WLtoys 144001 new brushed motor
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 фев 2020
- WLtoys 144001 gets a new 17t 540 motor today. I picked up two brushed motors to try in the WLtoys144001 buggy. One is GoolRC 17t 540 motor and the other is an Apex RC 21t 550 motor. This buggy will be converted to brushless soon.
If you have any questions please ask in the comments.
I answer a few questions and share a few ideas.
For clarification, this is not an IR thermometer. It measures ambient air temperature. It was a bit misleading the way they worded it and/or I wasn’t paying close enough attention. It’s ok because I needed the no-contact tach and I already have an IR no-contact thermometer.
It does say on the pic it’s not an IR thermometer. MY BAD for being in a hurry.

Kari Kepala Gajah thank you very much. I don’t even remember how long I’ve been doing that.
In home electronics almost everything is threaded into plastic. Sometimes simple little tricks that make a big difference.
Thanks for watching and for your support. Have a great day!
I have to learn what the difference between brushless and brushed motors are. I'm sure you have a video on it. Wow, I didn't know you could do the water break in! That's cool. I can't wait until I can get a RC. I like how you do all these test. Great job David!👍😊
307 Wyoming 4E thanks for your kind words. 🙏💯👍🏻
This is kind of a tough hobby to get into without throwing away money. If you don’t know anyone in it it’s more difficult.
I’m just trying to give people a starting point for buying a car and doing less expensive upgrades.
Thanks again and have a great day. 💯👍🏻👍🏻
@@RCModSquad appreciate it!😊
Don't know if that's your first Apex. But I have 8 and I've had 100% success with them. thanks for sharing the break in good to know
MyPassionRC- Studio XD40 Lou's RC Garage Good morning my friend. It is my first and I haven’t run it yet but I will say just from looking at it it looks and feels great. The magnets feel really strong. I’m pretty sure I’ll be ordering more.
Have a great day! 👍🏻💯👍🏻
Finally figured out what was wrong with my car. Turns out the main gear coming out from the motor had one tooth that was a little bit crocked. I'm fairly certain this is what made it rattle so much.
First tried it with a half charged 2s battery and was honestly not very impressed.
Put in a 3s battery I had that fit well and it runs like crazy! Completely different car and it just skidds around in the little snow / ice we got here now.
I did feel the esc and it was warm to the point where I could hold my finger on t for 6s before it got to the point where I felt I was burning myself.
How warm can it get without being damaged? Will take the ir thermometer on it tomorrow and check the temperature. Might get one of those small fans and put on it since I'll definitely keep running it on 3s if I can. So much more fun.
Thanks for another good video.
Avecforte so were you able to straighten the gear? I think I would try to stay below 125°. You could probably go a little higher but the cooler it runs the longer it will last.
I’m planning to try and increase the size of the heatsink if it’s not too much of a pain.
Mine is definitely faster in 3s but it’s pretty peppy on 2s with a good battery.
I’ll try to get out a GPS in the morning if things work out.
Have a great day.
@@RCModSquad I first tried to get a dremel in there but it was too tight.
Eventually just used a small metal file that I have a whole set of. Worked quite well and even though you can see it it's much more even now.
It was as if though one tooth had been bent on the middle about 1mm or so which made a little piece that kept bumping into the plastic gear.
Found a thread online about it and apparently its not an uncommon thing.
Avecforte interesting. I’m happy you found it.
Hey, love the video and look forward to them all the time. Please keep up the hard work and excellent information that you keep putting out.
idawave1494 thank you for your very kind words. I hope it helps a few people.
Have a great day! 👍🏻👍🏻
@@RCModSquad hey I was wondering if you knew what size the screw is that goes into the servo at the arm, mine died and I pulled it but dropped and lost the screw. Any info helps
idawave1494 i don’t know off hand but when I get home tomorrow evening I’ll check for you.
Most of the ones going into metal have been 3mm but the length is a little different.
In case I forget be sure and ask me again. 😂
@@RCModSquad thanks so much.
idawave1494 if you’re talking about the one that holds the arm onto the servo I just pulled mine off so I could measure it. It’s 2.5mm x 6mm. And it’s a course thread for plastic.
I hope that helps.
How did you figure what motor will work with that ESC? I know from past experence that you cant just use any motor in the WLtoys with the stock ESC it will burn up the esc. I would prefer a rebuildable motor over the stock WLtoys motor but i know that i cant just pick anything it needs to pull a similar amps or ill be replacing the esc next. nvm i watched the rest of the video and i see you did fry the esc thats kinda what i figured Ive found anything lower then say a 27T motor pulls way more amps then a stock default wind 540 motor.
Yep! The stock ESC won’t handle much. It you stick around 27t you should be good.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be safe out there!
Hello bud. Nice video. Quick question if I may? When I did the video on using 1:10 wheels on my 144001 I was warned that I can cause damage on the drive train etc due to the extra stress of the larger diameter wheels and mine where much smaller than yours. Do you think it can cause damage. I think they also said extra strain on the stock esc/motor but you won't have that problem but could that in your opinion also happen? Cheers buddy. Have a great day! 😊
I did in fact kill the ESC with these tires.
The large tires change the final drive ratio so it loads all the drivetrain up as well as the ESC and motor. I haven’t killed any gears YET but I’ve killed all the stock ESC’s.
Kinda what my goal is is a bit like yours. You try and show people how to fix cars for free or little output of money. I try to show people what will happen if they do some of these mods so basically I’m suggesting things for people NOT to do.
In doing this I can help people not do things that will over time break something. I’ll also end up in the long run with the best bang for your buck mods that actually do work and should hold up.
Those big tires for example are a terrible choice for speed runs since they ballon like crazy on 3s and make the car difficult to drive but they give you ground clearance for grass and they handle sand and jumps better. BUT they will kill the stock ESC pretty quick without a fan and probably shorten the life of the motor.
Take care buddy! Have a great day.
Is it possible to use arrma typhon mega 550 brushed motor in it?
The motor should fit but if you have the 12t the ESC might not handle it. You could try it on 2s and keep a close eye on your temps.
Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous day.
@@RCModSquad was thinking to haul the brushed system from my typhon to 144001 as I will be upgrading my typhon to brushless.
Michael K it will bolt in but you need to watch the temperature really close.
I'm running a 13t motor from surpass hobby but it does not engine brake and everything appears to be correct ie esc set to f/b/r and wires are the correct way as in goes fast forward and slower in reverse. So I guess my setup is correct but it just free wheels when I brake any ideas on why the only thing I've done differently is I've soldered my wires to the tabs on the outside edge as apposed to in center like u did. I'm stumped as to why it doesn't stop unless these motors just don't ? Or could it be my wire placement on motor any help would be greatly appreciated as I've kinda got the idea to do this from your 13t video when u got 44mph love the vids keep em coming.
Sorry you’re having issues. I’m not sure why there’s no braking. The solder location shouldn’t be a factor.
It sounds like you have the jumper in the correct spot. You would have to dig up the spec sheet on the ESC you have to see if there is any programming changes available. Some allow changes in the brake % and punch rates.
@@RCModSquad thanks im sure that it is braking but really week my esc does not appear to be programmable i just took it for a run did about 4 passes and it was nearly toast. Melted a bullet connector from esc and the motor got so hot it started to unsolder its self little drops on plate doh! so I've repaired it and limited it to 50% on controller. To limit the current a bit thankyou for ur quick reply tho I'm sure its brushless time for me as this setup i have is hassle. I've nicknamed my red 144001 as little inferno as it like to burn lol. No sweat was hoping a 13t motor would be a good stock replacement. I'm questing that less turns equates to more current draw. Its all a learning curve.
hello, is it possible to drive a 16turn brushed motor on 6s battery (22,2v), and not destroy the brushes after a second ? thank you !
You would need to look at the specs for that motor and you would also need an ESC rated for 6s.
I wpuld be scared to grab that motor in the water while plugged in lol and i put some screws on the back and front swing arms so i can lower or raise the car like a suspension limiter it fixed the vibration problem and the holes are already there for you to add the screws i think i used 4mm screws
831 fpv great tip on the travel limiter. Distilled water doesn’t conduct electricity, although with the crud from the motor floating around it might be a little conductive. It’s only 3v dc though.
Have a great day and thanks for watching. 🙏💯👍🏻

Hi.
Why you put this 540 motor?
This motor have more power than 550 motor?
Amazing work have you do, teaching people about rc cars 😉
I am still waiting for more videos 😉
Rui M thanks for watching and thanks for the question. The stock 550 motor was a 17turn and this 540 is a 17turn.
This is a bit of a broad statement but the 540 will probably turn more RPM than the 550 did so it should have a little more speed but might be a little slower from the start.
One other reason I picked this is because it would be easy to rebuild.
I also have the 550 21turn that I will put in this buggy.
I’m just trying a variety of motors to help other people decide what they might want.
Not everyone want to do a brushless conversion so I thought I’d try and show a few less expensive option.
@@RCModSquad, thanks 😉

Jesse B Motors me too. LOL I’m getting a bit frustrated because my job puts so many hours before I can get back to it.
Thanks for watching and have a fabulous day my friend. 🙏💯👍🏻
Bought one of these of Amazon for a physics project (we're making electric cars and racing them down the hallway) anyway, I soldered a couple of wires to a switch and a port for a 7.4v 20 watt lipo, and it isn't working. It's been a while since I've done much in the rc hobby, but I assume that this motor should work by itself directly to a battery with no esc. The problem is as soon as I turn the switch on, the motor starts then immediately stops by itself about half a second later. When it does briefly run, it has virtually no torque or speed. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks
It sounds a bit like your battery is dead. 🪫 I’m assuming your motor has two wires. There is a model with a brushless motor.
Did you try running through the ESC with the remote to be sure everything was working?
Brushed motor, battery is charged. I don't have a esc as we aren't making them rc, we're just turning them on and putting them on the floor and seeing whose group passes the finish line first. Since it's a brushed motor and not brushless I'm assuming that I don't need a esc to run it. Any other ideas? Am I missing something or could it just be defective? Thanks for the help
@@clmfilms8103 it could be defective. That’s why I wondered if you tried the motor in an RC car.
It’s just a DC motor so if you connect the + terminal to the motor then connect the - to the switch and the other terminal on the switch to the - on the battery.
Can you list links to your purchased items in the descriptions of your videos? I would love those wheel spacers and the tach thermometer.
I put the lols in there for you. I was incorrect about the tachometer also being a thermometer. There’s a complete explanation in the description.
Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous day.
@@RCModSquad dang ive been searching all over for that tachometer/heatgun finally thought ide come here and see if there was a part number in the description. Its funny they should come out with a heat gun/tachometer we need just that all in 1 device

Awesome! 👍🏻👍🏻 Did you put a fan on the ESC? The stock ESC probably won’t last very long without a fan unless you just do short speed runs.
I wonder about the dogbones leading to the knuckles? They are strong but I have noticed they twist easy so how does this get affected by larger wheels.
The Apple man aka Collin Matthews I had any problems with the dog bones so far. My only problem has been with the ESC.
I don’t recommend the big tires or 3s for this car.
I think I'm going to drop a super stock bz in mine.
You got a couple bent axles there man....my car is smooth a slick eather way in my hand and or on the ground...if it does vibrate something is bent or gears need lubes or addressed...
Nothing bent and everything is greased. The car actually benefits from droop screws. There were a lot of people on the early version of the car that complained about the same problems.
I was just demonstrating that there was nothing wrong with their car. Droop screws make a huge improvement, especially for the people doing speed runs.
There have been a lot of upgrades on this car in the last three years.

@@admin5322 I never had any issues with other motors not working properly. The biggest problem was trying to run motors with to few turns over heating the ESC.

but in motors with brushed brushes brushed brushes do brushes wear out? That is, if the charcoal is consumed the engine is to be thrown away? 🙄
With motors like this one the brushes can be replaced.
Dont know if that esc can handle that motor. Mine did the Same with my 13t motor of your same kind. If you have another brushed esc laying around u should try it
prof3ssor ghana I think it should be ok with the 17t or the 21t on 2s if I go back to the stock tires. I have a new ESC ordered.

Ok give it and go when u got time.
Can you add a fan for the speed control using the LED 2pin port? I ran mine on 3S and it's real hot after a run. Any suggestions on a particular fan that would work/fit in the car and the port?
Great video btw, bummer about your esc. The top end speed on 3s with those big tires would be crazy, I'd guess 55-60mph

It's a shame that the grub screw is a bitch to get out, because it would have made life a lot easier. I have to get a butane torch i think, which I didn't really want to buy😒. But WLtoys are good quality and fun to play around with. Although I had to reassemble the front and back arms, as they were not assembled correctly when I got them delivered. Every time🤨. That kinda pissed me off. The steering handles better when the arms are all aligned. As many ppl have complained why the steering is wonky. Although there does tend to be some misaligning anyway, with a foot turning out more. Playing around with the steering trim helps a lot with counterbalancing that. Otherwise, the 144001 is probably the better performer overall in their range. And it also tends to out perform most other rtr models. Even those bigger in size. And it has the greater speed capability. Not that it's even necessary to go as fast as 80-100+klm😜.
I hope some day they learn what loctite is. 😂 I think for the money they are a good value. This car is plenty fast on a 2s LiPo. It’s also fun for the speed run folks. It’s pretty easy to make one go fast.
Thanks for stopping by and the comment. Have a great night and be safe out there!
@@RCModSquad I was very impressed overall. I thought very affordable and great value. Which i must add, is a rare thing to come across. Thats probably why so many ppl have doubts at first. I am used to Tamiya models from many yrs ago, and I found WLtoys to be more impressive, taking into account of being ready to run, and of parts availability for added convenience. I have two which I'm in the process of upgrading to brushless. The brushless system is a bit trickier I found, with having to calibrate the ESC. I still haven't mastered that perfectly. I'm just getting back into rc cars you see, and I'm not sure about a lot of things. But I find persistent practice is what makes the difference. As I usually tend to lose my temper first a few times, before I get the hang of something😖. Its a bad habit, but it usually works. And you're right, 2s is fast enough for having good fun. Anything else is either a downright display of showing off, and/or careless dangerous use. 3s is still fine, so long as speed is controlled. I don't think it is designed to handle 4s, but I have seen ppl try, clocking up speeds of around 100miles an hour. Faster than a lot of road cars at overtaking speed🧐. Oh well, someone always has to try these things out and push their luck.
@@MrTurboCat21 the speed run folks really get into it though. 😃

Which is better and more powerful the 550 motor of the wltoys 144001 or the 540 of the 959b?
el swaizer thanks for stopping by. For the same number of turns the 540 usually has more speed and the 550 has more power but is a bit slower.
I like the type of wheel you have mounted, but would the stock motor struggle with the size of them and overheat?
+swalstar thanks for stopping by. Yes, I think those wheels are too big and load the ESC and motor up too much.
If you just do short speed runs it might be ok but I also think bashing with them would be tough on the gears too.

How many cells does it use Battrey and how many amps of esc
With the 17 turn motor I ran it on a 1060 hobbywing and I ran it on 2s and 3s.
I’m now using a 13 turn on the 1060 hobbywing and just running it on 2s.

20 minutes for a no go! 🤔 Lmao! Can I request that you don't do the new motor test with those tires to make it more relative to what others would be doing? Just a thought... Thanks for sharing. Nice pillow you got there my bro...✌️😁👍
Mikes RC Garage LOL. IKR I agree. I’ll probably save those tires for the brushless motor. The ESC would cut out on 2s with the wheels off the ground.
I ordered a new ESC but it won’t be here for a few weeks so I’m thinking a plan B might be to rob the ESC off of car one then put the stock tires on it and do a GPS test. The stock motor did 30mph on both cars on 2s so I agree with you, that that would be a more relevant test.
Thanks for all the great suggestions my brother. 🙏💯👍🏻👍🏻
@@RCModSquad You're very welcome my bro! Just to see if it's the esc is bad maybe plug the car with the new motor into your other cars esc and see if it will spin up that new motor without cutting out!? Also vice versa... It seems like the leeds on the motor would be long enough to try that just so you know the esc is bad! As for the bigger tires get a metal spur gear first, that plastic gear is not going to last long! Have a safe week my bro! 🙏💯🏁
Oh and one more thing lol! Maybe that's what that magic diode/resistor/capacitor/??? Lol does, you can take it off the burnt motor and solder it to the new motor and see what happens??? 🤔 Lol! Sorry my bro but I got lots of ideas to suck up any free time you may have! ✌️😝👍
Mikes RC Garage I already ordered the metal spur gear. I already tried the diode in and out. I could add a 500 uf capacitor to support the voltage input but I suspect it’s in the ESC LiPo low voltage shutdown that’s the problem.
I’ll rip this ESC apart and check the components IF any of them have numbers on them. A lot of the Chinese stuff uses proprietary or unlabeled components.
The ESC is just barely stuck in anyway so I can swap them out in about a minute. 🤔😂
