- With the summer gaming showcases coming up, it's interesting to look back on the year thus far and the state of various titles after the dust has settled. Unfortunately, one such title - Rocksteady Studios' Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - is even worse off than before.
From a mixed critical response and falling short of Warner Bros. Discovery's expectations to a lackluster first season and $200 million impact on the company's revenue, things keep getting worse for the embattled live-service looter shooter. Perhaps worst of all, however, is that its player base has dwindled to embarrassing lows, barely hitting 400 peak concurrent players on Steam.
That's worse than its competitors, never mind titles like The Division, which is years older. As Season of the Joker's next episode approaches, one has to wonder if its parent company will pull the plug early and cut its losses.
"BuT GaMeRs WaNt LiVe SeRvIce". These air headed C-suite shot callers spend more money to make a failed game vs a single player one. No lessons learned here.
I think they're smart enough to know that it's not that people want live service, they just want to cash in on people's addiction to extra content and hope to nab that line and sinker.
The only popular live service games are mid games that are free to play on almost any platform including mobile. Gamers don't want that kind of game. Kids and teens play these games because it's free and they can play with their friends. Look at fortnite, nobody bought the game back when it first launched, they only played the free mode. Live service doesn't work for games you have to buy, how come gaming companies don't see that connection?

I'm OK with the multi-player style. I'm open to trying new things or style but the game plays, the story arch and the lack of creativity is what we that followed this company since the first Arkham series is just not used to.

There were so many red flags before release. Skeptics and media outlets like IGN tried to call them out but they were mocked and labeled as haters. Whoever bought SS deserves what they got. Hopefully, they learned a lesson.

What makes me all the more angry about this game is that THIS is how Batman who we loved to play as in the four Arkham series met his end. Atrocious.
I love it. Bats got what he deserved. The criminals were just symptoms of how evil Gotham City is, yet he ignores the real bad guys. Karma got to him.

I am the core core audience for this game. I played through the Arkham series like 5 times. City is my favourite game ever.
This game had to fail incredibly for me to not play but yet here we are.

But yeah I LOVE BATMAN and I love the Arkham games to my core.
But when I heard “live service” I honestly couldn’t care less if the game was being made by rocksteady.
Live services to me = bad and no care put into the game/ no love from the devs
Imagine how different things would have been if they just made another Arkham game or an actual justice league game.
I mean they could have just done a Guardians of the Galaxy clone and WB would broke even. I can't even blame WB, it's Discovery running them into the ground.
Executives, "journalists," reviewers and even developers no longer understand gamers and what they want. Instead, they look upon gamers with disdain.
The industry needs to be thoroughly scrubbed. Those in power have become corrupt, full of contempt and partiality, swayed by perverse promises of DEI dollars.

Worse is thought literally everyone had better ideas than rocksteady did, someone mentioned the idea of perhaps batman saving the justice league thus earning him membership .....could have even had suicide squad to as unwilling help and that would have been so much better
Not one live service game that requires a game to be bought has been successful. Remember save the world in fortnite? Nobody bought it, yet millions play fortnite free modes
In 2020 with the reveal I was interested slightly because I felt a Suicide Squad game would’ve been interesting. But when I saw Superman go bad and then heard it was in the Arkham-verse I just had no hope and prayed this game would never come out.
I was excited because I thought it could work with the Arkham-style gameplay and Rocksteady's reputation. However, when it was announced to be a live service game I knew that it would be terrible. It's even more sad as this is Kevin Conroy's final portrayal of Batman.
@iamskyfall it’s a travesty. I always wanted to be a game developer and was hoping to do a cool DC Batman game and work with Kevin Conroy someday. It’s such a shame and I’m sad this was his final game.
Credit where credit is due, Suicide Squad DID get gamers to recognize and reject wokeness in the industry and for that we should ge eternally grateful.

Heck SSKJL may not have been the sole reason woke ideology is being rejected in gaming. But it was one of the straws that broke the camels back. Especially when you look Sweet babies other products. Ragnarok. A serious down grade to God of War 4 in terms of story writing development. Spider-man 2 a glitchy messy game with a serious down grade to the ogs setting up a sequel to midquel that sold a quarter of the original game. That pissed off its player base.

Luke made a video showing how Rocksteady themselves wanted to make a live service, but it’s debatable how many devs actually wanted to vs Rocksteady management.

Ironically what killed the game for me is that there were no players. I spend 10 minutes trying to find a group to go around with and get one person in that time if I’m lucky. Would’ve kept playing if other people were active.

Why am I not surprised that this game was a failure. From the Bad writing to its bland graphics and gameplay, mandatory online connection, and tedious grinding for loot, this game went to Sushi very fast. Also, the Joker and Harley Quinn don't have any dialog with each other, yet they want people to spend 70 bucks on this game. I'm so glad I didn't buy this piss poor game cause it's a direct spit in the face to the Arkham games and very disrespectful to the late Kevin Conroy aka Batman.

It was horrible and cliche. Caught in the downward spiral of mediocrity. Gaming is dying from the shortsighted thought process of "more guns means better, right? ". We could've played this clone of a game in a number of other places. They shot themselves in the foot, and will have to limp to find a new identity.
Gaming is not dying , western Triple AAA companies are. Look at Elden ring and that dlc hype right now. That’s gaming .

At this point they should offer a free weekend on consoles. The reputation of this is such that I'm not willing to pay $20, let alone $60+, on a game that I might stop playing the same day I pick it up. Let me check it out over the weekend, put the base game with no dlc or season on sale for $19.99 and then hope to earn revenue through new players and dlc. I believe Battlefield 2042 did something similar (Free with game pass?) and it helped build a player base.
I just played the trial on ps5 and I really don’t understand why people hate the game that much. I really enjoyed it and really want to play it but not for €79,99. Games are getting to expensive, if the game would have been €59,99/€64,99 I would have bought on release.. now I will wait until there is a sale haha

Take a great single player game studio, force them to make a live service MTX garbage fest, and this is what you get. Doesn't take a genius to see that this was going to be dead on arrival.
A co-op Justice League game would have been the way to go, You could even solve the Superman problem by having him as a limited time power up, allowing players to have him swoop in as they take control for a small window. You could even have him as a fully unlocked character in new game +. Need to monetize? Sell outfits and extended player packs for additional Justice League members, having the core group as the only available player characters at launch. Just my thoughts.

Developers have no choice to dictate what project they want to create under a publisher otherwise they get no funding or are told they will be shut down unless they comply with whatever parent company dictates, only way to do so is if they are independent

A Suicide Squad game should've been a smaller scale heist, not an end of world and mess of a live service. I think a studio like Naughty Dog or Insomniac could've made a better game based on the squad.

When i saw they were making this game. I said to myself there is no way in hell the Justice League will ever lose to these ash*les. Never liked the Suicide Squad. They were the weakest of the DCEU. The Arkham Universe stoped at the Arkham Knight. It is also my Personal favorite of the 5 Batman games in that Universe! Would have loved to have seen a Superman game in the Arkhamverse!!

Making Harley "The Lead Character" was a huge mistake. Harley Quinn and the (insert junk title here though really Birds of Prey" was a giant success selling tickets. What? It bombed? Awww... It looks like junk.

The game is so dead that it were free on Prime Gaming this week, only 3 months after release.
When they showed the first trailer for this game back in August 2020 my heart sunk because it was obvious that this was a bad idea. I love their Batman games, but I knew even back then that I would never like this game.
They see what's happened to Marvel Avengers and they still try well ...

I think everyone except for the big brass saw this failure coming. It didn't look good when they revealed it first. They delayed it just to double down on everything we hated in the first gameplay reveal. So I'm not surprised at all that we are at this point with this game. Season 5 they have that many seasons planned kudos to the devs I guess for going down with the ship
Whats frustrating about this is the game companies say they can't make a Superman game because its just impossible....but whats more impossible; A Superman game? Or the Suicide Squad killing the Justice league? We wouldnt have cared if it was bad if they only just tried. SMH.

So many problems here. I played through it with my son and I had fun with co-op, but it wants to be a looter shooter with crap loot. The game is mostly the same 5 or 6 missions over and over. There is too much effort made to monetize the game and not enough effort to make it a fun engaging game

Not even joking I check the steam charts for this game sometimes just to see how dead it is and sometimes it’s like at 200 players or something which is terrible but I checked one day and it was at like 46 players or something like that and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game that low on steam especially when it came out this year 😂😂😂

Tried playing Odyssey & Valhalla on ps plus, but it failed to impress within 1st hour & so I left that as well. I don’t know how people love their RPGs when there are literally far better games like Witcher 3, RDR2 & ghost of Tsushima. Such games have raised standards so high that every game from Ubisoft just feels mediocre at best

I traded in for this knowing the issues it had but under the impression that story content would be added later. After the season 1 update though, I will not be bothering to play it again. I would trade it back in, but then someone else might accidentally buy it and play it, and let's face it, I'm not that cruel, even to strangers. I think a hammer solution will be best. What lazy development.

The biggest issue with modern gaming is that developers forgot that people mostly play video games to escape from the political and social issues that are currently plaguing reality. They want to be able to play out their fantasies in a safe, healthy way that allows them to relieve stress. That’s why I’m so into video games. When developers try to inject woke propaganda and unnecessary DEI into a game, you’re not creating a game. Instead, you’re recreating a political propaganda machine that gamers all ready have had to deal with in reality. Why would you want to pay $70 for political propaganda when you already hear enough of that in reality for free? SMH.

But to be frank this game for 20 days had player count less than 200 in a peak. But something changed 2 days ago and played count climbed above 300. I doubt this is trend change, rather a slight temporary increase.
At the same time niche game like ETS2 for past 6 months had 37K to more than 40K players, and the game was released more than a decade ago!
For sure one of the biggest flops of the year. The players who bought into the scam deserved it. We know the live service genre is just a time killing archetype you can plaster to anything, But it has to be somewhat fun. This gets lame is the first 30 minutes.

Rocksteady is not a loss. The best people left already and they get infected by the SBI virus, so there is no hope left. This is not the Rocksteady anymore that we all loved when we played the Arkham games. Would be funny if the promised "offline" mode would come in the form of the final shut down of the game. It would be totally offline 😂 I would hope that at least gamers learn from this, but some will never learn....
