Hi Lads, another great insight into getting properly kitted out. For me what's come across in this and recent videos, is it isn't "one brand fits all" with a tweak here and there, as many golf shops sell. It's tailoring the head/shaft to the individual, taking account of their numbers/patterns , so they get the best out of their game. Of course having it explained with a West of Scotland accent does help me to understand it better.😉
Just listening and watching your fitting process makes my game better. Can only imagine how good it would be if I could make the flight out and actually have my clubs tuned by you folks.
Gotta be the best golf videos on RUclips Would love to get custom fit with you guys, such a low stress environment with the knowledge to back it all up Keep the videos coming!
Your series is phenomenal. Keep up the great videos, they're extremely informative and really help people understand the importance of the club fitting process!
Great job with the videos. The level of knowledge with product, swing and the actual players needs, far surpasses the basic numbers most fitters cling to. I feel like a fit also needs to translate to gaming situations. I like that you factor that in. Good job.
I'm convinced! I have similar swing numbers/ball flight as Mike. I'm hoping to see the same results from an upcoming fit next week. Thank you for the excellent work!
It's truly amazing what you can do with a proper fitting! As soon as my new hip is stable and my swing speed is back up I'm getting a full and paid fitting done. I can only hope to find a fitter here in The Netherlands that is half as good as you are.
Yet more great TXG content 👍 Proof that it's better to fix the club than the swing if you've got a decent repeating one!! This is the way the. best players in the World operate,it's what the Tour Trucks do. Make the clubs fit the swing for the course conditions that week.
I'm working on this as we speak. My swing has progressively become too much of a draw and my lie angle creeping up, shaft lean too far forward (dynamic loft too low), so my height is less and my spin is less/rolls out too much. Worked with an instructor/fitter to work on a straighter/higher ball flight and ideally, I'd like to have a slight fade for my iron shots to increase spin and height, and have less roll out. With my iron fit I now have less offset as I've moved to a mixed set of blades/split cavity. Lie angle flat 1°, higher trajectory shaft, slightly less heavy, and have changed my setup to have less knee bend and am more upright to lessen my in to out path, less shaft lean and now have straightened, heightened, and have achieved more spin to hold greens. I'm excited to keep progressing with this setup as my irons have held my handicap back, since I've had much less opportunities to score. I hope this helps you further. Since I don't know what your swing looks like, look up proper setup, test things out, get fitted (ask questions and tell them what you want. Most fitters aren't as great as Ian and TXG), and apply what you feel give you the best ball flight!
Hi Ian. Another great video. Your knowledge is from another level than the fitters I find in golfstores or see on RUclips . This is how a clubfitting should be....fitting 2.0 😇👌🏽👍🏽
Tremendous video. Thanks Mike, nice to see different swings and swing speeds. I also am a sweeper/picker and play Apex irons and miss to the left. Great information, keep the videos coming.
Very interesting point you mentioned in passing that brought home to me what has been wrong with the fitters I have tried and used, namely they understand loft, spin and launch data but not really looking at dynamic aspects of the swing and then making changes to suit that rather than just reaching a launch level or spin number. Hence not really tweaking clubs or suggesting enough changes (or even trying them out rather than rushing to to conclusion) of heads or shafts.
Just like every sport, there's always something the better players have done to make their game better than the average Joe. Being able to take any player and build a club that fits his/her swing is just incredible. Would love to be able to work with this crew.
I had the same swing as Mike. I used to take the club inside and set it very flat in the takeaway, which forced me on an in to out path with a flat or upward angle of attack because the low point in my swing was too far back and the entire plane was very shallow. The only clubs I could hit straight w that swing were 3 flat and .5 short. I’m still working on moving the plane more upright, it’s a tough pattern to change!
Always great videos . I'd like to see a 20 or 30 handicapper fitting for irons I know that's asking alot but I'd like to see how much it changes his striking.
I wonder how much Mike would accomplish with a slightly weaker right hand grip. I guess that’s always the dilemma. He’s young and talented, maybe club fitting solves a lot of the problem without messing with his other fundamentals. Excellent content. Many thanks.
Love it ! Again! I’m new to the channel and I’m amazed with what I see. I wish I could have such great professional as you are around my place...(Belgium)
Blimey I so wish I had the money for a no quibble fit. Golf is the hardest game on the planet let alone using equipment not suited to yourself, Ian makes club fitting look so easy. I've never had that feeling at any of my club fittings. It's a shame, but Ian seems so in depth and thorough. Maybe one day eh ?? :-)
Brilliant video guys. I'm about to go for a re-fit in a few weeks, looking for that bit more control with accuracy and also spin as my clubs are strong loft, low spinning. These new clubs do spin more but keep the distance I pretty much have won the current set. To see you're explanation I think is Great for all amateur golfers regardless of HCP. It's interesting how he shaft has so much influence.
Hi guys, thank you for your videos. If I where there, nearby Toronto, I'll have had a fitting with you from driver to wedge! Unfortunately I'm in Italy..too far. I'd love see a video on fitting for proper club length since I think that tables (height, wtf) are no more very a good starting point nowadays due to technology improvements which permit using longer clubs... what do you think about it?
Mike's swing is the most similar to mine I've found on this channel. Struggle with lefts, 82-85mph 6i, low spin, 5 handicap haha. I float between 8 and 4. Currently at 5.4 so this is very interesting to me.
I love these videos! The tracking and analysis is easy and logical to understand. One thing about Mike's swing ... his right hand looks like it's overly strong. I'd love to hit draws like he does, but I gave up on hitting draws about 35 years ago. I digress:I'm wondering how much "tweaking" of the club specs can make up for one's grip and swing path?
Man I need to be fitted by you. I have been in and out of iron fittings but my local course lacks the shaft options that you have and I would love to have the options and experienced fitter to help get into a good set of irons and shafts
What was the flex (x or s) of Modus 105 used. Does 1/2” make the shaft play Stifter or Softer assuming swing weight remains the same ? Would 3* flat lie angle still be used even with the 1/2” longer setup ?
I fight a very similar left miss as Mike and play my irons 1/2 inch long (i am 6'3 but have long arms) i currently play p790. I am also a picker and have similar inside out tendency with my club path. I found it interesting that you neutalized his ball flight by going shorter with the club length thoughts on me trying this?? Also you went flatter with the lie angle correct? From my understanding P790 plays a bit upright in the standard setting is this correct? Just trying to get good idea as i go into a fitting this winter for new irons. Thanks love the channel!
Can you do a video about wedge shafts and fitting? It seems like there is very little out there about what are some of the most important scoring clubs in the Bag. Please help!
What I’d give for a fitting at txg. Shame I live in France! BUT, the wife is Canadian so I’m trying to come up with a cunning excuse to make a trip back sometime and drop in. Any ideas? Great videos - so much quality advice!
Was at a fitting today and we couldn't get the spin or launch up at all - didn't matter what the shaft or clubhead were. I'm a stack and tilter with a pretty flat backswing and compression/deloft at impact (which I like for short irons). I never even thought about length of club to fix launch/spin on 7, 6, 5 irons.
Might have been one of the beast video's for amateurs to watch, by far excellent information and it wasn't at 120MPH"Matt". But love the differences in all videos from high swing players to low. Can't say enough GO GET FIT.
I have almost identical issue as Mike and the same exact swing and struggle with left misses. What was his final set up for him when you were down with the fitting. I had thought about going standard and flat even though im 6'2" but seem to control standard length better. Thanks for all the content, easily the best and most informative videos on you tube.
Mike has my flaw. A consistent draw and hook. I’ve been working on swinging more in an arc relatively in to in with my golf coach, Roger Gunn. Although, I have to have a slight feeling of swinging out to in in order to have my swing path read 0.0 degree of club path on trackman. I literally had a perfect reading on the club path when I felt like I swung it out to in just only a little heir.
Really interesting listening to someone who really knows the intricacies of the golf swing. Great video. From someone that doesn't I was wondering although its difficult to see due to the angle so i might be barking up the wrong tree; if Mike moved his ball position back a little (as it looks a bit forward) would that not change the angle of attack (more down) and then increase the spin/spin loft of the shot along with resulting in a slightly more open face at impact decreasing the left shot? Really enjoying the videos. Cheers.
Definitely some things Mike could work on with his swing to influence the ball flight - however for the purposes of the video we wanted to show what a good fitting is capable of!
Loved this! My body build and swing are very similar to Mikes, so I really appreciated this. Question, what has mike done to build up his swing speed? I feel no matter what I do I can’t gain speed/yardage, it can get frustrating!
TXG Tour Experience Golf Thanks for the reply, I didn’t know with the more modern graphite and seeing Kuchar and I believe Snedeker playing steelfibers if they were growing in popularity at all.
TXG Tour Experience Golf It just got me thinking, obviously a larger percentage on the LPGA as well - I play project x 6.0 but I’ve suffered a few injuries and practice on matts so didn’t know if there were options that would be a little easier on my body! Graphite an option but any steel shafts that would fit the bill? Appreciate you replies!
Not sure if something like the TT sensi-core exists anymore, they were inserts that dampened vibration. Will see if we can get Ian to chime in on this one.
Question, how would I go about finding some lessons? what should I look for/ask about? How many lessons should I have before I get fit? Can I get fit for clubs I already have or used clubs? how much should I expect to pay for lessons and/or fitting?
Was really hoping to get more shaft specs on each change. I know you went with a shorter shaft but no mention of flex and weight change. Wouldn't that have more effect on path and face control opposed to it being a little shorter?
Did Mike get a chance to warm up before the fitting? Or does he just dive into full swings with a mid-iron? I know that would make a HUGE different for me in a fitting-- having time to properly warm up.
great video again. noticed he's pretty strong grip. i know i have that issue and either weakened the grip and or start with the club face more open at address. As a fitter, would that be something you would recommend?
Awesome video once again Ian! It was great to see and learn how a premium fitting can optimize one's iron game without requiring a swing change. Particularly, finding the right head type + shaft combination is better than being "married" to a brand. A question...I am a "picker" as well, currently playing G30 irons and considering to get G400 irons, with True Temper XP95 R300 shafts. Is there a better club head that I should consider for my swing type? Thinner or bigger sole?
Looking to get a more consistent, higher ball flight. I typically get a mid height shot shape. My miss tendency is a thinned shot, so I have a lot of shots that tend to run a bit when they land on the green. Playing in Panama, we have firm conditions for January to April, then the rest of the year is rainy season, so the courses get progressively more soft as we get closer to November/December. I need a versatile club set that allows me to play well in both conditions.
Loved this video! So were these irons picked for him because he is a picker and these model irons help introduce a little more launch and spin? I am the same way with my swing and looking for more launch or spin to help stop the ball on the green. Looking to get fit soon locally and would love a good starting point of irons to choose from and from there decide what is best. Thank you!
Before you adjusted the lie angle it was showing his dynamic lie as 6* toe down. How does that affect the reading on face angle. Because 6 toe down with a 3* in to out path with 1.5* closed to path should be a on target slight draw. But with 6* toe down that should be pushed way out right? No?
More Mike!! I have same swing, miss, and issues. What was the final shaft you got him in? Curious about his driver too, if he delofts that too. Awesome vid!
Much flatter lie angle and a bit shorter shaft length - the shorter shaft brought the swing more upright, and the flatter lie angle started the ball more right.
Thanks for the feedback. I've never seen or considered using the lie to correct shot shape. Can you tell me how much toe down they were? Edit: I just rewatched the video and saw they were 3 deg toe down. Would addressing the ball with the face a little more open not accomplish the same shot shape correction? Is there an advantage to adjusting the head vs changing the address position?
The player could address their swing faults, absolutely. But there are a lot of golfers out there without enough time (or interest) to practice and correct their swing. That's where we can step in and offer them some pretty significant improvements to their ball flight just using club fitting.
I play the JPX900 Forged and struggle with a hook miss. Does the JPX have more offset compared to the AP2 and Srixon? Or what would be the cause to this? Could I bend my irons flat a couple degrees to help with this? I feel like I have a similar ball flight to Mike and I'm currently a 6 handicap.
Great video. Was there anything in the shaft profile going from the PXi to the Modus 105 that you thought would help his left miss? Stiffer in the tip or a stronger mid section in the Modus? Thanks
Yes Matthew I like the Modus for Mike as it has a lower balance point and plays a little stiffer. The shaft in the video was a Modus 105, I actually suggested Mike play a Modus 120 stiff, soft stepped once.
Great content guys. Addicted to your channel. 👍 I have similar swing speed and timing as Mike along with being a bit of a picker with a neutral to in-out path and a left miss. So this video really caught my eye. I’m 49 with a bit of golfers elbow and have been away from the game for the better part of 10 yrs and I can’t handle the X100s in my old Titleist 990 irons anymore. I was “fit” for those when I was 30 and had a 92-94 mph iron swing speed. I just picked up a nearly new set of P770 irons with Modus 120 S and love the feel of this shaft. Was curious what you saw in Mike’s swing and numbers that made the Modus 120 a better fit for him than the Modus 105 because both shafts were on my short list.
Great stuff. Love the way there is discussion and interpretation of all aspects - from the club head strike, to the ball flight which, from all appearances is great with the GCquad. 10 or so years ago I purchased clubs from a company that exclusively sells through club fitters. The quality of the product is certainly there, as is the knowledge of the fitter. What was lacking was the discussion of what was “going on” with the fitting, or the ability to obtain a print out of the specs measured. I guess the fitter thought the info was proprietary to him. That fitting was measured with Trackman, and from some research, it looks like GCquad is superb for indoor fittings. My question: From your perspective, after using Trackman previously, and now using the Foresight equipment, will there potentially be enough difference in the measured ball flight, that make it possible for an individual to be fitted with clubs that may be quite a bit different different?
Doubt you'd get a bad fitting with Trackman. GC Quad has its advantages indoors, and certainly is in another class when it comes to strike point though.
All shots with new clubs show toe down by quite a bit (though it doesn't seem to shape the ball to the right). Any particular reason not to get the lie angle fit first? Thanks.
The lie angle was actually the biggest adjustment so that toe down was done purposefully! An advanced fitter can use lie angle to influence ball flight, the actual interaction with the turf occurs after the strike so a perfectly zero dynamic lie is not the main goal. Good question!
You are the experts and so probably correct. His strike was pretty consistent but I wonder if it would be a problem on a bad day when he caught a few somewhat fat.
Great videos pretty interesting stuff, always thought it was ideal to have the spin rates at the number on the club x 1000. Does more spin not allow for easier workablity left and right ? I know guys with modest club speed probably looking to max out distance but surely must be sacrificing stopping control in firmer conditions and shot shaping ability with such low spin ? I swing a 6 iron at 92/3 and am only carrying it around 184 but with spin between 5800 and 6200, also play x100 AMT as I like to see the low launch higher spin flight and also love the feel of the DG. Ive never been properly fit before but do plan to on my next set of irons, have always just went with feel. Also I can tell your from Scotland so hello from Glasgow. Cheers
Generally speaking less backspin would allow the ball to curve more sideways, backspin adds stability. Stopping power can be an issue for sure with too low spin, although with enough height the angle of descent can help provide stopping power.
I’m a high handicapper with really poor fitting clubs now. I was just fit for clubs. I’m 6’4” and the only shafts available to test were .5” over. The fitter recommended 1” over. Same thing with the grip. He recommended jumbo grips but didn’t have any to test. Should I be concerned about that?
Just got fit into the modus 105 Stiff -1/2 inch in jpx 919 hot metal pros. 87 mph 7i and a slightly steep and quick tempo with heavy loading. What do you think about that for someone with these numbers? Top 5 strikes averaged 6900 spin with a Kirkland 3 piece ball.
Not sure if you're still responding to comments, but I'd be really interested to know what impact the shaft change would have had on the original Mizunos. Great Vid too - I'm hooked
The Mizunos just weren't producing enough spin for Mike, and likely a shaft change wouldn't have enough of an effect on that to make the ball flight optimal.
TXG Tour Experience Golf interesting. I’m getting a fitting on Friday in Melbourne and have my heart set on Mizuno but the golf nerd in me knows to be open minded..... and I already have a low ball flight !! Great content.
I know that the object of this video is to focus only on equipment specs with the existing swing/set-up but isn't Mike's lefts accentuated by his strong grip?
As a summary, did you only fit him to a new shaft and iron head to lessen his draw and increase his height and decent angle? I'm not lessening the work and his results by saying "only fit him..." Awesome, awesome stuff!
Can loft effect smash factor? My thoughts are that if you deliver more dynamic loft your smash factor will lower...if so does this factor in when you see lower smash factors with more traditionally lofted clubs/players clubs?
TXG Tour Experience Golf Thanks for replying....I was always curious when I see someone stating they are striking a less bladed iron better using smash factor as proof. When it could possibly be the more mid handicapper iron is 2-4 degrees stronger effecting results.
Hey Ian. Does the M1 sit a little bit open? (And if so, can that be adjusted?) When I went to buy a new driver I was hitting the the m1 to the right a lot and I normally play a draw, but couldn't achieve it with that club, so I ended up going with the ping g400 max.
This channel without doubt is one of the very best golf channels on RUclips. OUTSTANDING !!!
I learn more and more with each video . I have watched hundreds of videos and never learned this much so fast , TXG is the ticket
Got fit with Ian back in his Modern Golf days and he is truly a rock star. Highly recommenced getting dialed in with his professional experience.

Even an accomplished fitter needs fitting...MM is a golf course superintendent's dream player with thise AoA numbers...nice swinging Mister !!
Great insight, i guess it goes to show, there are club fitters and there are CLUB FITTERS!! Awesome vid.

I'll say it again. this channel is unbelievable. Great work.
Great fitting and video. I think your style as a fitter is spot on. I may have to travel from Spokane to see you.

Wish I can find a fitter as great and professional as u are
Great job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love the insights! My fitting is booked for March 21st. Looking forward to it.
The best golf channel in RUclips hands down! Great stuff
I guess all my "how would you raise my iron spin" questions last week were heard! Great Video!

Look up Precision Golf - based in Surrey I've been fitted there and service incredibly similar to what these guys do
Best golf video ever. This is an almost exact description of me, right down to the longer shafts to add distance.
Hi Ian. Another great video. Your knowledge is from another level than the fitters I find in golfstores or see on RUclips . This is how a clubfitting should be....fitting 2.0 😇👌🏽👍🏽

Great job!
Love the diagnostic approach, wish I was in Canada!
Very nice video once again. Would love to see someone with like a 18+ hcp get fit. Someone who doesn't always make good contact.
Great stuff, Love what Ian does!
Never mind. You answered my question below. Thanks. Love the channel!
this channel has earned the sub with bell, wish they had this type of place state side ..
I really enjoy this content! Great video. 👍
great informative video! i have had a similar hook draw with my psi irons and switch to 565 irons and love them!
Good variety TXG Thumbs up!

TXG Tour Experience Golf yeah I am constantly amazed how you can alter ball flight and direction with your fitting expertise
Thanks so much, insights galore.
Loved this! My body build and swing are very similar to Mikes, so I really appreciated this. Question, what has mike done to build up his swing speed? I feel no matter what I do I can’t gain speed/yardage, it can get frustrating!
TOUR!
At the top you lose both right side bend and ie the front side bend. Lose a lot of rotation and speed that way. Great video!!
Great videos, very natural on camera as well! Quick question do you fit many faster swingers in to graphite shafts in irons? Thanks
Not usually, graphite for irons is usually fit to help with characteristics of a slower swing speed.
TXG Tour Experience Golf Thanks for the reply, I didn’t know with the more modern graphite and seeing Kuchar and I believe Snedeker playing steelfibers if they were growing in popularity at all.
They seem to be in the minority, but good point there are a few out there!
Your channel is fantastic, kudos to you!
Why not change Matts grip slightly? He has both left and right hand really strong.
Why didn't you try the shorter shaft on the Mizuno?
Head - Shaft combination or another factor?
Thanks!
Hey Anthony! Depends what you're looking to improve with your ball flight, what other details can you give us?
Thank you!
Yes exactly Patrick, a more stable ball flight through more spin was helpful here - as well as the ability to bend the lie angle appropriately
@@clubchampionmedia Love that you guys take the time to reply to comments. Thank you!
Great video. LIKED
You'll see Mikey again for sure! Final shaft was the Nippon Modus
Great video. What aspects of the new equipment contributed to fixing the shot shape? I struggle with the same shot shape.
Thanks again for your time and input.
Can you please do a video on shaft puring? Is it really beneficial, worth the cost, etc.?
On the list!
Does less offset help with the left miss (RH Player). Or is that all in my head?
Not sure if you're still responding to comments, but I'd be really interested to know what impact the shaft change would have had on the original Mizunos. Great Vid too - I'm hooked
The Mizunos just weren't producing enough spin for Mike, and likely a shaft change wouldn't have enough of an effect on that to make the ball flight optimal.
TXG Tour Experience Golf interesting. I’m getting a fitting on Friday in Melbourne and have my heart set on Mizuno but the golf nerd in me knows to be open minded..... and I already have a low ball flight !! Great content.
great video! is it ok to be delivering the club toe down like he was if you usually miss with a pull draw?
Using the lie angle to control ball flight direction, so that should help a pull draw as well by getting the start line more to the right.
so it is ok to use lie angle to control ball flight? does that mess up face contact? meaning high or low strikes on the face?
Yes for sure, check out our other video on this: ruclips.net/video/aiDR6hHVrHQ/видео.html&lc=
Where is the best place to get a good fitting in Salt Lake City utah?
Were the Nippons in Stiff or Regular flex with Srixons?
I know that the object of this video is to focus only on equipment specs with the existing swing/set-up but isn't Mike's lefts accentuated by his strong grip?
As a summary, did you only fit him to a new shaft and iron head to lessen his draw and increase his height and decent angle? I'm not lessening the work and his results by saying "only fit him..." Awesome, awesome stuff!
For sure, those were the main goals of Mike's fitting.
Have you guys had a chance to test out Ben Hogan’s Fort Worth blades ? If so do you have them in stock ?
We don't carry those sorry Dylan.
Can loft effect smash factor? My thoughts are that if you deliver more dynamic loft your smash factor will lower...if so does this factor in when you see lower smash factors with more traditionally lofted clubs/players clubs?
Yes generally a higher lofted club is generating less ball speed vs. swing speed
(And if so, can that be adjusted?)
When I went to buy a new driver I was hitting the the m1 to the right a lot and I normally play a draw, but couldn't achieve it with that club, so I ended up going with the ping g400 max.
Should be fairly neutral, any time you adjust the loft higher in most heads you'll get a more closed face though.
Id work on that club delivery, 5 toe down is a lot
