In the early 1970's this was fairly common, someone's would bolt a 100 plus horsepower motor on a jon boat and fly, and that was the first fast bass boats. A lot of times they would bolt a piece of aluminum to the back of the transom to strengthen it then add a couple of 2x dimensional lengthwise, and secure to the ribs and then bolt the motor up as high as far as possible and this was the first jack plate. You had to have a bud and a big cooler up front to keep the nose down as the boats were usually just fourteen to sixteen foot. They would run those old two blade brass or bronze props designed for hydroplanes quite often and they would shine that bronze with basso until the Prop looked like black hills gold. Every boat was raw white , green or aluminum. Things were simple in those days and anyone could afford to go fast. It's really nice how they have complementary hoses for flushes out on the docks. Gets rid of the salt in the cooling system as fast as possible. I wish we had those down in the docks of NC.
Used to fish with a buddy that had a 115 Evinrude on a 15' Bumble Bee. You could feel the boat come out of the water and kick a little to the right. Had to be doing around 55 to 60. Doing 50 in a Jon boat and catch a 15 mph head wind gust would certainly create dirty diaper situation.
Nice runs there, still looks manageable - good length on the boat and nice to have that long tiller! That motor sounds great - nice to hear a two stroke again.
Brandon S Yates Sr. More pitch will give you more speed at the same rpm because the blade travels a farther distance through the water than a lower pitch prop. You add pitch until you run almost redline without hitting rev limiter. I lake test boats almost everyday at the dealer I work at
super pickle that’s how we set em up at the dealer I work at. Add pitch until it don’t hit the limiter anymore and you will get the top speed and a good hole shot out of it
Two issues first is as said already your way under proped at that weight/load... And your running way to wet... 4 or 5 degrees of positive trim and you will be really quick... It's super under propped tho as you are on the limiter even pushing that much water so it would carry weight really well. Prop pitch increase and properly trimmed it will run low 50s. If you are taking out 2 people plus your self and gear I would leave it as it is because it will carry the weight with very little loss in speed.... With 2 more people in the boat and some trim to get some boat out the water and i bet it would still run 41-42... It's always nice to have the prop to carry weight.. It really sucks when your boat is propped for a lighter load and then you load it down and just getting the hull to lift takes forever and you can't get any rpm... On our bass boats we always prop to carry two people a full gear load out and full live well and fuel.. It cost or 5 to 7mph on the absolute top when it's just one person, empty live wells, 1/4th tank of fuel and not much gear BUT it's always nice knowing that I have a prop that will respond quickly when the water vets big and blow out is unlikely when trimmed down and running tight creeks (high pitched props do not like pushing water when you bury the trim and the boats super wet... They only perform when your padded out and wot)... I may leave it as it is if it was me so i could carry people and gear really well...but if your looking for speed you need pitch and trim again its on the limiter anyhow but your running super wet... If you get the boat out the water some the ride will be far better at the back of the boat as well.... In this video it looks like you need about 3 to 4 degrees trim up based on how much hull is in the water at wot.
You need to change the propeller to one that will get the engine to turn its max rated rpm. I feel like you could do 55 with that boat and engine if the boat holds up
That thing should be in the 50s. Trim the mtr up and raise the mtr so your propshaft is in line with the bottom of the hull. And get a more aggressive prop.
If you look at CFR 183 the calculation for that boat supports a 110 HP remote steer, so contrary to public opinion it isn’t the lack of strength in the transom that drives the max HP rating of a boat. But the tiller handle isn’t a great idea with that much Hp, thankfully the handle is long!
I have a 1436 with a 30hp and a OTF jack plate and run 42. If you get a 3 blade with a little more pitch I guarantee you’ll run about 55-60 before you flip
how is that possible i thought that transom was gonna rip right out what did you do to the transom to be able to handle that!?!? i really want to do that
Nice video and you're lucky. All it takes is to hit one sand bar or piece of floating debris and you'll go from a RUclips video to a channel 2 news story overnight.
I like it. Seems like it should be faster. I've got a similar 16' jon that has done 46.2 on 2 occasions and I'm only running a 50 on a jack plate. On glass I'd only get 40, but with some chop it picks up a little more. Could be weight distribution and trim is affecting your speed. I'm running console steer a little further forward.
@@kjruff7786 I've found if you look around some of the smaller prop companies have some amazing props. I had a 16' alumacraft with a 98 40hp Johnson that would go 46 mph and that boat was a lot heavier than what you got, check the prop to see if it's the right size or you could have a spun rubber bushing on the prop that's a bad ads motor and in good looking shape

Just out of curiosity, what is the length and width of that Jon Boat?. I currently have a 20hp Mariner on my Jon Boat and I was thinking of mounting a 65hp Mercury on it.
If you want more speed try trimming it up some not to wear it blows out but if you trim it up some where the prop don’t have as much drag in the water it will allow the prop to spin faster there for the boat will run faster
I used to run 45 mph all day long with my 13' Boston Whaler and a Johnson 50 hp. 2 stroke. I would think you could do much faster with a 90 on that light boat.
Looking at the hole shot of that boat, very quick, makes me think he has the wrong prop for his application. It's like running your car in first gear. I bet with the correct prop you could get over 55 mph although I don't think I would want to do that in that boat. The 13' Whaler was rated for a 45 hp. motor but if you ordered the special transom you could put a 50 on it. Mine had that and a 50 Hp. Evinrude 2 stroke. It felt like you were flying at 45 MPH. I can't even imagine how fast it would go with a 90.
I've been seeing alot of comments saying "it should be faster I go that fast with a 50 horse.". Some people need to realize that when a boat is light enough. Eventually the motor is spinning full speed because there isn't enough resistance to keep it accelerating with that setup I'd say put a 4 blade with a steeper pitch on it
This motor on the right boat set up correctly with right prop will run 70 gps.they made the 90 two strokes 3 and 4 cylinders. This one is a 3 cylinder which will run 70mph gps on a allison or other fast hull boats.
Very cool.....are you in the Melbourne area? Looks familiar. I saw a video years ago where a guy took a same sized boat and out a Johnson 120 on it......crazy!
I had a 16ft with a 40 evinrude tiller. That thing would stand itself strait up with no wind. It was legit hard to get on plane into the wind without a person on the front. It would do 40 in very calm water. Can't imagine what a 90 would do.
@@lbbradley55 you said " 24 would skip a bit first But if he gets it hooked up he may catch up.?" which made me think you meant cavitation. a surfacing prop always cavitates to spin it up faster (exhaust exits the sides of the prop, not through it like a normal one unless it's vented) then grips like a second gear once on plane. What did you mean by "skip a bit" out of curiosity?
Just curious, how is the torque steer on a tiller controlled 90? Reason I ask is I just installed hydraulic steering on my Yamaha 90 2 stroke because the torque steer was horrible. It was hard enough to hold a straight line with a steering wheel, I couldn't imagine how bad it would have been had it been a tiller. By the way, that Baystar hydraulic steering was a breeze and is flat out awesome. Also, you should be able to go much faster than 44 with that 90 on the back of that lil bitty jon boat. How long is the motor's shaft? With the plate all the way up, the ideal position for the the centerline of the prop should be about 3.5" below the pad of your transom. Give or take an inch.
If you're fighting to hold the wheel, your trim tab is off. You should be able to let go of the wheel. Had the same 90. Once I got it adjusted right it was smooth steering. Same with my tiller motors. I can let go of the handle at WOT.
@@dh450, trust me brother, I adjusted that trim tab throughout it's full range incrementally and never could get it to where it wasn't a struggle. To be fair, my prop has custom cup job as I use it on a 16' Scandy White open pro tunnel. I think the highly cupped prop may have had something to do with my torque steer issue. Either way, it's 100% better now.
The most impressive thing is how well that 90 pushed the weight of this dudes massive balls.
Seriously though that’s crazy!

Especially when they have a lot of pitch. Wasn't sure what that was in reference to.
I see Gheenoe going faster than that...! Lol
@@Texcajun06 I got you. Good deal!
Hey is it normal for my outboard to throw a lil bit of stem every once in a while? I just replaced my impeller as well.
Did you ever try more prop?
