Episode Notes:
1. Games captured on the Mega SG.
2. These games need remakes ASAP.
3. I originally did these as separate reviews in 2020 but both performed badly. Now that I have a lot more subscribers I hope they do better and get some more attention. Игры
I always like how he signs off “I _will_ catch you next time”. It’s reassuring.
I feel like he's going to walk in on me stealing stuff.
Keep running, just KEEP RUNNING
Gotta catch em all
*"I'll get you next time, Gadget; next time..."*
Add this to the only certainties you have in life. Definitely the better of the three
I love how these games also took inspiration from Mega Man, with the stage select and having to use different abilities to get past certain parts.
GG shinobi II silent fury, was one of only 2 games for the game gear that I ever owned. Thankfully it was, because it's one of the best games I've ever played. Loved the music, the graphics, and the gameplay so much. I played it so much as a kid that I even put my home consoles aside to make time for it. I was never jealous of my friends that had a Gameboy because of this game 😁
Very nostalgic about the second GG one. Had it growing up and played the hell outta it. Loved the different ninjas and their skills. Figuring out the secrets was a treat
Luckily I own them both. Found em used at the same time.
I remember picking this game up for my Game Gear at Canadian Tire of all places. They had it on clearance and I think I paid $20 for it. It was a GREAT game.
Never know what you're going to find at Can Tire!
My younger brother was the one who got the game gear for one of the holidays (I got a few Genesis games). One of the games he got with it was GG Shinobi II. I remember loving that game so much. We took turns playing the stages and beating the game many times. I also remember being really impressed by the graphics for the machine. Great memories!
I also love the Shinobi series (even The Cyber Shinobi on the Master System), so your review made me want a Game Gear to play these as well
Cyber Shinobi. I remember that game being frustratingly hard (I sucked but could barely beat then helicopter stage) and it was a slower paced Shinobi game. GG Shinobi was one of the best in the series
I played this on my GG back in the day and it blew me away always used to think how was this possible🤯
This was another stellar video. It created such an incredible feeling of nostalgia. Back then, only a few Blockbuster stores had portable game system rentals, so reading reviews was the primary way to see if your investment would be worth it. Even with that, Shinobi had such a great legacy on the Genesis that the first Game Gear entry was a definite purchase. As you noted, the presentation really floored me. Since I wasn’t allowed to play my Genesis for more than an hr after finishing home work, playing Shinobi on the Game Gear didn’t feel like a lower experience. The music and graphics were a cut above every other handheld at the time. I never got to play the Gane Gear sequel, so it was a nice surprise to see it here. That line scrolling stage is pretty impressive, and the music has so many layers despite the hardware limitations. As a Sega fan, that’s for another great video, the way you churn them out with a consistently great presentation, as well as pristine vocal recordings is unbelievable. Best wishes!
Loved my Game Gear and I was so excited to get this game. I remember I played it and ended up not liking it bc it was so hard. Then I was bored one day and decided to give it another shot. I forced myself to keep trying and not an I glad I did. I ended up beating the game and really liking it.
I love the GameGear and I love Shinobi, so this was a match made in heaven for me. Thanks for covering them!
This reminds me of Mega Man on how you pick your levels and use power ups to make bosses and levels easier.
What a game this is! One of my favourites on the GG. I remember me and a mate playing it and when we got the end boss we tried everything...until we realised we needed to use the first red Shinobi to beat him...lightbulb moment!
Appreciate the Episode Notes in the description. Even when they're brief, they remind me of liner notes from tapes and CDs.
Shinobi is one of my favourite of Sega’s library of exclusive games, but Shinobi on the Game Gear is one of those I haven’t played and I really want to play these two games. It looks so incredible on a handheld console.
It's a pretty good indicator of quality when the only complaint you have is wanting more gameplay, the game gear has some great gems on it. GG Phantom 2040 was one of my favorites since it had tight controls and smooth sprite animation, never got to play the console version until recently and they are different in their speed of gameplay but still a good game in my mind
I had a GameBoy as a kid, my little brother got a Game Gear later. This game was the only one I was jealous over. Such a great and innovative title.
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos, and your persistence as a great gamer allows me to see later stages! Shinobi was a perfect Game Gear game and i remember the excitement of playing it back in the day. Huge fan of yours here. Please do a video of Alien 3 Game Gear! My favourite.
If these titles were made available for the Mega Drive with expanded areas/stages and updated visuals, both would be great additions to the already amazing library.
I played both games a few years ago and they are so good I wanted more of it.
The GG Shonobi titles are great fun, even today they hold up very well for portable gaming.
Emulating these games on your phone is a great way to always have them where ever you go, and the Game Gear is perfect for emulating on your phone.
Excellent video, cheers.
This was the Megaman game of the Shinobi series. From the stage select to the different colored ninja representing a new found power. They should have called it Mega Shinobi :)
The GG shinobi series was pretty incredible for its day in every way
Absolutely incredible game, on an absolutely incredible console ,
I played it for dozens of hours as a kid driving across Canada 🇨🇦
Absolutely love these games. I was obsessed with the second game when I was a kid, when ever I power up my GG I always play S2
I was a SEGA kid and had Shinobi on Master System and a couple on Genesis, but I got a Gameboy for Christmas and never had a GameGear. I always wanted this one. Fun review 👍
GG Shinobi was my first Game Gear game and I loved it. So much fun, I spent ages figuring out the route through the final level and it was really satisfying to finish.
I owned both of these games and they were definitely in my top five of best game gear of all time!
My GameGear had limited use as I found GG lacked great games & most having too few on screen enemies & weak sound FX etc so I passed on the GG Shinobi games in the 90’s. I discovered GG Shinobi games many years later and they’re so solid I truly regret not playing them back in the 90’s and I see why SLX loves them so much
No way I could afford a GG back then. I was a big GB guy in my teen years, but I’ve always been intrigued by GG
I was never into the Shinobi series, Ninja Gaiden was my games back then. But seeing your videos on the games now makes me want to get them. Thanks for your hard work. You just made a Shinobi fan out of me.
A hint in the game at 1:34. Each colored box indicates which ninja you should use to beat the selected stage.
🤫
Thanks to your channel x, I started to really look at, and play both the master system (love master of darkness) and the Shinobi games on game gear. Growing up I never played the master system, or game gear. Thanks for both reminding me, and showing the production value of these games
I still love Arcade Shinobi. Still play it to this day.
I recently bought a Sega Game Gear and bought the Shinobi games for it. They're great games.
I love the Game Gear so much. Every game has the GG title built right in!
The GG Shinobi was like Shinobi and Mega Man had a baby with how you needed to recover them in a certain order to make the next level easier.
Game pro was where u got all your video games info.
As a kid I would go to the options in my favourite games and just listen to the music.
Splatterhouse, streets of rage, road rash, and skitching.
I would happily sit there as I did my homework, but on the weekends I get my pocket money head to the video shop and rent my favourite mega drive game's.
It was such a beautiful time to be a kid.
So awesome man!!! I am just enamored with your channel! I have been absorbing every second of every video you’ve uploaded so far (with plenty to go still thankfully)…your content is nourishment for the sega loving soul! As for this video, I will be looking into the series for sure…I feel like an absolute idiot for missing a lot of these AAA games growing up. I was a Nintendo owner when i started gaming but spent a LOT of time pouring into genesis games at friend and relatives houses (luckily for me)! Now in my 40’s I can honestly say I will always love Nintendo but I am floored to the core by sega and the many gems they felt humbled enough to leave us with over the years!
Thank you for all you do for reliving these games and the extensive coverage your provide with every video you make! Keep it up…you’ve got a diehard fan with me for sure!!!
Imagine if Sega had done a proper Shinobi for Saturn based on the GG sub-series. An expansive, non-linear, Metroid-like game, with permanent upgrades, unlockable weapons, projectiles, spells and passive abilities, with several interconnected locations to explore and even towns to visit. It could have used beautiful 2D sprites and backgrounds, with polygonal foregrounds and terrain, adding some scaling and rotation to give a 3D illusion.
That'd been an amazing console seller and would have make people to turn heads to the Saturn.
Back in the 90's I used to doodle in class, designing Sonic the Hedgehog stages. This game gave me the idea of Sonic getting special abilities from different Chaos Emeralds. While I only thought of about 4 different Sonic (types) a Sonic that could swim, a Super Bouncy Sonic (this was inspired by Sonic Spinball - so he could ricochet at high velocity while in ball form), a Firey Sonic, a Knight Sonic... They were probably some silly ideas, but I was a teenager and was feeling creative (i.e. was bored, lol).
As for this game... I recall seeing it in gaming magazines. It was such a cool idea. Sadly, I never got a GG. There didn't seem to be other/enough interesting games on it to justify getting it. I was already a dedicated Sega Genesis gamer and had moved up from the Master System.
The Game Gear was basically a portable Master System, there was even an adapter for it that let you use Master System carts directly on it.
There was also a TV adapter for it which made it very cool for road trips.
Amazing Review of the 2 Games, congrats 😊
woohoo new video.....we love you so much SLX
The game gear paved the way anesthetics wise for switch and steam deck. It is still the most comfortable hand held. Both of these game are really good 👍
My game gear needs recapped 😥
This game is honestly amaizng. And this was a amazing review. Well done
I recently found these to complete my Shinobi collection and I was not disappointed
I had a game gear and I absolutely loved it. The only issue was i only had 4 games for the entire time I had it.
I knew about the first GG Shinobi. I hadn't even realized that they had made a second one. I'll definitely have to check it out!
Adding this one to the must get list. Awesome video
Goddamit =D I was less than a minute in and I could already see an easier way I should've been playing Shinobi 3. It never occurred to me to block the big samurai's sword fire-wave attack, I'd always try and jump it XD
This is what I love about your content I always get something new from gaming past, whether it's title's I hadn't looked at or something about a familiar game I'd overlooked, great work =)
Awesome review man!
Definitely one of my favorite games on the Game Gear! Never played the sequel though 😕
Born 12-11-1983...
Yes, Game gear Shinobi, Shinobi 2, then Revenge of Shinobi on the Genesis, Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3 return of the ninja master...
PS2 Shinobi gave a Cameo for the costume of our favorite character we grew up with, but just wasn't the same. Xbox 360 had a retro Genesis game disk with Shinobi 3, with pointless stipulations for the 1st level to unlock the original arcade version I vaguely remember as a toddler...
Miss the days of pause buttons & cheat codes...
FFA08, if I still remember correctly for game gears Shinobi 2. Two brothers had no idea that the 1st game had no passcodes, nore did I beat the 1st that which had none. No speed run, but a Ninja takes one's time.
: )
I missed a lot of these gems back in the day! Going to have to check these out.
Just played GG Shinobi again a few weeks ago. It's still amazing.
Wow what a game!! It was my 1st game on Game Gear and I don't think I put my game gear down until I completed!!! its a brilliant game so need to revisit it!!
I adored this on my game gear when I had it at the time...
I played these some months ago for the first time, enjoyed them very much
That boss music is a great translation of the 16-bit version.
I had the first Shinobi on Game Gear, absolutely loved it, great game.
Never had a Sega System in my life, started last year to get some, so the Game Gear came to me. Was looking for some good classics but damn, Shinobi 1 and 2 are still fun to play today. Some days I just sit on my couch and just play these games.
I remember going to Software Etc in August 1991 to buy an Atari Lynx II (Arcade Ninja Gaiden was a system seller for me). When I entered the store & requested to purchase the Lynx, the rep tried to talk me into purchasing a Game Gear instead. They had a Game Gear on display running GG Shinobi. I thought it looked good, but I was slightly annoyed because the rep was wasting my time trying to sell me on something other than what I asked for. I stood firm on my Atari Lynx request, & purchased the Lynx II. I played other people's Game Gear, & thought it was good, but I was more impressed/content with my Lynx.
I eventually traded in all my Lynx stuff in early 1994. I bought a Game Gear in early 1997. I played GG Shinobi but never beat it. I beat GG Shinobi 2. I thought the first GG Shinobi was a slightly better game, but the second one was still a memorable experience for me (I remember beating it laying in my bed at night).
The two GG Shinobi games & Fatal Fury Special are IMO the most impressive Game Gear Games.
Awesome thanks segalordx great work Sir
The lord has returned with another great video. 👍
Somehow I'd completely forgot the first game so thanks for the memory jog.
I was a Game Gear early adopter as well and had and loved the hell outta this game.
I would love for this channel to talk about Shinobi on the 3ds
Fantastic games, the Shinobi series in general is one of my favorite series ever
I never had a Game Gear but I got all the 3DS eshop releases and this was definitely one of the best
I recently got a saturn and its freakin amazing but now i need to hunt down a game gear! Sega rules
GG shinobi 1 and 2 are MUST play! They are short and challenging in a good way (not wasting your time). I enjoy replaying them once a year or so > Great game!
2 of the first games I got when I picked up a Game Gear along with GG Aleste 1 & 2. Like those these both need to be ported asap so more ppl can enjoy them.
These games were absolutely amazing.
The first GG Shinobi was my childhood game. Like the soundtrack and simple gameplay.
I used to play shinobi on the game gear at bed after school great times!
I never got the sequel, but GG Shinobi was my favourite portable game for a long time. it was one of the first games i bought from the 3ds eshop, which is sadly closing in march.
this review makes me want to buy a game gear again. hopefully sega will make a larger game gear than the micro and feature these games. OR do a game gear collection on the switch.
Today.. 30 years since GG Shinobi 2! :)
I just got done playing through all 3 Shinobi titles on Genesis and they were so fun. I've never played these but I'd love to. Sega should release a Shinobi collection like Konami has done for TMNT which had all the console and arcade versions available. I'd buy it up in a heartbeat. It would be easy money for them.
Love GG Shinobi and Silent Fury my favourite Sega Game Gear games and SLX is right this would have been awesome if Sega did this for the Genesis / MD to sit along side the great 16bit Shinobi games
I bought this when it first came out, it was freakin awesome
I personally love the GG Shinobi games I own both of them as of April and may 2015 when I was 21 years old the games are real awesome. It was after I got my 2nd game gear after my birthday ways before my 3rd game gear with sonic 2 early 93 box where it's upgraded to the McWill screen refurbished. I gotta come back to playing both the GG shinobi. Best regards Nikita.K
Loved game gear as a young adult. Think it was the 3rd sega system i bought with my own money after Genesis and Sega Cd
Showing some GG love! Heck yeah!
I have about half of the NA library at 180 games.
Come on, Sega Lord X! Do a "best of the best" or "worst of the worst" for this handheld so I can learn more about what I actually have here!
I had Ninja Gaiden as a kid, but didn't get Shinobi until I was a collector. Good old Ninja video games!
"Spent many a night with the covers over my head and AC adapter plugged in.... "
Hahaha... I also lived that story.
Suddenly I'm feeling excited for the GG Shinobi On genesis Fan remake.
Game Gear was so forward thinking. Other than the NEW 3DS this is my favorite handheld system and WOW that second Shinobi? Kojima in 8 Bit.
I always felt these games didn’t get enough attention, nice work
Hey SLX, Been wanting to ask for sometime but do you ever play the newer Sega games ? I have been loving the yakuza series and just started Judgement and those are fantastic Sega games and would love to hear your take on them.
Thanks again for the amazing content
Bought Shinobi on the Game Gear when I was a kid and played a lot of it cause it's so good! Then finally managed to complete it even though it took me ages cause I was still young and dumb. Gave my GameGear and all games to my young cuz a long time ago. Then I bought it recently seeing it's available on the 3DS Nintendo store! Completed it and it's still awesome after about 20 years!!! Nintendo store still sell it I think, but you'll need to put money in with a Switch account or something like that. I think it's April next year the store completely closes for Wii U and 3DS.
I was just playing this for the first time in like 10 yrs. Major coincidence
Dang, I forgot about this one. Had it and played it to death on my game gear as a kid. Never remember beating it though
I love GG Shinobi, I always rented it from the local video store over and over never got tired of it, I always regretted that I did not own them though, until few years ago I found both GG shinobi 1 & 2 for less than 10 USD hahaha. A complete steal and a childhood wound closed
GG Shinobi was my favorite series for my Game Gear.
GG Shinobi, the one Shinobi game that is over before it even begins.
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Sonic Frontiers
I had no idea! All this time I thought the GG version was just a Master System port.
I just remembered there was another game gear game called Sylvan tale. Hopefully you can get to review it some day
Ha, I never knew Shinobi was a different game on GG. I haven't really bothered about it's missing status in my collection, since I figured it was just Shinobi. I did want it, but ... kinda didn't care much. Thanks for the infos!
I played The Silent Fury and always thought it was the best Shinobi game ever made. I still hold that sentiment. I never went back and played GGS1, assuming there was no way it could be as great as GGS2, lol. I played GGS1 a few years back and loved it just as much as the second one. Sad I missed getting and playing both back then 😢
Quite challenging game when I first played it but still my favourite
Alot of people assume the game gear was a portable genesis but it's just a portable master system. The only Sega console I've ever owned is a dream cast. I'd love to own some of the older hardware and software but the money thing is to steep. I hope Nintendo releases a series of Sega compilations for the switch eventually kinda like how the tmnt 8 bit games just recieved a 13 game compilation
Shinobi was my launch game gear game I actually like it alot.
