what i did to my nuts :), i put some liquid "super glue" (pen or squeeze type) that i bought at dollar store. put some glue around the nuts, one side top only and screw the bolts in to the nuts inside the terminals, tighten a little bit until nuts make a good contact under the terminal holes; let them dry for about a minute or so until the nuts made a contact, then remove the bolts to see if the nuts is already glued tight under the terminals. when you unscrew the bolts back out, the bolts are perfectly aligned to the nuts. keep the bolts screwed in until you put the battery inside, remove the bolts and screw the wires back in.
The problem with this is you lower the surface area of the connection and create more resistance to the current. This can cause the battery to heat up when drawing normal rated amps.
that's what i do i have a bunch of those square nuts, brass and zinc plated
Nice trick. A bit of heavy-duty Scotch-brite pad cut to fit worked for me in place of the hose (which I didn't think of at the time).

I roll electrical tape sticky side out for about 3 layers around a pencil. Insert it as shown with the tube here. The adhesive really helps hold the nut in place and you can find electrical tape almost everywhere. Hose of the right size can be tougher to find. Having said that, I really like the battery brands that are now threading the terminals so that no nuts are needed. That is the right solution. Yuasa and others should wake up.

This small problem drives me nuts. What's the matter with battery manufacturers? Can't they design a solution into the batter post?

I use MotoBatt batteries. Their battery terminals do not have a nut that can fall out. Instead they have threaded posts so the bolt screws straight in.

i bought a new battery but i embarassingly dont know the basics of nut and bolt and failed to put it in hahaha. this is so annoying.
So I just got a new mower. I know nothing about mechanics. It has an agm battery. I searched the internet on how to install and could not figure it out. The instruction manual was useless.
Watched this video. Since I’m not handy I didn’t have rubber house. But I used a rubber band instead. Worked like a charm.
I could not figure out how to put the bolts on. You really did make my weekend. And when the boy gets up from nap he’s gonna be so excited to start the mower. Thank you so much

I always gooped the nut in with dielectric grease. That usually holds it close enough, and has the added benefit of keeping the terminals from getting gross.

Great trick on getting the nut to stay! I actually used a coaxial cable, got both bolts started, then I was able to pull out the cables and then tighten the bolts all the way. Thank you!

Great idea. I used this to install my motorcycle battery. Only difference was my terminals are packed with grease from the factory so the nuts don't fall out. I used the tube because I couldn't get the screw started!!! Once started I just pulled the tube out. Obviously I have better access to my battery to do this (as opposed to a snowmobile.

What a life saver I have an Orion 250 and my battery died so I too it out gave it a charge and I haven’t been able to put the bolts back in. I got close with a magnetic tipped screw driver but this has saved me and for that I thank you👍

This saved me so much hassle trying to swap out my waverunner battery. I had a soda straw that ended up being a perfect fit and compresses flat if needed.

This is exactly what I needed to see. Thank you, I sent a small donation to your paypal just because you saved me a lot more swearing today. My battery came with tiny nuts that couldn't sit flat and it was just not happening. What a stupid design, the terminals should have threaded inserts built in.

Great idea! I couldn't find any tubing, but I used some rubber 0.120" screen spline (doubled width for stability) and it held the nuts perfectly. Thanks for the wonderful idea!!!

With your video and demonstration, you solved a common and annoying problem regarding these scooter battery nuts that fall off all the time when installing a battery and attaching anything to it such as charger ring terminals. That is a great trick that you came up with. Based on that, have the scooter battery companies not figured out a solution to that problem yet?

Wish I had seen this Vid first just struggled to fit a battery tender to my motorbike I used 2 cocktail sticks to hold the nut up I got it in the end but your idea seems better.

i use a little hot glue and it works great. Might even work that much better with a bit of hose in there.

You could make a hole through the piece of tube so the bolt goes through it and doesn't prevent the bolt from tightening all the way down, this would also prevent the piece of tube becoming compressed so it will still hold the nut in place the next time you disconnect the battery.
I was thinking the same thing. Great minds ;)

I cut a couple pieces from some ear plugs and slid em underneath. No measuring necessary.

I use a piece of sponge / nylon scouring pad . It’s squishy with lots of thread allowance but holds that crap nut system in place .

On my latest Yuasa battery the hole on the side is already shaped like it does not let the nut to fall out if the battery is not upside down. Too bad that the latest laws require the sellers to fill the battery before shipping so they opened the box, filled the battery with acid and lost the bolts before I could loose them...
Deka has threaded posts. No back nut needed. Why haven't all mfg figured this out???

a small piece of folded zip works well. I had to deal with this on my quad this week. Stupid design, especially if you have more than one terminal under the bolt. A simple spring loaded nut would solve this problem.

good tip.. but just glue the bolt up in there take the screw out when its dried and its always lined up.
The problem with this is you lower the surface area of the connection and create more resistance to the current. This can cause the battery to heat up when drawing normal rated amps.
@@jeffsfolio no you dont AT ALL, the surface area is above where the nut is...
What is your opinion in installing (on a 90's boke) a li-ion battery instead of acid type without any modifications on the charging system?

What size bolt/ nut is typically used?
Just so we are clear, are you following me? You only need to have the hose in to get the screw started and the you can pull it out and continue tightening down your eyelets. Are you following me?
We grabbed Shane quick and he said "you are absolutely correct...when there is room. Some models slide batteries in where the ground side is dang near impossible to attach as the cable is so short and a tight space. They literally gave zero room. Rare case that came to mind. Also many batteries that need "tipped out" will like the nut being captured and it's ready for the next time". I like your linking though...Shane

What was the tubing exactly??? Easily found?
Maybe you missed it or you must have not had the volume on when you watched it....this was battery vent hose but any tubing will do from the hardware store.

The way these battery connectors are designed has always seemed odd to me. I guess the problem is that lead is too ductile to retain threads, so they design a hole in the lead to accept a steel, mobile nut. Electrical contact is maximized with less chance of damaging threads. Good idea....

Great tip, I was so annoyed what a stupid design this is. Why couldn’t they just weld that thread on in the first place. Some batteries have it already built in.

nice vid. cheeky question i have a battery that i want to replace but the bolts are starting to round and the terminals starting to turn if i put any real pressure on it. apart from drilling the bolt out do you recommend any other way?
Possibly use a broken-bolt extractor socket that's large enough to get around what you have left of a bolt head? Or maybe lock-jaw pliers, if you can manage enough space to get in there. Of course, don't reuse the battery bolts once you have 'em out, as they will no doubt be even WORSE mutilated.

Can't tell you as there are many different battery types with different materials for posts and even the battery bolt material can determine torque. Number. Good idea but all I do is pack that nut area with Vaseline and the nut stays put.
I hear you....but in some applications where heat is involved (like a snowmobile where the exhaust heat is high) the vaseline or grease will not stay put on removal after its been in service. These sled batteries for example have to be tipped in and the nuts fall out easily...

just use masking tape around the hole, no need to be so difficult.

Or a thickness of cardboard... or a small piece of styrofoam... or a cable-tie... or any other number of appropriately sized items that will hold the nut in place. I prefer a cable tie because it's easy to yank out, once the threads engage. The tubing he uses is decent material too, as it has a good amount of "springiness" to it. However, personally I'd use a 1-3" long piece, so I could more easily yank it out (I prefer not to leave it there).
Why why whyyyyyyyyy don’t the battery manufacturers get smart & make the nut part of the upper part of the terminal???!!!
I just use a magnet. Granted I have room to. Good trick tho

I've got an easier way. Just use some Vaseline, or any kind of petroleum lip balm. Holds it in place well it's not going anywhere
I hear you...but this method will save you if you don't hit it just right as the nut will spring back instead of "out"...surely a time and place tip...especially blind access batteries underneath a motorcycle or snowmobiles too.
