I actually beta-tested a few games in my time. These "Betas" are just a marketing word to make people feel like they're getting access to something before they do. They don't. They get multiplayer demos.
I'm kinda surprised Valve hasn't repurposed their discovery queue system to providing a selection of demos featured in an event but presented in the context of a demo disc. There could be both a curated and completely random disc per user so people can both experience something completely new or familiar. All using technology Valve already uses, just limiting the data set to games featured in an event.
time for u to work with valve.

@@tabula_rosa Baseless inflammatory accusations aside, using those cards to buy discounted games in a sale/festival, especially those with demos looks less suspicious than buying full priced expensive games?
Valve is about as fast at making changes as the govt. I'm sure someone has pitched it at some point, but they have lots of money and very little urgency.
This is how I discovered Ghostrunner which is one of my games of the year!
Yesssss ghostrunner is AMAZING. While everyone has been crying about cyberpunk not coming out, ghostrunner has filled the gap with the smoothest gameplay you'll ever find.
I remember like a year or 2 ago I discovered it on reddit. It was so tiny then and its super cool to see how big it is now.
I didn't play Ghost runner, I have only watched trailers, but when you cut someone it felt like there doesn't have any weight. It's like you are cutting through air. It doesn't seem satisfying. How did you feel it?

I totally agree with you! Demo's are exciting, exploring hundreds of games just to find this one hidden gem is ultimately rewarding. Watching reviews and trailers will likely get you to play the games you like, but will rarely get you to play the games you may fall in love with!

Here's hoping there's a Winter or New Years Festival for those who missed out on the Autumn Games Festival.

Dang, Feel like a dumbass for missing out on the festival. On the topic of a winter festival I Wonder if it would be beneficial to combine a winter game festival with the winter sales so that users can see what sort of games are out or coming soon, play the demos, and then potentially get them for cheaper.

I have a feeling Geoff is going to be suicided by EA, that festival had me invested in several titles without having to sit through endless circlejerking and commercials.
Biggest surprise: Suzerain.
It would be a nice thing, but it does require sufficient forewarning and preparation with developers to ensure that it's not just a repeat of the prior, and that developers know there is a deadline by which to have a demo prepared.
Watching this video is actually the first time I heard of the games festival.
It's really not uncommon for me to just not look at the store page on steam for a month or two.
I still remember when I would replay demos thousands of times and would feel so satisfied with just the demo, I wouldn’t get the full game, just the demo. And I miss that so much
I remember me and dad playing the F.E.A.R 2 demo over and over and over till we got the game. Man, life was simpler.
Aye I did that with Dying Light on PS4. Both the inFamous games on PS3 and Arkham City. Now I've pretty much platinumed em.

Yea i remember when i was little. Me and my syster only played the cod2 demo. We didnt have the full game but man cod2 to me at that time compared to cod1 looked light years away in terms of audio desing and level desing. We replayed that one level 100 times. Now i own the game and rarely ever play it.
I feel this with the old Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo for PS3 and 360. We need more demos!
I wish i paid attention to what the steam festival actually was. I miss game demos. And every gaming event i have ever been too did not satisfy or even remotely interest me in what's new.
Demos need to come back. And the Steam Game festival is definitely the right track.
My dumbass ignored it and just assumed it was a sale thing after scrolling through it for 2 seconds. I wish I paid attention to it better so I could have experienced it.

Hearing tracks from Haven in the background was an absolute delight, and I'm glad it got some exposure on this channel, even if just for the soundtrack.
Reason i got into their earlier release (Furi) is because of the soundtrack. Im super excited to relive that experience with this game.

Very pleased, and honestly surprised to see you mention Scott The Woz. Both of you are great channels, and to see you bring up a subject as an example from arguably one of his most underrated topic video brings a smile to my face.
My Pizza Hut demo disc for the PS1 introduced me to MGS1, and a lifelong love was born. I got it for Christmas that year from my great grandmother and beat it probably 15 times over the years.
I have a fondness for demos that will never leave me, and I couldnt agree more.

My earliest gaming memories are of my father and I spending time together on Gamershell and Reflexive Arcade, finding demos for new games. For years, I spent my time browsing demos from games long forgotten. I look forward to a marketplace others can do the same now. Hopefully, this sticks.
As a kid demos were my sole reliance. Got an Xbox with "The Ultimate Disc" which was trailers and demos, one of which was The Silent Cartographer from Halo which I played over and over and over until eventually getting the full game and being able to play Assault on the Control Room finally. Like a blissful Christmas it was.

If you're enjoying the Haven soundtrack, you should absolutely play Furi. Same developers, has some Danger tunes in it, and it's an all-around wonderful experience. I highly recommend it!

Oh yes, I used to absolutely love demo discs from gaming magazines. I remember Half life 2 one blew my little kids brain away.
There have been whole game franchises I would've never been exposed to without game demos being offered. Yes, my first encounter with Final Fantasy was when I came across the FF13 demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace..
Beautiful, Ray. This perfectly encapsulates how it felt playing Jampack demo games on PS2 for me when I was 10.I think that this move is THE move that gaming should make. Especially to give smaller developers an actual platform with visibility.

@@bobflob5375 Well yeah, I think that and double A titles will do a lot lmao. It's pretty much been proven at this point. Triple A has done nothing but fail for the better part of 10 years.
Speaking of demos, I remember sinking hours upon hours into the Playstation 1 interactive sampler volume 7 (black disk with red stripes), it had demos for Einhander, Tekken 3, Tomba, Blasto, Gran Turismo, Gex, Jersey Devil and a few others I probably forgot, but man that was alot of fun for what it was.
I couldn’t agree more. Demos allow you to take a break from reading the same copy and paste reviews and actually get to try a bit of the game, and as you said, it’s nostalgic.
It's always worth taking the time to watch a Racyevick video properly. Excellent, as always.

This has also been my biggest surprise after getting PS Now. Just installing games to see what they're like and experiencing games I normally wouldn't. Even when the game isn't my taste, it's still quite fun and useful just to give it a riskless try. And sometimes it leads to the discovery of real diamonds (I might have never given the brilliant Dead Cells a run).

I’ll always remember XBLAs summer of arcade where they advertised loads of new arcade games and I just downloaded so many free trials, from TRIALS HD and Splosion Man to Toy Soldiers and Hydrophobia, that’s what I feel this generation of consoles lacked
Your direct, gameplay oriented approach to reviewing and discussing games reminds me of what I am really here for when I play video games, to have fun. I feel like with a lot of my preferred types of games, looter shooters and live services in general, I lose sight of that fun-factor in the grinding and optimization, and I am grateful to have you and your videos remind of it. It was a compelling way to get people to buy games in different series (MGS and Zone of the Enders), but the popular choice is to just tie it to digital preorders which basically means only super fans can try it early and there is basically no way to try it but buy it at first price or second hand.

your insight towards Demos remind me why collecting demo discs from Playstation 2 Magazine from 2003 to 2007 was so much fun and nostalgic. Discovering the unknown without any knowledge of developers, gameplay, concepts or any expectations in general.

It's crazy when publishers try to sell demos as a 'pre-order bonuses' rather than as enticements to encourage you to buy games... Although, I do wonder if the big improvements in game streaming might bring back some of this (particularly as it somewhat eliminates the storage/download constraints demos have too)
Because they know that their new AAA game is not that great so they can't let you try it before you buy or you'll realize how mediocre it is and you definitely won't buy it.

Lucas, just like you I also tried out demos from this festival for the first time this year and I really enjoyed my time with them (Ghostrunner was so fun) and I pretty much agree with everything you said in the video. Sure we don't know how these demos turn out for the developers but for gamers, it's a lot of fun because one gets to experience an interesting-looking game directly instead of just watching their cinematic trailers, choreographed gameplay etc. *Game Festivals is genuinely a cool idea which needs more attention from both gamers and the press.*
I didn't even realize all these shows wouldn't be around as usual this year... I have no patience for the awful delivery and endless padding. Demos are much better for me. For real, I've encountered so many interesting games due to demos. Did I buy all of them? No, because a lot of them were outside my preferred genres, but it was fun to experience different things for once.
I'd say my most successful demo experience was CrossCode. Saw a random video on it, found out they had a browser-based demo, and was left wanting more immediately after I finished it. I paid full price, binged the hell out of it for over 100 hours, and bought the soundtrack. It was my Game of the Year, and it remains one of my favorite games of all time.

I grew up in the 90's so reading a magazine and playing demos was a monthly ritual and I was actually excited about what the next month would bring. You'd think that in the internet age, demos would be way more common but no, publishers demand you spend your hard earned cash without having the slightest clue about how their game plays and feels.

Demos are usually "Early Access" now. Pay for the entire game but only play a piece of it for now.

I personally feel like the abandonment of demos has contributed to the decline in quality of games in the past years, think about it, if a game is bad and someone plays a demo of the game, of course they're not going to buy it but if there's no demo then lots of devs and publishers can get away with cutting corners that the consumer won't see until they buy the game because they would never showcase those rough edges, so it's only natural that demos would hurt the sales of some of the current AAA games
Having a demo of your game nowadays shows me that you are either confident in your game or you have a passion for it and are eager to show your creation to the world but some years ago when demos were common practice, not having one would set off a few red flags for me

6:43 I hate this argument so much. "Demos decrease sales!" If people only need to play a half hour of your game to find out it's not worth their time, maybe make a better damn game, it's a ridiculous anti-consumer notion. Instead of making better games and being confident in your product, publishers would much rather trick people into buying unfinished and downright terrible games.

I've never liked E3, and I've always championed demos. Buying blind is horrible for the consumer and even risky for companies, as their entire business then hinges on past reputation - any mistake they make is all consumers will have to go on. On the contrary, demos allow you to forgo past biases and just try the thing before you dedicate money to it.
We don't need cringe compilations and pre-animated footage. We want games; let us play, _then_ we'll pay.

Honestly, I didn't even know the festival was a thing until I saw this video. Whenever I boot up Steam I tend to beeline towards what I intend on playing. But while watching this I needed to pause and add a couple of the games you showed footage of to my wishlist! It's definitely something I need to watch out for next year.

I rarely comment on bigger channels, but I just gotta say: Thank you for that small "Trans-Rights-Rant"
Imagine grandstanding morally on something that results in 40%+ of people who do it offing themselves within a decade. Imagine thinking you're morally superior by not helping these people who, like many, feel this void in their lives and seek to fill it to no success by something that will permanently ruin their bodies and cause them physical, psychological, and emotional suffering. I'll be kind enough to assume that you're still ignorant as opposed to legitimately a sicko that enjoys the promotion of harmful things.
Or just someone with family and friends living happily long after transitioning.
@@Raycevick Funny, within the last year, a man I know IRL expressed the same sentiment about two people who had transitioned. Both of those two people he spoke highly of are dead now of suicide, one aged just 27 and the other 33. The 33 year old didn't leave a note, but the 27 year old did, apologizing, of course, but importantly the line, "I wish someone had talked sense into me in 2014," (when he transitioned). But I'm sure your "happily transitioned" friends and family mean affirming their choices is more important than helping others who, in significant numbers, as the statistics famously show, do this in a time of mental vulnerability and come to hate themselves later for having committed to something that they can't undo. But hey, I guess 40%+ is less than the opposite figure, after all. All is right in the world. :)))))
@@innoclarke7435 The consistency with all of those I know, is that the mental, physical, and emotional torment they've faced, comes from parents, coworkers, and strangers who treat them with total disrespect. It's never as simple as avoiding one action, if it was, these issues would've been resolved ages ago.
Even if your statistics were 75%, that doesn't dispute the concept of granting basic human dignity and respect to a group of people whose lives are too often discounted entirely.
I didn't even realize that was a thing going on, and was busy with a whole lot of anxiety over my future, my current work, and a buncha other personal stuff. Nearly everything you showed in this video peaked my interest in a way not a single AAA game in the past years has done. This definitely needs to become the norm!
