Good job Steve I have done something similar on all my previous bikes :) One thing to stress is that on the bike end you must ensure (like you did) that the negative is connected to the male pin and the positive to the female pin. This will prevent you from accidentally shorting out the battery positive against the frame when you tuck the cable back in :)

Glad to see you still ride the Grom. When I hear about the traffic in Zion and Bryce I think of you driving the Grom to avoid the parking hassle! Good diy trick!

Good solution. I hardwired the whole assembly once on my lawn mower. Found out there was not a diode in the circuit and if the charger was not plugged into the wall, it would discharge the battery overnite. Not a problem the way you did it.

I have done this dozens of times. The connector is called an SAE connector (some people call them trailer connectors). I have created three SAE connectors on my RV alone, one for the house battery, one for the engine, and one for a separate (‘house”) battery bank I made myself. Works great. You can buy 10 gauge ones online, the reason for that is for a solar hookup, it needs a thicker wire.

XT60 connectors commonly used in the RC and solar community is a good alternative for those who prefer non-exposed terminals.

Its good to periodically check those cheap harbor trickle chargers. That red light comes on when attached to a battery regardless if its plugged into the ac outlet. It uses the batteries power to also light up the red led. I had one kill a battery because the ac power adapter failed and I thought it was good because that red led was on. Just periodically disconnect one of the leads to battery and see if led stays lit or not. If not than that means that charger isnt working.

Why always? If It is a preference, I get that, but all manner of electronics from your computer to your car uses connectors. If insulated, they have no disadvantage.

Now that you have that connector hot-wired directly to the battery, other things can be plugged into the same connector when the battery tender is not connected, such as cigarette lighter adapter then a USB port can be plugged into that. I plug my heated riding gear into that connection. I've used it to recharge my phone and camera.

It is great to carry on the hitch. Power and speed is good. There are many choices. This was for a specific use and purpose and so is great for that.

I have a set of original 1996 Toyota forerunner wheels the exact same as yours which I pulled off my brand new forerunner at the time and they have been sitting in my basement. I would be more than happy to send them to you all you would have to do is pay for shipping. I was the one that commented to you on your video with Den of tools that I bought an Xplorer van because of you and I have done most of your mods. I want to return the favor.

Oh man, sorry missed replying. Sounds really good but I think I can cover it with paint and it will be fine. She's nice but no show car. Good luck on your Xplorer. I am looking to get out here soon. Spring awaits.

I would use a fuse. If the two wires shorts when riding you are fucked.
