    As a kid I had to ride around with mom a lot, so I played the absolute hell out of my Game Gear, day and night with the car power adapter! I had the Sega briefcase looking thing to keep it all in :) Awesome video - I had never even heard of some of these!

      When I was a kid I didn't have a TV in my room, so I scored a TV tuner for my GG. Went to sleep every night watching it. It was a huge part of my teen years.

      Man compared to other portable games at the time, the TV tuner seemed like absolute magic. I always wanted one so bad!

    Mr. SEGA LORD X, I'm Japanese and tell you the true pronounciation.
    The true title name of [GG Aleste] in Japanese is [Galvanic Gunner (GG) A-LE-SU-TA] .
    It was released in 1991-12-29, the original price was 4,944YEN ($40).
    This is the most expensive GG title in Japan, bucause the number of released package were very few.
    And now it cost at least over $400 (with box, manual).
    I bought two secondhand [GG Aleste 1] (with box, manual), but the price was about $70 in 1993
    and the latter one was about $180 in 2000.

I especially appreciate your Master System videos, as it was my first console.Just wanted to say that your appraisal of Tail's S ky Patrol had me chuckling, nearly as funny as the love you showed for the bonus games on the ATGames Genesis Flashback; I am in full agreement with you that Bomber and Cross the Road are seminal gaming experiences, the likes of which we've very rarely seen, before or since!

    Great video! And _Jesus Christ_ I had no idea Power Strike 2 was worth as much as it is, at least if the one copy I can see on Ebay is anything to go by... I might even still have my old copy! I really loved that game growing up, still do, and I rather like the hacked Master System version. The larger screen size works well, and while it makes the game easier that can be compensated for with a higher difficulty settingp While half the backgrounds are too small, half of them seem to work fine, I'm not sure if that was the doing of the hack author or if they were Master System resolution assets left in a Game Gear game for some reason.

    • @MarcBarkyMarta
      @MarcBarkyMarta 4 года назад

      Furthermore, it was based of an arcade game that was NOT the original Space Invaders. Rather, it’s a watered down port of Majestic Twelve, known as Super Space Invaders ‘91 outside of Japan and North American regions. The arcade game is one of my all time favorites, but not so much with this GG/SMS port.

    A truly educational vid since I've never seen most of these, or even knew of their existence. Would have loved to have played them back in college, especially Galaga.

    As the hardware has problems nowadays (poor screen and caps getting old)... I wonder, maybe using something like an PSP with emulator, might be a nice way to check the GG's game library. The cost and the work, one has to take with screen mod and changing caps is kinda daunting...

    • @Athonite
      @Athonite 6 лет назад +1

      This. The passive displays these shipped with were washed out to begin with, and they don't get better with age. I applaud Sega and Atari for raising the bar by using color screens; the technology just wasn't robust yet.

    • @LitGaming999
      @LitGaming999 6 лет назад

      Agreed. Trying to find a place to replace the screen. Some can do an LCD for 150-200 but considering i only spent 50 bucks on the system don't know if i can warrant that price.

    • @Athonite
      @Athonite 6 лет назад

      David Huenecke yeah, I nabbed a used PSP in very good condition for $50, plus it came with 6 psp games and a carry case. Add in a sd card and converter, still less than $75 all in, and can run all the classic 8&16 bit titles...no hardware mods required. I'm a huge Sega fan but I couldn't justify modding a game gear when I can do more with a softmod PSP...

      If you're going to emulate Game Gear a 3DS / 2DS might be better than a PSP for individual titles. M2 wrote the 3DS GG virtual console emulator and unsurprisingly it's damn near flawless in execution.

    Gear Aleste, I think this is called Power Strike II here in the UK/PAL region?
    My sibling bought this for 25p back in 2000, now it's about £170 just the cartridge, crazy. Though our cartridge needs a repair. The thing I love most about this handheld is it was a portable master system too, very ahead if it's time. And probably why it's made a resurgence in popularity recently, they're expensive even now.
    Am getting my ones repaired and one of them fully modded with a backlit IPS display, should be fun.

    Tell ya what though, you can get GG Aleste 1 and 2 along with Power Strike 1 and 2 for the Master System in one collection known as the Aleste Collection for PS4 and Switch from M2. I bought the collection specifically for the Game Gear stuff. And they even made a new game for the Game Gear! Hard to believe, I know. It’s known as GG Aleste 3 and I think it’s even better than GG Aleste 2. The package is totally worth it for the Game Gear games alone. Got my copy recently along with Zoids Infinity Blast. Better late than never. I said that because I had plans on picking up those two games but either forgot about them or didn’t have the time to buy those games but I’m glad I did.

    I had Griffin. It was my first game on the game gear, as we got it from Hong Kong and that was the bundle game. It was hard as hell, but it gets a bit varied later on with flying stages. Also there are scantily clad cut scenes with a blue haired lady. Did nothing for me as a 10 year old.

    gonna have to get an everdrive to access most of these i think

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  6 лет назад

      If you have a PSP, a quick softmod will give you access to them on a decent screen. If you have the machine itself, I recommend an Everdrive to try them out before paying for the more expensive ones.

      I'm not sure about the Vita. I haven't messed around with it in awhile. Everdrive works like a champ too. Own one myself.

    I wonder if the slowdown on these games would be gone via emulation, since software emulation can feature added RAM use.

    Wow, I didn't know that the Game Gear had that many shooters! I was already familiar with Halley Wars (because I was a fan of the original Halley's Comet in the arcade), not to mention Aleste, but didn't realize how many others were on it. I'll definitely have to add these to my RetroPie image, or see if there's a GG emulator for my modded PSP for sure!
    BTW, since you mentioned the GG version of G-Loc, I'd like to know what your take on the Genesis version is? I know that it's supposed to be somewhat of a spiritual "1st Person" successor to After Burner, but collectors in general have not taken kindly to it. I've passed on it quite a few times, so I'd like to hear your take on it if you could take the time to reply. Thanks!
    Another great episode - I always look forward to the next one, and when it comes, I'm never disappointed!

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  6 лет назад

      Genesis G-LOC's biggest sin is that it isn't the arcade. It's scaled back pretty aggressively. I don't think it's a bad purchase if you can get it cheap. Just don't expect the arcade.

    Haha, after playing GG Aleste 2 on the Aleste Collection, I don’t think GG Aleste 2 holds up well in gameplay department. The game is too vulnerable against the same tactic for 6 stages straight: Neo Napalm. The Neo Napalm is too wide when fully powered up and bosses are half of them very safe to point blank. In GGA1 you need to be more aware with the point blanking attempts.
    Are there any plans to have an updated video that covers GG Aleste 3?

  • @kevinstrade2752
    @kevinstrade2752 6 лет назад

    great video, the GG is rarely thought of as having shooters. I do have a GG and a few games but I also have an emulator on my dreamer.I prefer to play on that. some great games that do not get enough coverage or credit.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  6 лет назад

      Yeah, the GG being a shoot'em up system doesn't really cross many folks minds. That's what drew me to the episode.

    Yeah. G-Loc is legitimately good. Rather than down-port the Genesis version, they went the smart route, and just made something from the ground up for 8-bit hardware.

      Absolutely. Something that seemed to work well on a number of games. Castle of Illusion SMS/GG being another great example.

    10:50 *_Magical Taruruuto-kun_* I wonder if they made it a slow pace on purpose OR if it's a technical limitation due to how ambitious they were ?
    ...in any case, most of my romhacks are hard-patched, "Complete" romhacks that offer a fresh new experience via new levels...
    ...but, this is definitely a missed opportunity by the romhacking community to offer a much needed "improvement" patch to speed up the action & game-play.

    Great video, I would probably pay more attention to the Game Gear scene if the build quality of the system was better, got 3 or 4 systems but each has an issue that makes it difficult to play and the best one (which I did replace the capacitors) now has a failing screen, would be nice to have an alternative without having to constantly repair or modify.

    The biggest problem with collecting for the Game Gear, is the majority of time that you have to replace the capacitors on your machine just to get it to work these days. I'd imagine a lot of people haven't bothered collecting because of this, hence the lower prices for the cartridges.

    • @SegaLordX

    Panzer Mini look likes the best game because it has a driven character and some personality to it. Another question… If I would want this game gear, what can you tell me about how long the battery lasts inside this machine??

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  6 лет назад

      Battery life is 3 hours roughly. I'd advise rechargeables to mitigate the cost of constant replacement.

    • @janfreidun
      @janfreidun 6 лет назад

      Alright, well I was wondering for the reason that I do not think I would have enjoyed if the machine gave up on me in the middle of something, My guess remains as this reaches you maybe then it is the full colour showing in games that demands the juice in relation to a rough relative measurement about how far the batteries can make it in terms of longlivety?

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  6 лет назад

      It's screen is backlit, which eats batteries. You can always use an AC adapter for it. Most people do.

      I see, this fortunatly sounds like the best solution for me, I am open to suggestions but hesitate because I want to proitise the set up of a few 32x titles and my Saturn (since a CD plus cartridge is on its way, sir) maybe the game Phantasy zone (Asia/JAP) stand more in line to my budget for as my situation is for as it is, I can never work full time on the open market. So Before I advance into a new Project in need be a Little harsh to be honest I need to cut some ideas cold and go in to only a few items even considering my interest have a wide potential far away from a realistic budget.I have also been frustrade that one of my all time fives is Sonic 3D for Saturn, as both CIB offered I bought freezes in the start up screen, but in the future I need to find a better copy and perhaps get Kolibri finally because cartridges or cassettes are stilld kind of robust for the most part and various senario, I have some experience of playing titles for my PAL set up that are not region locked as they are more modern conversions of the games that has been reproduced and re released. .. This comment is getting too of topic, right, but I wanted to tell you this was a good show topic, I have never looked deep into a solution concerning questions about how Game Gear works, but better yet, since I Ignored looking into it when I was new,maybe the time will be right to focus more attention on this machine in the neart future. My Nephew is a Sonic Fan you see and he is turning six this year, this was one of your best episodes in a long time, sir, my good man. Thanks for never holding back on the principle: Always be sincere about gaming, one can really feel the pathos and hearfelt joy and open personal emotions from you from you as you work with these things, it is genuine passion and this is why your show is still great after all this time has passed!

    I remember buying Panzer Dragoon Mini cart only off of Ebay, as a broken/non-working listing for $30 shipped. I bought it on a whim, it arrives, I lightly clean the contacts, put it in the console and it booted right up. lol Emailed the seller with how easy it ran and was asking him how he couldn't get it to run.
    He had instant regret selling it that cheaply. It's a shite game though, only riding on the coattails of the PD franchise.

    Even now, 4 years or so later, at least loose games in excellent shape are still super cheap, even cheaper now than Gameboy as that went exploitation rack stupid over a year ago sadly finally having the snakes catch up to it. Great list of games, and it may crawl, but Tarurutokun is a solid game, I may seek that out.
