  • My intention was to create a great tutorial video for flying VFR on VATSIM in the USA. Instead it turns into a personal case study about how I screwed up!

    Really sorry about not calling that traffic on final for 18C. And I try not to flip out when somebody does something wrong.

    Thank you for sharing your experience in this flight. It was very helpful for this VATSIM novice as I was unsure of the top-down controller communications protocols. Additionally, your graceful handling of a mistake on landing at Charlotte was something I will remember and hope to emulate. On my first VATSIM flight I accidentally broke the KLAX class B airspace. Very embarrassing, but the controllers were kind when correcting my mistake as well. Best wishes.

      I don't yell at people very often, I only yell at people when they REALLY fucked themselves and this wasn't one of those cases.

    How do you change/transition from a right downwind to a left downwind once you entered it? You cannot just cross the runways or the paths leading to them, can you? I think it would have been better if the tower gave you a vector instead of changing the downwind.

      Escylon yeah perhaps. I guess the expectation was for me to carry on east across the final approach and then enter left downwind. Maybe if I’d flown over the airfield overhead first that would have been easier....but 23 was in use so probably wouldn’t have worked

      Well if I interpreted this comment correctly, Phil was in between final approach courses with planes on approach for 18C with most of my (east tower's) traffic redirected by approach to 23 which is how I wanted it. I knew there was nobody on final for 18L and not putting him on the left downwind would've caused more harm than doing nothing and letting him fly between finals. Hope this addresses what you're saying.

    If there is a CTR, is there a altitude below i can fly without contacting any Controller? In Germany we can fly below an altitude on 122.8 and when above that Alt contact the CTR.

      Slightly simplified answer but below 18,000 and not inside class B C or D airspace you can go anywhere you like and speak to no one in the USA
