My hands are fairly small for a guy and I have always used standard size. Recently changed to mid size and what a great difference. I put on the Golf pride CP2 wraps and Pro's and its a much better golfing world for me. The difference in performance is unbelievable. My ability to control the golf club increased greatly. Sad thing is the grip size is a part of the puzzle that golfers almost never think about. This was an excellent tutorial on grip size. Very thoughtful. Another thought. Its not always an exact science. When I went to my fitters and put my hands against the chart to measure for grip size it read that I should be using standard or maybe a tad smaller. Yet you put a mid size grip on the club and those two fingers just barely or lightly touch as mentioned in this video. So I had two different choices. I decided to go with what felt better in my hands. I also had an old hybrid club that had always been my best bet in the bag. I checked the grip size and it was mid size . So the measuring charts may say one thing and your results might indeed be better going up a size.
same thing happened to me. i’m supposed to go one undersize according to the chart but tried a mid driver and it felt great. i’m probably about to bite the bullet and order a set
I have slightly larger than average hands. Have been using standard size +1/64. Recently I stand midsize (+3/64). Irons are better eliminated left miss having trouble with driver slicing. Likely a swing issue with driver as 3 and 7 woods are not slicing.
Recently started regriping all my extra clubs in the garage after watching your videos, practicing for my play set. This video hit just ar the right time as I'm going with xl grips and 2 wraps on top and 3 on the bottom. Keep em coming!!!!
TY! Great info tutorial about grip sizes, I didn't know anything about it, but it makes perfect sense, I have big hands and been short changing my grip, now I know what to do! 👊👊👍💯
Great point. I wear a cadet large glove so it makes sense, plus I have arthritis and carpel tunnel so it helps there’s too. Other golfers I played with this year noticed them and asked to swing my club to get a feel for them and every one of them decided to re-grip.
Interested in seeing a video regarding putter grips. How to size and most importantly how to install correctly regarding installation and correct alignment . Great channel live your content.
I just got my 7 iron re-gripped to a midsize ($11 installed for a GP Tour Velvet), giving it a go at the range. If it feels nice I'll regrip the whole set. What's strange is that my fingers wrap around and slightly touch my palm for both standard and midsize grips. I wear an ML glove. I guess it'll just come down to feel for me.
Wow this came just as I’ve added two tapes under a standard grip. My problem was I kept pulling the ball left, checked that I was not going over the top so thickened the grip…..I must say it worked and my last game I was more accurate with my short irons…ball on green as opposed to left just off. I also as I had a jumbo grip (no idea how I came to have it) I put it on my pitching wedge…….I was hitting it straight as a die….only problem was it was going my normal 9 iron distance…..adapted to that. Still think I’ll go up to midsize…..I have a medium glove but I think my fingers are long and as you grip in the fingers a larger grip helps. Great video as always.
I switched to the Golf Pride CP2 Jumbo a couple months ago from standard ... big change, but the club just feels so much more secure in my hands with less grip pressure than ever .. will never go back.
I like the +4 grips for a lot of people, I sell a lot of the Tour Velvet +4 when the glove hand fingers are good against the palm test ...but they want a bit more to hold on to with the right hand
That’s a great point. I went midsize a little over a year ago. I wear a cadet large glove so it makes sense. Other golfers I played with this year noticed them and wanted to swing my club to see how it felt and they decided to regrip. I also have arthritis and carpel tunnel so they help there too. Haven’t seen other youtubers bring this up.
Don't forget that when adding layers over the grip there is already one under it. If you add 2 over the grip as shown and it feels comfortable then you need 3 u der when re-gripping for real
If you use hockey tape (cloth tape) instead of masking tape it has plenty of traction to play with it on the range. I taped up 3 of my irons at different thicknesses and played a full round with it
Basic rule with putter grips is the bigger the grip, the more it restricts your hand and wrist movement. It can be good if you are handsy or flippy in your stroke. Down side is you lose some feel. So that is the basic trade off. Personally I will try an oversized grip of some sort every few years, and then quickly realize that they just aren't for me. But you can totally use this same method with putter grips. Add some tape to the whole thing or just build up the lower hand to get more of that reduced taper feel.
I think way too many people are playing standard size grips simply because that's what came with a club. A lot of people would benefit from a larger size.
I remember seeing Jim Thorpe’s huge hands and he played with standard grips. That was odd now that we see Bryson DeChambeau with normal size hands playing huge Jumbo Max grips.
I think back then, everyone was playing with standard size grips. If you've been playing them successfully your whole life, probably not much incentive to change into the unknown. Today, many more options available.
even though i measure up for standard grips and fit a medium glove I by trail and error have found i like the +4 grips on my irons and a med on my driver, creates less grip presure and less had arm tension in the swing for me and has not changed my shot shape and allowed higher swing speeds
I've started down the Bryson oversized route. I started by trying it on my driver first. I had a cheap $20 driver and put the grip on. After 10 or so balls of adjustment I've never driven so well. I can control the club face far easier and added 30-50 yards compared to the stock grip with this club (220 -> 275). I've got another large grip coming to fit on my actual driver. I've also got two grips that are a size down coming to try on an iron and a hybrid.
@@EFGMC Ah ha. This is actually a real concern. I play in the UK where walking is the most common. So I'm gonna need to find something light with 14 dividers.
Hi great video I just tried my clubs and I was quite shocked I have two types of grips my wedges are midsize and the rest are standard but even with the standard grips my fingers are at least 1/4 inch gap ! I do have big hands but fingers are on the shorter side .. is it possible to have thinner grips ??? Thank you
I have the opposite problem. I need 1/64 under a standard mens grip. I find that can be a challenge to get right. It very much depends on the shaft size. Stretching a grip can be a hit and miss proposition.
Only wear a medium glove and standard grips always felt way too small. Midsize felt so much better. But all the literature says I'm standard, my coach said thats BS and to add some tape wraps. Settled on standard grip with 3/4 wraps of tape under. Cheap midsize grips are a bit smaller I've found so I can use one wrap with those. Try ONE club first and experiment then do the rest
Nice tip. Easy way to try it out. Wondering if a saran wrap on top of the tape could solve the grip loss issue 🤔 (for the testing phase, not permanently of course 😂)
Great tip, but intrigued as to what happens with those with mechanical issues ie rsi or worse still arthritis , MCC midsize +4 with 3 wraps, some may find that overkill for a medium hand, not me, your thoughts please. Not forgetting the bionic grips.
Got to use what makes sense for you and your particular situation. Bigger grips are going to be necessary sometimes even if it's not idea for ball striking.
Mine are "too big" but I've had hand issues and found that Jumbo grips (specifically ones with some shock absorption like the CP2 Pro) have really helped a lot. But obviously that's a special case that doesn't follow standard guidelines.
Ich habe alle meine Griffe auf Midsize geändert, es ist so als ob ich neue Schläger habe. Das Gefühl schon beim ansprechen hat sich enorm verbessert. Empfehlen kann ich den Winn-DR-Tac.
I've used std size all my life, but now I'm going to midsize, I think it will help reduce hooks. Also my clubs were too long, so with that and swing changed, I will be back to the fades again soon😉
The hand grip size indicator you spoke of regarding your fingers is useful...however given the trend to oversize grips (eg JumboMax) and the imperical evidence suggesting longer range (7-10yrds) and tighter spread, your grip finger guide would seem redundant 🤔
I moved to midsize because the left hand felt slightly loose at the top of the swing. Specifically between the fleshy pad of the thumb and grip. Tighter gripping helped but that made my hands hurt after a while.
Was hoping u could talk on counteweight and how much weight to start tinkering with in all clubs so I don't have to buy every weight in the shop. Thanks Lewis
Those are KBS Tour 120s. It's an older version of it. The new ones are a bit darker and have the shaft logo pre attached. These older ones came with shaft bands that I chose to leave off.
Hi . I love the video and I really learned something. So adding tape to the lower part of the club do you cut the tape half the side of the grip? Next question are you the maker of JP Wedges? Thanks, Robin.
I usually stagger the tape in half inch intervals so the tape is thickest at the tip end and tapers down in the middle to offset the taper of the shaft and grip. I'm not involved with JP wedges.
Thanks so much. Your videos are invariably helpful. Do we know if by adding extra layers of tape that the grip material is stretched enough to make it thinner, therefore counteracting some of the effect of the additional tape?
What about size and actual level of grip offered by the grip type, texture and traction etc? As diameter increases so does the surface area of contact, and I've found that it can really hinder my release. I've then gone from having a little too much draw spin from being 'handsy' to then hitting a little thin, topped or just plain poorly. It seems that i'm not releasing the club anything like the way I was previously and all timing is out. I'm now thinking of going to the same increased mid size but with a slightly smoother grip surface. Any thoughts or experience of this occurring?
I personally have the same size. But I know some people who have larger grips on their woods and I know people who put larger grips on their wedges. The majority of golfers have them all the same size though.
Might be a silly question but would changing the grips from a regular size (Winn grips) to an oversized rubber grip (tour wrap) mess up the club swing weight? I love the head weight on my clubs currently but the grips are way too small.
That would be a big change in grip weight. If you are concerned about it, I would stick with lighter oversize grips like the Winn or one of the lite JumboMax options.
Good morning from Canada. I enjoy your informative videos, thank you. My question is, I've purchased a new set of irons, can I use your air compressor trick to remove the grips on factory irons and put on a extra rap of tape to increase the grip size ?
Thanks for the video AJ, just curious, I've been told that the difference between standard and midsize is around 3~4 wraps, so is +1 wrap(1/64) or +2 wraps(1/32) more precisely in between? I'm a right-handed player and my left hand is exactly 20cm or 7.87 inches, is +1 wrap or +2 wraps on standard tour velvet grips going to fit better for my hand size? Thank you.
All comes down to feel. Other issue with any buildup tape is you are actually stretching and thinning out the grip walls when you do it, so even if you have extra layers of tape, the result will not necessarily be the same as a midsize grip for example.
@EFGMC I saw your video and tried this using my tennis racket overgrips. Works much better in that, it does not slip and you can take full shots without a problem
There are some thin tennis racquet style grip tapes made for golf clubs. You apply it over your old grips so it makes it a bit thicker and 1/8 the hassle of regripping. Any thoughts on JumboMax? I’m trying out their XS and S sizes definitely takes a bit of getting used to
I tried moving from standard to mid size some years ago on an old hybrid and was disappointed the feel off the face totally changed for the worse. Subsequently I was led to believe this might have been due to a change in the weight of the grip and therefore swing weight. Could this have led to the feel of contact becoming very dead and woolly? These days I use the MCC+4 but after watching this I am tempted to try a little more tape under the top part of the grip as well.
More material in the midsize grip will result in a bit less feel through the grip. That's just something you would need to get used to. Could it also be the change in SW, it could. Personally I think the importance of having the right size grip outweighs a loss of feel. If you keep using them from a month or so, I'd bet you'll stop noticing the difference.
Yes. Pretty simple to use a tool and remove the grips, let everything dry and then start over with extra tape. ruclips.net/video/wpVbsmVshyw/видео.html
Hi AJ. Great video as always. Recently I bought the Boccieri Secret Grip that weights 95g and tried it in my driver. SW dropped to C6, it was D2. It became the most consistent driver I've ever hit. I regrip my iron set with this 95g grip and surprisingly it is the best irons ever. Do you have any idea why this heavy grips work? At least for me. Also, what's your opinion about the Jumbomax grip used by Bryson DeChambeau? Merry Xmas and a very Happy New year!!
That is funny because I am planning a video for the new year about counter weighting drivers. Don't know if it will work for me but Jack Nicklaus used it in his old drivers. It's one of those adjustments that just works for some people and you won't know until you try it out and put some time into it. The Jumbo grips will also fall into that category. Might work, might not but you won't know unless you try. Personally not a fan of the big grips but that is just me.
I have full set of these grips on irons and driver. Anyone interested let me know! The irons are very easy to hit with the back weighted grips. Mr B had full equipment company that never quite made it commercially. Happy to contribute to mobile club maker for testing!
I use 5 wraps of tape and use a small med glove but it feels good. I can swing freely without chocking too hard on the club if that makes sense. It made no difference to my shot shape.
I have always found that a grip being larger is always far better than a grip being smaller for a golfer. The added tension from trying to hold onto that smaller grip, is bad news for consistency.
Hi AJ, would you say the industry speak when somone says I have 2 tapes is 2 tapes + the double sided tape. So esentialy 3 tapes? Also when u tape the bottom hand with say 2 tapes do you stagger them a little for a smoother transition? Could u do a vid on that one day....build up tapes and how to apply 🤔 Cheers.
So I always use the phrasing extra wraps of tape so 2x will equal 3 total pieces of tape. I do stagger the wraps when doing the built up lower hand about 1/2 inch per strip.
Something you need to try and see if it quiets your lower hand. Personally don't like them but maybe that's just being used to traditional taper for years.
Hi AJ, I am currently doing a study on driver shafts built with composite materials and you seem to have a great knowledge on shafts and golf equipment, I would love to be able to ask some questions as information is hard to find, do you have a Twitter or email for questions?
The idea is to make your lower hand have less tension that can be caused with a smaller grip diameter. Some people like it, some don't. That's why it's important to try it and see how if feels for you since two people can have opposite views on it.
Yeah that's fine and dandy but it would be sweet if you could remove old grips without damage. I just use the old golf pride tour velvet standard or lampkin standard on my wedges and hybrid not thick at all. I fee like putting more tape on just makes the grip feel gummy under it., I have huge hands but the thicker grips never feel right to me. I play a set of Callaway prototypes and it would probably save my hands having more rubber but I like the feeling.
I'm having issues in my top hand movement of top of grip moving as it doesn't sit well in cushion pad in palm and have over 7 months damaged my pinky joint just below finger in top of palm, had coach ask me about my hands and I felt left hand move about parallel and then right hand move at top this feeling is hand coming off club, do imneed bigger grips my top hand from wrist crease to longest finger is 7 1/4 inch and longest finger 3inch and i wear medium to medium large glove subject to maker
Adding extra tape layers to a grip usually increases the weight the same basic amount as a naturally thinker grip (maybe a few grams less). 4-5g of added weight will lower the swing weight 1 point. So a typical midsize grip will drop the swing weight 2-3 points. That being said, I usually don't advise trying to bring that swing weight back up with tip weights or lead tape just to hit a certain SW value since you are just adding more weight to the club and increasing the total weight.
@@EFGMC if I have a D5 driver and I move to a midsize grip +8gram I would rather swing weight the club back to D5 and have it heavier than play a D3 club
Do your hands control the grip? Or does the grip control your hands? If your hands are on the small side, try an undersized (or junior) grip, and get control of the club..
Wouldn’t it depend on how one grips the handle? Those who correctly grip in the fingers vs those who grip in the palm. Maybe should’ve made that a point right off.
It’s all personal preference lol. I’ve seen women use oversized and men’s use undersized(ladies) even with big hands hahaha. It’s all on what YOU LIKE not on what anyone else likes. There is a chart to base off but it’s all personal preference haha

I’m trying out their XS and S sizes definitely takes a bit of getting used to
Only put them on for a couple people and they pretty promptly had me remove them again. Take that for what it's worth.
How many layers of tape can be put on grips untill it’s too hard to slip on ?
Will it be easer with air ??
I need to change to midsize from standard. My grips on the club are still good....can I remove the grips and add wraps and RE-INSTALL the grips?
Yes. Pretty simple to use a tool and remove the grips, let everything dry and then start over with extra tape.

Could u do a vid on that one day....build up tapes and how to apply 🤔
Cheers.
So I always use the phrasing extra wraps of tape so 2x will equal 3 total pieces of tape.
I do stagger the wraps when doing the built up lower hand about 1/2 inch per strip.
@@EFGMC thanks🛠⛳
What’s your view on the low taper grips?
Something you need to try and see if it quiets your lower hand. Personally don't like them but maybe that's just being used to traditional taper for years.
would wrapping grip with tennis raquet tape accomplish the desired size?
Yes you could do that. See it on putters sometimes as a permanent thing.
Should u test the gap with a glove on, or would that matter?
Wouldn't hurt. If you are making full swings then probably want the grip assuming you usually wear one.
I’ve seen where extra grip thickness causes you to slice or fade more is this true?
Hi AJ, I am currently doing a study on driver shafts built with composite materials and you seem to have a great knowledge on shafts and golf equipment, I would love to be able to ask some questions as information is hard to find, do you have a Twitter or email for questions?
aj@smartstake.com
I have seen a lot of people going to 2 extra wraps under their lower hand….not sure what the advantages or disadvantages of this might be….
The idea is to make your lower hand have less tension that can be caused with a smaller grip diameter. Some people like it, some don't. That's why it's important to try it and see how if feels for you since two people can have opposite views on it.
@@EFGMC i am exactly the opposite... i run 2 extra at the butt end for more flare
Do we do this with a glove on or off when trying to find our size
I would use a glove if you use a glove.
If you wear a glove, put it on when measuring. Fairly sure it makes a difference, being as it really should feel like at least a single wrap, no?
Jumbo Max grips - give em a try
How many wraps between undersized and standard? I’m always sized for an undersized grip when I go to the golf pride and Winn websites.
It's 1/64 difference which is 1 or 2 wraps depending on the tape.
So undersize with 3 wraps is bigger than standard?
@@sumitagg1 It will be close. Depending on the tape and the grip itself, might be slightly bigger or smaller.
Is there a measurement for standard as compared to the next size?
Standard is .900 inch measured 2 inches down from end. Midsize is 1/32 inch over that.
Thanks for your help.
Could you comment on non-tapered grips?
Some people feel like it quiets your lower hand, takes some of the wristyness out.
The right size grip is jumbo, better even if your hands are smaller.
I would experiment with the tape method I showed to find what feels good, then apply that to the build up tape when regripping.
@@EFGMC what about 2 gloves?
@@nmelectricalservices262 Could try it. No idea what the result would be.
How would that affect swing weight?
@@krusher74 My only suggestion would be to try it at D3 before reseting to D5. See if your impact consistency is better with one or the other.
What if you need grips smaller than regular?
Not any great way to replicate that. You can make a standard rubber grip play smaller by stretching it an extra 3/4 inch down during install.
Do your hands control the grip? Or does the grip control your hands? If your hands are on the small side, try an undersized (or junior) grip, and get control of the club..
Ever try hockey grip tape?
Have not. Assume it's close to other sports handle tapes??
@@EFGMC I just know hockey... the grip tape sounds perfect for what you are doing. It's cheap too.
Clever!
Appreciate it!
Why would you not use Tennis Grip Tape, to do the test, then you should be able to hit full shots until the tape wears out?
That's a good option.
Anything past 3 wraps, grip gets too squishy and it's better to go next size up.
Wouldn’t it depend on how one grips the handle? Those who correctly grip in the fingers vs those who grip in the palm. Maybe should’ve made that a point right off.
I go over numerous measurement methods in different videos but it really all comes down to comfort and feel.
👍

It’s all personal preference lol. I’ve seen women use oversized and men’s use undersized(ladies) even with big hands hahaha. It’s all on what YOU LIKE not on what anyone else likes. There is a chart to base off but it’s all personal preference haha
Exactly..it's all preference and what works the best for you.
@@ClickClickDirt exactly
Why didn't you put a length of tape straight down the grip, instead of trying to wind it round in a spiral and making all those ugly wrinkles??
Seems no one likes the standard
Gonna ruin every grip you have trying this bs...
Pay the $10 for a grip and learn to do it yourself and just try the damn grip...
It's the only way you'll know...
