Budget Thermal Monocular vs Digital Night Vision

- Testing the AGM ASP Micro TM-160, a short range handheld thermal monocular. The TM160 is probably the cheapest standalone thermal imager on the market, retailing for about $400. That makes it even cheaper than digital night vision like the SiOnyx Aurora.
It has some interesting applications for hunting, and surveillance/static observation. And night time peeing.
"it's just colors and shit. I don't find it that useful". - Hop visiting fancy art galleries probably.
The unspoken rule of owning a thermal camera, you must record yourself pissing once purchased. Pretty neat little cam, I liked your out of the ordinary tests like the printer and the toilet lol.
This is true. And also Brigador is dope.
Now I know. Ill remember that.
Lol I had my son record me pissing
You should've used the marking mode when you were taking a whizz so you could get those Call of Duty hit markers on your pee stream.
That would have been awesome, I am ashamed for not thinking of that.
So what you’re saying is that I should definitely get one of these and mount it to my helmet instead of saving for a PVS-14, right?
Yus
Mount 4 of them like panos
Why not both at the same time?
Dont think so, the use of this device would be just to detect up to 100 m.
Not identify, just detect
Static observation is exactly what this is for. A friend and I were discussing night vision vs thermal. Two advantages to thermal that I could think of right away. One, it works in the day time. If somebody or some animal was hiding in the brush, you could still see their heat signature. Night vision wouldn't see anything. Two, somebody with night vision who is looking at you, doesn't have a big IR illuminator (in the middle of your face) to aim at. Thermal devices give off no IR signature.
Remote IR floodlights are great for keeping your position a secret from NV users, and thermal blankets can shield you from thermal users. It's crazy how many people dont think of their illuminator as a target for opponents.
@ that is good to know about the blanket. Mabey a spray painted thermal blanket with silver on the inside would work better. Or maybe if you are using a thermal setup, using a IR and regular strobe light would be plenty to disrupt things to the point where it wouldn't matter.
@ you'll also overheat fast as hell under one
You know that you can just turn off the ir illuminator
Yep, you usually have a thermal to identify and a NVG to shoot.
Dude you are no bullshit, your channel needs to explode with followers ASAP nicely done!
"So basically there's only 5 guys working in US night vision, and they just make a new company every couple of years when they get bored." literally made me spit out my drink lmao.
The funny (sad?) part is its actually true. Even with L3 and Elbit.
@@tngunworks9065 Nah there's only 4 guys at Elbit now, D left
I had use such devices when protected Kyiv from russians. Because we had no other devices. You cannot walk with thermals, especially in forest. Always someone had to hold a man with thermal and lead him. But, in tranches thermals work well. Some times it detects glass as warm objects. In some conditions we couldn't recognise real distance to object. So, i think that better to have both termal and night vision.
I absolutely love the no-nonsense information and delivery juxtaposed with some significant nonsense like Hop taking a leak in thermal and even showing us a close-up of the result. Even that information could be useful but still, I always enjoy Hop's content even if the product isn't something I need.
I know a guy who uses this exact budget thermal monocular for boar hunting, he uses it to identify heat signatures and switches to his night vision scope to identify the animal and take the shot if its a boar. I hear it works well for him.
Tandem use.. absolutely!
That's how I'd go about it if I weren't poor.
Fusion is what we use at work for checking bearing and pump temperatures - it makes it extremely clear where you need to be looking at the machinery, even for people who are untrained, while still providing a clear image. Not sure that I would use it for any kind of target identification role, however.
LSD mode😂
I have one. I think it's pretty neat. I've tried walking around at night with it. It's pretty hard. The best use case is probably varmint hunting at night where you use the thermal to locate the varmint, and then use a spot light or weapon light to take the shot, and positively ID the animal, if it was too far to ID with the thermal. Another use case that has occurred to me, but that I haven't tried yet, is for tracking animals that have been shot, but maybe didn't drop right away. It seems that it should make find a blood trail at night much easier. One limiting factor to thermals that I think is worth mentioning is that they can't see through glass.
As long as you're tracking soon after the shot I bet it would work very well for that.
I'm not sure how long it takes blood a blood trail's splatter/drops to loose heat. But if it's within a few minutes I'm sure it would show up well.
not useful at all for tracking blood - I have 3 different high end thermals and while I can see blood immediately after shooting an animal - once it hits the ground it cools so fast to ambient temp that it's no longer useful - however, I have successfully used even the cheapest thermal devices countless times to recover the animal by simply walking and scanning for the heat signature of the downed animal in the direction they ran. I have easily found them 50-75 yards in pitch darkness and often in thick brush since the body temp remains above ambient for hours... even after I looked in the same area with high end spotlighting equipment and infrared - the thermal is hands down the best for these scenarios. Even seeing a warm "blob" a 100 yards away indicates that it's "something" there.
If the moon is pretty bright out it would be very easy to hunt with something like that
I didn't realize how bad I needed this thing that I didn't know existed until now
If you're willing to spend more, consider the higher res devices. They'll just be that much more useful.
You could also look for heat loss in your home to know where to improve insulation.

What about it? That sentence didn’t go anywhere. You just stated a hypothetical without any resolution.
Own one. Absolutely love it for the reasons you had mentioned. One thing to remember, night vision will see a IR illuminator. Thermal vision does not.
*inexpensive thermal maybe does not
@@jamesfrancisaloysiuspercev925 Well I guess thermal/optical fusion would. Are there any such devices?
@@Ashley-1917
I have a thermal rifle scope & you can definitely see IR light at its source. You will not see the flashlight like image that you would with IR/night vision, but as one example of you were looking at a building at night with IR night vision cameras, then you would pick up the IR light on the camera itself.
@@jamesfrancisaloysiuspercev925 Not really. Civilian thermals are all long-wave IR sensors which is like 7000-14000nm. IR lights for NV use are in the 850-1000nm range. If you are seeing someone's IR light "at the source" with a thermal weapon sight or common monocular, you aren't seeing the light it produces, you're seeing the heat generated inside the device. That's why you can only see it at the source.
@@paintballplayer700
Right. Exactly what I wrote but with different words, thanks for reaffirming.
The "fusion" mode on thermal cameras isn't great for tactical use but personally I find it useful when using a thermal camera as a diagnostic tool. Something about the colors makes the difference between "atmospheric temperature, nothing here" and "HEAT" a lot more discrete.
I have definitely seen "fusion" mode on cameras meant for exactly that. Mainly in electrical diagnostics, medical. ec.
Yes. We use that color way for electrical surveys.
Thanks
Glad to see you check out the smaller channels with quality content
Honestly at this point if I see a MrGunsNGear comment on a video I know it's gotta be quality content.

An hour’s-worth of info in under 10 minutes... about par for a Hop video.👍🏻👍🏻
You know, you have a specific use case for night vision devices, and don't see the benefit to other people. This thermal device, to me, seems ideal for checking the dark areas of my large yard at night for animals or miscreants. And as far as the mode with the colors in it, it's handy for differentiating between temperatures for diagnosing component issues in electronics. It's easier for people to discern differences in color than shades of grey.
As far as your use case goes, though, you seem spot on.
The best review of this product I’ve found!!
Thank-you! I have been thinking about getting one of these to pair with my PVS14. I have a pretty solid PVS14, and use it to aim my weapon, but the thermal would be very good for detecting animals in the woodline easily, for better scrutiny under i2. I don't plan to PID with thermal, just "alert".
Further, I'd like to use it to trace thermal leaks in my house during this winter.
*Pair with as in use together on a lanyard or something, not HMT it along side my 14.
Love the videos! Looking forward to a video on the MEPC carrier!

"Fusion mode is just Predator vision." There, fixed it for ya! Also, this is probably why Hop didn't call it that: the studios are getting to be such prickysh!ts about their copyrights & trademarks these days... ;-)
Great Job Mr Hop! Really helpful summary of thermal pros and cons and of this device in particular! Good, job, thanks Kindly!
locating a fresh carcass in thick brush would be a good use for one of these. you can see alot from 20 ft up a tree, but once your on the ground you can walk right past a dead deer. If you lung shot one they don't leave much blood, or if you shoot one in the rain, it can wash away the blood. if the animal runs through standing water, even if it's only an inch deep, they won't leave a blood trail. Over the years i've had 3 deer that i haven't recovered. All 3 were due to weather preventing or washing out a blood trail. 2 were bucks that i found the blood, but it was washed away/covered before i could fully track the deer. neither was a perfect hit, one was paunch shot, and the other was a lung hit. The third was a doe, and she ran through a wetland area that had about 2 inches of water standing everywhere, so there was no blood trail at all. I spent hours looking for all of them. we did eventually find the doe, but it was several weeks later.
HOP!! Didn’t know you had a channel outside TFB. Love your content, looking forward to future vids.
I have the Scout; I like it but don’t really have a basis for comparison. I 3D printed a mount for it which is marginally functional
I have tm384 and I can spot a blob of military planes with no lights about 11km+ in the sky where as my pvs14 won't see a thing. I also identified a chinook about 5 miles out.
Thank you for all the good no nonsense reviews. Really helps compare.

Great flow.. lmfao, nice stream. As I'm getting older I'm finding that something to appreciate 😂
I have a AGM PVS 14 3rd gen monocular, pulsar helion xp50 pro 2, flir breach and they are amazing looking thru at night.
If you only had one of those which would you choose?
FYI The AGM ASP is worthless over 90 degrees Fahrenheit (gotta love nighttime lows of 80 plus). The colder the night the more this thing works, but that might be obvious. Any rate I love mine.
A really useful thing to use budget thermal stuff for is to look at your electrical wiring in your home for hot spots. Sometimes in older homes your outlet could be getting too hot due to a poor connection or corrosion on the contacts, lets you see if there is a brewing issue before it becomes a fire hazard. Also, quite useful in chasing down pluming leaks if you have one.
How would you spot plumbing issues?
@@FILMZ1994 crank hot water through the line, if the pipes are hidden, say under your slab, you'll see a hotter region where the leak approx is.
@@I_Poke_Holes_In_Paper very good 👏
I found a hot spot in my fuse box in the house. A few lights and an appliance would trip the breaker. It was a loose connection, could have gotten dangerous. Also found a bad situation on my son's car. Long story short, I walked around his car after he drove and the passenger rear tire hub was HOT. Brake pad was binding.
I have an ATN 4K X Pro 3-14 digital night sight for shooting. I’m trying this monocular for static observations for pest control. I’ll let you know how it works out. I got mine at Focus Camera.
I’m so glad I stumbled onto your channel you should have way more subs than you do
well done man, SUBBED!
The color is to show a much broader spectrum oh heat sources typically useful in industrial settings
I will agree to disagree on that 1. I have mounted to a bump helmet. and I prefer it over my pvs 14. But I'm also using it for Coyote hunting And if you have the setting correctly where it finds the hotspots anything 200 yd it's going to find it.. Something I just purchased running into its paces but the things that I'm finding it's amazing for the price point. I own 3 night vision scopes . A PVS14 in white phosphorus That's $2400 right there . And a Is ATN Thor LT 4x8 And it is kicking the c*** out of It thermal wise . For spotting and then getting onto it with your night vision it's the way to go 100% for entry product
Always with the quality content. 👍
$400? Sold! As a long range ‘yote finder. Get them closer and switch to IR. Put one right between the glowing dots.
Nicely done.
What you need to do is pair that with a gen 3 pvs14 so you can become the actual predator
This was great. Thank you!
Here’s a thought. With a PVS-14 you can easily just close one eye to look through the hand held thermal for finding targets, and then just look at them (and engage them) normally with the PVS-14 and laser
People have been running dual helmet mounted setups with the flir breach
@@talltale9760 So what you are saying is, high quality PVS-14 and FLIR Breach is the strat
@@valiant545 yessir. I’m sure there’s probably better thermal options besides the breach but that’s what I’ve seen a lot of guys running. Best part is that you can leave both eyes open if you have a white phosphor unit since it’s a similar color scheme to thermal
I told you, you should do a comparison of 1500ish thermal and night vision like a agm 384 and atn nvm different use cases but thermal has recently made it a interesting comparison.
Great video 👏👏 well done! 👍🇨🇦

Proximity sensors or give up your position strobe lights... Wouldn't surprise me a bit if that's the real reason they put them in our phones.

Great info and well presented.
I was actually interested in this thing but I was afraid it would be like night vision where you need to dump thousands or you get sightmark tier shit
the screen is smaller than a stamp and for me, strained my eyes trying to use it. The phone app allows you to use your phone as the screen which is better. Honestly it works ok up to 50 yards. The 100 yards is a stretch. You'll just barely see.... something. However it is the best performing thermal at that price. The Taipan 384 has a larger screen and better sensor. For just over a grand.
This *is* Sightmark tier sh!t. The point being, for a huge swath of real world users, Sightmark tier sh!t performs a useful, if limited, function.

So what's your opinion on the Flir Breach?
I got it set up as "Binos" alongside my PVS 14.
The Breach is great for discovery of stuff and the pvs helps identifying said stuff + Im able to do gun things and navigating through terrain without walking into trees
Perfectly suits my need of threat detection at night. Will assess urine detection after purchase.

That be handy for us if you put distance on video what was filmed at current time..
Some of the higher end digital thermal is actually very good. Sig now makes a digital thermal riflescope, and there's a few other companies doing so as well. Digital thermal has the advantage of being able to gather from a much wider electromagnetic spectrum than digital nightvision so it doesn't suffer the slow amplification and processing times, and will spot targets in a zero light environment. And, as you can see, even with this cheap stuff you still have enough contrast to see terrain and other things crucial to navigation. So we're right on the cusp of a revolution, where traditional nightvision will be superseded, at least in civilian use, by much more versatile digital thermal for less money. Higher end digital thermal also doesn't really care how far away the target is; if it's emitting heat, you WILL see it even if it's not visible on traditional nightvision.
I own one and I've moved on to a dedicated weaponsight which can be used for multiple purposes.
Finally found your channel
In Germany we say "Wärmebild findet, Nachtsicht bindet"
"Thermal finds, Nightvision binds"
Will detect small cat-sized animals in trees at night? I don't intend to shoot with it, but some help in locating which tree the brushtail possum (in New Zealand) is hiding will help a lot.
Bought one. Low effective range, around 50 feet. Can detect further , but not effectively .
Cool device to buy, play with, resell, and upgrade.
Now I want one.
Damn, you do listen to your fans, this is epic
One thing you didn't mention is that the footage is aesthetic as fuuuuuck
I bought a 1/4 inch camera picatinny rail mount for this monocular. If you put it in between your irons and have a cold/hot weapon and go to the inverse outside, it will pick up the silhouette of the front nicely but the viability is very poor.

"You cannot really get the lay of the land or the terrain with thermal devices of any kind"
LOL, as someone with professional quality ISR experience, you can definitely see the terrain with impeccable detail using only thermal.
I think most of those super high end thermals integrate vis cameras as well.
@@Hoplopfheil Yeah, usually a wide angle near and a long range color cameras, but you're not incorporating all 3 into one image. That being said, once you start getting into the good stuff like the L3/WESCAM MX30, you can identify specific individuals via thermal only, which is to be expected for the +$2 million dollar price tag.
I was told by a veteran coworker that at 98 degrees plus you can not see people through thermal as they wash out with the ambient temp of their surroundings
so the way to avoid IR detection is to go out just after sunset in mid summer in southern Oregon when it's still like 100 degrees but also getting dark
