    Excellent video. Is a fuse box a better option than one single tender if there are multiple devices being powered. I have led lights, a USB charger attached to the same battery and then the tender for trickle charging. Appreciate any help on that. Thanks.

    A good tip is to hot glue the loose nuts on your battery after tightening the bolts. That way they will stay in place if you do remove the battery terminal bolts. Always wire the SAE connectors so the positive female side is protected and the negative bullet connector exposed so you never short anything out.

    Keep in mind if the inline fuse blows the batter charger/tender will not work. Also, newer Harley's come from the dealer with a battery tender connection AND the Fuse is NOT Inline. The 7.5amp mini fuse is located in the main fuse compartment.

    Hey.. nice video. Thanks for the tips about increasing the fuse size to 15 Amp and cutting an opening in the ring terminal to make installation easier.. Because i have dropped that battery nut already.. Have a question for you.. Should i leave the tender always connected or connecting tender once a week to recharge the battery be okay too? This is for a car that is driven once a week for short trips.

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 года назад +3

      Glad it helped. If you are driving the vehicle once a week connecting to the Battery Tender is not really necessary, as the battery will charge as you drive, although it won't hurt to hook it up once a week.

    I've got a 2000 harley FXDX with a DEKA ETX20L Powersports AGM Battery 12V 310CCA 17.5Ah. My bike doesn't a battery tender lead so I need to buy one. When I install it permanently so I can just leave it connected while riding, do I install the lead to both terminals on my battery, or do I connect the negative lead to the frame to earth it?

  • @slimpickering1699
    @slimpickering1699 4 года назад +3

    Important to note: once installed, always connect the Battery Tender to the battery lead with the the Tender unplugged. Plug to the battery first, then plug the Tender into the outlet.

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 года назад +3

      Why would you suggest this? The Battery Tender® is spark free.. The output alligator clips or ring terminals will not spark
      when they are touched together. The Battery Tender® Junior charger will not produce an output voltage until it senses at least 3 volts from the battery. It must be connected to a battery with the correct polarity before it will start charging a battery. Therefore, if you plug the AC power cord into
      an AC power outlet, and if the output alligator clips or ring terminals are not connected to a battery, and if you touch the alligator clips or ring terminals together, there will be no electrical spark. This would be the only reason I could see your warning.

    This setup is only good for maintenance charging or accessory loads, not suitable for jump starting.
    On my setup, my battery is buried deep where you require an allen t-wrench to remove a toolbox (which contains the allen, thus impossible to get off without having extra allen which I did not have), so I attempted to jump start my bike using this SAE plug sticking out. However, that just blew the fuse in the pigtail (on first cranking attempt) so I still had to find an allen somehow (called the wife to come rescue me), remove the toolbox cover, open battery door to jump start directly on battery lugs. Since I do not use this plug for other accessories (as I have other fused SAE plug up on fairing), then I will most likely remove the fuse on this lower SAE plug near the battery so when I plug in a jumper cable adapter, that I can get full power through it. Or better yet, may just switch to larger gauge wire and plug heavier than an SAE to make a custom jump start connector, suitable to get spikes up to 50 amps or something. Because this is bad news when just leaving your key on engine off for 20 mins can ruin your day and you can't just use the SAE to jump it real fast.. Also going to get a Propower Volt Jump Starter to carry in back...

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  4 года назад

      The wires of the Battery Tender Ring Terminal set-up can not handle battery power for a jump! Even with a large enough fuse... you will melt the wiring and may possibly even cause a FIRE! IT's bad! I have an AntiGravity Ring Terminal mounted to my bike that has a battery situation such as yours... it sticks out and allows me to JUMP whenever needed without removing anything from the bike! This is what it looks like: antigravitybatteries.com/products/accessories/micro-start/jump-starting/clampless-starting-harness-sport-xp1-xp3/ Highly recommended! -- Kyle

    • @samsonite8017
      @samsonite8017 4 года назад

      @@chaparralmotorsports Yeah let me clarify now, I am not going to remove the fuse on the original pigtail because I did realize later, the gauge is too small for jump start. I may replace the SAE pigtail with a 10 gauge one (and no fuse), but I am actually thinking now of just running a single 8 gauge (or so), wire off the positive of the battery out to a bolt mounted on an insulator which a jumper cable can be connected to directly and just leave the stock SAE pigtail there only for the charger/maintainer use. Then when jumping, it has its own single positive wire, and can use the crash bar as a ground for the jumper cable.

If you use this, just disconnect it from the accessory and plug it into a battery tender. Win Win. -- Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
