It is always inspiring and refreshing to see someone who can bring both sides of their nature into their work.

Jimmy was a guitar god, no doubt, and a deep influence on his successors. But not often seen is the only video ever filmed of Jimmy jamming on a 12 string acoustic guitar. Every time I revisit that clip, I see a modest, kind of shy guy reaching into himself for a new way to express himself musically. Try "Wild Thing", "Like A Rolling Stone" or all "Along The Watchtower". Note that Jimi is playing a right hand guitar left handed so his guitar is upside down. Jimi is probably the first electric guitarist to really use feedback and other techniques that can't be done on an acoustic guitar as a routine part of his performance.
This is from Jimi’s debut at Monterey, which is why he showed off all his tricks. Paul McCartney insisted he appear. You should see Wild Thing that closed his set… no spoilers. A lot of people say Jimi was the best guitarist, which is true but he’s also one of the best musicians. I think that the reason that Jimi and Stevie Ray plays guitar behind their heads and other ways is because they know their instrument so well that they strive for new challenges. I don't think they mean to show off but rather reach for new creative ways to play. Many musicians have to move while they sing or play their instruments. I noticed that you felt the rhythm too. You had to move to feel the music. If it feels good, do it!
Jimi is a left-handed guitarist...the guitar he's playing is for a right-hander..if you look at the keys they are facing the floor...therefore he's playing the gat upside down, so the strumming & finger positioning are in reverse to how a cacky would normally do..AWESOMENESS ARTIST..
One of the big ones who was there in Woodstock 69, unfortunately already died in 1970 (RIP). At that time the electric guitar was still in its infancy and Jimi was certainly one of the greats who knew how to play it.

Nobody was playing that loud or heavy. The only bands that came somewhat close to that sound were The Who and Cream and The Yardbirds, but even their efforts were still a couple levels behind. Jimi Hendrix showed them all how it was done! It's a little harder to see that now because playing guitar loud and distorted has become so routine today.
Jim I was the experience. At times he would end his concerts by setting his guitar on fire. He was ultimately gifted on the guitar, and was a natural showman. He is truly missed.

Am I one of the few people who love "Purple Haze"? I almost never see people recommend it. "All Along the Watchtower" is another, and everyone else has mentioned even more. You are not alone Brother. I was a bit sceptical when I heard 'Purple Haze' for the first time, having gotten used to 'Hey Joe' and 'The Wind Cries Mary' - both songs which I couldn't hear enough of. But then I realized that 'Purple Haze' was an entirely different approach and once I had opened my mind, I understood more of the versatility of Jimi. His adapting of 'All Along the Watchtower' showed that he was happy to perform the songs others had written. I got to like his version of 'Watchtower' over Dylan's - I can understand why Jimi picked this particular Dylan song. It's all about the lyrics, add to that Jimi's driving interpretation - amazing. He also covered 'Like a Rolling Stone' - again, the lyrics must have spoken to him. He was open to all influences. The Beatles had just released 'Sgt Peppers' and two days later he opened a live gig with it, with Eric Clapton and at least one Beatle in the audience.
Years back, Billy Gibbons told a story on Howard Stern about when he was in the Moving Sidewalks and touring with Hendrix. Jimi used to have console stereos in his hotel rooms and once told Billy to check out an album that was blowing him away. That album was Jeff Beck - Truth.
Put this in perspective, at this point in 1967, rock and roll was only really 10-15 years old. Most "rock" was still very pop-inspired. Jimi changed everything!
Now, THAT.... was the proper response to seeing Jimi play a guitar with his teeth for the first time! As far as I'm concerned there is no better guitar player than Jimi Hendrix (well..... may Django Reinhardt) His sound was completely and utterly unique and unmistakable. Hendrix is the most influential guitarist Bc he was doing things at the time nobody else was doing. He died at age 27. Imagine how great he would have been with another 20+ years experience.
I've been playing guitar 40 years. I know everything about Eddie. Can play everything he ever recorded. And he has said that he liked Hendrix. But when asked about who influenced him, always said his Dad and Clapton. The topic was, who's been more influential. Hendrix influenced the 60's and 70's. But Eddie has influenced guitarist from the 70's to the present day. Eddie was a monster who ushered in Modern day playing. It's no disrespect to Hendrix. It's just a stated fact. But most top guitarist list Hendrix as #1, which I've never believed.

you should try some of his recorded work-Jimi really stands out as a songwriter/ arranger that doesn't always translate well in the live recorded videos due to the poor quality of live sound recording at the time. All of his albums are recorded masterpieces, worthy of your attention. Great reaction, I dig the work that you do!

Jimi laid the groundwork for those who came later. They are standing on the shoulders of a giant. You should check out his songs where he really lets the rock 'n' roll gods come into his soul and his fingers start flying like he is possessed. Jimi was a template for cool, the only artist of that era to have an Afro that was NOT a perfect bubble. No one else had an effed up Fro - but on Jimi it just looks so cool. Try Orianthi "Highly Strung" and Stevie Ray Vaughan (That's the SRV in other comments) He does Jimi's "Voodoo Child" live at Austin City Limits. Other greats include Gary Moore "Still Got The Blues For You" live. Terry Kath of Chicago died too soon and is grossly underrated. Best version of "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" is from the tanglewood concert and be sure you get the hole thing and not the cutout Make me smile. Look for 14 minutes long. Also from the tanglewood concert is "25 or 6 to 4". Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" And then there is Alvin Lee of Ten Years After. "No Limit" , "I'd Love To Change The World" and from Woodstock "I'm Going Home" Also from Woodstock is the breakout performance of Santana "Soul Sacrifice" with the conga drums . And a studio version of "Black Magic Woman" These are all must dos and I can 2nd what others are saying. I would put Orianthi 1st because she is not well known but deserves to be and is Fantastic.

It was his first time back in the USA as a star. It was in Europe he got his first major break through. I saw Jimi Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix Experience) twice in the Winter/Spring of 1968. He was my man back then, and more than a half century later, he's still my man .....
I agree that SRV took it a step higher than Jimi, but Jimi (to me) is better because he did it from scratch. SRV had a blueprint to work with. I love both equally though!❤
Absolutely agree that the innovation matters, being there first matters. And if Jimi had time to lay down a discography like SRV who claimed Jimi as mentor there would be no argument who was the teacher and who was the learner.
SRV took it a step further technically with the playing but nobody and I mean NOBODY played with more creativity and passion then Jimi. SRV was a master technical blues player but Jimi was a master etheric player, if that makes sense to you... Peace

I absolutely disagree. People like to say that because there isn't much good recorded footage of Jimi Hendrix. Whether it is because it was only the late 1960s or most of it is blocked. I recommend the blues album, especially "Electric Church Red House" . Live at the fillmore east 1set. "Burning Desire" is absolute madness.
A couple of things. You should watch Jimi paint an audio masterpiece with his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Absolutely brilliant. And then turbocharge Chuck Berry's 5o's classic, JOHNNY B. GOODE by putting petal to the metal and burning some carbon off the rods as he accelerates through the corners of the song without losing it in the corners.

Hi Empress! Jimi, like Stevie Ray later on, lived and slept with his guitar. That was the level of their dedication. They were both guitar virtuosos Jimi was playing in the '60's and early 70's. Stevie Ray came along about ten tears later, and was really influenced by Jimi. Jimi pioneered a lot of the electronic effects while playing live. That and his style of playing was a huge influence on the next generation of guitarists. There are some great videos of Jimi playing live at the Fillmore East, Monterey Pop Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival and at Woodstock. His rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner' at Woodstock is really a monumental performance. Woodstock took place during the height of the Vietnam War, and his playing reflected not only the horrors of war, but also the cacophony of outrage in the country of those who wanted the US to pull out and those who wanted to see it through to the end. His whole performance at that festival is a classic, and is a must see and hear for all guitar fans. Thanks for the videos, I love watching these great performances with you 💗

If you look close you'll see that he's playing a righthanded guitar lefthanded. Jimi is considered the greatest guitarist of all time not only by fans but his fellow guitarists. I forget which other great 60's guitarist said it the first time they saw him he looked at the other great guitarists he was sitting with and said "he just ruined the guitar for us". Listen to him playing the "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock.
Both were Great Guitarists, No Doubt!!! However, if u want to truly hear Jimi play truly otherworldly, u must view the whole "uncut" Live version of Voodoo Chile at Woodstock!!! Most RUclips versions are chopped up but still show u a glimpse of what this man was capable of back in the day!!! The other comes off the album called "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts", which had some amazing cuts like "Hear My Train a Coming" from the 1968 Winter land Concert and "Are You Experienced?" from I believe the same concert!!! Truly Otherworldly!!!
I consider Jimi the best guitarist in history. There are valid arguments for others, especially in technical skill, but Jimi invented techniques that are standard today.

Purple Haze is an obvious choice but Purple Haze from Jimi Plays Berkley is one of his best performances ever 🙏🏽🎸 in my opinion..

you should try some of his recorded work-Jimi really stands out as a songwriter/ arranger that doesn't always translate well in the live recorded videos due to the poor quality of live sound recording at the time. All of his albums are recorded masterpieces, worthy of your attention. Great reaction, I dig the work that you do!

a number of artists did a tribute to the Beatles George Harrison, including the self professed "the next Jimi Hendrix" (aka Prince) which included Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George's son Dhani, a wonderful rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps - check out the Prince solo at the end!
Jimi's performance at the Woodstock Festival (which ran so far behind schedule he had to start his set in the morning as people were going home) gives a more rounded idea of his music and includes his unique (and politically-charged) take on 'The Star-Spangled Banner'.

Jimi laid the groundwork for those who came later. They are standing on the shoulders of a giant. You should check out his songs where he really lets the rock 'n' roll gods come into his soul and his fingers start flying like he is possessed. Jimi seemed kind of disinterested in this performance, but he was a temperamental person.

lolol yes jimi was a guitar god. he played a right-handed guitar left handed if i remember correctly? so he's definitely self taught. & i'm pretty sure he was LOAdED during this performance on acid or something because he's feeling himself as you can tell. a great musician and one of my all times favorites.
this was how the record company wanted it back then under 3 minutes or no radio play Jimi did not like it. I say check out songs especially live where he played them longer for example from the Blues album Once I had a woman, Hear my train a comin', red house and so many more of his song in general were just amazing at Woodstock his star spangled banner or improvisation

Fun fact: Jimi Hendrix learned how to play left handed on a right handed guitar. It was the only guitar available for him at the time. He just switched the cords. His whammy bar and dials were at the top, instead of the bottom. Greatness finds its way.

Jimi was a template for cool, the only artist of that era to have an Afro that was NOT a perfect bubble. No one else had an effed up Fro - but on Jimi it just looks so cool. He had a superstar swag the very first time he walked on stage.

YES JIMI !!! A lot of guitar players were influenced by Jim. Try Orianthi "Highly Strung" and Stevie Ray Vaughan (That's the SRV in other comments) He does Jimi's "Voodoo Child" live at Austin City Limits. Other greats include Gary Moore "Still Got The Blues For You" live. Terry Kath of Chicago died too soon and is grossly underrated. Best version of "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" is from the tanglewood concert and be sure you get the hole thing and not the cutout Make me smile. Look for 14 minutes long. Also from the tanglewood concert is "25 or 6 to 4". Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" And then there is Alvin Lee of Ten Years After. "No Limit" , "I'd Love To Change The World" and from Woodstock "I'm Going Home" Also from Woodstock is the breakout performance of Santana "Soul Sacrifice" with the conga drums . And a studio version of "Black Magic Woman" These are all must dos and I can 2nd what others are saying. I would put Orianthi 1st because she is not well known but deserves to be and is Fantastic.

Absolutely agree that the innovation matters, being there first matters. And if Jimi had time to lay down a discography like SRV who claimed Jimi as mentor there would be no argument who was the teacher and who was the learner.
Man stands on the shoulders of man. If SRV got his blueprint from Hendrix, Hendrix got his from Buddy Guy.
SRV took it a step further technically with the playing but nobody and I mean NOBODY played with more creativity and passion then Jimi. SRV was a master technical blues player but Jimi was a master etheric player, if that makes sense to you... Peace

I absolutely disagree. People like to say that because there isn't much good recorded footage of Jimi Hendrix. Whether it is because it was only the late 1960s or most of it is blocked. I recommend the blues album, especially "Electric Church Red House" . Live at the fillmore east 1set. "Burning Desire" is absolute madness.
A couple of things. You should watch Jimi paint an audio masterpiece with his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Absolutely brilliant. And then turbocharge Chuck Berry's 5o's classic, JOHNNY B. GOODE by putting petal to the metal and burning some carbon off the rods as he accelerates through the corners of the song without losing it in the corners.

People used to believe that chewing gum kept the muscle near your ear canal moving and would help protect your hearing. They also believed that chewing gum would prevent sea sickness, and other inner ear balance issues. Just some old musicians.

Hi Empress! Jimi, like Stevie Ray later on, lived and slept with his guitar. That was the level of their dedication. They were both guitar virtuosos
Jimi was playing in the '60's and early 70's. Stevie Ray came along about ten tears later, and was really influenced by Jimi. Jimi pioneered a lot of the electronic effects while playing live. That and his style of playing was a huge influence on the next generation of guitarists.
There are some great videos of Jimi playing live at the Fillmore East, Monterey Pop Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival and at Woodstock.
His rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner' at Woodstock is really a monumental performance. Woodstock took place during the height of the Vietnam War, and his playing reflected not only the horrors of war, but also the cacophony of outrage in the country of those who wanted the US to pull out and those who wanted to see it through to the end. His whole performance at that festival is a classic, and is a must see and hear for all guitar fans.

If you look close you'll see that he's playing a righthanded guitar lefthanded. Jimi is considered the greatest guitarist of all time not only by fans but his fellow guitarists. I forget which other great 60's guitarist said it the first time they saw him he looked at the other great guitarists he was sitting with and said "he just ruined the guitar for us". Listen to him playing the "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock.
Both were Great Guitarists, No Doubt!!! However, if u want to truly hear Jimi play truly otherworldly, u must view the whole "uncut" Live version of Voodoo Chile at Woodstock!!! Most RUclips versions are chopped up but still show u a glimpse of what this man was capable of back in the day!!! The other comes off the album called "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts", which had some amazing cuts like "Hear My Train a Coming" from the 1968 Winter land Concert and "Are You Experienced?" from I believe the same concert!!! Truly Otherworldly!!!

I consider Jimi the best guitarist in history. There are valid arguments for others, especially in technical skill, but Jimi invented techniques that are standard today.
