Mad Catz made this stick reasonably easy to mod with out 'voiding' your warranty. There are 6 bolts on top, just like the standard TEs that you can remove to gain access to the stick & buttons (to swap them or make mods like the octo gate). I was just disassembling the thing to see how and why it was put together like it was (so many bolts!). So, all you need to do is unscrew the 6 bolts on top w/ a hex head and lift the top off and you can swap the gate with out even disconnecting any wires.
Thanks for the compliments! Square vs. octo vs. circular is all down to preference. If you mostly play a 360 character, you might prefer octo or circular. Slag Coin has an excellent article that might convince you that square is the way to go. They have a chart showing that circular and octo have smaller engagement zones for the corners and larger neutral position. Square gives you an even 11% across all zones. Search "Slag Coin Joystick Restrictor" and it'll be the first page in Google.
@jeanlouisfilipe Thanks. That is an excellent suggestion. When I shoot my videos of mods, I try to aim them at beginners/entry level and most of those people are averse to soldering so I was trying to show a more beginner friendly option.
@gearcade It took me over a week to record this, but that's because I had a hard time getting a big enough chunk of time; lots of stopping and starting. Shooting it on video and making sure you're making sense while doing things doesn't speed things up either. If you were to just do this for yourself, no video, I'd estimate it could be done in under an hour, maybe 30 min.
I am trying to install my ChImp into a Chun stick but this part where you have 'special male/female' wires and especially solderless trick with the yellow wire that seems to just get put in there somehow confuses me a bit. Can you offer me some advice? I must need to buy some extra wire and figure out how to make those wires you have? Or what I'm doing with that yellow wire trick?
It depends on what you have. An Akishop is a complete replacement. Best if you're starting with a PS3 stick. If you want to add PS3 compatibility to a Xbox 360 stick, use a ChImp or something similar (Phreak Mods Cerberus).
The male & female connectors just allow me to easily add in a 2nd wire. The button has 2 prongs that the female connectors go onto: 1 ground and 1 signal. The ground just has 1 wire coming off of it, but then the signal has the new wire (for the ChImp) and the old wire (for the 360 PCB). I have a written ChImp tutorial on my website donovanmyers[.]com that is for the TE & should be closer to your Chun stick. Google 'dual mod fight stick chimp' - it'll be the first result.
