Dr. Michael, that was one of the best presentations I've ever seen on medical issues of any kind! You not only explained everything in great detail.... but you explained it in a way that we can easily understand it.
I may be needing cataract surgery in the near future. Now I know what to expect, and the choices in what to ask for. Thank you for being so dedicated to good eye care!

You answered many of the simple questions that I was going to ask my doctor. I have more to ask him, but you were very helpful. Thank you.

I had my surgery a week ago today in Toronto . . . I am 79 years old and both eyes were done during the same appointment . . . I chose the lens provided under our government health plan . . . arrived at the clinic at 7 am . . . registered in and then taken to the area where a basic pre-op was performed . . . the anesthesiologist saw that I was quite nervous about the whole thing as he ask "is there anything you would like to share with me" the surgery began at 8 am . . . a short period of time later I was back in the pre-op area where I was offered a cold drink and cookie and told that as soon as my ride home appeared I was could go home . . . I left the clinic around 9:45 and took it easy for the rest of the day . . . at no time have I experienced any pain . . . at times there is some discomfort with a feeling like there is some dust or something in the eye and that seems to be diminishing as time passes . . . the following day, using our public transportation system, I travelled to the hospital on the streetcar for the day after appt with the eye surgeon who shared he was very happy with the surgery and would see me in another week . . . that appt is tomorrow . . . I do not have words to express the changes in my vision that now has given me permission to re-think how I wish to spend the rest of my time on this planet . . two years ago when I saw the doctor for the first time he told me my eyes were not ready yet for surgery . . . it has been a long wait . . . please, please, if your doctor suggests you would benefit from cataract surgery, go for it . . . GO FOR IT . . .

Hello, is Cataract surgery covered by OHIP? Because my opthometrist said, it’s not covered. I’m confused

    • @Retinarecovery
      @Retinarecovery 9 месяцев назад +3

It depends on who is doing your surgery in Ontario. Some private clinics will charge you upwards to $3-5k.
I had surgeries in the Hamilton, Ontario area for both eyes. I paid for laser measurement ($200-250) and an upgrade on each lenses of $70 (in 2015 and 2017).
You are extremely wise to be asking the question. ~ Steve

    • @earthman0x
      @earthman0x 9 месяцев назад +1

Hi Steve! Thank you for your response. I called my Opthometrist to clarify. He said that my case is not clinically significant yet, that is why it’s not yet covered. I think when the cataract is visibly seen then it’s covered. It’s a shame because it affects my vision and my day to day life.

I spoke with my admin who used to work in an optometrist clinic. She recommended that you get a second opinion from another optometrist who will be sympathetic to your needs. The fact that your quality of vision is causing issues should be enough to please let me know how it goes. All the best as you look at a new year ahead. ~ Steve

    Namaste
    Some facts about cataract
Cataract surgery can be performed in any season. The associated myth that rainy season should be avoided can be ignored as advance cataract removal technology and medication is available.
We should have cataract removed whenever it starts affecting our daily life and we need not wait for it to mature as that can cause complications.
Eye drops cannot dissolve cataract and surgery is the only effective method.
Cataract is a day care procedure with fast recovery
Cataract surgery can be safely performed even in hypertensive and diabetic patients.
    Thanks

Awesome! My mom just had her left eye yesterday and her right eye in 2 weeks. Already she can't believe how much better things are. She can see color better too. I'm so glad I finally talked her into getting it. She has Dementia and I had to tell her now is the time, because later on it would only make it more difficult for me (her caregiver) to get her through it. She's so wonderful.

This is an excellent video explaining the ins and outs of what cataracts are, treatment options, what to expect for a procedure etc…I am day 1 post op, cataract removal and implantation of an IOL. I was putting off having the operation for as long as I could, as the affected eye is amblyopic, and very myopic - I just didn’t think I would gain that much from it, however I am already wowed by the results. I am from London, so had my procedure carried out by our NHS. The only thing that was probably non-standard with my op is that they did it under general anaesthetic, because they knew I would be fretful if I had been awake during the op. I would recommend the procedure to anyone who may require it, or be considering it. It is amazing what ophthalmology surgery can do now!!

Are these tests enough for pre op measurement ? I am thinking to have multi focal lenses such PanOptic lenses, It worries me that the measurement will not be correct ?

I had the newest and greatest lens (PanOptix) inserted I could see a little better as far as long distance but my close up reading was impossible. I couldn't get my eyes to focus to even read the newspaper or see the wording on my computer at work.
My night time driving with oncoming headlights was much worst than before surgery. Every headlight was a prism of starbursts.
I took the drops I was given faithfully but my vision is still blurred.
I went back to my regular eye doctor and he gave me some Refresh Digital drops.
    Now, I am really worried...
Would you have any idea why I am having this problem?
    Thank you for any reassurance.

I had my cataract removed three days ago and I wish I’d had it sooner distance vision is amazing and colours are wonderful I had dry eyes prior to surgery the only problem I have had is with my prescription varifocal and the new lens is vying with my glasses and I’ve had vertigo after talking with clinic they suggested taking the lens from glasses without cataract leaving the lens in the side with the cataract hopefully that will be done in a few weeks and I will see if I need glasses. I had everything explained regarding surgery but it was not mentioned about my prescription glasses I did try some old pairs on that didn’t work for me I am being very careful protecting eye from infection. More is known now, & I'm older than you, but it makes me wonder if the floaters were a hint that cataracts were forming. Just wish I'd known earlier, but advancements are such that maybe it's a blessing in disguise that it took so many years to find out what was blinding me! 💙😂

I've owned an optometrist practice since 2004, and I every time I hear a patient ask, "When is the ophthalmologist going to take out my cataract?" After our OD's find evidence of Posterior subcapsular cataract, Cortical, age related etc, cataracts, I laugh a little inside my head.
I've had some patients wait 4 or 5 years until their cataract is "ripe" enough to take out.
One day, I'm going to call the cataract specialists we refer patients to and ask them to tell the patients exactly why. For some reason, they never say why, just when so patients at our practice that keep coming back are always like, "Why aren't they taking out my cataract?! I can't drive at night and can barely read!" And I'm always saying "Every cataract is different, you'll have to speak with your ophthalmologist."
Then they'll be like "All he said it wasn't ready to take out, and that was 2 years ago!!!"
    Me: 😬

My cataracts got to the point that depth of focus was so bad I fell down not once, but twice because I missed a step on a staircase. Also, could not read ANYTHING. If my eye doctor told me to 'wait', I would have a fit. But, I understand your point. However, your patients may think you are just stringing them along. Anyway, take care and best wishes to you and your practice.

@@davidchicas7385 Thanks for your concern! My surgery went well and as of the very first day post surgery when the bandage wasremoved I was seeing clearly! I followed the doctor’s instructions with respect to administering the three eye drops and had very little inflammation or pain in my eye. It has been approximately 5 1/2 weeks and I am still seeing well. Only challenge is that my left eye surgery is carded some 8 months …in Feb/Mar’24, so there is a vast difference in using both eyes. The closest I can explain with the difference of sight is that the operated eye vision is like seeing with a 100 watt bulb and the left eye is like with a 70 watt bulb. My depth perception is also skewed. Once again thanks for your support.

I have to be honest in that I very rarely comment on anything that I see here on RUclips but, having my had cataract eye surgery (the right eye a week ago and the left eyes just yesterday) I would just like to assure anyone who's considering doing this NOT to be extra nervous (as I was) because, being totally honest, I was not aware of any pain and, in both of the "procedures", I was totally awake and was, in fact, having a conversation with the surgeon during both ops!!!!
I actually live in the UK and was operated in the Optegra hospital (maybe more correct to call it an eye clinic????) here in London and, in my case, I already know that I no longer will need glasses which I have worn for the last 30 years (I worked in the IT world and was constantly looking at computer screens).
I am NOT sponsered by them in any way and cannot comment on how they compare with respect to their prices (although I have always thought that "cheaper" normally works out "more expensive" in the long run) and, personally, I would NOT consider ever "going abroad" for this procedure either.
I LOVED this video and have to thank Michael Chua for having spent the time creating what, for me, has been one of the very best videos on this subject!!!
Thank you so much Michael - great great great video!!!!!

I just had both my cataracts removed-the first surgery was 2 1/2 weeks ago, and the second surgery was 3 days ago. My vision change was almost immediate! I had an astigmatism in the 1st eye. The 2nd eye did not need the astigmatism lens. The only thing I remember in surgery was a bright light. I am 72 years old. I needed no Tylenol for pain.I would recommend this surgery to everyone who needs it. I was not apprehensive at all. I have worn glasses since I was 11 years old. It is so nice not to wear glasses to watch television anymore. I will use a [air of readers from Dollar Tree( recommended by eye staff) for only $1.25 if I am reading or doing crafts for long periods.

Hello Dr Michael, I had both my eyes operated for cataract with B & L, EDOF lenses.
Being myopic with -8/-8 eyesight I had barrage laser for my right eye for a horse shoe tear and left eye for a lattice one week before the operation. The cataract operation was successful, but till now after 4 weeks my vision is still blurred and I cannot see clearly beyond 3 metres, reading vision is good. I appreciate the full walk through you gave. I'm 68 and just got told I have significant cataracts. That was a surprise to me. I just thought I needed new glasses. Thank you for telling me the pros and cons. I'm still very nervous, but you didn't mention any patients not surviving, so I will go to my pre-op appointment. What happens if I can't hold my eye still. My eyes tend to follow the floaters, and before I know it, I'm looking at the bottom of a page, TV screen, or phone screen.

Risk of retina detachment after cataract surgery is in the list of complications they have you sign off on. It happened to me in both eyes. Don't blindly think this won't happen. Doesn't seem rare at all to me and retina reattachment surgery is brutally painful.

My 1st eye gets done in 4 days. I'm a bit worried, too. Did you already have any natural or partial detachment before the procedures? I read that that's the biggest concern/risk for detachment post-surgery. Hope you're better now, friend. Sorry you went through that! 💙🤗from Alabama

Very well said and thorough. Everyone shpuld understand that the entire procedure is frightening and with some pain. Having experienced cataract removal in one eye, I decided not to do the other. I also fetl that anyone electing lens replacement have enough significant vision issues to make it worth performing. It takes long for your eye to set to rights, and any number of issues can arise. Too many RUclips videos seem to be designed to promote the surgery and downplay the issues from multiple clinic and doctor visits. These are designed both to protect the patient and reduce clinic liability. In my recommendation go for the surgery if you have rather difficult vision caused by cataracts. Do not do it, if you can avoid it or correct your vision problems with eyeglasses. Invading the eye for any surgical procedure should always be very carefully decided.

I have many friends who have had cataracts removed. Most say it is an easy, painless procedure and their results were good. My older brother had both eyes done, and one eye had a retinal tear (when younger he had a detached retina in that eye). After 6 months, he is completely fine. Another lady had problems with dry eyes for 4 months and is now fine. I will be having my first cataract removed in two weeks. I will have the standard monofocal lens and will wear progressive glasses afterwards. I like wearing glasses all the time, rather than having to have one ready for close reading.

    • @puertocool
      @puertocool Год назад +3

@@judithdasta3969 Not exactly my experience. In spite of an anesthiologist present there was trauma and pain. Apart from a 'bluer' light, there was no improvement in vision. The worst thing is the drooping eyelid I acquired (they don't tell you about that) as well as my eyes not coordinating as well as before. I will never do the other eye. Too much a risk. I once had an opthamologist who told me never touch an eye with any surgery unless absolutely necessary. I should have listened. Yes, many come out fine, but not all. Oh yes, dry eye is now more of a problem.

Thank you Dr. Chua for your video. Everything you stated in your video is so very true. I just had my right eye done 2 days ago and your video re-forced some of the questions that was on my mind and also reiterated what I have already come to experience and know! Like you said in your video, Everyone is different. I for one did not, nor have I experienced any kind of pain to deter me from getting my other eye done next week. For the 1st 2 days the most I have experienced is the sensitivity to the sun light. I am very sensitive to the sun light to start with. Therefore in order to make it more comfortable for me, I wear my sunglasses, at all times, even in the house. I have notice that today the sensitivity to the sun has gotten better. I have not doubt that by tomorrow I won't need to wear my sun glasses inside as much. There is NOTHING to be afraid of. As long as you follow the instructions you are given to the "T", Take it easy as they suggest all should turn out well. Use eye drops as directed, sleep with the shield over your eye at night, rest a lot and anything else the Doctor suggests for you to do. Also make sure that your doctor does a lot of Cataract Surgeries , therefore knows what he is doing! If you are on the fence, talk to people, talk with your doctor, ask a lot of questions in order to get over your fears.. Even watch video's of the operation being done! Whatever it takes, for you only have ONE set of eye's..... ; ))

I’m glad you highlighted the importance of following your Surgeon’s protocol to a T as well as the eye drop regimen.
I want to also recommend that anyone having cataract surgery post vitrectomy that you might want to take a little more time than prescribed before going back to regular life.
For me, I felt pressure in my eye 14 days post surgery when lifting 50-60 pounds of our rental equipment. This scared me enough to extend my no lifting time to 21 days.
No regrets in having done this! Success! ~ Steve

I have two questions I’ve never seen discussed by anyone:
    1. Eye really need glasses to see out of both eyes. After surgery I will have one eye close to normal and one still can’t see normal. How is my vision afterwards, in that how do I see when one eye is normal and the other is not normal. If I wear my glasses for my poor eyesight, I won’t be able to see out of the new eye. If I don’t wear glasses I will see out of the new eye, but the old eye will be blurry. How do you address this issue? Take one lens out of the glasses?
    2. I drive a motorcycle. Even with a closed helmet with form fitting glasses I feel a stiff breeze on my eyes. Do I have to give up my transportation for awhile? If so, for how long?
I really like the explanation of everything.

I was just recently diagnosed with "severe cataracts" on both eyes at my annual eyeglass exam. NEVER been told this in my life. I have NONE of these symptoms. NONE. I doubted the diagnosis. I had two subsequent exams in the following weeks by independent eye doctors (one being the eye surgeon I was referred to) and BOTH told me I did not have any cataracts. WTH?? Why would an eye doctor tell me that??

I had cataract surgery about 4 years ago and my vision is worse now than it was before the surgery. Before the surgery I was looking at everything through a fog. After my surgery I see everything in triple vision, and I'm almost totally blind when the sun is shining or there is more glare than usual (high UV levels, glare off snow, glare from rainy pavement, etc.). I'm almost totally unable to drive now because I had cataract surgery and when I have my eye exam I'm told I have nearly 20/20 vision but I still can't see. It's very frustrating!!!
