After my exhausting experience with Suicide Squad, I'm starting to think about the Arkham trilogy a lot as something more optimistic. It's one of my most loved series of all time, and I think I'd have a better time talking up Rocksteady for a bit instead.

Plus, it's kind of odd to try and paint the villains going through emotional and physical pain as somehow a blow at the (vigilante) heroes. Most of the Gotham villains willingly and without restraint commit horrendous crimes that unleash untold amounts of pain and suffering on people. Sure, they usually have backstories and motives to do the things they do, but still can choose to not. The whole reason the vigilante heroes are on their tail is to try and figure out what they are up to and to stop it.
While yea, getting clobbered by an angry giant of a man vigilante wearing a million dollar custom-made suit of battle armor isn't going to improve the villain's mental or physical wellbeing, they probably shoulda thought of that before killing, hurting, harming or injuring others as part of elaborate or complicated schemes with planning behind them. Bats is ordinarily more than willing to accept surrender as a reaction to him being present, too, after all. And there have been many olive branches offered to the villains that rather stew in thinking themselves the victims to being stopped from hurting others that you could grow a forest out of them. They chose. They continue to choose. And produce their own pain just as much as feel it. Over simply choosing to be better and stopping it.

If one of the main selling points and points of story for this game is that it takes place in the arkham verse then we should be comparing it, if they want the position points of an established lore then they have to deal with the consequences.

The rewards screen is unskippable because this game started development in 2016 during the loot box craze
The game likely had loot boxes plann d from the beginning, and forcing players to watch boxes be opened every mission would condition them to think and consider buying more. By the time the loot box hype died in 2019, it was likely too late to make guns drop on the ground and be pickup able, as all missions had now been designed around this. The developers also likely didn't see it as a huge deal to leave the work they made in, even if the lootbox component was taken out.
But hey, that's just a theory. A game theory!

@petrenicolae3282 The Batman fear gas segment is an example of individual development, which is barely that. A couple of lines with a hallucination isn't the same as significant interaction with the real team. The hallucinations ADDRESS the characters' flaws, but then do nothing to CHANGE the characters from that point. A character arc should result in being DIFFERENT from how you were in the beginning, unless there's a narrative reason for it (like the character's fatal flaw screwing him over in the end to put him back to square one).
For example, Boomerang, whose boasting and extroverted gesturing is a mask over his insecurity, never gets a moment where someone on the team goes, "You're cool with us, Boomer." Or a significant character says, "Shit, you saved my life! Thanks, man." He never gets respect, nor does he grow in humility to think he doesn't need it. He also never has a moment of introspection where he asks, "Oh, shit, the Flash is dead, now what?" That big kill should have changed his attitude for the rest of the game because Flash was his classic nemesis.
Everyone else is similarly static, except maybe Deadshot loosens up a little bit as he gets more enthused about killing the heroes. But King Shark is the same bloodthirsty but mostly affable guy he was, and Quinn is still the same headstrong nut. None of them addressed their differences, just kept killing people, and then they were friends.

25:47 I think that at this point you did not understand the complaint, the problem is not that they do not treat the Justice League with respect, the complaint is that there is favoritism and it is very inconsistent.
The biggest example of this is the contrast between Flash and Wonder Woman, Flash saved the squad twice, never insulted them and sacrificed his own life for them, despite the attitude and situation and yet when the squad k*lls him, they make fun of him, I understand, they are the bad guys, it's a bad joke, but let's suppose it's their style, but then when Wonder Woman arrives that's when there are problems.
Wonder Woman never treats the team well, her first scene is her attacking them, insulting them and being rac*st towards King Shark (no seriously, Diana, what the hell that wasn't cool), Wonder Woman never treats them well, she never cares about them and she never cooperates and yet she is the only one who receives a dignified and honorable de4th as if she were the best, when not, she acted 100% horrible with the squad.
I mean, Flash, Barry Allen, a hero who even in their worst moments helped and saved them, someone who never insulted them is humiliated and taken as a joke, while the most aggressive girl who genuinely acts like an idiot with them is the one who di3s dramatically?
Flash deserved a dramatic death, if we are going to make this bad joke of making fun of the heroes when they die, do it with everyone, Wonder Woman did not deserve something like that from the squad at all, because she never trusted them, she treated them horribly and it was rac*st to sharks.
Also, it's ironic that right after Wonder Woman dies, Harley is all like "we should change" and then in the next scene she starts making fun of Batman and saying nonsense, like, 0 sense.

They never saw that side of her, all they saw was the God who came in and could go toe to toe with the other Gods and make it out alive. The Suicide Squad is full of morons, why should we care about what they think. Boomerang cutting peoples body parts off as a running gag and constantly foiling the plan, Shark having an ant sized brain, Harley being chaotic, it's really only Deadshot that was the only rational one amongst them which isn't a surprise as he always is in most other media portrayals. Flash was going through the worst of it as her and maintained his heroic spirit, the only part where he starts to treat them badly is when he is mentally controlled and anyway, at least he limited himself to insulting them superficially, Wonder Woman was worse.
(No seriously, what the hell with insulting King Shark like that? That was unnecessary)
And it doesn't resolve my question, why does Wonder Woman have a dramatic death? She died as she lived, being a stupid selfish idiot who acts only on impulse.
She discredited the squad that only wanted to help and wasted the little Kryptonite they had in their shield, the few interactions she has with the group are her acting like a complete idiot with people she possibly doesn't even know, she deserves to have her grave peed on.
Btw, I don't understand, I mean, the girl who di/d for her stupid decisions deserves an honorable de4th while the group of superheroes mentally controlled against her will deserve to be insulted? Idk, I think it should be the other way around.
Even thinking that the Squad are a group of idiots, I don't understand why they feel bad for Wonder Woman, that argument doesn't make sense, if they are unpleasant and that's the joke, that they are also unpleasant to Wonder Woman, you can't just skip it.

It's not like she beat him to a pulp or anything, she never struck a blow against the Suicide Squad, in fact she saved the group squad two times despite not liking them. Sure you can criticize her decision of not teaming up with the Suicide Squad to optimize her chance of winning but she is a warrior, not a genius like Luthor or Batman. It is very inline with her character. Like I said, Wonder Woman was the only character to die NOT FIGHTING THE SUICIDE SQUAD (NOT CORRUPTED/NOT EVIL). They didn't criticize her death because she was never an enemy unlike the brainwashed heroes who the squad had to individually deal with. A lot of people have had a sour spot for Arkham Knight due to it's launch, general gameplay loops and narrative decisions and are now coming around to it more in recent years because it still got a lot more right than this game does. Arkham Origins, the notorious 'black sheep' of the 4, does as well. How much is returning to this game for a greater appreciation worth over the first 4 Arkham games?

I think it is necessary to compare it to the Arkham games. After all, Rocksteady made a big deal about it being in the Arkhamverse during the marketing.
EDIT: Boomerang nearly pissing on Flash isn't consistent with his character. Boomerang and Flash's entire rogue's gallery respect the Flash. It sets them apart from all of the other heroes' villains. Harley's character is unfortunately consistent with Rocksteady's flawed characterization of Harley, but as that first half of the sentence might have implied - Rocksteady fundamentally misunderstands Harley as a character.
Having her react like that is fundamentally flawed. It opposes everything that makes her who she is in other media. She DOES respect Batman. When the Joker's around she doesn't because she's indoctrinated by Joker but when he's not around to influence her she has respect for Batman. In any reality where he died and FIVE YEARS PASSED she'd never say anything like she does in that moment.

Towards the end of the video Fortnight is mentioned a lot. But I actually remember Fortnight in its earliest form. It was a tower defense/ base building game. It started conceptually as there was some sort of zombie disease you’d be dropped into the world complete with enemies to gather loot and resources then come back to your base and build it up for a tower assault. You could have traps and NPCs to man the turrets. The charm and the art style was solid to begin with. At some point the PVP was added later. I don’t even know if the tower defense still even exists as I actually like tower defense games better and detest PVP so I’ve quit following the game because I don’t like it. However that’s my own taste: the game is massively popular, and my own dissatisfaction with the game’s direction aside you can’t fault the devs for seeing something that worked and running with it, good for them! Their success is deserved. That said much like that one successful streaming service it’s hard to replicate that initial success. Not only do you need to add some innovation which is hard on its own, you also have to pull people away from the service they already invested in which is really really hard. I’ve never had a streaming service besides Netflix myself.
So I think this critique is very fair. It really drills down to the issue. I knew this game had no soul I knew that the game at the foundation was flawed there’s no fixing it, but like many other videos I couldn’t quite pinpoint the problem. Now I also like the assets of the game, I think you might be able to salvage those. Metropolis is beautiful and the facial animations are lovely. I am more critical I think of the writing. I don’t think the story works at all. For a serviceable rewrite see Alastor Hacon’s channel where he quickly and with very little research writes the story about 110Xs better. He’s not an amateur though he’s got a published series of books.
Edit: I have no association with the creator Alastor Hacon I like his critiques and I read his books.

Games that 1# objective is making you immersed as the character you are playing as and the world around you. Games that value its art design to much that has the HUD elements be as minimal and clean as possible. Games that let you slowly appreciate the visual elements and environment of the game a
It’s absolutely disheartening to see a studio that I used to value so much release a game that is the complete polar opposite to what I value the most in games. I cannot look at a few seconds of this game without being legitimately nauseous.
The Arkham games also had this love and passion to Batman and his world. That made me look into comic book and appreciate the characters in a new level. So to see the “same studio” throw away established lore from the comics, completely retcon aspects of the OG trilogy and treat Arkham Batman like a mistake…. Disappoint can’t not describe how I felt.

    • @Pixel_Whip
      @Pixel_Whip  2 месяца назад +1

Yes, but not the element where the geometric approach of your character walking into the scene is taken into account in how the cutscene plays out. Character eyelines, positions, general staging, etc will be *slightly* different depending on the angle you walked into the scenes. It takes a lot of work, but whether you think it makes a big difference is up to you. To me, it comes off as a noticeably more natural blend into cutscenes than even just a camera-control swap (in something as early as Sly Racoon which did this as another comment has mentioned). Max Payne 3 is similar, it integrates the final kill-cams into the transition to the next cutscene, and I don't know of any other games which quite do it like that, I do think it's pretty effective. But as far as I remember, there's no 'walking into a cutscene' like in Rocksteady's last 2 main games (but maybe I'm mis-remembering)

A nonsensical storyline with major plot points that were too distracting, disrespect towards the original Arkham-verse, copy-paste boss fights that were just bullet sponges, and basically only 5 mission structures that were repeated ad nauseum (but even then those 5 mission structures were incredibly similar)

I played half way through the campaign and I think it was a great piece of work but if you like live service looters there’s already Destiny and Warframe and Division and when Suicide Squad and Outriders fail I just wonder if there’s just no more room for this genre. I can’t include Helldivers as it’s too specifically its own thing to my mind but now that’s succeeded so well I think there’s less room than ever for a “full-time job” style live service game.
So people from Destiny and WF come and have a go at these great efforts but inevitably go back to their decade-established hobby.
I really enjoyed this and agree with you on most of its strengths and it’s just tragic to see it fail.

I do not think that consumer expectations of "bigger and better" are any reason or excuse for the bad quality we get from AAA developers.
The reason i say that is, there is tons of indi developers with almost no or much less budget and staff to work with.
And still these indi developers seem to be able to create amazing content....even in the standards of today.
With all the money they have and all the people, they could make amazing art.

Is it just me, or has facial capture gotten worse? It's almost like the actual emotional performance capture is still improving, but they've stopped doing pure face scans for the actor. It's like Horizon Zero Dawn all over again, where they inexplicably altered the actresses face in game to look unnatural. There are women with traditionally masculine features, but all they did was make her chin a brick instead of a chin shape. My point is that modifying an actor's face without regard for the uncanny valley gives you this: near photo realism that looks kinda bad just cuz it lacks style.

A lot of people express confusion about how live service cash grabs keep getting released, and it really does boil down to that risk-reward, though I suspect there's some condescension in there as well, especially from any studio who's gathered a large playerbase lauding their games. It's similar to why gacha games are such a draw: the return is so, so absurdly high that it massively outweighs the risk in the eyes of corporate greed. And many of those who get blinded by their avarice simply tend look down on consumers, believing that if there's a large audience already, they'll buy whatever is put out, despite repeated events showing exactly the opposite.
I do think there's some genuine intent behind this in the hands of the devs, who perhaps genuinely thought they could make something incredible, especially if this was previously going to be a new IP rather than a DC game. You can see it in the love they put into building the city. But the writing falls flat, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were due at least in part to having to bend the story to attempt fitting these characters rather than those it was originally intended for. And that's really disappointing.

Only because I've seen this type of comment recently a couple other times, I'll paste my reply to another similar comment that was made a while ago:
I did say that I didn't want to spend too much time on it, so I'll say my last words here.
You're correct that a legacy is not entirely self-contained. It's shaped not just by the core merits of the work one does, but also by the wider effect that work has had on industries, communities, and individuals. Also by the people who have supported you along the way as you mention. And it's also shaped by the perception other people have about you, this is a core part of a legacy.
To me, Kevin Conroy's legacy is defined, at least in part, by the actual quality of his work, particularly by defining one of the most strongly celebrated interpretations of Batman in the animated series. The quality of this work has then has a massive effect on its fans. Batman the Animated Series and the Justice League series have a lot of touching moments brought to life by Kevin Conroy that I know have had a genuine positive effect on so many people. And of course, the Arkham series means a lot for so many people, and that's also in a large part due to the performance Kevin gave in those games. To me though, more than all of this, Kevin Conroy was a huge fan of his fans too. He was always extremely public about his love of the role, and he spent a lot of his time, unpaid, engaging and interacting with fans.
I could go on about his relationship with costars, and about his dedication to working with writers to get the tone of the character right whenever he had the chance, but ultimately his care about the character, and his involvement in the community and fandom is one of the largest reasons he has been so respected for his career portraying Batman. Taking the role of Batman in Suicide Squad was, as far as anyone is able to prove, fully his own decision and something he wanted to do. In other words, an extension of his dedication to the character and his fans, simply because it was another chance to take a Batman role seriously.
Now, I also need to stress: am I defending the way Batman was written in Suicide Squad? Absolutely not. It was handled extremely poorly, and gives zero payoff to Batman's history in the Arkham games. Literally almost anything would have been better. So yes, the writers failed to do justice to what was coincidentally Kevin's last video game performance. Will some people view Kevin's legacy playing Batman in a poorer light because of it? Maybe a small number will, but I'm not convinced it would be any more than a minority. Most complaints I hear are people worried or annoyed about some kind of tarnished legacy, not actually about the fact that their view of his legacy has changed. I don't see less respect for Kevin himself anywhere.
He was playing Batman until he physically no longer could. Again, to me, this is consistent with his love for the character which is what makes his legacy as strong as it has been over the majority of his career. In a decade's time, I doubt Suicide Squad will be mentioned alongside his name anywhere near as often as his other works. He is still the voice of Batman in multiple upcoming animated shows. The quality of the writing in one game is a drop in the ocean against the wider work which will live on in his name, and the fans he has inspired along the way. This is my perception of his legacy, and if that isn't the same as someone else's, that's fine. But to them, I'd just suggest taking a breath, throwing on Mask of the Phantasm, and looking at things more holistically.

Very good video! There's only one criticism that I would consider to be "unfair." The part where you describe the combat and how you deal with grunts, brutes, and tanks.
Obviously, when doing things in the most optimal way, it's going to be extremely simple. You can do this with literally anything. Simplify it and make it sound stupid. Arkham Knight, Blue Lightning Bolts = press Y/Triangle, Yellow Lightning Bolts = hold Y/Triangle, Red Lightning Bolts = Dodge, Press X/Square for damage, occasional enemies that require batclaw or cape stun. Everything else (blade takedowns, special combo moves, quickfire gadgets) are totally optional.
Before anyone sees red and comes after me, I'm NOT saying that SSKTJL has fantastic combat that revolutionized gaming like Arkham. Just that reducing things to the most basic only required parts is rather disingenuous, imo. Other than that, every critcism you levied is absolutely valid. Great video like I said

    • @Pixel_Whip
      @Pixel_Whip  3 месяца назад +1

Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate the genuine and detailed constructive criticism.
I do see your point. Yeah, as a player you really just contend with how elements of a game interact together, and how you as a player interact with them. A play experience is an emergent phenomenon, and doesn't depend inherently on the isolated elements.
I still think it's true that the lack of variety in combat is an issue. The Arkham games are, as I even say in the video, strong via their simplicity. But the game leverages the Batman fantasy with a really satisfying combat loop, and with clean powerful animations, such that there's a lot of extrinsic reason to engage with the optional complexities of combat.
Suicide Squad, however, does have a fairly limited range of enemies and combat approaches,. The real issue here though is that there is no incentive, either intrinsically (like with in-game rewards), or extrinsically (like the satisfaction that comes with pulling off unique moves), that most players will feel fatigued very quickly with a very obvious flatness to the gameplay variety.
So yes, you're right that my criticism actually missed the core of the issue I was trying to highlight. I'm glad you pointed that out.

I bought this game for like $10 after hearing all the criticism and just thinking that I'm gonna find it mediocre at most, being more interested on the charactersand enjoying looter shooters. After around 3 hours, I noticed 3 things that made me stop playing:
    1) The loot doesn't feel rewarding to get. It's barely been a couple of missions and I had already gotten 3 yellow weapons through the bland and boring mission reward screen, with perks that didn't change much their use, functioning basically the same way as their white rarity version, but with better numbers. Compare it to the Borderlands series, Borderlands 2 had some pretty unique loot, but even the more "generic" legendaries, like the Hammer Buster, were fairly useable. Apart from that, the grind for a certain weapon or looking for a gun with a specific part combination always felt rewarding after getting what you were looking for. Borderlands 3 also suffered from the issue of "legendary" loot being too common and getting way too much. However, it balanced things a bit with having all legendaries be really distinct and work in completely different ways.
    2) One of the main interests I had for the game were the story and the characters, the Suicide Squad being one of my favorite group of misfits and villains. I enjoyed their characters a lot at the very start of the game and found their dialogues to be funny. However, while I was looking for some of the Riddler's collectibles, I started to get pretty annoyed becuase the characters would literally not stop talking. I was trying to focus in finding which building the Riddler wanted me to take a picture/scan/whatever, and I couldn't even concentrate for a second due to the constant talking between characters or by any of the controlled Justice League members. It led me to look up on google if there's a way to turn of this dialogue, to find out that not only is this dialogue impossible to mute, but that it's gonna get worse once Brainiac starts using the comms too.
    3) The skill system seems overbloated and overcomplicated for a game with such a simple combat loop. Again, I only played barely 3 hours, so this is all based on just reading each perk, but there are way too many skills that have no business being so overly long and complicated, when the combat loop is so simple and repetitive. I feel like you literally could go though the game just getting better loot and not putting a single point in any skill tree, and there would be very little difference. Going again to Borderlands 3, which in my opinion has the most "complicated" skills in the series, the skills in that game also have some descriptions that are a bit complex or long, but you know what they also have? A little summary that gives you most of the information you need to know to decide if you wanna spend points in that skill. Apart from that, the skills also are extremely beneficial to have, and some skills basically change the combat loop any character has. Let's take, for example, Fl4k, a character which you can spec to do a lot of damage around critical hits and going invisible, or you can also spec into his beast pet, basically turning it into a raid boss and letting it do the most damage, while you also receiving bonuses from that pet. Meanwhile, none of Suicide Squad's skills feel even the slightest to being a game changer, filling like just a stat boost tied to an overly complicated skill.
In conclusion, I started playing because I liked the characters and I enjoy looter shooters. I stopped playing because it absolutely fell on its face in these aspect. I came in barely expecting copper, and I found nothing but shit, non refundable shit. I will admit that the casting is extremely talented and that their lines were really well delivered, so it's a dissapointment that they didn't make the dialogue repeat less frecuently, otherwise I would have no problem listening to them every once in a while.

Anyway, I would argue that the initial failings of '76 are even more confusing given that they had already made and had some success with ESO. So, while your thesis that studio's that do "X" make a mistake by going in "Y" direction seems to make sense, Bethesda's prior success with ESO would seem to counter that.

I will stand by that the publisher should at least get some of the blame for the failure of a live service game. They are never the innocent victim in this mess.
Anthem: EA still forced Bioware to use an engine that wasn't meant for RPGs as part of their initiative to mandate that all of their developers use the same proprietary game engine. This is the same engine that made Mass Effect Adromeda to be what it was. They also decided to provide little technical support for the engine which made things harder. Then you had EAs CEO show up on occasion to playtest the game and provide recommendations, this led to the flight mechanics which meant that they had to restructure everything they had built up to that point. Now to be fair Bioware still shares the overwhelming majority of the blame for Anthem. They had no idea what the game was going to be until a year before release when they saw the E3 trailer. Then there's "Bioware Magic" which was hubris in itself because they firmly believed that the game would come together at the last minute like it did for their other projects and didn't put any care into making sure the quality was actually there because they assumed it would turn out alright in the end.
Redfall: This completely falls on the publisher. Arkane didn't want to make the game and Zenimax only wanted it in order to make their portfolio look good for the Microsoft buyout. Though Arkane is at fault for not trying to at least do their best with the situation. It's quite clear that they didn't care about or want the game and that's kind of important.
Justice League: I can see why people were willing to blame WB outright. Just looking at their track record makes it easy to see why. At the time Rocksteady was a vaunted developer and people weren't willing to put any blame on a company that until now had put out quality games that people enjoyed. Things only changed when Forbes put out the article that basically detailed exactly what happened. Now you have a publisher that didn't ask for a live service game but the developer pushed for it. The implication here though is that anything that wasn't live service was going to rejected anyway, especially with the WBs CEOs current comments on things. Rocksteady fell into the exact same hubristic traps that screwed over Bioware where they firmly believed everything will come together in the end because it worked for their other games which now people are starting to see where chaotic development messes. Except this time around there weren't mental breakdowns happening in closets like with Anthem and you have the two people that pushed the hardest for the game jump ship when they saw it wasn't going to end well.

I feel like theres a better game waiting to happen using this world map. I honestly know nothing about modding, but I've seen what folks have done with games like Skyrim. Be it mods or the devs, it would be cool to see this map used in a way that better brought it to attention🤷‍♂️

I feel like the easiest slam dunk that this game could’ve done would’ve been to not have Batman in the game up until half way through.
Replace all of his interactions with Green Arrow, Ted Cord Blue Beetle, someone who is like Batman but not quite. Still keep the Arkham homages and address them as “symbols of heroism” and say how they all happened in this universe but where ordinary people would’ve been killed, the legendary Batman persevered.
Sell it to the audience like he’s dead.
Then Batman Returns (pun absolutely intended), and he joins you throughout the remaining game as him and wonder woman try to help you fight the Justice League. Batman takes Wonder Woman’s spot in the dramatic death and Batman gets to go out like a badass that Superman struggled to kill, unlike the dumbass who gets shot by a clown on a park bench
