There is nothing wrong with raytracing per se, it can create stunningly and realistic looking graphics. Sadly a lot of developers think that it looks realistically if water reflects like a liquid mirror of mercury, moist walls look like they are covered in baby oil and to have totally exaggerated lighting everywhere, which kills any sense of realism that raytraycing would have otherwise provided.

But if you think about it for a second, it's exeggerated a lot. That is like turning up the colour level of your TV to +100 and go like "Look dem colours!!". These visuals remind me of the mid-2000's when everybody was overdoing the bloom effects. Half of the time the light-bleed looks blurry, like you're in a steamy sauna. This look got old and stigmatized, and is typically viewed as a signature novelty of it's time. But apparently it's cool AF again now, because it's done with RTX, and RTX is the new thing. Until the world catches up and the RTX-craze settles, the people who aren't a fan are "probably just secretly crying over not having RTX capable hardware".
Eventually this effect will either get shelved or toned down and used sparingly. It's amusing to watch history repeat itself.

There are a lot of areas where the whole room is pitch black save for a tiny little light source in the middle acting more like a spotlight than a true torch that bathes the room in a glow. I’m not knocking the dev’s work no one else is doing it but it could be improved. I think he may have intended it to be such a harsh contrast for the spook factor though.

The ray tracing is causing vertical lines, columns, and rows of voxel to be highlighted and overemphasized. It uses lighting to specifically draw your attention to the most negative aspect of voxels, forcing you to notice problems where you wouldn't otherwise see a problem. It looks bad and ruins the voxel models. I don't want to look at a bunch of "columns" and "rows"

While these raytrace mods are technically impressive, I find them most of them (including this) to be overblown and rather ugly to be honest. The first thing that sticks out to me is how dark everything is until its illuminated by a clown light explosion.
I can see a horror-themed fan WAD using this to it's strengths, but otherwise.... ehhhhhh.

@@KudoRedfox 'Dark' Doom is a valid interpretation of the material, but probably best if it's actually designed with that in mind. And in cases like Doom 64 or Doom 3, I don't they're dark to the extent that they wash out visual clarity. But that's all I see in this video. Coupled with the extreme colored lighting, it just becomes a mess.
I wouldn't mind some WADs designed with this look in mind. But backporting it to classic maps just looks 'overjuiced'.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. When trying to enhance older games with very simple visuals there's a fine line between building on older limitions and adding extra guff that overwhelms or clashes with the original art. This mod seems to riding right on that line. Some of the darker areas look fantastic, just the sort of moody atmosphere that you'd imagine for an infested facility with only emergency functions still working. On the other hand the bizzarely reflective water and ugly bloom/fog effect in outdoor areas remind me more of minecraft with too many shaders installed instead of a doom. I'd probably really like a more restrained version of this.

I'm usually not a purist or anything, and I can enjoy a good remaster with a modernized look, but all the footage i'm seeing here looks gaudy and stupid to me.
There are some effects that just don't work with some games. Here, the ray tracing seems to actually be fighting against the game to make it worse.
I'ts all a matter of tastes of course, and more power to people who enjoy that stuff, but persponally, I find it misplaced and trashy, and a huge waste of time and effort.
I'm pretty sure most people will try if for a session or two, then stop using it altogether once the novelty wears off.
