+Benjamin Woodring Oh come on, it's not *that* bad... My GG lasts a tad over six hours per battery load. So, better than anything Nintendo has released after the GBA...
There is no adapter to plug it into a TV, however Mike Matei from Cinemassacre recently had his Game Gear modded and added an AV out so he could capture footage.
I remember Mike Matei made a video about how he was able to play his modded Game Gear on his TV and actually record the footage for RUclips. Someone should totally mod a Game Gear and send it to Mark.
Lord Karnage - the game gear can be modded for TV out, be nice if you are going to do more reviews. I've thought about doing that with mine eventually.
Fantasy Zone was made in 1986, making it as old as me! It would've been nice if we had this on 3DS Virtual Console, but the 3D upgrade of the arcade version should more than make up for it!
Great to see the Game Gear getting some more exposure on your channel Mark. There is no TV adapter for the game gear as it actually has a higher colour palette than both the Master System & the Mega Drive / Genesis. Easiest way to enjoy it in all it's glory is to play on an emulator
***** Yes it is Game Gear has 4096 colour palette. Genesis has 1536 including shadow and highlight mode. Go do some research before commenting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_game_console_palettes
There was never a television adapter for the Game Gear, but some people have modified their Game Gear boards to output stereo sound, composite, s-video, and even rgb. I'm going to guess that you don't have the same technical expertise to pull off such a mod yourself, but if you're willing to pay, I'm sure contacting one of the number of people who've posted videos of their successful mods on RUclips would probably be willing to help.
No game gear adapter for TV buuuut you can apparently do it via mod, much like the Genesis one you have. Another nice mod is replacing the halogen bulb with an LEDs. Makes the batteries last longer and the screen looks nicer.
*Is there a game gear TV adapter?* There is a hardware mod that you can get that will allow you to play your Game Gear on a TV. There is a guy on the internet who will install it for you, for a nominal fee. I hear it works pretty well, though the picture will still have a huge black box around it.
Mike Matei on inemassacre (AVGN) recently had a Game Gear customized for A/V output b the same guy who made the now-famous "Nintoaster". You should seek that guy out for a modded Game Gear.
As far as I can tell, nobody is offering GG mods, but you can do it yourself. If someone is modding them though, I'd like to know as I just started collecting GG and want to be able to see the games!
I own that game, definitely one of the best on the Game Gear IMO It even has an hidden Invincibility Cheat in it to that's done very similar to the ol' "Konami code"
Very wrong. 1° Fantasy Zone Gear is an exclusive Game Gear title. 2° the best way to play the 1st Fantasy Zone is on Saturn. Oh &, Super Fantasy Zone is not an "other different versions" but a Mega Drive exclusive title & certainly the best Fantasy Zone game released.
Night Driver I was talking about ports of the arcade original, and Super Fantasy Zone is not one, just like FZ Gear. Also I didn't know the Saturn had a version of it, so the best port of the arcade I knew about was the Turbografx 16 version. And another thing, if we count unreleased games, then the best Fantasy Zone game is Space Fantasy Zone for the PC engine Super CD rom 2! (In my opinion at least)
Ruko Michiharu Your comments make no sense, re-read maybe you'll see. & Space Fantasy Zone is kinda bad xD The best Fantasy Zone games = The Arcade / Saturn one & Super Fantasy Zone on Mega Drive. & right after them the Master System exclusive game Fantasy Zone II : Opa-Opa no Namida.
Night Driver I'm sorry but the Turbografx 16 version destroys the Master System version... Also, any game that plays like Space Harrier is better than than any game that plays like Fantasy Zone for me...
Ruko Michiharu lol... 1° Fantasy Zone II doesn't exist on PC Engine ;) Read better what is said :p 2° About the 1st opus, told ya', the Saturn port is easily the best but the ports on NES (The one by Sunsoft); Master System & PC Engine are all good (Just the PCE one could have been better with parallax but it's one of the several flaws of this system = WAY too many games without parallax...). 3° Even though i am a HUGE Space Harrier fan & i love most Fantasy Zone games, Space Fantasy Zone failed to attract my interest. It's not bad but not good either, just average.
I haven't played the Master System version in over 2 decades (the only version of FANTASY ZONE I currently have is the pseudo-2D remake in the SEGA CLASSICS COLLECTION on PS2), but, as far as I can remember, the level graphics in this version look better than in the Master System version however the bosses look worse than they do on the Master System.
I'm sure others have commented on this, but Mike from Cinemassacre got a modded game gear that he can hook up to a TV for recording. Otherwise, I'm sure master system mods must exist, since it is the same hardware...
The master system has a smaller color palette than the game gear. You can run game gear roms on a master system flashcart, but the graphics are messed up and it thinks the pause button is being pressed and unpressed every frame.
Not 100%.. but GG games have a compatible pinout with master system carts... so theoretically someone besides me knowing this, has made an adaptor that combines the "Sega Game Gear Master System Converter" and the "Sega Genesis Power Base Converter" allowing you to play a GG cart on the genesis for TV.
AFAIK there isn't any way to play game gear games on the TV, but Lukemorse1 made his own homebrew adapter... check out his vid.. or i'm sure he'd make you one for a price ;-)
i got a copy for the sega mega drive :) i could send it to u mark for a review. but afterwards u have to send it back to me :D cause it was and still is one of my fav sega mega drive games ;) cheers
Well talk to me I know game gear. There are many options you have. One mod a new screen, I know a guy on ebay that can do that in a snap; making it lcd upgrade and led backlight, with new compacitrs and lition ion battery. Or you can get the sega gen mod and do it that way. Lastly angry video game nerd had his game gear modded with av cords. There's a world of fun out there. Maybe you can try ben hecks channel on youtube he made a portable sega cdx. Let me know what you think. Me myself am modding an atari 5200 to us av cords, cause I wanna play defender the way it was ment to be played on the supa system el Camino style.
***** I've only played Gameboy Advance SP. I meant the game's graphics, looked like games, you find on gameboy advance sp games. Not how it looked on the screen.
There is no adapter to plug it into a TV, however Mike Matei from Cinemassacre recently had his Game Gear modded and added an AV out so he could capture footage.
Impressive. Made it through a whole Game Gear game review without the batteries dying!
Probably set off the breaker a couple of times!
Ziiinnnng

Mark, you forgot to WELCOME us to the Fantasy Zone so we can fly around wearing a kickass sports jacket and then play a game of Lucky Hit afterwards!

Played this game so much. I don't know why, but I did.
i never met a Game Gear screen that didn't make me want to cry...

StigsWorld ***** well....you could always bribe ***** for his SEGA MEGA GEAR!!! ruclips.net/video/FiJL27Jy-rI/видео.html
Someone needs to send Mark a modded Game Gear with one of those TV out boards.
***** I was just thinking the same thing.
Game Gear's color palette not higher than the Genesis, though it is higher than a Master System.
***** Yes it is Game Gear has 4096 colour palette. Genesis has 1536 including shadow and highlight mode. Go do some research before commenting.

Fantasy Zone induced pure nostalgia rush

I liked my gameboy, but man I LOVED my game gear!
Those are some nice graphics and color. I'm impressed. BTW I used to have surf ninjas on game gear. Moto Surf!.

Highway to the Cutie Zone I'll take you right into the Cutie Zone.

Viewing in full screen is strongly not recommended, if you want to save your vision!
My vision went back to 1989 because of this video.
I wish i read that before watching. I now need to try to uncross my eyes :D
This game looks pretty awesome.
As far as I can tell, nobody is offering GG mods, but you can do it yourself. If someone is modding them though, I'd like to know as I just started collecting GG and want to be able to see the games!

Fantasy Zone would actually be a decent name for a barcade - they'd definitely have to make sure to feature the namesake arcade game though.
First time I played Fantasy Zone, it was back around 1991. It was put out by Tengen...on an NES.
Heresy, I know. Still great fun though.
The ideal way to play Fantasy Zone (aside from the arcade and other different versions like Super Fantasy Zone) is on the NEC TurboGrafx 16!
Very wrong.

Fantasy Zone II on the PC Engine rulez!
It's possible to mod the Game Gear and give it a composite A/V out so you can use it with a standard television.
This should be the next 3d classic sega makes for the 3ds.

Ha, that's really cool to know. Sadly funny that the GG has a higher colour palette than the SMS...
This looks vaguely familiar. Wasn't it also on the NES?
nice, nice game, i bought recently!! Nice your voice: "Faaaantasy Zoooone!!! hahaha!!
For some reason i could always tell a game gear game was a game gear by the sound.
Snowman and the koolaid guy lol.
Rerez (i think) made one video with a modified GameGear with TV output, cant remember the video name tough
or maybe cinnemassacre
Not 100%.. but GG games have a compatible pinout with master system carts... so theoretically someone besides me knowing this, has made an adaptor that combines the "Sega Game Gear Master System Converter" and the "Sega Genesis Power Base Converter" allowing you to play a GG cart on the genesis for TV.
mark, i think avgn's buddy mike matei has a game gear modded to have video out
I bet because of 2:39 the video will be taken down and re uploaded later. Master system versions? Hehe little mistake
I believe lukemorse1 made a gamegear console out of a n64 with AV out.
AFAIK there isn't any way to play game gear games on the TV, but Lukemorse1 made his own homebrew adapter... check out his vid.. or i'm sure he'd make you one for a price ;-)
Kirby? Is that you? When did you get a pilot's licence?
Kega fusion will let you emulate game gear games. Would be way easier to record.
i got a copy for the sega mega drive :) i could send it to u mark for a review. but afterwards u have to send it back to me :D
cause it was and still is one of my fav sega mega drive games ;)

i watched this on fullscreen & couldn't even see the game
Mame and Master system are the best versions
it hurts my eyes to see game gear screen capture footage :(
maybe use an emulator? i dunno. better than have all the viewers eyes bleed.
acid trip space shooter... ON a handheld... no thank you.
yay under 10 club also cool game
A nudie sports barcade???
Dibs I call dibs! no one else can do it now it's mine.
Looks like a gameboy game.
***** XD! What does spinach has to do with a gamebot. I don't get the reference.
***** I've only played Gameboy Advance SP. I meant the game's graphics, looked like games, you find on gameboy advance sp games. Not how it looked on the screen.
I find it hysterical when Mark tries to stick the cartidges into the wrong consoles and they don't remotely fit.
Game Gear - Horseshit
There is one... it's called game gear emulator :
There is no adapter to plug it into a TV, however Mike Matei from Cinemassacre recently had his Game Gear modded and added an AV out so he could capture footage.
