You actually ended up putting me on BlazBlue entropy effect, but I'm curious if you ever came back to it? The full game is out and they made a lot of changes from early access (the one I don't like is how they changed the entropy system) and for some reason they gave the game like 3 endings. The core loop is still the same and gets really fun
Street of Rogue. It's a sandbox-roguelike game where your objective is to topple down the mayor. Each floor has a different environment and theme, you can do many different ways to finish the objective. It's an underrated game. Bop ost too.
I hope roboquest sales go up because of you. I have been recommending it to my friends since the pre-alpha, and I absolutely love where the game ended up.
Can someone explain y its aroguelike. Aren't the l3feos the same each time with the only change being items. That just seems more like a typical level based game
Do I care about roguelikes? No Do I want to look at the gameplay to expand my gaming palette? No Do I absolutely enjoy Skooch’s videos regardless of what it is? Hell yeah
Favorite part of roguelikes is getting to know them and then throwing on an unholy amount of mods that quadruples the amount of content and squares the silliness.
I discovered you because of league like 3 years ago, but I stayed here not because your content was for league, but because i loved the way you make your videos, your energy and your humour it's so good man, I wish you the best, thank you for the new content ❤
I would say they are for casuals. Rogelikes in general are obscure in a world of Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, and any games not BOI, Gungeon, and Dead Cells are obscure imo
The thing with neon abyss having little variety is exactly why i like it, its not everyones cup of tea, but its nice to have a game you can just boot up and mindlessly play after a long day.
yea i feel like everygame on here has already made a fair amount of rounds (maybe besides spiritfall and roboquest) probably because most "obscure" rougelikes are either executed badly or still being worked on
Fab! Great picks and reasoning and the wish to talk about them is relatable;o) I mostly factor in, if I the mix of mechanics works for me, feels engaging and longevity/do I like to return for some Sisyphosian action. Tend to cross-binge. Suggestions for obstruse over obtuse: - Revita gave me what I'd wanted from Neon Abyss - Pesticide not required: Atomicrops but condensed and bullet heaven - RAD: isometric Beatemup as an egglaying punk - Bomblinger: Bomberman in a Wild West setting - Ftaghn: Ring of Pain goes Lovecraft - Lore of Hex and Hexguardian: Tower defense on hex grid - Cavity busters: grosser TBoI - Boyfriend Dungeon: Persona meets SoulEater - Kingdom Eightees and Thronefall - Magi-craft, Neophyte, Noita, Magicka 2, sneakily grouped;o) Bio-Prototype? The tiermatrix imo doesn't add to the ranking with small entry no. and don't refrain from replacement lists, dosed divisiveness drapes discord, engage-/enragement;o) Cheers
i would also very much recommend barony and loop hero, the former is a 3d dungeon crawler with a leveling system and a bunch of secrets and ways to minmax and the other is a cool relaxing autofighter where you build a map around your character to affect the run
Another amazing video! Thanks for all the infos you bring in, it might be not your main focus, but I'd love to see a JRPG or RPG version of these Roguelikes videos.
What I feel is the biggest problem of Neon Abyss is that it doesnt give you any reason to go for the end bosses after you defeat them once because the effort to get to them isnt worth it. To get to one of the last areas you have to fill the purple/red bar in bottom right twice for the same colour to get the Athena or Ares token. The purple bar fills out if you clear rooms without taking damage or interacting with purple things (doors, chests, big crystals) that require those small purple crystals to use and looses progress when getting hit, and the red bar fills by taking damage once per room and hitting purple things to make them turn red and damage you for using them. The problems? To even start filling the bar you need to interact with one of the purple/red things to determine which type the bar is meaning you can waste an entire floor of progress because the game decided to spawn them in the last room of a floor. Then theres a problem with the purple things turning red from ANY HIT THEY TAKE, you could be in a long room and an enemy OFFSCREEN could hit a purple chest and lock out of valueable bar progress when you trying going for Athena. And even after going through all that work of trying to maintain the bar, getting to the final area to fight Athena or Ares and beat them...all you get for that is a checkmark for that character and thats it, if you beat them once theres no reason to go there again besides wanting to be a completionist, but is fully completing a game with an achivement that wants you to stand around afk in the menu for 30 uninterruped minutes really worth it? Also really hoping you make it a series Skooch
Early on in the games life getting the coins was random. They updated it to be two rooms. I loved neon abyss but getting to curses Athena or ares makes me want to bash my head into a wall
as another roguelike enthusiast i knew and played most of these, but not spiritfall and ravenswatch, and now you got me really interested in them. also, you should absolutely check Slice and Dice, Into the Breach, Tiny rogues out and Shogun Showdown . But beware, you might end up with hundreds of hours into into the breach lmao. great vid skooch
Roguelike recs: Heroes of Hammerwatch (might be a bit too simple, but I loved this game especially with a party of like 10). Cult of the Lamb has a lot of roguelike elements, but is also a management game where the management affects your runs so maybe not exactly a roguelike, but I think you'd make a great video about it. PlateUp! is Overcooked if Overcooked was a roguelike. It's fairly simple, but amazing when you actually get sweaty trying to survive for longer with friends. Returnal is a pretty good coop third person shooter with lots of movement, it's a very "Sony" game with a very different storyline and aesthetic. And Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate, a chess rogue like, but with guns. No, I will not elaborate further.
going under! made by the folks who recently came out with another crab's treasure (crab souls), the conceit is about working for a startup and battling other failed startups with makeshift weapons. the models can get glitchy, but i've sunk almost as many hours into it as hades i and ii, and am a huge fan of peglin as well. also, nice rhythm heaven bg music!
skooch . i have been a pretty long time subscriber, and did watch your vids in a long time tho and DAAAAAAAMN did you put on some muscle !! good for you my man !
One thing to see a vid by the goat Skooch, another thing to see him mention Brotato AND Rounds, easily both of my favorite rogue-likes, even if one is simplistic and the other isnt really a roguelike shame to hear about Neon Abyss though, played that a bit and had fun with it, but didn’t get to the point where i realized it had no depth to it. Oh well, excited to check out the other roguelikes
One I've found stupid fun to play is Crab Champions - its more similar to RoboQuest - fast paced quake like roguelike shooter - while the level variety leaves a lot to be desired, just the sheer carnage you can inflict on crabs with the right upgrades and seeing numbers skyrocket is stupid fun Ak-xolotl is also an adorable Enter the Gungeon-like with you building your own character to take into the run and a lot of cute homages to other games
I don't know if it's obscure but you should really try Voidigo, very fun rogue-like/lite and one of my favorite. Plus the ambience and look of it is fantastic.
I would love to see this as a series, since roguelikes are one of my favorite genres. BUT WAIT SKOOCH you must try Vagante. It is a roguelike that is insanely underrated that I have been playing for years. It has 2D platforming, in-depth skill trees that make huge impacts based on what you choose each run, and a decent item list that can fundamentally change how you play. There are up to 6 classes if you count the random class which gives you a random body from one of the other classes and mixes their skill trees to give you a random set of possible perks. AND to top it off there is co-op up to 4 players. It is brutal but fair, has a steep learning curve but is still fun, and a surprising amount of depth that has kept me coming back to it since it's release in 2018 in search of unlocking the true ending. The fact that is has less than 4000 reviews on steam is a travesty and I hope you can give it a shot because I think you will enjoy. Thanks for the videos :D
So happy people are aware of Roboquest. The game was fun, but similar to Neon Abyss, it did NOT have much depth in early access. Yet the devs kept devving. Added more stages, an endgame, mini-maps, more guns, and even completely rebuilt the passive perks and items systems to go from bland stat boosts to really interesting and in depth build opportunities.
Roboquest is really one of the best games I have played recently. Also one of the few titles where I really wanted to get all achievements just because it was so good. Its especially great in coop
I’m so happy to see Spiritfall get the recognition it deserves, I picked it up with the 1.0 release after seeing the amazing animated trailer and I absolutely love the game, just about 100 hours packed into it and 100% the achievements and it’s still not getting stale, the weapons are so much fun with all the unique combos via spirit blessings and enchantment, or the beautiful visuals and ESPECIALLY THAT OST, It has no right being so catchy
Oh skooch, you have blessed me once again 😂 love this channel. So glad you moved on from asking if you could talk about things and just started yappin.
Funnily enough, every issue you have with Neon Abyss is (at least in my opinion) absent from the best game of that style, Revita. Would definitely recommend giving it a shot! Took a couple runs to click but the boss and enemy designs keep it really fast-paced. Would also recommend Gunfire Reborn to anyone who likes Robo Quest. It's been around for much longer and has some incredibly challenging difficulty scaling (think eclipse difficulties from risk of rain 2)
your should try risk of rain 2 with the boys, its one of the best third person shooter roguelikes out there, and im speaking of experience(i have 300 hours help.)
A roguelike I thought I would never get into is Crab Champions. I saw it on sale, bought it and genuinely sunk almost 30 hours in it in one week (its like $10 full price). Ever since I started playing it, they have updated it so many times and it has a huge roadmap for what's to come - that and it also has original music by Noisestorm who made Crab Rave so its the only roguelike I don't have Spotify on whilst playing.
I gotta recommend Picayune Dreams, it's also a "vampire survivor like" or "bullet heaven" but it also does a lot more interesting stuff with the concept.
I used to be obsessed with league and watch your old videos all the time, and than I quit a bit before you did, and the funny thing is i recently go SUPER into rouge likes and just figured out your making video about them now!
you should deffo do more vids like this, the indie industry is always in need of more advertisement and there are a lot of games out there that are really good but the developers just dont have enough money to advertise their games properly
We knew you had taste Skooch, but you cooked here! I have played all of these except Neon Abyss (Reviews really pushed me away) and agree with your takes 100%. Stoked you gave Robo Quest a shout because it deserves so much more love and praise for how great it is. My Recommendation to you and all the saucy folks here in the comments is Tiny Rogues. Bullethell esque classbased roguelite with so much charm, player freedom with builds, and the runs usually last only about 30 minutes. Their latest update added multiple new classes, a revamped progression system, more augments to make your runs more difficult but rewarding, and of course weapons. Seriously guys it is like $6 on steam and worth every penny and more. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have watching it become better and better over the last year.
Against the storm is a city builder rouge-like. Great even if you have no experience with the genre. One step from eden. Is a rouge like card-action-battle game inspired by the unique combat from megaman battlenetwork
Skooch I love your videos and I love rouge likes even more. I have to admit that I either own or played all mentioned Games.. it's crazy how many games I played and searched in this Genre. I absolutely love this Genre. Keep up your amazing work and much love 💕 you're the kind of person I'd love to have a gaming session into the morning, forgetting all the time 😂
Love the list and thanks for some recommendations. I think the other OG roguelikes that u should play is Definity *Risk of Rain Returns* & *Risk of rain 2*. The other one would be *Enter the gungeon*, If i could go back in time to play this all over again i would honestly. *Giftlands* card roguelike, *Dead Cells*, *Bounty of One* i would say is another version of Brotato that i loved. I loved *Gunfire Reborn* more then RoboQuest that game was really fun . *Death Must die* and *Wizard of legend* is what im currently playing and both are amazing. Honestly too many roguelikes to say
I recommend Oblivion Override, the translation may be broken sometimes and the variety of levels is a bit bland but the amazing gameplay and the amount of playstyles you can have carries it (and the fact that progressing through difficulties makes the the enemies and bosses harder in a fun way)
Moonlighter. It’s by no means obscure but seems to fade in and out of relevancy. Made by the beloved Digital Sun, it has a beautiful aesthetic and world. Doubled on with a dungeon crawler experience, you also run a shop where you sell your wares from the dungeon. This game has gorgeous visual and FANTASTIC music. It’s a bit of a slow grind in term of having to farm pretty hard for higher grade gear but it’s amazing.
Recently bought Ravenswatch because I loved Curse of the Dead Gods as a primarily solo player. It’s really good. RoboQuest also on my list, glad to hear it’s good too.
Make it a series! I might disagree with some of your assessments, but the rationale behind how you rated them I can understand. I'm not that deep into roguelikes/roguelites, but I've played a couple here and there (Ravenswatch, Peglin, and Brotato being the most relevant to this video), and would like to hear some opinions of some of the older ones like Curse of the Dead Gods.
Love the video! My only issue (which is very small and doesn’t impact the video significantly enough to even be considered a minor problem) is that you don’t provide a link to a single game you mentioned. Other than that, you have helped me expand my games in a fun way! Keep it up Skooch!!
for me brotato is hand down the best survivor like out there with soulstone survivor. It's typically a game that permit you to try hard (road to D5 every character), or launch a run during your lunch break at work. it fit every type of players. And the modding community made godly mods doubling the base number of character.
ngl, when i heard you describe the gameplay loop of Ravenswatch, i thought "this guy just described Kirby air ride: city trial again didn't he?" anyways looks very cool!
I HIGHLY recommend trying Astral Ascent and/or Blazblue Entropy Effect. Both are similar to Dead Cells, with Astral Ascent being a little closer to Wizard of Legend and BBEE being closer to Rogue Legacy.
Having played Ravenswatch and bought it for a friend months ago (when it was only one stage). I liked it just fine, my friend meanwhile called it absolutely clunky and unpolished and according to her it was more "early alpha" than early access.
As a videogame connoisseur, idk if you have covered these before but here is a list, some of them are more rogueliky than others: Death Must Die Slice & Dice Tiny Rogues Magicraft Dungreed Warm Snow Blade Assault Shogun Showdown Nightmare: The Lunatic Skul: The Hero Slayer Revita The Crackpet Show Voidigo Friends vs Friends Barony Backpack Hero Streets of Rogue Tyrant's Blessing Boyfriend Dungeon One Step From Eden Ember Knights Children of Morta Beneath Oresa Astral Ascent Deadlink Stone Shard Have a Nice Death Inkbound Gunfire Reborn Returnal Undermine Wizard of Legend And some that are not out yet: Ruindog Aethermancer Streets of Rogue 2 Wizard of Legend 2 Undermine 2 Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core
If you plan on playing Brotato on the phone, dont bother with the base version, go straight for the premium version, it isnt that expensive but so much better.
Got some really cool recommendations from this vid so thank you. To anyone seeing this, I think Neon Abyss (while not perfect) is quite fun (I'm a switch player too) and worth looking into. I wouldnt personally put it lower than B. Im definitely going to check out Rounds and Spiritfall
Absolutely make this a series, and check out Slay The Minotaur! its a little rough around the edges, and It doesn't have the strongest combat system. BUT it has some incredibly cool ideas and is only a few dollars.
Skooch, PLEASE play Skul the Hero Slayer. It is my all-time favorite roguelike. It's a 2d platformer and you play a skeleton, and each "skull" gives different powers. I'm absolutely addicted to this game and recommend it to anyone with any spec of interest in roguelike games.
I would love to see more of this, and also see what you think about(though, some of these aren't "obscure" per say.): Soulstone Survivors Going Under Gunfire Reborn PlateUp! DRG: Survivor
Please recommend me more Roguelikes. I need something to do between now and Hades 2.
Cogmind.
*Torture Thyself.*
Inkbound is really good
Slice and Dice is a blast. Spelunky 1 and 2 are classics.
Just for curiosity, is Roboquest made by the same devs that made Gunfire Reborn? Cause it reminds me quite a bit of that.
@@aureliodeprimus8018 no, it’s made by a French developer team called RyseUp Studios
Can someone explain y its aroguelike. Aren't the l3feos the same each time with the only change being items. That just seems more like a typical level based game
@@joeycohen7533the levels carry the same name, but the map layout is random
by your logic Super Mario Bros. is a roguelike.
I've got 140 hours since the original EA release. It's wonderful
Do I care about roguelikes? No
Do I want to look at the gameplay to expand my gaming palette? No
Do I absolutely enjoy Skooch’s videos regardless of what it is? Hell yeah
you do care about fun games
in before rougeheads get on your ass for this
Bold take to be fair, but a based skooch fan regardless
Join the cult of roguelikes my friend only then will you reach the light
perfect, make this a series heck yea
Perfect, I was just looking for more rougelikes!
Favorite part of roguelikes is getting to know them and then throwing on an unholy amount of mods that quadruples the amount of content and squares the silliness.
risk of rain 2 moment lol. I really wish roboquest and gunfire reborn had even a quarter of the amount of content mods
What roguelikes do you do this with?
I discovered you because of league like 3 years ago, but I stayed here not because your content was for league, but because i loved the way you make your videos, your energy and your humour it's so good man, I wish you the best, thank you for the new content ❤

"Like Hades and Smash Bros smashed bros and had some bros" 😂😂
Great video Skooch, I actually wishlisted a couple of these!
"i reviewed 10 obscure roguelikes"
reviews very well known rogue likes:
yea i feel like everygame on here has already made a fair amount of rounds (maybe besides spiritfall and roboquest)
probably because most "obscure" rougelikes are either executed badly or still being worked on
Thank you. It's scary how all of the coments are just ignoring that fact.

Make this a series please!
+1 for infinite roguelike content!

One step from eden. Is a rouge like card-action-battle game inspired by the unique combat from megaman battlenetwork
Now do a tradtional roguelike tierlist
Skooch I love your videos and I love rouge likes even more. I have to admit that I either own or played all mentioned Games.. it's crazy how many games I played and searched in this Genre. I absolutely love this Genre. Keep up your amazing work and much love 💕 you're the kind of person I'd love to have a gaming session into the morning, forgetting all the time 😂
Dead estate does also have a very cool horror/puzzle story mode
With neon abyss,
It relies on your progress,
More upgrades,
More variety,
Your options,
Different bosses
Glad you're enjoying peglin skooch :)))
Love the video! My only issue (which is very small and doesn’t impact the video significantly enough to even be considered a minor problem) is that you don’t provide a link to a single game you mentioned. Other than that, you have helped me expand my games in a fun way! Keep it up Skooch!!
Common Roboquest & Brotato Ws
Definitely need you to check out Crab Champions too 🦀
i actually really wanta see what roguelikes you are in love with. As well as the best roguelikes that exist
for me brotato is hand down the best survivor like out there with soulstone survivor. It's typically a game that permit you to try hard (road to D5 every character), or launch a run during your lunch break at work. it fit every type of players. And the modding community made godly mods doubling the base number of character.
im absolutely in love with spiritfall right now, Ive had the game for less than week and have almost 30 hours
Tiny Rogues is worth checking out
make it a series because im always down for game recs
ngl, when i heard you describe the gameplay loop of Ravenswatch, i thought "this guy just described Kirby air ride: city trial again didn't he?" anyways looks very cool!
we can never escape
Make it a series! Please this was great
I HIGHLY recommend trying Astral Ascent and/or Blazblue Entropy Effect. Both are similar to Dead Cells, with Astral Ascent being a little closer to Wizard of Legend and BBEE being closer to Rogue Legacy.
Shotgun King The Final Checkmate is missing on that list, add it, now, it's chess, but you have a gun, nothing more need to be said.
Having played Ravenswatch and bought it for a friend months ago (when it was only one stage). I liked it just fine, my friend meanwhile called it absolutely clunky and unpolished and according to her it was more "early alpha" than early access.
I think that's a pretty good video format! (probably recommended to me because I love balatro, despite being obliterated)
THANK YOU for showing me spiritfall, i will now go ahead and sink 75 hours into this game i never knew i wanted
As a videogame connoisseur, idk if you have covered these before but here is a list, some of them are more rogueliky than others:
Death Must Die
Slice & Dice
Tiny Rogues
Magicraft
Dungreed
Warm Snow
Blade Assault
Shogun Showdown
Nightmare: The Lunatic
Skul: The Hero Slayer
Revita
The Crackpet Show
Voidigo
Friends vs Friends
Barony
Backpack Hero
Streets of Rogue
Tyrant's Blessing
Boyfriend Dungeon
One Step From Eden
Ember Knights
Children of Morta
Beneath Oresa
Astral Ascent
Deadlink
Stone Shard
Have a Nice Death
Inkbound
Gunfire Reborn
Returnal
Undermine
Wizard of Legend
And some that are not out yet:
Ruindog
Aethermancer
Streets of Rogue 2
Wizard of Legend 2
Undermine 2
Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core
If you plan on playing Brotato on the phone, dont bother with the base version, go straight for the premium version, it isnt that expensive but so much better.
also the phone version is proably better than the pc version.
Make this a series!!
Ravenswatch looks super cool!
do i want this to be a series, yes
Got some really cool recommendations from this vid so thank you. To anyone seeing this, I think Neon Abyss (while not perfect) is quite fun (I'm a switch player too) and worth looking into. I wouldnt personally put it lower than B. Im definitely going to check out Rounds and Spiritfall
I would def look into Picayune Dreams, its vampire survivors, touhou bosses and a weird story mixed together with a strong breakcore aestetic
I would love to see more of this, and also see what you think about(though, some of these aren't "obscure" per say.):
Soulstone Survivors
Going Under
Gunfire Reborn
PlateUp!
DRG: Survivor
its kinda funny. I was playing ravenswatch while having this video in the background, by pure coincidence
Here to do my duty "Make it a series" 😤
I love neon abyss, it definitely has more depth than you'd think at first try. I was very skeptical of it at first too.
