  • We use all the research tools at our disposal to analyze exactly what grip size can change in the golf swing. The GEARS 3D motion tracking system gives us precise data on clubface angles, dynamic loft, closure rate and more - paired with GC Quad for ball flight tracking, we were able to produce a definitive explanation of how to use grip sizes to influence the swing.

Reg grip my top hand fits well and bottom part of the grip is too small...mid size grip is too big for my top hand but the bottom hand fits better...+4 is the best and is made because of feedback from pros...It was very difficult to get a consistent grip position with the grip too small because you cant feel that you are strong or weak quite as well .

So you spend a couple of hours painstakingly fitting a set of irons. Then with 5 minutes left you get asked what grip you want. You pick one and it change everything about your delivery and impact. So fit the grip first?

The one time I’ve ever gotten an extremely in depth fitting like they offer one of the first questions the fitter asked me was what grip I play. Like I’m pretty sure it was the second or third question. He proceeded to use an air compressor to put “my grip” on every single thing I made a swing with. Ended up with the best set of irons I’ve ever owned to this day. I didn’t even know that changing grips with an air compressor was a thing until that day.

I recently changed to a midsize grip and noticed this very thing in my delivery. I was a very low spin player, but noticed my spin increase from 5600 to 7500 with my eight iron with an increased grip size and ball change. I changed grip size to change my swing weight based upon your previous swing weight video, but had other positive effects. Been utilizing all your videos to fit myself to the equipment that I have and not having to buy a whole new set of clubs. Shot dispersion is much tighter. Great video gents. As a 60 something the pain that comes with age is starting to set into the hands. Having small hands I usually use standard size grips, but have been trying a midsize in my driver and one hybrid. Results have been wonderful. Both clubs have become more accurate most likely due to less rotation and re-gripping during the swing. The connection feels much more consistent. Next up, make the dive and change out the whole set.

Pure gold and right on time. For fun i ordered raw components and built a custom set of clubs yesterday. I installed the Jumbo max XL grips on them to try them as I was struggling with face control. I kept telling my instructor I felt like I was "dumping" the swing. basically as Ian is describing it as moving the path more right to accommodate the excessive closing of the face. It's an odd sensation but I was absolutely reacting to the face of the club. I'm sure people think the grips are ridiculous but I'm 6'7" and my hands are about 10 inches long (XXXL) glove. Jumbo max probably feels to me like an standard jumbo feels like to someone with "regular" size hands. I liken it to the time I finally found 36" inseam pants. I was like ohhhhhhhhhhh so this is what it feels like when something fits correctly, how nice!

I had some grips put on my irons by Golf Galaxy...I wanted standard grips because that’s what I always used. However, they messed up and put a midsize grip on my 7 iron, which I didn't notice until I took them to the range after I picked them up. Well, I was a bit PO’d at first, but after I started to hit my 7 iron, it was like an epiphany of divine intervention…I hit them so well and it felt so good, I knew I was playing the wrong sized grips…bit the bullet, took them back and told them the situation and GG was great about it, they put midsized grips on all my clubs and I only paid for the grips, free install. Basically, I have much more clubface awareness and my ball striking improved a ton with the large midsize grip. I would encourage golfers that play standard grips to put a midsize grip on their 7 iron and try it out at the range, you may have the same experience.

Very interesting find but there are other points to consider:
    1. Other possible variables are weight and swing weight. How do they contribute to the ROC?
    2. Is a higher spin loft achieved by a slower ROC desirable? If this means the face is open and the ball does not start online anymore? 5:35
    3. Is this info applicable in a fitting? I don't know of any golfer who comfortably switches between undersize, std. size and jumbos.
Great find. But sorry boys, I had to curb your enthusiasm.
Looking forward to more gears stuff!

No problem, we will continue to play devil’s advocate ourselves until we understand how to control the variables. However to answer your questions.
      1) We change the weight variables you mention regularly without seeing a change of this nature.
      2) Higher spin loft is very desirable as a club fitter in an era where the ball doesn’t spin anymore. Taking spin off the golf ball is a lost art with today’s equipment. So I LOVE have having the option to try this with a player when the situation presents its self.
      3) I could give you countless instances where golfers said they’d never switch to 460cc heads or out of their beloved DG S300 when they swing 6iron at 80 mph. The reality is if there is tangible evidence the it can have a positive effect on the outcome golfers will try it.
We’ll continue digging however as there certainly is more treasure to be found!!

I'll foreshadow the specifics about deflection that Ian hinted at near the end of the video. I read a published paper that demonstrated increases in shaft deflection with increases in rotation. So the undersize grip causing increased rotation is ALSO increasing shaft deflection, and the oversize grip with slower rotation has less shaft deflection respectively.

Admittedly with the exception of oversized putting grips that have kinda taken the golf world by storm the last decade or so grip size was nothing I ever paid attention to in my clubs until last year when I had this old driving iron re-gripped. The guy at the shop that re-gripped it for me either accidentally put on the wrong grip or perhaps thought that was the one I wanted . I could notice the difference in feel when I put it in my hand and I actually liked the way it felt so I told him to let me try it out before changing it out again. Went and hit some shots with it and I never hit that club better. Ended up putting the same Multi Compound OS grips on all my clubs and I don't think I'm ever gonna go back.

Very cool video guys, that definitely validates the main things I have experienced and what the general wisdom has been. I have ALWAYS been more comfortable with a slightly smaller grip on my 3w as I use as primarily a right to left club (as a righty) off the tee. Instinctively I always felt like that made it easier to start the ball right and get it moving left, and that makes sense given not only the increased face rotation, but the subsequent swing path compensation that we make in response to it. Science!
I have also found a similar affect with counterweights as well. More/heavier weight under the hands slowed face rotation. That would be a great test for you guys too!

@@Melchior11 the swing weight point changes aren't a one size fits all influence, meaning a slightly higher swing weight isn't going to affect Matts delivery the same as you or I. Some people can have great success with a wide range of swing weights and some people are really sensitive to small changes enough so that it mentally causes them to swing different. Completely player dependant.

@@kourt2469 Absolutely. Just wondering what the impact to the equation would be for Matt. Smallest to largest grip size could be 3 swingweight of difference, which is not insignificant to delivery.

Excellent. Fascinating. So much additional information to to add into the mix. The numbers don't seem big, but that's a pretty significant change between the biggest and smallest. I think you've found your content list for the next few years - redo all previous tests, using gears :)

Went back and rewatched this video. Amazing insight here.
Ian, what size grips are you playing in 2021? Did the insight you gleaned from your grip size testing influence you to change your grip size - and if so, what were the results?
I'm playing Lamkin midsize grips, which I love - but they're getting a bit glassy and hard now (time for a regrip). I definitely need new grips, but I want to retain all of the great things that have been happening with my irons over the last two years (with the midsize grips). Is this something that can/would be covered in an iron fitting at TXG? I think that - seeing the results of a grip size change on GC Quard, along with a TXG fitter's input - would provide the best outcome. I also think I have answered my own question!
Let us know if you changed your grip size after this video.
Fantastic content - love (and appreciate) all of your videos!!! ~JT

Ok so I game midsize +4 align. So according to this video. If I go down to a standard grip it should help straighten out my flight. And bring down my ball flight.

I should be in midsize based off some of the suggestions I’ve heard and read. I changed to midsize and I struggled to release the club. Maybe because they were a lot softer than I was used to? CP2 Pro by GP...don’t do all your clubs like I did. I’ve now found a comfort zone with 3-4 wraps under my bottom hand or a “plus 4” style grip. Play what feels comfortable and gives you the best results!

Great video! I love the feel of a midsize grip but often use a standard grip and build it up quite a bit to save weight even though it wears the grip quicker.

  • @charlieodom9107

I just installed Jumbo grips on my irons, and initial results I experienced more consistent ball striking and straighter ball flights, but the contact was more on the bottom of the head and flight path was more right of target vs a standard grip.
I'll need to work on how I hold the club, and concentrate on moving contact up the face.

Love this..... it’s all in the detail chaps eh. I’m wondering if my grips are a tad bulked 🧐 my previous irons had standard grips and it’s fair to say my flight was more neutral. Reviewing the grip size etc for the new irons when fitted.. that’s for sure. Stay safe chaps

I’ve got mmc plus 4 midsize on all my irons and love them, but here’s where it obviously affect rotation because I’ve also got one one my 3 wood but not the 5 wood and I can’t for the life of me square the face with the fat grip on the 3 wood. Both rogue fairways standard size 5 wood grip goes dead straight

    • @canyonaro
      @canyonaro 4 года назад

I've seen something similar. Absolutely love them on my wedges and irons & it's eliminated my tendency to hook my 3-wood off the deck. Kills me with the driver though - I hit straight blocks. A friend of mine had the same problem and fixed it by going from the +4 to the regular (left hand same, right hand thinner) just on the driver. Same effect as going thinner - slightly increase closure rate.

My glove size is XXL and I’ve always used Jumbo size grips. I hit a nice high draw which I’m comfortable with. If I use regular or midsize, I start to flip my hands at impact and develop a low hook. One thing that I don’t understand is, why when I go for a club fitting, they fit me using regular size Grips!

Makes a bit of sense, greater circumference of the grip the further the hand has to twist to get the same amount of face rotation.

I've been using golf pride mcc4 jumbos on my irons for a few years. Absolutely love them. Really minimize face rotation. Tried the same grips on driver and woods and they were absolutely terrible! Too much weight and counter balancing on such a light long club. Would like to see the same same done with a driver because trying to have a slightly upward attack angle with a driver with a massive grip was very difficult for me.

Just got my new irons in, went with midsize grip mcc +4. Coming from stock taylormade standard size grips. These new ones feel way different, and my hand size is right at the top of standard, and bottom of midsize. Will take awhile to get used to I feel, but looking forward to playing them.
