the way you're describing it makes it sound like it shares a lot of elements with deckbuilder rougelikes, where a lot of the exitement comes from finding interesting and powerful synergies between a bunch of mechanics interacting with eachother. Finding a cursed relic that synergizes with the rest of your build perfectly in this game is probably the best that exact rush of excitement you're talking about gets in any roguelike I've played.

I think Dead Cells actually does roguelite progression perfectly.
For instance, the health potion upgrade, which increases the amount of potion charges you can heal from during stages, goes up from just 1 charge to 4 total. This is a HUGE upgrade and is really good because you can refill your health bar whenever you take a huge hit.
Sounds broken? It's great, until you beat the first difficulty, and suddenly you can't completely refill your health flask between each stage, and as you go up in difficulty, eventually you cannot refill your health flask AT ALL during a run, leaving you with 4 charges to get you through 6 stages and 3 bosses where anything can go wrong.
And that's where it forces you to improve as a player, because you can't fall back on your health to get you out of bad situations, and are significantly more punished for mistakes.
Giving a player this kind of strong resource, but then taking it away in this fashion as they progress to harder difficulties, is honestly the direction I hope Wizard of Legend 2 takes, since it's targeting more tangible roguelite progression than just unlocking new spells.

The original Wizard of Legend was (If I have my facts straight) made by two people. They were both 18 year old 'kids' when they made the game, and got it published via Humble Bundle.
Now Humble Bundle, who I'm guessing owns the IP and rights to WoL, has brought in an entirely new dev team to make the sequel.

Around 5:42 is where his reason for saying so is clarified: very few roguelikes/rogue-lites have any replayability, which kind of defeats the point; they're **supposed** to be replayed, so if you can't keep replaying them, the focus of the game probably isn't the roguelike aspect of it.
I personally think Hades falls into that category. Having sank hours into it only to discover the weapon upgrades were abysmal (as in, didn't change much), I was pretty disappointed tbh. Not saying Hades is bad overall, but imo it gets very repetitive very quickly as there is almost no variety, even with the weapon upgrades and boons. That's why I stopped playing it.
It's ofc mostly subjective but one objective thing is that Hades clearly has more focus on story than gameplay variety, and to some people such as myself, that just isn't my thing.

Other rogue likes expect you to optimize. Noita expects you to snap the game mechanics in half so things can get serious. Every impassable barrier in the game is a test to see if you can assemble something clever or broken enough to pass it anyway and find another challenge.
And that's really it. There's no absolute rule in the game. There are a lot of hard rules, but if you know what you're doing and get the right stuff, you can break every last one. (Heck, the current WR speed run involves straight-up stealing a giant meticulously created spell from a previous run using an interaction that would be considered a bug if it didn't fit the lore so well).

Isn't that a false dichotomy? Just because a roguelite has lasting progression doesn't mean that it can't/doesn't force you to try different things. It's just that a lot of the popular roguelites don't go as hard into synergies as some roguelikes do. I mean sure the progression can help you beat the game, but it rarely(at least when done well) is enough to just allow you to win without actually experimenting with builds. I mean dead cells is like one of the easiest examples of a roguelite that basically forces you (or at least heavily incentivizes) experimentation

    • @jonaut5705
      @jonaut5705 4 месяца назад +2

well, that's one interpretation, there are so goddamn many. Another big one is that roguelikes have to be turn based, for example. There's no real consensus on which is which, so the terms are generally interchangeable, with the exception being that roguelikes are generally a little closer to the actual core roguelike games (rogue, ADOM, nethack etc.), and roguelites are a little farther, usually being other concepts with some roguelike concepts thrown in like permadeath or procedural generation. but also sometimes the turn based ones are called traditional roguelikes, it's just really convoluted and it's not really worth trying to separate them for most purposes

    • @deebun2015
      @deebun2015 4 месяца назад +2

Aren't roguelikes supposed to be grid based dungeon crawlers? You know... like Rogue, games like CDDA, Caves of Qud and Unreal world are all DIRECTLY inspired by Rogue, hence Rogue-"LIKE". Roguelite should be used as a broad term for games that has similarities to Rogue (Procedural generation and/or Permadeath), it'd be so dumb to improperly use the name of an ACTUAL genre just to differentiate a Roguelite that has Meta-Progression as opposed to one that has none.
If that mindset was applied to ALL genre, then Minecraft would be a hack and slash, beat em' up game. I'm fine with terms and genres changing meaning over time (Like RPGs) but this one absolutely makes no sense and makes it super hard to mention Roguelike games, even the term "Traditional roguelike" is being used for Roguelite games SIMPLY because some are turn based and have some minor amount of Permadeath/Randomness.

There's no better roguelike experience than wizard of legend with the pre run option to cycle your spells every few times you use them. It's an experience I wish other roguelikes would have. Having to figure out what you have and how it works on the fly constantly for all your spells is just amazing and if you ever have a truly horrible line up, it'll get swapped out pretty quickly.
The game does IMO have one real issue though and that is the camera is just slightly too zoomed in making it really easy to get tagged by off screen enemies. It can't really afford to zoom out much more either so I don't know the optimal solution but it became more and more of a nuisance the better I got at the game and the more challenging things I tried to do.
I hope the sequel ends up well even if it has some concerning stuff around it's development (different dev, same publisher, new artstyle). Still, I very much hope for the best for it.

At 3:50 you talk about how the first boss's pattern is just "dodge, dodge, dodge then strike, then repeat".. what really got me by surprise was how the bosses scaled according to the level you were at. The fire boss at the end of first stage only does that minor pattern but if you see her at the end of second stage she does something else and they even use the spells you can get as arcana cards; which makes it so that even if you are seeing them using a move for the first time if you've used that arcana before you know what to expect from the visual cues alone. This game is simply clever in its design.
edit: lol a second later in the video you talk about the second part of what I love about boss design in this game and yeah, it deserves the praise.

One roguelite I really recommend is Spelunky (and Spelunky 2); the game is hard, but it's grounded: you have a weapon/tool slot, a backpack slot, and then extra items on top of ropes and bombs, that's it, the other items mostly just give a few minor buffs like extra mobility etc, but typically not anything you'd need to beat the game.
The "roguelite" part comes from the shortcut system: everytime you unlock a new world, you unlock a shortcut, which gives you a skip to that level, however, to unlock it, you must do multiple runs and then carry the right items to give to the npc that gives shortcuts to even unlock a single shortcut, let alone the harder ones that appear later on.
However, to balance this out, to get the true ending/secret worlds of both games, you must get specific items placed into each world, which means you cannot use shortcuts to cheese it, but rest assured these items have guaranteed spawns and are pretty easy to find. (The game also isn't too long if you're speeding through it so it wont take you 4 hours or something to get all these items in a run).
The reason why the game is good is because it's almost entirely skill: every enemy/trap is telegraphed, so you know how to fight them. So as the runs go on, the game doesn't become easier, you just become better. Yes you will still die due to an attack knocking you into a trap or you blowing yourself up, but it's also how the game balances you learning everything: there's a certain layer of chaos that adds replayability.
There's also the part where the map is destructible (mostly due to explosions), which means you can use things like bombs in creative ways (one of the notable ones being in spelunky 2 where people found out you could skip the use of a "self revive item" needed to get the true ending, allowing you to keep it for yourself).

See the other thing about wizard of legend is that it has made me despise other games with magic systems because wizard of legends just feels like everything I want in one in the most perfect sense, not only are you learning how spells work and what goes well together for your build but it truly will become “your build” because your experience might never be the same as someone else’s with the game, it makes it feel like I’m actually looking and learning wonderful tricks myself in a certain manner whereas other games with magic have a more restricted system, a mage might only have certain spells it’s able to use or unlock and that’s it, or it feels restricted by mana which takes away the magic from the magic in a certain manner of speaking sometimes

The biggest downside the genre of Roguelite has it that everyone seems to mix up the name with Roguelike. You can't even distinguish this on steam or other sites, they all see them as the same. Even games that notoriously don't have any unlocks will show up when you list for roguelites. Meanwhile, the difference is so goddamn simple it really makes me angry that people get this wrong all the time.

    • @EljayIsHere
      @EljayIsHere  4 месяца назад +1

Yeah it’s rough, most of the comments who have been negative or disagreeing with me on this video seem like they simply don’t understand the difference.
I didn’t think I’d need to explain the difference in this, but apparently I should’ve.
Wizard of legend has unlocks and progression so it’s a roguelite, but the progression doesn’t make you scale endlessly or unfairly, it’s closer to a roguelike in how you start each run.
I think that’s why I loved it, a sense of progression without slowly becoming unbeatable like Hades and cult of the lamb.
If I want a skill game, I go for a game like Barony or WoL, if I want to feel overpowered, Hades or Loop Hero.

    • @Nerex7
      @Nerex7 4 месяца назад

@@EljayIsHere Exactly, Hades is a good example for a Roguelite, you really come back stronger and you progress, never starting in the same spot.
I've seen many people call Isaac a roguelite because you unlock other characters, but even then you always start at the same point without anything getting progressively better for the characters.
Biggest issue really is that it becomes incredibly annoying to find new games. I recently bought Domekeeper because friends told me it was a Roguelite...it wasn't. It's a neat game but I don't have any drive in trial and error runs or to hone my skill into infinity. Those things usually turn me off those games.

Have you played Enter The Gungeon before? I’m surprised I haven’t seen it mentioned here in the comments yet. It’s definitely not as much of a “deckbuilder” roguelike as the items you get in runs are more random, but that randomness adds to the replayability a lot. The progression is definitely slow at first, but there’s still so much in the game. The main turnoff is probably the difficulty when first getting into it, but it’s really fun to learn how to predict attacks and get better at dodging everything. I’ve done almost everything in the game, and still occasionally go back to do runs and challenge myself.

Warm Snow has similar in-run diversity, you might like that one. You can beat the game on a fresh save too (might need to have played before, but it’s very doable).
The first difficulty is balanced around having nothing, and all the higher difficulties are balanced by giving you much more complicated upgrades to keep you interested.
There’s around 16 classes in the game, and they’re all unique and viable without needing to play a specific “meta” build. (E.g., Even effect-specialised classes like the poison class can actively support about a dozen cool builds that have nothing to do with poison.)
Every item can be put into one of four inventory slots, and the effect completely changes depending on where it is. I have tried over 300 unique builds at this point for sure (with a theme and a cool payoff) and they were all really satisfying. You’ll feel heavily rewarded for having fun, theory crafting ideas and experimenting with what you find 👨‍🔬👍

I think that Enter The Gungeon is a good example too. I mean, the difference between runs are new weapons and items, but the stats are always the same on every character. It keeps the difficulty even with great weapons, the system of synergies and the floors and bosses changes the game in every round. Also, the game encourages skill improvement of the the player giving rewards when you take no hit with a boss and other situations. The collectables like keys, blanks or money are generally rare, so you have to be strategic on what to use on a certain moment.
I know some combinations of weapons and items are super powerful, but the difficulty of the game is always high so you can't be too relaxed. For me, one of the best games I've played.

Co-op can be EXTREMELY broken with the right set up.
My friend likes to take the cloak Fall, which allows you to regen health after several seconds of taking no damage, but reduces your max HP to 100, which can’t be increased.
Then, he takes the relic Limited Edition Robe which makes it so you can’t take more than 10% of your health in damage from a hit.
Finally, I grab the relic Wallet of Vigor, which allows you to make purchase at shops with your health, and then I give that to him.
Sure, I start the run a relic down, but as soon as we find a shop, we can buy out every relic for 10 HP per relic, which he gets back within seconds. He can also get whatever spells he wants after I’ve used whatever gold we got to get mine instead of us having to decide who gets the spell they want from the arcana shop. Everything becomes free.
Oh, and if you find the Supply Crate, which instantly restocks anything in the relic and arcana shop, then you’re set for life.
We usually try to grind for relics that can stack into the same slot and relics that boost a stat the more relics you have and put all that stuff on me to get stat boosts that were almost certainly never intended.

You only equip one relic with little to no impact on your build and with the little to no healing, the overwhelming amount of enemies and the fact that you need to hit 20 times a regular enemy to beat it while they can destroy you at the slightest mistake. Roguelites are meant to be casual, you play for thirty minutes for one or two runs and then go to do something else. I always ran with the cloak that lowers your hp to 100 and gives you health regen after a few seconds of taking no damage and I pair it with the relic that makes all damage you take have a hard cap of 10% your max hp. It makes survival significantly easier and once I found the combo it was hard to justify not using it. Also it does lose a bit of replayability over time once you get most of the void arcana.

turns out, if you play slow rougelites, theyre slow. play for example enter the dungeon, slay the spire, dead cells, binding of Isaac, noita or any of a million roguelites that give you many options, and they wont be repetitive

There is only one thing that i feel you forgot to mention: The absolute lack of Invincibilty frames, if you get hit in this game you dont get a short window where you cant be damaged by anything else, the enemy will combo you away if you are not carefull!

i really like the extremely wide arsenal, but the repetitiveness of combat encounters killed any enjoyment for me.
i sort of feel like every combat encounter in a single level feels really the same and i just end up spamming a single combo, with only variable being the rhythm of my dodges.
i hope they fix that in the sequel, because the concept is sick

Wizard of legend is a bullet hell roguelike with how the bosses are designed. It makes me want to try Furi, which I haven’t yet

Felt so triggered in the beginning..
Tbh, the video clearly shows why there are roguelikes and why there are roguelites. Everyone wants to play games different, i guess. I personally like both. Sometimes i just want to chill with meta progression, sometimes i want to grind.
Also the game reminds me of noita, but i see that name written all over in the comments, should not come as a surprise :D
Have you touched that game already as many comments recommended? And if yes, what was your experience like?

HOLY CRAP NOITA IS SO HARD HAHAHA
I've been playing it for 3 days straight and I cannot for the life of me get a decent wand, I am watching tutorial after tutorial of early game wands after 22 - 25 runs that won't get past Hisi base.
I got chainsaw ONCE to speed up a spell and died to a worm .... that I didn't even know could exist?!
I am losing my mind, I hate it, it sucks BUT I CAN'T STOP AHHHHHH

Well.... I fucked up. I thought I'd get a rogue-like for me and my BF to play after work. Now our standards are way too god damn high after 60+ hours of grinding Wizards of Legends. xD

I'd say that's a big part of the reason i generally prefer roguelikes to roguelites. I love the genre because I don't feel like i have to hold anything back between runs. If I die, nothing was lost, and I gain nothing from holding onto items.

Yeah but does it really matter if you don't replay a roguelike after you've gotten 100 hours out of it? Honestly most roguelikes are indie games for $20 and by the time the meta-progression is over you've gotten your money's worth.

Meh, I felt like the potential for Wizard of Legend could have been so much greater, if the difficulty wasn't so absurd.. It falls in that category of Rogue-lites where the "upgrades" were just unlockables, and the gameplay itself was so RNG, that you pretty much had to beat the game without taking a single point of damage, or you had no change against the final 2 bosses. I also hated how if you played Co-Op, you had to kill each other, but it wouldn't bother to heal you after the match, which made the fight utterly redundant. Many times I would just let my friend kill me, cause it was waste, and I didn't want them to rage leave my house over an item we didn't get to use for more then a few minutes.

Kinda funny how you stumbled upon wizard of legend after I played it till I moved on.
I agree with most of your points especially when you were saying you were lying.
It is an extremely balanced game to a t and takes the feel of potentially dying and starting from nothing very seriously.
I love that you love this game. Finding extreme satisfaction from it until ya need to move on.

Play Astral Ascent. That is Roguelike/Roguelite of 2023 and its still going strong with their new updates for all of 2024. Wizard of Legend was my favorite until I found out about Astral Ascent. The combat is top tier, the music is great, the characters & enemies are great, the lore is very good and more. Astral Ascent, Wizard of Legend and Hades are my top 3. There's also amazing ones like Blazblue Entropy Effect, Realm of Ink, Warm Snow, Enter the Gungeon, Swordcery, The Awakener Forgotten Oath and multiple others that are hidden gems or have something really unique about them.

Played it many, many times over the course of 2 or 3 years on my Xbox one. Fantastic game, coop play is insanely fun to do too since you can build to have the role diversity of melee/range, tank/dps etc although it is important to note the camera was pretty annoying to work with (could’ve changed by now). Highly recommend, even as just a game you play in bursts occasionally throughout a year.

I was obsessed with this game when it came out, freaking banger. I spent multiple hours trying different card and relic combos and capes just to see what happened.
I don't usually like rogue likes or lites, but this one was super fun for me.

if you liked wizard of legent, try Noita I guarantee you will die a lot before getting it, but once it clicks it clicks. there is literally near infinite content so keep it on your radar
