      What are you on about? British press /general public aren’t the ones relentlessly piling on him. It’s been Southern Hemisphere fans - and mostly the Saffers. Just check any of the comments under a RUclips video about Owen Farrell. Started around the time he was accused of smirking at the Haka in NZ and then when Rassie did that melodramatic, staged training video for the press cameras about tackling as high as possible. The Bok Jesus spoke and all his flock faithfully obliged.
      Been the same with the Bok fans / World Rugby’s response to Tom Curry being racially abused on the pitch and it all being brushed under the carpet to keep the World Cup final clean and shiny. And then to mock a player who’d been racially abused by releasing another Rassie-approved video of them pretending it was just an Afrikaans expression about the ‘wrong side’. Curry should at least have been given a voice to say and officially record what happened …not just in the Semi-Final but also in the same fixture last year against SA. if it was white on black racism we’d be talking about it for 18 months and the white player would be hounded out of the game/society.

      @shonunezekiel 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@thomastimms88I might be wrong, but I feel that the online abuse of Farrell is a very different phenomenon from any class issues at the grassroots or issues around opportunities for progression for people from working backgrounds at the RFU... the reason I say this is that there are many more working class (if that is a thing) players in the England team than Farrell, but he is the one who cops all the abuse.
      eg rugby has got a racism problem (like the rest of society has) but the players from ethnic minority backgrounds in the England team do not get anywhere near as much (public) online abuse as Farrell.

    • @thomastimms88
      @thomastimms88 7 месяцев назад +2

      @shonunezekiel right, firstly you can't claim that many of the motivations to give Farrell abuse is not because he's working class as there are other working class players in the team who don't get abused. E.g. there are many racist people in society who wouldn't abuse an ethnic minority associated with them but would happily abuse other ethnic minorities. It doesn't stop them being racist. Likewise, just because Ford doesn't get as much abuse, doesn't mean the motivations to abuse Farrell aren't driven by class hatred.
      I certainly wouldn't rule Faz's class out of why he cops so much abuse. Sam Burgess suffered the same nonsense and he was the best defensive centre in the world by some stretch (im a Bath season ticket holder).
      Rugby has always had a class issue and a racism issue. Still rife to this day.

Look at any post or video that says Owen is England’s highest points scorer and I guarantee the top comments will be “He’s not as good as Jonny” “Jonny got his with less games” “Owen can’t hold a candle to Jonny”. i get everything said here but i don`t think he is playing in the right position and he needs to tackle correctly, as a forward or rugby league player he might get away with the lack of arms. its not about his commitment its about his "liabilties" giving away penalties in open play sorry but as a former player he would p!ss the hell out of me in a game

  • @aramanon

    It is damn awful because noone can doubt he is epic for Sarries and every challenge he faces for his club is annihalated. It is toxic hatred and it is certainly classist and too easy for people who havent picked up boots since school and only reads the Express and the twit feed. It all coagulated around five years ago didnt it, from grumbles to fans thinking there's a unwritten permission to capital H Hate him with prejudice. Maybe a little bit the Sarries machine, a little bit Salary Cap, a little bit of rub-off from Eddie Jones and Dylan Hartleys anti-press captain run, a little bit high tackles (his technique can be frantic and too keen to avoid being run over) and a lot that he doesn't get the highlights, he calls the plays and hands it straight off so people who only watch six nations don't get what he is good at.

    Nothing to do with background because half the people having a go have no idea about his past and he gets shite from all over the world and in the southern hemisphere the class issue is the other way around.

    I think some criticism has been over the top but I also think supporters of Farrell have used the very small minority of hate to avoid the issue that Farrell is creating more problems than he’s solving in this current England team. Not to say he can’t put it right but so far it does look like Ford OR Farrell at 10 is the right option as tuilagi/Lawrence & Marchant is working better for us. Also, whoever misses out on the starting 10 position out of Ford or Farrell should be left out the 23 as smith & Lawrence have shown they can be a proper weapon for us off the bench.

    I've always thought of Farrell as a class player, in recent times, I still think he's class, but he is a grub when making one on one plays, like tackles. Anyone who hates or trolls any pro Rugby player needs a life. Arguably the nicest, classiest players of any sport.

      Rugby Union is seen as completely backwards by many in society and often rightly so. Rugby Union has a shocking history if you actually bothered to look into it.
