
      1) On this build we are cooling the motor of of the stock impeller in the bottom unit. We just ran some plastic tubing from the old water cooling pipes, to the inlet of the motors water cooling jacket👍 (The ESC and battery for this setup where air-cooled)
      You can find the specs on the motor here: www.marsons.se/marsons-omv1-zq5hxp
      2) Yes, something must have gone wrong. The motor will cost ~500-550 USD (~5000 SEK) with shipping included, once it goes on sale😊 Sorry for the inconvenience, I will check the site to see if there is anything I can do.
      I hope this answered all your questions😊

      @@johndehosson Hi. Thanks for the good reply. One suggestion -- next time it seems to fit when you're making a video, you should explain the cooling system in more detail. I've basically eaten plant-based for years, and my physical ability is classed as "elite sportsperson. When I found out I had MS a few months ago, I educated myself extensively in the topic, and have trimmed a few things that i identified could be improved. Together with great medication, I am doing really well.

    To increase the efficiency and finally the autonomy, it would have been better to put the motor in a Pod and have it directly drive the propeller, under the boat.

      Hey there @tonyrebeiro !
      Jack here!
      I fully agree! Pod motors are the way to go. HOWEVER, they are more difficult to build for all the DIYers out there, and so far, we haven't found a pod off the shelf that is powerful enough for our needs. When we do, you can bet that we will switch to it!
      We are as a matter of fact testing a few now, so we will have a video out in a few months concluding our tests!

      Thanks for watching!

    Why even keep the impeller at all instead air cooled?

      Thanks for your idea @u812grern7 , but air cooling isn't enough for our application, so we use water-cooling🍻😅

    So that motor is 12 kv? or 80kv?

    • @johndehosson
      @johndehosson  5 месяцев назад +1

      @detochosp4876 It is 80kv /John

      It has nothing to do with power. 80Kv = 80rpm/ volt . So if you drive it with 100v , it is possible to get 8000rpm.

    So…it only leaked oil when it had oil, and only until it ran out of oil?
