TXG Tour Experience Golf it'd be G400 Max as I certainly do not want a club that has a bias to be open at address like the Sub Zero is. I'm only 13hcp so that's just be Hcp suicide. I can't rave enough about this video, you guys are going places. I foresee this channel at 100k subscribers in the near future. Keep up the stellar work gents. I watch Mark Crossfield, Rick Shiels, Peter Finch, and Me and My Golf, but for club fitting and interacting with fans nothing compares to what you're doing. Wow.
Easily the best video involving driver fitting on RUclips. Too many people chasing the longest driver or launch monitor #'s that they think they need. Keep up the great content guys.
I smiled when you mentioned Ping as your second driver. I purchased a G25 a few years back and thought it was a miracle driver. I was in the fairway on almost every hole. I quickly added a 3,5 and hybrid of the same model and now have complete confidence in my long game for the first time in 50 years. Anyone struggling to hit metals straight should at least try Pings. They are a perfect compliment to Mizuno irons and Vokey wedges.
This was an amazing video. I watch alot of the youtube golf channels and the content on this video is as good as any. By the way, I purchased the Max. I hit a ball during my fitting low heel and basically half the ball print was on the face so almost a miss. The ball was obviously 30 yards shorter but it was basically on the center line. It was crazy. Golf is about how good your misses are and misses with the Max are better then any driver out there.
I’d pick whichever club gives me the most accuracy. Case in point, I can outdrive my 70-year-old dad by 80+ yards, but he still shoots lower than me 6/10 times. And he’s always in the fairway!
Weirdly this video helped me tune my SZ rogue. I now play a little more loft, split the weight 9+7gm and have a mid spin shaft to get something close (from lots of range and course experiments) to the red line numbers. Wish I could come in for a fitting but this info is gold dust for those of us who can't (In NZ)
Hi, all the way from Ireland. Great video guys. Really opened my eyes. I recently got a fitting and the fitter convinced me to switch from the standard Ping G which was the most accurate driver I've ever played, to the Ping G LST, seducing me with the lower spin and longer drives. When on the course, I found that I couldn't hit a fairway with the Ping G LST and my scoring has suffered big time. Just waiting to get the money together, so I can go back to a driver with more back spin. Thanks for the insight and keep up the great work.
As an older golfer (over 70) who has only about 5 years into this game, you two guys want to make me fly up to Toronto and get fitted. But.... I’m just not sure I’m even ready for that because I’ve got so much to learn about this game and so little time. But I do love it!
I am amazed at how important fitting is, and how minor adjustments (e.g., reducing G400 Max loft 1.5*) made such a big difference to spin and ultimately, distance. Great video.
I was fit last Summer for the G400 at Ping - loved it but then tried the GMax with the same shaft (stock Alta CB 55gm tipped 3/4") and gained way more control. Max head is incredibly stable and has basically eliminated low spin knuckleball flight with very little curvature (still getting used to that vs my natural 10 yard draw). My Gmax average clubhead speed has been 106mph, ball speed 156mph, spin rates consistently ranging 2100-2500rpm (Winter practice with Trackman)...putting GMax thru its paces right now in the Caribbean. Greetings to all from Aruba :)
Best described as rugged coastline golf played in an outdoor convection oven. It's 91 degrees with a steady 25mph tradewind...driver goes 250 into it or 325 riding it. A good problem to have :-)
Awesome video. People post a lot of reviews based on personal feelings, but factual solid data gives so much more information so that consumers can make informed decision. Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos and understand performance is individual based. I seem to find a lot of sites showing driver swing speeds well over the average swing speed of most weekend warriors which are the majority of golfer which fuel the industry. I would like to see an actual fitting -distance and accuracy as you have done here - with driver swing speeds of 75, 85 and 95 mph swings and see what kind of findings you come up with regarding club selection, shafts. lofts and they type of ball they should be using. Keep up the good work.
Once again, the best fit is not always the longest club. Sometimes our egos get in the way of what makes sense for a good score. These fitting scenarios present a great example on how a fairway finder can be dialed in to catch up with the length of the bomber on the rack. I just ordered a g400max a week before this vid came out. This vid just confirmed what I already knew........my Epic SZ was long but not reliable enough to improve my card. The best part is, with a couple of tweaks, the g4max wasn't far off my longest result. Best of both worlds. For me, this last fitting will be the first time I will be using a shorter shaft.
You guys are the best club fitting outfit out there, bar none. I have learnt so much about club composition, functionality and how we should think about club make up from your content. It has also shown how much I've been shortchanged in prior fittings. Regarding this video, the choice is clear to me...Ping G400 Max. Better accuracy, great stability and the ability to optimize for distance, it is a fairway finding monster when finetuned.
Great videos gents! Content is great and you rarely leave me with questions after the video, ex. Going with less loft on the Ping, to totally complete the picture! Outstanding job, and you clearly are setting the bar for fitting... now I need to fly to TO apparently...!
Hey guys love your show, I had a callaway epic sub zero 9* with a Mitsubishi Double Gargoyle shaft in stiff, it was long for my standards, i swing it at 98mph, and hit it 250yrds total... Today I went into our local golf store Drummonds and tried the new Ping G400 Max 9* with a Kurokage TiNi 65grm S Shaft, it was not as long however I can say that i have a Smash F of 1.49 and, the speed was same however ball speed incresead by 4mph and my bad miss to the right is now gone! More solid that the Callaway too
WOW, what an awesome vid Gents. So informative, but never patronising and the ideal partnership an expert fitter and a clued up tester. PS Matt`s Fairway finder is now 340yards and bullet straight! Damn, if he wasn't such a nice guy you could really grow to hate him lol
I'm very similar to Matt in swing speed and AoA, so finding fairways is more important than a long drive contest. I play a G400 9* (13-14 launch, 23-2400 spin) and its seriously the best combo of length and dispersion. Confidence in knowing you're likely to hit it straight let's you swing more freely. It's the best "club" to have in your bag!
First of the production values are stupendous! You guys have clearly put some effort and attention into this channel it's greatly appreciated. As for the accuracy v long it would appear self evident that when Matt buttoned it in the middle with a comparative loft strangely enough the results were identical (not mentioning the out takes). Given that he's AOA is 5* with a 120mph swing speed it wouldn't make sense for the loft angle to be anything above 9. Moral of the story, hit the ball in the middle of the club
The forgiveness on both off-center hits and open face-angle hits using the G400 max was quite amazing. Really comes down to the goal we had in this video of fitting a driver that finds more fairways - the fact that the G400 max could keep up with the sub zero on a few hits was a definite bonus though!
Great video. Nice seeing a fellow lefty hitting the shots. I recently went to a demo day and found very similar results and was saying a lot of the same things Matt was. Only I was hitting the G400 lst version. Tried Mizuno Titleist Callaway TaylorMade and even PXG and nothing was as forgiving as the Ping.
Damn you Matt and your awesome swing! Seriously, great video. And thanks for not reversing the video and making him look like a right handed golfer. My step son is a lefty and it's great to have other lefties to model himself after. Thanks guys!
Awesome video as usual!! One comment that was said that I never knew. Never knew that a low spin driver puts such a premium on face angle. So someone who had trouble with hooks or slices would pay a price using a a low spin driver. So say an M3, even with the Twist Face, the low spin may actually cancel out the Twist Face if the face angle is off by too much (if I'm understanding this correctly)
G400 max performs well for Matt. Playing Cobra King LTD right now. Can't wait to get numbers from Shawn at Wisdom in Golf on his GCQuad then compare at TXG vs G400 etc. Thanks again for an excellent video. Time well spent ( and yes I never watch tv golf instruction or have bought a golf magazine in the past 3 years!!). Cheers. JM.
I tried the G400 max for the first time the other day and I was amazed how straight some of my drives were. I will definitely look at ping, and mizuno, the next time around.
Awesome 👏. Would like to see the G400 LST matched up against the G400 max. My swing speed is 104-108 mph not even close to his and I went for the LST in the Ping Tour 65S at 44.5 inches (0.75 inches short).
Good informative video. I am in the market for some new clubs soon. I hit the ball quite a long way but I do have trouble finding the fairway consistently, now I will have some more information when I go, as it will be the first time I have been fitted for clubs.
Thanks to watching your videos I started to swing alot.more like you are and down the range tonight I found myself being more consistent with straighter shots. 😁😁 Even had a few compliments about how much further I was hitting
My Numbers are identical to Matt’s, haha! I have a bit more ball speed and a little more spin since I play a fade. I’m also a lefty. No fitters have the rouge sub zero for left handed players here. Wish I could have this kind of knowledge and variation of shafts/club heads in Sweden. Very nice video, might order one blind 😂
Another great video, shame you are not in the uk, I am off to see Jason at Golf Principles next week as you recommended, looking forward to a similar quality fitting.
Nice video. From what I am seeing that G400max is a great club. Kind of makes the rest of the G400 range surplus to requirements. Unless you are really after a slightly smaller version
I'm looking for a new driver and I'm leaning towards a rogue but not the sub zero. I really wish you were in the States, CONNECTICUT to be exact ha ha ha. I'm 65 y.o. This month I would love to see you fit a epic star. I understand it's for older players. Great video.
It was interesting to see swing speed drop by about 4mph when you made the switch from the first to second club, but then ball speed jumped right back up when you changed to the 9* head in the Ping. Out of the 2, I would play the Ping as I would prefer to be in the fairway as well!
This is brilliant. I've always played a TT Dynamic Gold S300 shaft in my driver. I love the heaver feel. I would love to see the difference in accuracy and length with a steel shaft. Cheers!
How do the pros get smash factors right at 1.50? On the swing at 23:30, Matt hits it dead center of the club face yet only achieves a smash factor of 1.44. Do the pros hit 1.50 because of swing mechanics? Using tweaked drivers for maximum face hotness? Does using a lower loft driver (e.g. 8.5 deg) also help increase smash?
If these videos have taught me anything, its that I need someone to tell me what driver I need, not the other way around lol. Not to mention how beneficial a fitting is over an off the rack driver. Good thing I live in Kitchener.
I would get fitted for the driver that gives the longest average drive, meaning if the spin drops off the planet (below 1500) on a slight mishit than that would pull the average down. The reason being, with a similar ball speed as the two of you, the goal of the driver should be to maximize distance with only that one club since the 3 wood goes plenty far enough and provides the control needed. It always depends on strategy and course management but its nice to use the 3 wood off maybe half of the tees and then the distance with the driver is there when you need it.
Great video again. I'd game the ping bc I prefer being consistent than super long. I know I'm in the minority but I still play a Nike driver bc it was as forgiving but my misses were better than any club I had tested.
Would love to see the same test with the Standard Rogue and doing the same type of club adjustment you did with the Ping. I'm sure he will be straight and long with the Rogue also.
There are several guys that carry a second driver for par 5's. I am thinking of doing the same. I carry a 10.5 deg Callaway X2, stiff shaft , 45.5' and play it at 1 deg closed, swing speed 98. What would be the general idea for a longer driver? Stiffer Shaft?, lower loft?, counter weight?
Good question! The reason is that on the GC Quad launch monitor we use, it measures clubhead speed differently than Trackman. Clubhead speed readings on GC Quad are always higher because it's measuring the face instead of the back of the club as Trackman does. So taking the last shot in this video as an example: that swing on Trackman would be around a 115mph clubhead speed reading - which would be about a 1.49 smash factor with the ball speed measured. GC Quad's 'efficiency' rating is the equivalent to Trackman's smash factor, and generally 1.45 is what you'll see as a 'perfect' hit on GC Quad with the driver.
Does the difference in clubhead speed between GC Quad and Trackman vary as much with irons as well? Or because irons are more compact, front to back, they have more similar readings?
My question is, if you’re playing on a windy day does that remove the benefit of the higher spinning club, as it’ll make it more susceptible to curving offline with the extra height?
I love my Cobra King LTD, because the sound and feel I get, I assume that we can make every driver sound that way by using hot melt but won't that effect everything else?
I know they say the Hzrdus T1100 is 1.5 x stiffer in tip than Hzrdus Black. So would a Black 65 6.0 be about the same stiffness as T1100 5.5 flex ? roughly. I hit both and despite T1100 being stiffer I still think maybe bc of the materials it felt less harsh than the black...... Perhaps the T1100 premium material has a little better feel in general
Brilliant video. The hype around low spin and distance aimed at average golfers needs to be a bit more balanced. Tour players with a wedge in hand will hit the green from almost anywhere but a 10 handicap golfer will be 50 yards back, in the rough with a 7 iron. Find fairways more often will benefit average Joe.
Love the videos! Have a question though. In a number of your videos Ian has pointed out that backspin actually stabilizes ball flight and low spinning drives have a tendency to hook or slice more than higher spinning shots. Can Ian elaborate more on this in future videos. I have heard contradictory information in a fitting done at TPI on a Golf WRX person. So it would be great to get clarification. Thanks.
Love the video! Off topic but what about putter fittings and shafts? Accra vs steel. Steel vs steel or does it even matter? Ive never tested shafts only heads and I have no idea what shaft I’d even have in my putter.
Would of been good to see rogue set up with more loft and heavier weight at the back to make it more forgiving, Im going to try both these drivers out and cobra f8
Do you see much of a difference in the head shape when over the ball? Currently gaming a G400 LST - really happy with distances I'm hitting but always looking to tighten the dispersion so considering getting a Max as well
Just got fit for the G400 MAX. hit some G400 at the same time. Back to back you notice it just a little but like other reviews comparing G400 to G400 max you quickly adapt and it is is not a huge difference. The G400 MAX is noticeably more forgiving. Does not mask a push or pull but my mishit of a hard slice is gone. Got fitted for the Tour 75g shaft. Love it!
I play a 2007 TaylorMade Burner 9.5° driver with a Project X LZ handcrafted 64g 6.0 shaft. Had a Trackman session and my numbers were: swing speed 108mph, ball speed 154.4mph, smash 1.42, launch angle 11.8°, spin 1995, height 72 feet, carry 241 yards, total 271 yards. Wondering if these numbers were optimal or if a new head (which one?) might improve carry? Thanks for any advice!
You could probably get more ball speed out of a 2018 (or even 2017) model driver, particularly on mishits. Something like a Callaway Rogue or Taylormade M4 would be good to try in a fitting, look to raise your launch angle slightly as well to improve carry.
Great video! But why did you not start out with the 9 gmax rather than the 10.5 considering the rogue was open to 8? 10.5 was always going to launch and spin to much. 340 which was the longest drive of the session and was achieved by both drivers because you got the heads closer in loft. For me I’d say there would be very little in the difference distance wise but the ping would certainly be more stable.
Wanted to show the extremes of making a driver as accurate (lowest dispersion) as possible so we started with a high loft. The 9º did end up being a great balance of both distance and accuracy.
I tried 10.5 head adjusted it down to 9.5 In x flex kura cage shaft not sure on spelling was still bit high but flew good want to try 9 degree head out and maybe adjust it to 8 degree
Just took delivery of G max tour 66x on your advice slightly higher loft .Set it at 9.9 teed it up and got straight shots (slight draw ) 300 yrds carry jackpot 👍not bad for a 54 yr old 🤗
Funny thing...the comment about the squished face giving more confidence -- as a person who can tend to hit the crown the tall face gives me (and others) confidence.
Question: Do you ever fit guys for 2 drivers. 1 of each. I am asking because I play 2 different drivers. 1: 44,5” Epic Flash SZ. 8-9*. Mamba Copper CB. 15 gram weight in front. Back weight removed. Loooong. 2: 43,5”. Same head. 10-11*. Mamba green. Back weight in. Super straight. Not as long. Use different setup according to course :)
What launch angle should I target? 10.5 degrees driver maybe? Also is which one from the Rogue or M4 might be fade biased (im fighting hooks as big mishits) or should I then look into M3 or other model/brand? Thanks again!
Look at Ping G400 LST and Callaway Rogue Sub Zero for fade bias, launch angle of around 13º would be good for you, 10.5º loft is likely what you'll need.
Hey guys great video it was very informative on the difference between what you're looking for in both distance and accuracy! I know this questions a bit off topic but if I got fit for a certain shaft in a driver would the 3 wood version of that shaft be good for me in a 3 wood? Example a project x evenflow in the rogue driver and 3 wood.
Depends on many factors, it is possible that it would be a good fit for you but we would have to see the launch conditions you produce with both the driver and 3 wood to make that call.
Could you obtain similar results to the Ping with the regular Rogue? Or the Sub Zero with the heavy weight in the back, or even by playing around with different weight configurations? I.e not a heavy and a light weight, but more similar weights. Aftermarket if not provided by Callaway.
I recently got fitted and had a question for you guys. I have the Callaway Rogue in 10.5 Aldila Synergy shaft with some Lead tape added to bring it to d3 swing weight. I have a 95-100mph swing speed and my ball flight is currently straight or with a very slight fade. My question is, I recently did a launch monitor (aboutgolf) session at pga superstore and found my spin numbers to be quite odd. My ball flight was typical of how I normally hit on the course, but the monitor read my spin at 3500-3800 on well struck hits and carried straight 240-245 then literally rolled out less than 4 yards. I had the settings set to dry with no wind and also tried it with normal settings. I’m happy with the carry, and it translates to the course, but it’s hard to verify the lack of roll out on the course. Do you think this is likely just error or real?
Hard to say without seeing your ball flight Jason, but in an indoor situation nothing beats the GC Quad for accuracy. Do you find you get much roll on the golf course?
I didn’t get my ball flight height number but I definitely wasn’t ballooning it. The course I play on tends to be fairly hilly, so it’s hard to compare it. I will say I’ve never noticed that little of roll out on the course. I’ll have to pay more attention to it when I play a flatter course. Wish I had taken a picture of all the data! Anyways, Thanks for the reply and I’m definitely a fan!
Great video showing more distance isn't always better.... How about ping 400 max against regular rouge..... Both fitted for a blend of distance and forgiveness...
Which driver would you go with - Rogue Sub Zero or G400 Max? Let us know in the comments!
TXG Tour Experience Golf I have the g400 max 9.0 and love it, but I think I need a shaft upgrade.
For me it has to be the Ping G400 Max.
Rogue SubZero for me! If I need to hit fairways I hit my 2 iron!
TXG Tour Experience Golf it'd be G400 Max as I certainly do not want a club that has a bias to be open at address like the Sub Zero is. I'm only 13hcp so that's just be Hcp suicide. New Favorite channel. Guys y’all are doing a great job. Big fan of the work and information you’re providing.
My productivity at work has absolutely dive bombed since I found this channel, haha. Fascinating as always.

Wow, can’t believe how much your swing has changed! Awesome! Wondering if you have a video that breaks down the changes and how the new one is better.
Great video guys. Helps me understand what I've been missing all these years.
Looking at both of these drivers. Although I am not looking at the sub zero. Thanks for the vid.
WOW!!! Big differences. Very informative. Thanks again
The other golf channels are going to lose all their viewers to you! Great video as always!
Great video guys. Keep them coming!
I want that last driver he hit the 9.5 ping . Perfect balance. Good work
WOW, that was an amazing finish.
Hi guys, just found your channel & loving the content
Awesome video guys...great commentary!
Great content on this channel!
1.45 smash (or efficiency) is pretty much optimal on GC Quad software, 1.50 readings would be measured on Trackman.
If these videos have taught me anything, its that I need someone to tell me what driver I need, not the other way around lol. Not to mention how beneficial a fitting is over an off the rack driver. Good thing I live in Kitchener.
Loving the content! Can you do a video shoeing the difference between a good shaft fit,one too stiff and one too soft?
Good idea!
Best video about drivers yet
Fantastic shoulder turn, really rips that ball.
Excellent presentation !
Best fitting video I’ve seen on RUclips and I’ve seen shit loads, keep them coming lads 👍🏌️♂️
👍👍
Great video guys. Thanks for all the info!
Found this video very helpful. Almost all testers focus on distance and fail to mention accuracy.
Another very informative video - GREAT content !!!
I’ve heard you mention this a few times, but can you explain the physics behind why more backspin helps control curve?
Great video again. I'd game the ping bc I prefer being consistent than super long. I know I'm in the minority but I still play a Nike driver bc it was as forgiving but my misses were better than any club I had tested.
Great video guys 👍🏻
Such an interesting video you guys clearly know your stuff
Would love to see the same test with the Standard Rogue and doing the same type of club adjustment you did with the Ping. I'm sure he will be straight and long with the Rogue also.
There are several guys that carry a second driver for par 5's. I am thinking of doing the same. I carry a 10.5 deg Callaway X2, stiff shaft , 45.5' and play it at 1 deg closed, swing speed 98. What would be the general idea for a longer driver? Stiffer Shaft?, lower loft?, counter weight?
Really good - informative content, keep it up
What accounts for the low smash factor in a centered hit with a +5 AoA? Surprised we wouldn't see ball speeds closer to 180 with 120+ swing speed.
Will have to get Ian to chime in on that one!
Matt has a great swing!
We'll add that to the video to-do list!
so when are you guys doing an international fitting roadshow?? Starting in Australia??
Would of been good to see rogue set up with more loft and heavier weight at the back to make it more forgiving, Im going to try both these drivers out and cobra f8
I’ve got both .Got an LS just ordered GMax 10.5 67 x .Ls for low hazard course GMax for high hazard course .G Max amazing dispersion 10 yrds shorter
Just took delivery of G max tour 66x on your advice slightly higher loft .Set it at 9.9 teed it up and got straight shots (slight draw ) 300 yrds carry jackpot 👍not bad for a 54 yr old 🤗
24:38 TELEPORTATION!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Another good informative vid.
Funny thing...the comment about the squished face giving more confidence -- as a person who can tend to hit the crown the tall face gives me (and others) confidence.
I would select the Ping G400 Max with 9 degree loft. Finding the fairway is more important and the extra distance is good too.
I’m at loss as to why you changed the club head away from Rogue sub zero. I don’t his as far but I do hit it straighter than that.
Thanks for answering, keep up the great work guys!
Could you obtain similar results to the Ping with the regular Rogue? Or the Sub Zero with the heavy weight in the back, or even by playing around with different weight configurations? I.e not a heavy and a light weight, but more similar weights. Aftermarket if not provided by Callaway.
Possibly, the G400 max has the higher MOI rating though so it would likely still be more forgiving.
Noted! The Ping certainly jumped up to the head of the queue to try!
I'd also love to see this comp. These two are what I'm down to....
G400 Max. Wow. I wish I can get fit from you guys. I mean it.
