As a South African, I feel incredibly sorry for Owen Farrell. The success he's had is IMMENSE !!!!. He is one of England's very best of all time. I don't think the (critical) English fans and press know what an amazing player and person he is. Get well Owen. World Rugby (and England) needs you.

I’m sorry. I find Andy Goode very hypocritical. Apart from this particular episode of the Pod, every time and I mean EVERY time he mentions Owen, or George Ford or Steve Borthwick for that matter, out comes the faux, cliched ‘northern’ accent, painting them as dull, slow-witted northerners. Which as a northerner myself always winds me up. Just bants? Being too sensitive? Or feeding into the same negative narrative? What is and what is not abuse? And I also remember a few years back when he gave a scathing commentary about the Ford family in general (well George and his father Mike) that had absolutely nothing to do with rugby. Look inwards, Andy Goode.

I completely agree. Dave Attwood was interviewed on a different podcast and said he and Farrell don't get on. When asked why he said it's because he called Farrell a peasant. Apparently it's all "bantz".

Jim and Goodey are midlanders - even worse! And actually, the weight loss has done Goodey’s face no favours .. he looks odd. But I’m sure the ticker will be thank you.
He holds grudges evidently too. Mike Ford is a known lier and not well liked at most places, but that’s not to slight George. I know Mike lied directly to Andy’s face in a contract negotiation - he talks about it on an old pod. And Sam Burgess too, the Ford’s are a whole chapter. Mike is the real issue though.

When Mark McCall refers to media he refers to you guys too. Like other major media outlets, you'll point Farrell out as a great player every so often but the conversation is always about him being replaced by the shiny new thing or exaggerating a negative moment around his game e.g. tackling. Yes, Farrell has made some bad tackles (Dan Biggar has actually made more high tackles over his career than Farrell), but so has so many other players but the spotlight is always shone on him for negative attention which casual fans pick up on. If Farrell was any other nationality he'd be lauded by the nation he plays for but English Media has a tendancy to big players up and then find a reason to flip the narrative which leads to other media outlets jumping on top of it for attention. I'm not saying he's prone to criticism as he'd admit he's made errors but the amount of hate he gets is pushed by the media and jumped on by social media. Before anyone says it's his "attitude" or "how he talks to referres", he's no worse than a lot of other players.
And Goodey saying "he's starting to make an effort to sign autographs etc" he's been doing that for years. Just because he's not doing corporate gigs doesn't mean he's not making time for fans. I've met him a few times and he's been a delight and made time for opposition fans too.

But also a lot of the negativity around the team stems from Jones and his selections and game style. Not excusing the booing but it started under Jones when the fans got fed up with terrible rugby. It's not fair on Farrell but people associate his selection with kicking the leather off the ball. People seem to forget that he took England from a pool exit in 2015 to a World Cup final with some of the most intelligent playing.
The truth is that the hammering they got from SA in 2019 final is something the team never recovered from until this year's semi where they showed real bravery, and if we're really honest with ourselves - how many truly world class players have stepped up for England these past 4 years?
It has been an endless parade of poor form. No coach would have been able to recover that - Eddie should either have left in 2019 or been there until after this world cup.
On top of all this I really think the RFU is mismanaging the sport, I don't see any evidence of the game being grown - the local clubs are doing what they can, but where are the school clinics, where is the marketing to more underpriviliged areas? We are sitting on a goldmine of talent but we are squandering it.

I think it was a hangover from that ill feeling that led to the Farrell boos, which was very unfair.
Fans want England to run the ball, so a kicking 10 and wings that chase kicks like May were unpopular, especially after the Argentina result where Ford excelled (ironically by kicking every ball he got!)

I think you are wrong when you say he brought some of it on himself. Whatever his tackles were, nobody deserves abuse for it and you say some of the critique has to be expected but the critical judgement of his incidents from within Rugby and the media has been abusive. A lot of old school Rugby players critique him and yet they would never have lived with the current rules.
Rugby is becoming almost unplayable and important games are being decided on mis-timed tackles and I see identical tackles refereed incositently.
    Owen for me is:
    - A leader

It’s a shame in a way that because Owen is such a beast, fierce competitor and leader in a squad, very few are considered leaders ahead of him to captain on the pitch.
Great man and player that he is (I would say that as a Sarries fan!), he is not an on field international Rugby Captain by any stretch of imagination for the modern game where you need to have 2 additional key skills:
    (1) Know the forward play inside out ie scrum, lineout, maul, ruck etc
    (2) Have the diplomacy/charisma to charm/win over the ref throughout the match.
If he was not Captain, a lot of the unjustifiable stick he gets would probably not have surfaced because the microscope would have been less intense (bad tackles aside which would have been less of an issue without the additional criticism)…. It feels like something has not been right in recent rugby months for Faz with the uncharacteristically poor conversion/penalty form compared to previous years…
On the plus side, this could be a win-win all-round with more important family time for Faz and his family and a perfect time to hand over the baton to Marcus Smith who should be given the freedom to play his way…and for England to build a team around him and Mitchell…
Thanks for the great England achievements Faz and the memories - your country salutes you….
Good luck Marcus - your time has come!!

Agreed 100% fellas, this is a societal problem. Social media allows alarming toxicity, it is a safe harbour for those to spew their bile under a cloak of anonymity. Such people have empty lives, gutless nobodies without moral fibre, emboldened by a keyboard - people of no consequence whatsoever. It's a societal problem that society needs to deal with - the abusers must be exposed for the deviants that they are - a dose of limelight publicity would make them very tongue-tied instantly.

Perhaps I just can't believe that England fans would boo their own players at the start of a match, but I believe that when England played Fiji it was the French fans who were booing, not England fans... There was booing of other significant players from other teams when they were announced... French fans were dominating in almost every match, and were chanting for their team even when they were not playing (which was disrespectful in my opinion, in itself). Perhaps some England fans who were actually at the match can say something about who was booing.

This all started with that Esterhuizen tackle. He should have penalised for it but wasn’t and as a result, South Africa were denied the opportunity to win the game. Ever since then every transgression of his big or small, real or imaginary, has been put under the microscope and very often blown out of proportion.
Does he need to work on his tackling? Perhaps. He does seem to make illegal tackles SLIGHTLY more frequently than the average player. He still makes scores, if not hundreds, of perfectly legal ones in between time. But the way people talk about him you’d think he was making multiple, deliberate head shots a game.
Either way, the reaction to him is ridiculously over the top. Just demonstrates the irrational, reactionary nature of a lot of sports fans.

RUclips is the only social media I follow and mainly rugby channels like this, Eggchasers, Alfie reynolds etc. When people talk about abuse what do they mean? If people are bad mouthing his family or they want him to die, I agree that's unacceptable. If however, they are criticising his play or form on the pitch, suck it up. Pro sportsmen are among the luckiest people in the world, if they are happy to get cheered and clapped they also have to accept some criticism. In Farrells case he has repeatedly been picked when he's not the form player, especially at centre so when you talk about all his caps I just don't buy it- who's feeling sorry for George Ford on the bench or Henry Slade hardly getting a pass in 80 minutes?. At Saracens they broke the salary cap for 3 years, got penalised for one and were allowed to keep their Championships- feel sorry for Exeter. My biggest critiscism of whole England mangement is that they repeatedly sit down after poor performances and go on about "Green shoots, so much to be excited about, heading in the right direction but there's work to be done etc ", when it's obvioius that's just rubbish and I'm afraid OF sits there and agrees- if he said "that wasn't good enough" I'm respect him loads more

Think he’s a bit of a pantomime villain, he doesn’t help himself with his conduct on the pitch, off the pitch I’m sure he’s an ace father, son, friend, but on the pitch with the kind of limelight that shines on him, his arrogance, petty violence and general demeanour is not what I would like kids to emulate.
Ill caveat that with his desire is second to none, he’s a great player and an icon of his age but if he’d just walk away now and again and stop the deliberate desire to harm individuals on the pitch does him no favours.
Online bullying and abuse such as he’s receiving is unacceptable, he is a dad and has a duty to protect his family first. Maybe this is a cathartic moment for him and he’ll be even better all round when he comes back to international rugby.

Whether you like him or not, he has done so much for English rugby and no one warrants any type of abuse. Social media needs to take far more action on those that act in such abhorrent ways.

The problem isn’t his attitude as a player, his work ethic, his commitment or the amount of points he’s scored as a player.
The problem is that he does exactly what the coach tells him to do. He’s a robot. This can be good or bad. Also, his relationship with the younger players who want ball in hand Rugby hasn’t been great and I don’t think he understands how to motivate the likes of Smith and Arundell. Shouty agro bullying isn’t what’s required when dealing with self critical individuals who see the game differently. Also, he’s been following a very negative and ultimately floored game plan where we have Borthwick dictating how we should be playing rugby. If Arundell spends 67 mins without being passed the ball then it’s a major problem.

I would be the first to admit that Owen's passion for the game can sometimes get the better of him, does this make him the justified target of a bunch of cowards hiding behind a keyboard? A friendly marler esque arm around the shoulder and the occasional few words of reason when faz is about to have a row with the referee is all that is needed. The wisdom to have an inner voice that says 'walk away from this one lad' and then do what you do best and let your boots do the talking.. it will come and it will be the making of him. And this is nothing I wouldn't say to his face over a few beers in a rugby club... Unlike the hoards of internet warriors who enjoy nothing more than ripping someone apart because they have actually achieved something. Rugby players are pretty thick skinned in general, but who knows what goes on inside an individual's head? In the reality television world, celebrities and would bes have taken their own lives as a result of online abuse from cowards who would never put their heads above their keyboards... How much will it take, how many individuals and families destroyed, careers ended and ultimately, lives lost before their time before we say no more to people hiding behind Instagram and Twitter etc and hurling vile abuse to amuse themselves themselves?
