NVM-14 vs PVS-14: Budget Night Vision Monoculars

- Опубликовано: 10 июл 2024
- A comparison between the ATN NVM-14 and the mil-spec PVS-14 night vision monoculars.
NVM-14s are one of the cheaper night vision devices you can buy, typically around $1700 brand new with a Gen 2+ intensifier. Like with a PVS-14 the cost will vary depending on how good the intensifier tube is, so our focus in this video is primarily on the housing and the available mounting interfaces. Спорт
Hop always sticks up for me and all the other gun poors. Merry Christmas Hop, I hope you get a whole box of 9mm this year.

real chads ship them to their european buddies
@@Tillice just buy them in Europe?
@@thateffinguy2422 US gen3 tubes are ITAR controlled. so "exporting" then is legally a big nono. hence the comment
I have both. I agree, the biggest problem with the NVM-14 is the lack of accessories (sacrificial lens), and bridge mounts. In hindsight I would go only with the PVS-14. Thanks for the video 🙏
For sacrificial lens just cut out a piece of lexan and hot glue it and or electrical tape wrap it around your lens. Peel it off if it gets too scratched and replace (or buff it back to clarity)
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj Genius!
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj What I did was buy a Butler Creek scope protector that fit over the edge of my NVM14 lens, and cut out a piece of plexiglass/lexan and super glued it to the scope protector, and then fitted it over my NVM lens. If it's a little loose, you can wrap electrical tape around the NVM14 so that it gets a snug fit with the Butler Creek scope protector. You can also electrical tape the outside if you're worried about it coming off.
I like the butler creek scope protector because the protector flap flips up with a button click and you're good to go. Im not sure if your method interferes with the NVM14 daytime lens protector or not.
@@timring3684 Oh yeah on my right hand side monocular I do exactly that. I have a hole drilled into the cap as it is my quick near focus.
I don't use the daytime pinhole cap at all. I have a NVD case I put my night vision in during the day which keeps the weight off my helmet and also leaves it in the dark. But yes using the lexan will prevent the daytime cap from fitting. You can however 3D print a different daytime cap from TPU. Most of them are designed to fit over the USGI HUD compass.

hey hop i love this budget/affordable night vision content. if you can do more on affordable NODs and IR lasers that'd be awesome. much thanks.
Great Video! I have been debating about getting into Night Vision and have been doing research and there is ALLOT of information to digest about the intensifiers and the generations as well as the Support for the gear after purchase! I was playing around in one of the NVG websites and started to put together a middle of the road kit with a weapon IR laser and helmet and I almost had a heart attack at how quickly $8k was spent.
Check out somogear, Chinese made but it's basically a full power peq15 that'll hold zero on 5.56. just picked one up last week. Just make sure you get the optional potted internals.
Great video of information. Great job Hop! Yes please do another comparison video if the budget allows. 🎩♠️☯️
FYI" The PVS 14 steps up the 1.5 AA battery to 3.0VDC to the tube so it can also run off of a CR123A housing. Also the NVM14 can use either a single CR123A or a single 1.5 AA battery
Great video man! Good info need more stuff like this
I bought an AGM PVS-14 WP Gen 3....I call it God’s eye it amazing.
FW Solutions mini rail mount works like a dream. I used it with my Dipol D128.
I have the J arm for the NVM-14, with the bayonet interface. I got it online about 3 years ago. It exists and it was fairly cheap, but it seems like the newer alternatives are even better, since the FLIR Breach has gained some popularity.
Can you post a link to it? I’m looking for one right now.
@@willwatson9573 This is the link to what I got www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07658MNTW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but however the seller actually sent me a regular pvs-14 J arm at first and I had to file a return to get them to send me the right one. Just look for an arm for the MUM or N-Vision or even FLIR Breach these days. It seems like the market is actually more common now I think than it was then.

Very informative. Thanks for this and the preceding sessions.
Thanks for the video.
Just what i needed

Exactly the info I am looking for. Would love to see the AGM wolf 14 compared. I know it does not compare to good gen 3 WP dtnvgs but it would be good to see if we can find a functioning entry level set up that gets you into the game without spending $3K plus.
As someone who got a gen 3 omni VI pvs 14 with all the mounting hardware, for $1850, it's very possible to get a tube for 2k, usually with some mounting hardware. There's some good purchasing forums on facebook

Have you looked at the Photonis Echo tubes? They are Gen 2+ and you can get them for relatively cheap. They come in white phos and have pretty stellar specs. I've got one with pretty high SNR for being Gen 2+.
Is there any parts interchangeability between the PVS-14 and the countless 14 clones out there?
I highly recommend the Wilcox g-11 if you wanna use bayonet mounting interfaces with nods the lock up is solid, no wobble, or play In anything
Thank you for the overview and comparison. The best advice for those that do not have Gen. 3 NV is to save your pennies and strive to obtain a genuine PVS14. If you can only swing $1200-$1400, look to weapon mounted thermal (e.g. ATN or Pulsar).
Would you consider a "AGM GLOBAL VISION PVS-14 3AL3 3 GEN LEVEL 3" a "genuine" one?
Nvm14 gen 3 holder here. Part of the 35 thumbs down crew lol
I will say that if you can find a good deal, the nvm can still provide a good bang for the buck. I just picked up a nvm-14 with a pristine 2+ tube for only $815. Granted it’s not going to be as good as Gen 3 and the pvs platform is clearly better, but I’m definitely satisfied for the price.

I have the NVM14-WPT is pretty nice for not nearly as much as PVS 14 WP.
I have that jarm alternative from ATN it's okay. Quite a bit of wobble using ele tape to help.
Yes. Hook it up with an AGM. Ive been spying at vampire vision for awhile and I wanna know what I'm getting myself into.
Not that it would be advisable but Is there anyway to mount one of these next to a pvs14 to use as dual tubes?
okay so after watching this video i think if i had to choose between a NVM-14 and PVS-14 i would go for the PVS-14. sounds like buying a NVM-14 only give u problems with finding a right mount and so on.

I have the wolf 14 and it’s not horrible. I’ve used nod’s most of my career and for the price point it’s not bad at all. There’s a lot of good mounts out there, you just gotta dig deep for them. I also have AGM’s mini rail mount coming in which was made for the wolf.

So, could I use tubes from an old pvs7 in the nvm14. And if so are you aware of a kit that I can buy? I have two pvs7s that I would love to use as a dual tube and honestly that's the only way I could ever afford such.
Any recommendations on bridging systems for the nvm 14?
What are the pros and cons between monocular's and the bi-ocular devices? (If there are any pros for the bi-ocular devices). I was thinking of getting a PVS 7 some time ago. I figured if I never planned on mounting the PVS14 to a firearm for passive use, then why not ease the strain on my eyes.
I haven't used bioculars, but I can't imagine there are many advantages, if any.
The bioculars reduce your depth perception to nonexistent. You'll have to look down at your feet while walking basically, and can't do much with them except casually walk around. of course that can all be mitigated by training, but the 14s are just easier to learn
You're going to have to look for the mum-14 j-arm as that is the rail system atn copied for the nvm-14.
Great video Hop. Just curious do you know anything about Lindu Optics? I know it's a Chinese company, but with their prices on housing, and buying a gen 3 tube, it might be a more cost-effective alternative.
Their housing aren't all that rugged compared to ones you can find stateside but if you already have tubes and want to experiment with them, they're good.
Plus, if you have 4 tubes you can use the QTNVG housing because the image collector prism is already there.
@@julian23561 Yea I wouldn't imagine they're better than domestically produced housings, but considering it's roughly the same price point as the NVM-14 I thought it might be a good comparison.
I know KommandoStore was (is?) selling their QTNVG with Elbit tubes, although I haven't heard anything about them.
Either way, I think the best bang for your buck is probably the Night Googles PVS-14 with a commercial spec Elbit white phosphor tube. That being said, I have never gotten my hands on one, and they seem to be perpetually out of stock, but besides that, it seems like a great price for what it is.
@@blrdgg6571 i was on KS the other day and had QTNVGs up for sale with 60-180 day shipping
I would be very interested in watching a video about the AGM wolf-14.
Already did it
Jusr built my first pvs14 and after 1 night of use i already made the decision to get binos with aviation grade wp tubes
Ty so it's available for purchase but I do not want to step on any toes. 3+ and thermal nvg hybrid. Not cool to record in depth yet? Lmk I do not want to step on any toes nor waste on something I can't quite enjoy yet.
is the autogating worth the extra money? What kind of light levels would damage the tube?
Direct sunlight, direct full power IR illuminators and lasers, green lasers, and super bright lights. There's only a few seconds before a burn in occurs and if you leave your tubes exposed long enough, they become permanent blemishes.
If you can get auto-gated tubes, go for em, there's no reason not get them because they'll help prevent blemishes and help you not get blinded by bright lights.
It’s 2021, there’s no reason not to get an Autogated tube if you’re spending money on night vision.
Just between us friends, I would like to have your old nvm after you are through testing it.
The CR123 battery types generally have double the battery life of the AA versions, many take either kind.
BTW we have Gen 3 tubes for sale here in the UK, not sure if we can let Americans use the though 😉.
I'll try to compare battery life between the Wolf-14 on AA and on CR123. I can say that so far, the NVM-14 using CR123s doesn't get as much battery life as the PVS-14 using AAs. Both using brand new lithiums.
@@Hoplopfheil that makes sense, I think a the lower number would be from people using shitty aa vs a good lithium bat
Make sense it is UK legal. UK doesn't seem to mind anything so long as it doesn't shoot a lot of projectiles really fast. Pvs-14 helps a farmer control the pests on their land, I think the UK's going to be all for it. Plus the UK government probably does think of all the taxes they can obtain on such a high-dollar item.
how ironic.. illegal to even let a foreigner look through..but perfectly ok for the government to leave enough gear behind für an entire army...in Afghanistan... and Iraq.
I have one of those polymer mini rail to bayonet mounts that you seem to be looking for. Not sure if you are wanting one to try still but considering I do not use Bayonet mounts anymore I would be glad to sell it.
One of the ones I ordered finally shipped, so apparently they do exist. It just takes about 4-6 weeks from the manufacturer.
Mod Arms makes full speed Patriots speed. I love my hook up and I'm exploring there new technology.
id like to see the gen 2+
So you could actually get into night vision for about $4000 with these cheaper tubes and the Holosun lasers.? Mounts and helmets included? I thought the PVS-14 was around $7000 by itself...Im not sure. Ive never even thought about night vision until right this second. I didnt even know you had YT channel. Ive only seen you on TFB. Glad I found this channel
A basic PVS-14 can be had for easily under $3000 still.
Have one of these j-arm with bayonet design for my mum-14 and that stuff is wobble as hell unless you use some sort of electrical tape to reinforced the adaptor.
my NVM14 is bit different than yours. the switch for example is different and closely resembles the pvs14 and the IR illum is smaller
How'd you get such a great deal on the PVS-14? Still saving. Saving forever for one of these.
If you don't mind a sketchy gray market or used/blem tube, you can find some deals on eBay. Otherwise you should be able to get into a good green phosphor unit for about 2400.

Have you found one with the original gen 2+ tube? Thanks for the info.
After comparing it to a bunch of other devices we're pretty sure the NVM-14 in this test does have a Gen 2 tube. Or, a very very bad gen 3 tube.
@@Hoplopfheil does the regular off the shelf NVM14 have the same tube? Also, does the ATN NVG7 have the same tube?

Is this PNV auto gated. You may have given the info however it would be great to know
The intensifier in the PVS-14 is autogated.
Not sure if its just the video but the nvm14 looks even a bit better in the comparison at the end. -Less edge blur (its quite alot on the pvs14) and also the halo seems alot better on the tube in the nvm14
For some reason the NVM photographs better on camera but the PVS-14 is way more usable to the human eye.
@@Hoplopfheil Ok good to know. On that note: ive been researching budget nvg for a while now and tbh i doubt the wolf 14 is even comparable to the nvm. Both lenses and tubes in those seem barely worth it but maybe thats why theres no video on them yet huh? :P One final thing, even though alot of companys sell the nvm14 housing under their own brand im pretty sure they all come out of the same chinese factory and armasight among others just put tubes in them

NVM14-3 is great enough for me. Cheaper new than some used beat-to-shit "refurbished" PVS 14. My first NOD was a PVS14 and that thing was salty as fuck and blemished. I paid more than an NVM-14 for it. No, I am not interested in building my own PVS14 for slightly cheaper and fucking that up. NVM-14-3 is a solid optic. Crystal clear. Only problem is the lens size like you said, it's noticeable when wearing eye-pro compared to a PVS14, but not horrible.
Agreed. Just got one and very pleased.

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALL 3 OF THEM IF POSSIBLE. (?)
I would like to see you compare a NVM 14 or Wolf 14 to a AGM asp 384 one $1500 night vision vs a decent $1400 thermal. I know they have different use case but I think the image quality would be similar along with usability and I think it would be fun.
That's a good idea. Gen 2 over one eye and a cheap thermal on the other... I would be unstoppable.
Where do i even find "budget PVS14"?
All the units i see cost around 3k.
A "budget" PVS-14 will probably run you at least $2k these days. Keep an eye open and you might luck out.
Spend that money and educate us NOW!!!! ;)
what do you think would be better, (PVS-7 + weapon mounted PVS-14) or (two PVS-14s one head mounted and the other weapon mounted)?
Both of those sound like pretty terrible ideas.
how do you plan on using that weapon mounted 14 with that cyclops NVG on your head?
If you're gonna get 2 14s, just bridge mount them and have dual tubes. Why would you put one on your weapon and the other one on your head? If you wanna be able to passively aim, just get a nvg compatible optic, push it up, and test it out until it's comfy. The PVS 7s are terrible for land nav, I wouldn't recommend them. You've got no depth of field. Walking, doing anything with 14s is hard enough.
Did you ride the short bus?
You can 3d print your own mounts.
When you double the voltage you half the amperage draw.
