I’ve been suffering from severe dry eyes for 3 months, and have spent $$$ on different eye drops. Since I’ve started to use the Systane drops with the mineral oil, I’m finally feeling almost completely normal again. You’ve been my life saver, thank you!
In my 30 plus years of having dry eye, you are the only doc who knew exactly why my eyes were constantly irritated and still dry -- it was because of the BAK. I tossed all the drops with BAK and I've been using Systane Complete PF since this video and no more pain, burning, or rebound dry eye. Thank you!
It is now Oct 2024 and I am 75 years old. I am getting ready for Cataract Surgery in Nov. Thank you very much for all this information about dry eyes and what to use. I am currently using Systane Complete eye drops a couple times a day to keep my eyes lubricated before my surgeries. Before this time I never used any eye drops and did not feel of any problems with my eyes. Thanks for the environmental things to do to help my eyes. Thanks for the video. Take care.
I am 76years old and getting ready for Cataract Surgery in November. I am currently using Systane Complete eye drops twice a day and taking some nutrients every day. Thanks to this wonderful video for education,
I have some horrendous dry eye symptoms. I tried washing my eyes with diluted baby shampoo but it a dried my lids and lashes out making a itching and symptoms worse. I have found that collodial oatmeal well rubbed into a soft damp washcloth works well to clean my eyes without drying my lids and lashes out. I have since discovered Garnier micellar water with glycerin and rosewater. It is also a good in between washes way to get rid of grit and dirt on the eyelids and lashes. Please note: this product is not meant to be used in the eyes. I use Refresh liquigel and Refresh gel drops they give better release than most eye drops. Both of these drops are much less expensive on Amazon. Blue light blocking glasses help me when I have to expose my eyes to light. I use a humidifier. Unfortunately I have had to give up reading and TV and limit my phone exposure severely. I hope this information can help somebody.
intelligent, informative, easy to understand, makes suggestions clear, not associated with any company, and all excellent advice. Thanks for being so straightforward and honest.
Many, many thanks to you, Dr Chua! I followed your video, I applied your guidelines and my dry eyes syndrome is much better now. I'm from Europe and I appreciate it as being better medical advice than in my country even from an oftalmologie hospital. My syndrome was very severe, it took a few months to be better. Now I can read books again as it is my passion. Indeed Systane, the mask twice daily and the massage only in the evening work fantastic. I use 3 different types of drops plus an oftalmologic cream with vit A in the evening after the mask and the massage and in the morning (but in a smaller quantity and without massage). The nr of drops application dropped from 20 times daily to 5-6 times. God bless you!
Thank you so much Dr. Chua for sharing these valuable tips. I am currently under the care of an ophthalmologist and everything you shared is in agreement with my care plan. I had previously tried separate drops and the Systane tears have by far been the best drops. Your video is the 1st I have seen on this topic so kudos to you for sharing your expertise in this space.
@@docfaustus6303 oops !! Silly me 😂 Systane Balance Dry Eye Symptom Relief 10 ml in a small white plastic bottle with deep purple label . ( There are different Systane ones with other coloured labels ) Also have had prescribed : Hylo - Forte 0.2% ( intense lubrication ) Both are preservative and phosphate free . The Hylo-Forte are in a bigger bottle and last longer and easier to apply .Both can be bought on Amazon or from most high street chemists but mine are on repeat prescription from the glaucoma clinic that I attend every 2 months . Hope they'll hep you 🙂
I've had dry eye for many years. I used to use restasis, but when I started a new job my new insurance wouldn't approve restasis (which costs about $400/mo.). I use Systane and tried using the new eyedrop bottle, but I was unable to squeeze the bottle to get even one drop out. I gave up after several tries. I use the individual vials, even though it's a waste. I also use a humidifier in my bedroom. I don't have this problem when I visit my mom in Florida which is very high humidity.
@medhikasingh6327 Hi. I'm not sure what you mean, but I do have tears when I cry and sometimes when chopping onions. I have Sjogrens disease - one of the symptoms is dry eyes/dry mouth.
I have dry eyes, along with glucoma, best treatment i find that works for me is the warm compresses, i use make up remover pads and warm water place them on eyes often as I feel nesscary, cheap and effective
Systane didn't help me at all. But I found out it was air conditioning in my house that was my problem. On days when I can do without airconditioning and can open the windows I'm not bothered so much with dry eye. The AC was drying out my eyes drastically.
This was extremely helpful! I have had my puncts dilated in the past for my dry eye. That helped for a long while. On my last appointment earlier this month, my doc kind of ignored that. I'm not sure why. However, what we did address is something that looked like a pimple on the inner, lower lid of my left eye, which I thought was going to be a stye, but never matured. My left eye is chronically dry and irritated. On eval, he said it was a plugged Meibomian gland. Recommended warm packs, but because I am a retired ER nurse and understand how warm compresses work on such things, I didn't ask for the details. I expected that it would bust open eventually, but it hasn't. He didn't tell me about the massaging. THAT will change things a lot. I use Systane and have for several years. You wouldn't think there would be much difference between eye drops, name brand or generic with the same ingredients, but there is. I've found it to be the best. I've not tried the one you suggest though, and I think I will. You call it affordable, but that's relative. At most pharmacies, it's over $15 a bottle. You can get a generic version for much less ... but I've not found (yet) a generic version of the drops you suggest. I have Systane gel, as well as a version of lacrilube (my husband's because he has a tendency to sleep with his eyes slightly open), but those aren't practical for mid-day use unless you have an hour or so that you don't have to do anything. Leaves a film that, although gloriously comfortable, renders good vision moot until it disperses. Have you made a video about punct dilation? Genetically, I have very small ones, as does my sister. Is there some way to keep them clear and working without them having to be dilated? Hasn't been a problem until we were just over 40.
@Priyan0000 they just get bit sore, red and irritated. Like when your really tired. I have found these Optimel Manuka honey drops have worked best for me. Recommended by my Optomitrist. Don't rub your eyes. Can contribute to developing Kerrataconus.
I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT U TOOK ALL THIS TIME TO HELP ALL OF US!In your other video with the timing and temps of the compress and you actually testing it out-I am amazed at your dedication!IT HAS BEEN APPRECIATED AND ALL INFO WILL NOW BE USED!I have been so lost about how long and how warm to do the compresses and now I have a starting point.Massage simple and easy!I came off of restasis today as it made it much worse.Going to use my systane preservative free in the special bottle!THANKU SOOOO MUCH .I am going to report back you are a good caring person and what EVERY DR should be!From ellen
Ok I would like to report to everyone and the doctor that I received my aroma season eye warming device. I started using it on the next to the highest setting which they do not give you the temperature for. I’m gonna have to call the company to find out that warm but not too hot 10 minutes. I used it three days in a row once a day. The reason I did 10 minutes was because I wanted to see if using it for less time would give me a result. Well, it certainly did.! it’s been a week since then and I’m not using it and my eyes are perfect ! No running , no redness, no discomfort. I’m waiting to see how long I can go without repeating the heating and massage. So it took less time for me to be able to heal my eye for now because as we know dry eye can come and go. very happy and could not get this help for two years from my own eye doctor or anyone else that was in the practice thank goodness for people who take the time to put their knowledge out for the rest of us.!!! I will report back to let people know if it comes back but now I know if it does that I have a protocol to follow that’s effective and fast thank you again!!!
I want to add to this list of drops. AT THIS TIME, been on cequa rx. Drops 2x’s a day, Tyrvaya nasal spray rx 2x day, Optase OTC drops and lid cleanses PRN, I have tried almost all of them it seems. Optase has been best OTC for me. Definitely PF. Stay away from preservatives and especially BAK. Read labels. I personally can’t use retinol, very limited skincare and no makeup on eye’s especially. At my age I need something. Because of all of this craziness, my self esteem is on the ground. Watch all eye clinics. Now most are including aesthetics in their practices. Very costly. Be mindful of EVERYTHING you use on your face. In my case, it hurts in every way. Education is key and you have to be your own advocate for your self. I’m finding this in all areas of medicine.
Today was my first day watching your videos. I looked at other peeps, and when you said you're not a paid spokesperson, I subscribed to your channel. I do have a question (hopefully you'll reply.) Do daily wear contacts cause dry eyes? I've worn contacts for years with no issues until dryness recently.
THANK YOU, Dr. Chua! I am completely overwhelmed by trying to decide what drops, regimen, etc. is right for me. I feel like I've tried EVERYTHING. My opthalmologist seems a bit dismissive (" It's one of those, 'my eyes are getting older' things"). I'm 72, but, it affects the quality of my life; so much discomfort. I wore contacts for many years and had cataract surgery six years ago. I will watch this entire video..thank you SO MUCH for this and for your caring, compassionate manner. So comforting. Rosemarie 💖🙏🏻
I just ordered the iTear device. My eye doctor wrote an Rx for me. It’s arriving in a couple of days and I pray it will work for me. It increases tear production by stimulating a nerve for 30 seconds (on each side of the nose) twice a day.
I am nearly 73 and responded to this video earlier - very informative. In May 2O23, I began to use Systane Complete PF 2x a day and haven't had dry eyes since. I had cataract surgery in 2021 and have had dry eyes since. Do try Systane Complete PF - fantastic product!
My doctor recommended a microwave heat mask with the heavy beads to do each morning and night + tea tree oil wipes. So far so good. I’m going to get the drops this doctor recommends in this video as well.
I had dry eyes for years spent a fortune on eye drops. Now I am using organic castor oil every night put a few drops on my eyelids and after a few weeks my dry eyes are gone! Try it it works (also my short eyelashes are longer now). Doctors won’t tell you this!!!
Stop washing your eyes and face with tap water. I kept having and eye infection and eyes so dry I was using drops 4 to 6 times a day. It dawned on me one morning to NOT use tap water to wash my eyes and face. I bought distilled water and began washing my eyes and face morning and night. In just two days my eyes were greatly improved. I also noticed the skin on my face was greatly improved, no longer dry. I don't need eye drops a more. Sometimes the solution is simple!
Yes. what my eye doc suggested and another one. Did systane,.worked. first time dry eyes, now used this bottle still have half.or.more.in bottle.went follow.up never mentioned my eyes dry. just, see you in 6 mos everything looks good. Give it a try
The only thing I don't understand is how does the solution form the three layers over the eye if it has been mixed? I assume they also use some emulsifier to make the oil and water mix, so it's difficult for me to visualise the mechanics of action. But finally, Systane Complete is available to buy in the UK, and I started using it. Hopefully, it will bring some relief!
Thank you! I can’t wait to get these drops I was just diagnosed with Chronic Dry Eyes +1 in my right eye and the other eye is dry as well. I’m tire of red, watery, burning and slightly itchy eyes everyday. Thank you so much! I will give am update once I get the drops and a week or two goes by from using them 😊
New subby here. Thx doctor. Been suffering for a few months now with dry right eye. Will try the systane pf. Been using refresh recommended by a pharmacist for the last 2 weeks it helps but then the dryness came back especially early in the morning about 3am . Man it hurts..like if my cornea got slice with a razor blade
If you also get dry mouth, you may have Sjögren’s syndrome. In that case, you need Pilocarpine (a very small pill) 2-3 times a day. I also use Systane and a humidifier as needed.
As a teenager with dry eyes, it’s so annoying waking up with a red eye. It’s super dry and I’ve tried many different drops. I’m also on omega 3s and use a humidifier but it’s still there.
How old are you? I've been experiencing dry eyes for about 2 years now since 2022 i don't know if it's because of the covid vaccine or prolonged screen time
My eyes are very sensitive. When I tried the Systane drops recommended here I had an a painful reaction. You might as well have thrown sand into my eyes, it hurt so much! It took most of the rest of the day for my eyes to feel back to “normal.” I have found Refresh Relieva PF to be the best drops. I have used the non-PF version as well, and while they are ok, the PF ones feel more soothing.
I recently had cataracts removed my eyes and the doctor recommended substance. I used it for about two weeks. Every time I put the drops in it burned my eyes. I then tried hydrasense and these drops work beautifully and I don’t have to use as often.
I had dry eye syndrome for 3 years. I could not sleep any longer as my eyelids would be attached to my eyes. ALL that will help is to drink water with a ph of 7 every day, and cut out coffee and tea except Rooibos Tea is ok. My problem was solved within 3 days
@@Priyan0000 my symptoms are totally gone. Try and find bottled water with a ph of 7, it will be written on the bottle. Drink two or more glasses per day. Dont spend too much time in front of a tv or computer screen, this can also contribute to dry eyes. Cut out all other drinks, especially coffee. You may drink rooibos tea if you can buy it in your country.
So glad I stumbled upon this video and your page. I was aware of some of the items you talked and appreciate being educated on the items I was unaware of. Looking forward to being better informed from your videos!! 🎉✨️🙏🏾

Dr. Chua: Great information. One question: Does an eye drop container gets contaminated or its content affected adversely if it goes through the X-Ray machine in the airport?
I was prescribed Systane drops, but that was when the eye drops recalls happened. Was too scared to get, got theratears, i have severe medical trauma with eye drops, and found even with the fingertip applicator or “Aimer” it was nearly impossible and incredibly stressful. Anything coming near my eyes makes me scared and flinch. Last time an eye doctor wanted to do eye drops on me, I was lightly crying in anticipation and was told it wasn’t worth it to do them. I’m not sure how to get over it. I would like to be free of dry eyes but being held down and have burning eye drops put in me as a child has really messed up my body and minds relationship with such. Even those eye plugs look alluring, but they don’t knock you out for the procedure, and I don’t want sharp tools near my eyes
I have permanent dry eye from lasik nerve damage, the past year the vision in only one eye has become super blurry because of dryness, desperate to get the vision back
Thank you so much for this video. May god bless you. I tried to find some information on RUclips regarding dry eye drops but it's overwhelming lists of products and confusing unnecessary information. You explained so well, I am glad I found this video.
When looking at drugstore products I go for the big names in pharma. No cheaper off shore brands . I've used those disposable drops and they're fine. Now I'm using blink and its fine too. I've used systane and its good too. I'm pretty sure that if I pay attention to drinking enough water every day, I dont notice dry eyes so much. Maybe its connected, I dont know. One thing I do not want to do is use anything made in India. I read a book about generic drugs, many, maybe most made in India. A German tv producer went to the neighborhood where these generic manuf were and the water near those buildings was filthy.
I lost my beloved brother ,I’m older than him,but in his funeral,I cried so much , That I think all my tears have disappeared ,even I have lost another 2 sister of mine, but I’m being so much cry i could not see one tear of my eyes, when I wake up I’m must try to open with my hands ,please I’m not in USA I’m in Iceland 🇮🇸😭
THANK YOU your information has helped so much...few years ago..I had bacteria or virus in eye...got rid of that but I was left with dry eye on and off....I watched your video...asap ordered Systane...WOW works so well...THANK YOU again back to clear vision blocks away tho I am 74 years old
I too suffer from the same form of blepharitis as you and it sucks. But I genuinely it will be cure for this stuff soon. Wonder if we can get to the root cause of the blepharitis, can there possibly be a cure?
@@khriskali1321 I do hope they can cure it! My brother and aunt have as well. That is very interesting to me. Finding the root cause root cause would be great. I would really like to know.
The 5 heat setting aroma season device I just looked up on Amazon said it goes from 104 to 140F so for that one you might want to use setting 2 or 3 for 20 minutes I am guessing and not the high setting.
Wait, if oil and water don't mix (09:26), how come Systane Complete PF could contain mineral oil (09:46) and water (10:02) in the same bottle. How does it work? Should we shake before each use?🤔
I dislike the newer bottles. They require a lot of pressure and then too much comes out and I end up blowing through the product quickly. But I also dislike the single-use containers because they're so wasteful. What to do.
@@HaydenMint Yes! I do use eye drops occasionally because I live in a very dry climate. Not suffering like I was. Just took my cod liver oil a few minutes ago.
I have severe dry eyes. I use serum tears, wake up about 7 times at night cause I feel my eyes very dry. I also use tracolimus and did jet plasma. The problem is that I got meibomian gland atrophy after my lasik surgery… it destroyed my life.
I was facing bad dry eye issue due to sitting long hours on computer. I was confused between systane ultra and systane complete. So I bought both and tried one in each eye at the same time. Systane complete solved my problem but ultra has no effect. Also, complete is newer 2018 formula.
Thank you for this video. I have finally got tear plugs which really helps and I use less eye drops.I do like Systane drops. But during this time of year my allergies are extreme and I have red eyes. I had to go to a round of Prednisone drops for a short time.
May I ask whether you got them on the bottom or the top? I got the tear plugs on the bottom and it felt very helpful for about three days. It still has helped a little bit, but I would much prefer a stronger effect and I’ve heard that the upper ones actually block more tear evaporation. Sidenote - part of the reason for the exacerbation of my dry discomfort is because I work in an office with space heaters, which blast out hot air instead of a more central or radiator type heater. I can’t really change that, but I would love to know more about whether upper tear duct plugging is more helpful than lower.
@@bestiefswlady5251 I got them on the bottom. I have had much improvement but still need eye drops by 6:30pm. During the allergy season, I have a lot of problems.

Thank you very much, Dr.! I suffered with my dry eyes by almost 3 months. I'll do for my eyes and I'll let you know about it. Thanks again.
15:50 I live in asia where humidity is 70%-80% on average. Got that 40% covered no problem
Many, many thanks to you, Dr Chua! I followed your video, I applied your guidelines and my dry eyes syndrome is much better now. I'm from Europe and I appreciate it as being better medical advice than in my country even from an oftalmologie hospital.
My syndrome was very severe, it took a few months
to be better.
I had severe dry eye and by the 3rd dose I took vit A works like a Gem
Ihave Glaucoma and Dry Eyes . My Eye Clinic Consultant prescri ed these and they are amazing !!
What are the treatments ?
@@docfaustus6303 oops !! Silly me 😂
Systane Balance Dry Eye Symptom Relief 10 ml in a small white plastic bottle with deep purple label . ( There are different Systane ones with other coloured labels )
Also have had prescribed : Hylo - Forte 0.2% ( intense lubrication )
Both are preservative and phosphate free .
The Hylo-Forte are in a bigger bottle and last longer and easier to apply .Both can be bought on Amazon or from most high street chemists but mine are on repeat prescription from the glaucoma clinic that I attend every 2 months . Hope they'll hep you 🙂
I will try to use systane. Hope it is useful it will cure my dry eyes. Thanks Dr.
Great tips Michael, and what I like that you give affordable very clear advise which is like a breath of fresh air
I don't have this problem when I visit my mom in Florida which is very high humidity.
do you get any reflex tears in dry eyes? Like while crying or cutting onion?
@medhikasingh6327 Hi. I'm not sure what you mean, but I do have tears when I cry and sometimes when chopping onions. I have Sjogrens disease - one of the symptoms is dry eyes/dry mouth.
This is the best dry-eye video I've seen. thanks.
THANK YOU DOCTOR 💓
I have dry eyes, along with glucoma, best treatment i find that works for me is the warm compresses, i use make up remover pads and warm water place them on eyes often as I feel nesscary, cheap and effective
Same here did it work

do you get any reflex tears in dry eyes? Like while crying or cutting onion?
Systane didn't help me at all. But I found out it was air conditioning in my house that was my problem. On days when I can do
without airconditioning and can open the windows I'm not bothered so much with dry eye. The AC was drying out my
eyes drastically.
I have dry eye/blepheritis and I use Optimel manuka honey eye drops. Have worked very well for me. 😊

After watching this video I went to buy Systane Complete eyedrops. My eyes feel so refreshed and rested. Also used warm compress. Thank you, Dr Chua.
This is great info. Systane eye drops and humidifer have helped my eyes. I have allergies do sometimes I use the allergy drops.

Thank yo Dr Michael for this video I going tomorrow and get some of these drops. Thank you sir !!!!!!!

I have used Systane PF for over a year since having cataract surgery! I wouldn't use anything else!

Dr. Chua: Great information. One question: Does an eye drop container gets contaminated or its content affected adversely if it goes through the X-Ray machine in the airport?
Thank you very much.
Can you provide links to the products recommended?

I think I’m going to just buy the drops and things and try again.
I have and have used the closed eye method! Haven’t noticed a difference yet but I’ve only had 2 rounds of one drop each
I have permanent dry eye from lasik nerve damage, the past year the vision in only one eye has become super blurry because of dryness, desperate to get the vision back
