I am transported back to late 1983. Moved to Toronto earlier that summer. Discovered an amazing radio 📻 called: cfny 102.1 - and one night this track came on very late. Cold November night and this track. Loved the track straight away. The lyrics were so provocative. Moscow to Cologne. Would I ever get to go to either? 🤔 Fell in love with Tom’s music eternally. Couldn’t get enough of him. Then life happens and as I meandered my way decade after decade … 36 years later … there I am arriving via Deutsch Bahn from Bruxelles, Belgium - Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Railway Station 🚉). It was surreal, and this song 🎧 was playing in my head. Once I got settled into my hotel, I wandered along the Rhine, and crossed one of the main bridges there, and marvelled at the Cologne Cathedral lit up spectacularly. Returned to my hotel room, and you bet I played THIS 👆track. Who knew? 1983 - 2019. Wonderful memories. ☺️
Together with Blue Nile’s Tinseltown in the Rain.. This song always takes me back to that wonderful 80’s melancholy. It was an attumn night in the heartland of the european low lands. When life seemed more simple but complex enough to drawn into a tune like this..
I first heard this during a night in 1983, staying in a massive Prague hotel, on a very big, old radio with huge dials, turning it slowly (from Moscow to Cologne, maybe) and catching lots of Czech, Russian, Polish stations and then suddenly this mesmerising, locationally perfect tune. Every time I hear it, I'm back behind the Iron Curtain, empty shops, everything is grey and brown, the street food fantastic, and - it seemed - everyone looking either scared, indifferent or depressed. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Loved Praha then, love it now. Peace, everyone. 🎶
@@jonnyloppy Trying to find a pic (a link) of the hotel on Google Maps, so you can "get it" some more - big, imposing, Russian-esque and then you can add darkness, cold, danger, mistrust and general apathy to the equation. And then, there's Tom, "walking home with nowhere else to go". Just the perfect song for those two Cold War nights and days. 😊 🎶
Went to Prague once. Stayed at a cosy hotel about a 10 minute walk from Wencelas Sq in the midst of winter, my lips were stuck together because of the cold weather.
I was hopelessly in love with a girl in 1984 and this song always reminds me of it. we did never date or it turned never into a relation, but still ...beautiful memories.
Heard it first time tonight while hopping from station to station on the Radio Garden app. I was listening to the "True North" radio station broadcasting from Yellowknife, Canada.
Ik ben 48 jaar oud en nog steeds gek op dit nummer sinds ik het als kind van mijn vader hoorde. Brengt telkens herinneringen boven ❤denk als ik 80 ben het nog steeds luister.
Since hubby and I got rid of TV (just too much crap for too much money every month) we "LISTEN TO THE RADIO"!! This song is a gem, from my tortured 30's.
Crept into the bottom end of the Top 40 for a couple of weeks in late November/early December 1983 (under-rated at only number 39),so that would be about right.
Leuve the bureau in the snow. Catch a tram to onkel po. Early evening ring around the moon. Slip in by the conciërge. By the bikes and up the stairs. Slap the latch and creep into the room throw off your coat pick up the post and put a Coffee on. Lie down on the bed lay back your head. And smoke a cigarette. And listen to the radio. Listen to the radio in the city late tonight. Double feature black and white. Bitter tears and taxi to the klo. Find a bar avoid a fight show your papers be polite. Walking home with nowhere else to go. Throw off your coat pick up my note. And put another Coffee on. Lie down on the bed lay back your head and smoke another cigarette. Listen to the radio listen to the radio atmospherics after dark. Noise and voices from the past across the dial from moscow to cologne interference in the nigtht thousand miles on either side. Stations fading into the unknown. So throw off your coat we'll butter some toast and put another Coffee on. We'll lie down on the bed lay back our heads. Smoke another cigarette Listen to the radio. Listen to the radio. We'll listen to the radio. Listen to the radio. All night long

@ Pantsupvert: What Build is actually saying is that there is too much emphasis on sex selling the music instead of decent songs with proper lyrics and melodies.

You and your hubby is a very nice couple and I wish you the best in life.
A typical song to drink too much coffee and smoking all the time, but there's one problem: I don't smoke.
Living in Berlin in 83 when I first heard this - what better place and time to hear it.
Great Song from a very underrated artist
Cold dark nights and Cold War spring to mind

Peter Gabriel
knowing it's by such a quality writer somehow improves the listening experience! thanks Gosia Soulier
Pukka Orchestra was the first band to release this song in 1983. Tom released his version in 1984
