Exposing World Rugby's Corruption: The Owen Farrell Red Card Controversy

  • In the fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled world of international rugby, there are bound to be occasional missteps, accidental fouls, and honest mistakes on the field. But what happens when these inevitable instances become marred by inconsistent questionable decisions made off the pitch? In this video, we delve deep into the controversial reversal of Owen Farrell's red card and highlight the inconsistencies and contradictions within World Rugby's governing body.
The stage was set: England facing off against Wales, with both teams vying for victory. As tensions flared and the match progressed, a key event took the limelight - a dangerous tackle by England captain, Owen Farrell, on Taine Basham. Initially receiving a yellow card, Farrell's sanction was promptly upgraded to a red card following a review by the TMO bunker - a newly implemented system designed to ensure accurate decisions by isolating TMOs from on-field distractions.
The purpose of this new TMO bunker system is clear: to provide a space away from crowds and interference, allowing dedicated TMOs the chance to meticulously review incidents of foul play and determine if they merit a red card. Such decisions are not taken lightly, considering the potential impact on a player's career and team fortunes. Given this, the bunker's decision to upgrade Farrell's penalty to a red card after comprehensive review indicates the severity of the foul in their perspective.
But, in a shocking twist, the independent disciplinary committee reversed this decision days later. Despite the bunker's conclusion, the committee deemed that there was enough mitigation to revert the red card sanction back to a mere yellow. Their justification? A "late change in dynamics" due to Jamie George's involvement. But many are left wondering: if the TMO bunker system was introduced to ensure accurate decisions, how can it be so easily overturned?
Let's put things into perspective. Rugby is a sport beloved for its physicality and passion. But with that comes the responsibility of ensuring player safety. A high tackle, like the one executed by Farrell, poses significant risks to the players involved. Recognizing the importance of safety and fair play, World Rugby has implemented laws and guidelines, such as Law 9.13, which states, "A player must not tackle an opponent early, late, or dangerously." By this definition and the immediate evidence at hand, the TMO's decision to red card Farrell seemed appropriate.
But the inconsistencies don’t end here. Consider Lappies Labuschagne's case. For an accidental head clash, Labuschagne received a 3-week suspension, resulting in him losing his cherished place in the World Cup. In stark contrast, Farrell's more dangerous tackle sees him face no subsequent repercussions, and he remains eligible for crucial World Cup matches.
One must then ponder: why the glaring discrepancy? Why does a player from Japan face significant penalties for an accidental clash, while a player from England walks free after a clear shoulder charge?
This video aims to highlight and question these very inconsistencies. We're not pointing fingers at individual players or referees who, in the heat of the moment, are doing their best. Our focus is on the governing body, World Rugby, and the evident contradictions in their decisions. The reversal of Farrell's red card, in light of their own established TMO bunker system, raises eyebrows.
The committee's statement, emphasizing the "luxury of time" they had in contrast to the Foul Play Review Officer, seems to ironically undermine the purpose of the TMO bunker system. If World Rugby's newly introduced system is effectively sidelined by the committee's claim of having a more detailed deliberation process, it brings to light a pressing question: Is the TMO bunker system even necessary? And if it is, shouldn't its decisions be given the weight and respect they deserve?
In conclusion, while the Farrell Red Card controversy is just one of many incidents in the vast world of rugby, it serves as a glaring example of the existing contradictions within the sport's governing body. Fans, players, and stakeholders of rugby deserve consistency, clarity, and fairness. World Rugby, as the governing body, has the responsibility to ensure that the spirit of the game is upheld, that decisions are consistent and transparent, and that player safety remains paramount.

For those of you who care, I'm not changing the title. World Rugby appealing this decision, changes absolutely nothing. Where were they when he got away with all the other stuff? The only reason they're appealing is because the whole rugby community called them out on their BS. Not to mention, there's been no word on them reducing the 10 week ban on George Moala from Tonga. And for people saying it's the 6 Nations that is to blame, you might want to go look into the people that are part of these "independent" committees, then you'll see that World Rugby is at fault.

The problem is that technically, Farrell only has 3 incidents on his record (2016, 2020 and 2023) because he never got sanctioned for any of his other hits. So his legal team can use his "Clean" record as a defence, which is the issue we have because the whole reason his record is so "clean" is because he never gets punished for it.

I'd hope for not too long a ban but would have to accept what you get. He has shown that this type of tackle is not a bug but a feature.

They basically said the fact that Taine Basham suddenly changed direction, because he was being tackled, caused him to dip and that's mitigation to reduce the sanction to a yellow card. What an absolutely disgraceful decision. It does not take into account that Owen Farrell's body height is always upright and that he lifts his height to make the no arms tackle. It was a red card offence and he should have been banned for it.
To make matters worse there's footage of George Moala tip-tackling a Canadian player, where he let's the player go in the air and causes him to land on his side and back. Under the guidelines for this type of tackle I believe this was a yellow card at worst and yet he has been suspended for 10 weeks and has a relatively clean judicial record when compared to Farrell's. What an absolute disgrace World Rugby. Sort it out!

    • @2earache
      @2earache 9 месяцев назад

You are very wrong in your first sentence pronouncement. Mitigation allows or should allow a concentrated viewing to be focussed on whether the offending player had issues coming into that contact point, and whether it be unavoidable in any possible way. Only then can judgement be passed. If there is absolute clarity that a player had no intention whatsoever of displaying his contact aggression or even ability to tackle according to already laid down regulations, then the word ‘mitigation’ ceases to be.
We all know that more and more rules over the years have been introduced to not only improve the quality of the game but to, out of necessity, protect as best as possible the potential health damage to any of those involved in this violent sport.
These rules have to develop and develop in absolute consistency if they are to work. Like every new idea, they must evolve and hopefully evolve as rapidly as possible. If you reflect on the head-on clashes from the 1980’s over the following 25 year period, the collisions were absolutely brutal, just savage. For whatever reason, that was one of the appeals in those days. It was inevitable that to lengthen both the quality of the player’s top performance and his need to lead a healthy lifestyle off the field too, then these changes had to kick in. Please remember both the past and the future and notice overall how beneficial the shift in the game has become. World Rugby as an officiating body of course has an awful lot to answer for - just as the FIA representing Formula 1 has its room full of muddled, incoherent old men meandering about and navel-gazing - but with all the pressure from the coaching staff, many clubs and players, a way of satisfaction will be established and we can all move forward.

I’m sorry but being Owen Farrell does not constitute mitigation… head collision that Willemse had this weekend had mitigation (I still would have given red considering they want to put down head contact but no ban it would be fair) in that situation it would have been very hard to avoid a head in collision… now compare that to this case and not the same… Owen as he always does purposefully went for the shoulder charge… maybe he did t aim for the head but shoulder chargers like this are illegal for this very reason… it’s reckless, dangerous and even a school boy knows better… Had I even done that at school rugby I probably would have been banned from ever representing my school back then…

He has been given immunity from referees on the pitch for his entire career, even his comical attempts at a tackle when he bounced in the air are illegal. To make things worse, when a legal hit is made on him he reacts appallingly.
Across social media almost everyone is astonished by this decision, even 95% of comments from English rugby fans are appalled.

The Welsh dude went into the tackle with his shoulder it was Farrells super quick reaction that saved himself from taking a hit straight on . In the replay you see Farrell go to wrap his arms around the Welsh man, but sees the Welsh dude turn in with his shoulder like a battering ram so in a split second instinctively Farrell turns and stiffens and meets the Welsh foe shoulder to shoulder and takes the sting out of the impact from the Welsh attack. If in the rules that description I've given is a banning offence, the offensive player can lead with a shoulder, then fine.

In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses).

First, thank you for your quality content. Then, I wondered what you thought of the refereeing of international matches in general.
Indeed, it is often said that the minor nations are not refereed like the strongest. I'm not sure about that, however I have the strong impression that teams that transcend world rugby (I'm thinking especially of Ireland) are entitled to enormous preferential treatment.
I don't watch much of the games of the southern nations but in Europe I often see actions / tries canceled by the TMO when it concerns smaller teams. But when Ireland plays it's as if the TMO looked elsewhere to the point of granting completely illegal tries, or not notifying the bets. The world rugby world cup is here and and I'm afraid that the federation has already chosen its winner.
However, Ireland has enormous merit for the place it maintains.
Thank you for your answer and good luck.

My view at the time was that the red card was correct and that still remains my view. The justification from the independent Judicial Committee(IJC) was that the actions of George (making a tackle) cause Basham to significantly change directions. In one sense the IJC was correct, George's actions did push Basham and cause him to change direction
BUT...George's actions did not cause Basham to change his height. So I am left with the conclusion that OF was always going to get his shoulder/upper arm into Basham's head, all George's action did was determine which point of Basham's head would receive OF's shot.

I've been watching Rugby Union for over 50 years. I've seen how the game has changed in that time. I remember the deliberate high tackles perpetrated by certain well-known players & sides (yes, All Black's, I'm looking at you). Having played myself I know just how dangerous high tackles are: I spent time in hospital after one. So when the rules were finally changed, I thought it a good thing. Yes, accidents will happen, it's a contact sport. BUT. Owen Farrell has form. He's done this before. He's been suspended before for high tackles. And he has a temper, as evidenced in the video. His shoulder charge was not only deliberate but completely in character. His red card was completely justified, as was the ban. But that didn't suit the RFU, did it? World Rugby can't decide if its got a spine or not over the incident, nor does it even have a coherent ban/suspension policy in terms of how long the ban/suspension should be.
As expected, the England defence coach Kevin Sinfield has defended Farrell & said the criticism is because Farrell is England Captain. In a way, he is correct. Not in the way Sinfield thinks, however. Farrell should be criticised BECAUSE he's the England Captain & because he is a serial offender who has proven time & again that he is either incapable or unwilling to change. Sinfield further states that Farnell has been doing a lot of work on his tackling since his last suspension. I'll keep my thoughts to myself about that, but i would question whether the situation had some bearing on it. His tackle led to the Welsh player, Taine Basham, being taken off & failing the concussion examination. No one seems to care about that.
In my opinion, Farrell shouldn't be allowed to play in the World Cup. That might make him change. But honestly, I doubt it.

They gave Farrell a permission to keep on tackling like this in the future, because there is nothing wrong with the tackle, even if it means his opponent can get a serious injury or end someones career. Did they think about all the complications if he does it again and the the other player is seriously injured or paralyzed. They will be responsible because they allowed him to tackle like that.

Sudden change of direction, big forward caught off guard, accidental but serious head clash, both players concussed, Ta’avao red carded and subsequently suspended. Unfortunate but hard to argue that outcome. All you can ask for is consistency. If an accidental head clash results in a red card and suspension, then how does a repeat offender like Farrell keep getting protected?
