OMG! Hello Ben🤩! Long time fan of you! I was an avid watching of the Ben Heck Show! Loved watching all you portable console mod videos! Totally agree, Mathijs is really doing some really amazing stuff with the Game Gear! Yes, both the Atari Lynx and turbo express could benefit from something like this 👍 Thank you for watching the video 😁

I am working on the original gameboy, I am hoping to make it in a horizontal form factor, like the GBA, however, using the same aesthetics, such as the big rounded edges of the original DMG, so far, I have succeded in making a brand new PCB of the original Gameboy, and it works, so now I am working on puting it on a horizontal form factor.

I'll need some time to gather funds to do this but I will fix them now. I would love to see him come up replacement DMG Gameboys. I have plenty of dead ones of those too. Great video like always Tito. You don't get the recognition you deserve!
I love keeping as much original hardware as possible, and this seems like the perfect solution to any boards that have irreparable damage. I'd love to see other consoles get the same treatment. I have some snes boards I'm trying to repair that could definitely benefit from a more robust/improved board with less points of failure.
My feel when you buy an old Sega Game Gear, take out the AA batteries and throw them away, take out the corroded motherboard and throw it away, take out the obsolete screen and throw it away, take the scratched and dirty shell and throw it away, take all your cartridges and throw them away, and then build a brand new unit from parts and use a flashcart.
Fantastic video, Tito. The Game Gear is still my favorite handheld of all time, and I’ve upgraded my original quite a bit. It’s exciting to hear about this work. He is so close to completely recreating the OEM model that I’d love his future works to include recreating the remaining few OEM components (such as the chip required from donor consoles, not the LCD screens, of course!). So then no donors needed! I’d sign up for that preorder!!
If I had a single asic version of the GG I would insta buy this, what an amazing amount of work. I'd definitely like to see a dual asic variant as well as a way to wire up 2 batteries instead of just one to double battery life, but as is it's still an excellent set of mods.
Brilliant! This is very exciting to me as a retro game hack. For years now I've been imagining new boards such as this for both of the Gameboy Advance consoles. To reverse engineer this particular console and create a modern, better version is fantastic!
Very fascinating video. Never in my wildest dreams I would ever see the Game Gear be reverse engineered to a better mainboard. I think he should try doing the Turbo Express because that system would be great to have something better than it was when it was released.
I appreciate what you and others are doing to keep old consoles going and around for generations to come. (PS if I'm picked for a sound board I'd rather a "reroll" since I'm not into doing mods myself and my Game Gear is still working so I'd rather not tempt fate, just liking the content and commenting to promote the engagement). :)
Love this project! The GG seems to be one of the more sensitive designs with cals having to be replaced and tough troubleshooting. I'd actually love to see a design which makes it possible to keep the original screen(yeah hate me xD) . But just for that I refurbed and keep one of my GGs in original state- although I'm scared about replacing the caps again one day.
Great mod!! A Turbo Express board replacement would be incredible, and the proprietary parts could be salvaged from other non-working NEC handhelds and home consoles from any region.
Wow, this is great news! Really glad to see the Game Gear getting some love. Lots of mods for different versions of Game Boy (which I’m also a fan of) but Game Gear has been getting overlooked until more recently. Personally I’m just waiting to get an LCD mod with perfect pixel scaling for the game gear. Once one is available, definitely grabbing one.
I’m so excited to bring my console back to life. I literally bought a new cap kit yesterday, but now I want all the new boards. I can’t wait to see what other boards he comes up with. This is great news
That is truely a great way to give a new life for consoles, that otherwise would have been laying in a drawers forever, or (event worse) would go to the dumpster. Would love to see Mathijs make boards for other handheld consoles for sure, but for now can't wait until his full GG boards would hit his ebay market. Thanks for a video Tito and for this great giveaway!
Even though I'll be playing gamegear games on my analogue pocket, I'm still and super excited about this and love to see projects like this born out of the passion for the original system and games.
I remember years ago, after seen a Ben Heck video wondering if this could be done. With none of the knowledge needed to do it myself I had to look to commissioning it from someone, unfortunately no one I thought to talk to seemed very interested and I ended giving up on it. Glad to see someone else with the needed skills eventually had the same idea. The thing I'd like to see going forward that I'd thought of at the same time is the main board being reduced in size and a new smaller more comfortable case being made with a larger single battery compartment and made with the new lcd screens in mind. If it's possible maybe include the power, sound & main boards all in one single board or maybe even a Bluetooth module for headphones.
Thanks for the great content, Tito!! Man! I"ve been waiting for a project like this!! So happy someone jumped on the GG for a complete "resto-mod", if you will. And to be honest, now that rechargeable long life power is handled.....There is plenty of space in that there case to tackle HDMI out....Maybe? Definatly wanna try and get my hands on one of these boards!!
This is really cool. The Game Gear was my very first console as a kid. Didn't hardly know anyone who had one at the time (they all had Gameboys). It's really cool to see all the love the Game Gear gets these days.
Future project would be mainboards for all the models. Also power boards that are designed to use the original aa batteries. I personally like rechargeable AA. Thanks to both of you!
I want one of these so bad. My original Game Gear my dad got me as a kid capacitors have leaked onto the board so bad it's not fixable. Having one of these would solve that issue & bring back to life a huge part of my childhood
This is absolutely fantastic. I'm so glad that people like Mathijs are doing this. I'll definitely be getting one of these boards in the near future to hopefully resurrect my dead motherboard from an early upgrade that I screwed up and made unworkable. Awesome coverage and another great video as always, Tito!
What an incredible job Mathijs has done. It makes me wonder what else could be squeezed out of our retro consoles by this approach. Another top notch video Tito, thanks for bringing this project to light! If this comment wins please reselect - as much as I loving winning stuff this would end up in unused as I am not a console modder, please let it go to someone who really is going to use it!
That's actually what they used to do for the analogue nt. The original (not mini) units were made with parts harvested from damaged consoles and put onto a new board. I'm not sure why they stopped making them that way. Maybe it was just cheaper to use an fpga.
Many cool new boards for old consoles coming out in the past two or three years... looking forward for when Mega Drive and SNES new boards magicaly appears.
That's awesome. I wonder if the region selection can be changed into a switch so you don't have to re-solder it if you want to change regions... I look forward to seeing what he does next. I'd love to see something that is just drop in without having to solder a new screen.
Mathijs makes me proud to be Dutch What I presonally like to see him work on is actually improving the gaming experience on hand helds with: -stereo speakers and stereo sound, by splitting the sound channels, then mixing them together to have some stereo seperation. I have my Twin Famicom modded like that. I have an analog wheel so I can set it anywhere between mono and full stereo seperation. It is amazing -bigger screens, as big as possible, keeping the form factor the same, just cut away some of the shell.
Dank je! There is actually another Dutch guy, Maarten van Bever, who started reverse engineering the dual ASIC model. Answer to your question, what color do you like? White, black, green, blue, yellow, purple or red?
@@wwband1 Cool, so the Netherlands is now reverse engineering the Game Gear. So unexpected, but very cool. I actually have a transparent game gear. Even the protective lens all clear with the game gear text, logo's, etc..
Tito, I've been on a marathon watching your videos. Amazing work, I love everything about them and I really like the fact that you showcase the efforts and incredible work from the modding community. I hope you get the recognition you deserve, love the videos, keep this amazing work up!
That's really cool -- I love to see replacements like this. -- Honestly, with all that empty board space, it would be cool to see Mathijs miniaturize it -- like to fit into a landscape GBA case or something -- so you could actually fit a GG in your pocket for once. -- That would be hecka rad.
Would absolutely love to get one of these mainboards, hopefully it won't be long before they come back in stock. I've had a dead GG sitting in a box for years and would be stoked to finally be able to use it. And as for potential future projects, I feel like making an option with an LCD already integrated to be even closer to a drop-in replacement would be pretty cool, and make for even better value to the end user. (Hell, maybe even integrate power and sound onto the mainboard)
As someone who has some dead Game Gears I want to get working, I'd love some kind of a system where you can trade in your dead boards along with some payment for one with the chip already installed. That along with a partnership for some kind of preconfigured LCD solution would be amazing to allow this to be accessible to people who are terrible at soldering.
The guy even took the time to stake down the little bodge wire at 12:12. Am impressed! Imagine what he could do with the MGB, or a CGB even! He could make the CGB fit in the MGB shell, or the MGB fit in the CGB shell 😂
I love these types of projects, replacing the main board is a great way to preserve the console. I would love to see a version of the GameGear PCB designed to be a home console, it would be great to play SMS titles too
I can see it now. "Building a new NEW Nintendo 3ds in 2031! Oled screens with wireless fast charging". Great work as always, glad something like this exists.
Cool mod! I'd love to see Mathijs collaborate with a shell maker and try to shrink the size of the Game Gear PCB as much as possible, basically creating the Game Gear Pocket that we never got!
I love these fully reverse engineered boards because they can save so many consoles that are corroded beyond repair. I would love to see him do what Tito said and include the LCD components into the board. SO all you have to do is buy the lcd and plug the ribbon cable in.
Very interesting, I am trying to repair my GameGear by using RetroSix stuff and its my first time doing Electronic work like soldering. That was due to finding this channel and taking the plunge so thanks Tito!
This is really amazing, and I think stuff like this is the endgame for game preservation. I'm very glad to see that it's open source as well. I'd like to see more motherboards like this made in the future for other systems, maybe with some options to use an FPGA to substitute in for the proprietary chips.
I like what I saw. Would really love some GBA Micro reverse engineering. New power options for USB Type C and with no loss of features ie: link cables. Happy Holidays everybody!!
This is so cool. Mathijs is amazing. Can't wait to see what he does next. A new motherboard for the 2-asic model would be pretty cool, but since he's already done one game gear it'd be cool to see him do something else, maybe something rare like the wonderswan or neo geo poacket.
Awesome work from Mathijs! Talking of reverse engineering, and I know it's a totally different job, how about re-engineering the ASIC[s] on an off-the-shelf FPGA? the patents on the actual ASIC have gone public domain for ages, even if they were never released to the public. Yes, I repeat, I know it's a titan work, but it doesn't have to be identical to the original, just compatible, and some improvements may show up on the way...
Fantastic finally someone from the Netherlands. I would like to see a Sega Nomad board saver. Probably very hard, but it's a really hard to get console as well. Probably a lot broken as well.
Thank you for your videos. The quality of the contents is awsome. The Sega Game Gear is one of my fovorite console and I would like to see more videos on how to renew them. Every time I find one in bad conditions, I cannot avoid to catch it and try to give it a new life.
That looks great, I recapped my Game Gear but it had been damaged quite a lot by the previous caps leaking. It does work still, but knowing there's a replacement board out there is reassuring!
Awesome work, and with the new shell it looks so good ! I wish he would do that for the original DMG gameboy, with built-in usb-c battery, internal pro sound, and all the cool stuff.
What a fantastic video and a delight to see a new life given to the game gear. Now, this maybe a stretch but it seems he has the talent to pull it off. I would love to see a N64 board redesign for portable use. Ive seen many modders cannibalize existing n64 boards and McGuiver these boards for portable use, but perhaps a board designed with portability would be easier Thanks again!
This is awesome! I've considered doing similar with the Atari Lynx.

Your welcome dude! Glad you’re enjoying the channel!
This is really cool. The Game Gear was my very first console as a kid. Didn't hardly know anyone who had one at the time (they all had Gameboys). It's really cool to see all the love the Game Gear gets these days.
Have to say the engineering that went into this mobo is pretty crazy....I'm really impressed!
Thanks Justin!!
What an incredible job Mathijs has done.
It makes me wonder what else could be squeezed out of our retro consoles by this approach.
Another top notch video Tito, thanks for bringing this project to light!
If this comment wins please reselect - as much as I loving winning stuff this would end up in unused as I am not a console modder, please let it go to someone who really is going to use it!
what we need is a pixel perfect ips display for an unscaled proper image
This is awesome. I’d like to see him make modern boards for NES with native RGB output or some similar projects.
Amazing how much he was able to simplify the design and reduce the bom. Good job
So this guy basically modernized and fixed all the issues of the original. The only issue is this whole handheld died because of Pokemon in '97.
That's awesome. I wonder if the region selection can be changed into a switch so you don't have to re-solder it if you want to change regions...
I look forward to seeing what he does next. I'd love to see something that is just drop in without having to solder a new screen.
Another great video! Good luck to everyone in the contest... I think a good creative idea might be for him to include some LEDs into his new boards
Mathijs makes me proud to be Dutch
What I presonally like to see him work on is actually improving the gaming experience on hand helds with:
-stereo speakers and stereo sound, by splitting the sound channels, then mixing them together to have some stereo seperation. I have my Twin Famicom modded like that. I have an analog wheel so I can set it anywhere between mono and full stereo seperation. It is amazing
-bigger screens, as big as possible, keeping the form factor the same, just cut away some of the shell.
@@dbnpoldermans4120 I was talking about the color of the prototype stero sound board PCB ;)
@@wwband1 My choice would be red
Tito, I've been on a marathon watching your videos. Amazing work, I love everything about them and I really like the fact that you showcase the efforts and incredible work from the modding community. I hope you get the recognition you deserve, love the videos, keep this amazing work up!
This is amazing. I hope someone will be pulling this off with the Gameboy Advance/SP soon.
What a top guy trying to preserve and improve a console classic.
I wish console and controllers manufacturers aimed towards that kind of reliability, longevity and overall quality in their products.
This is amazing, I've got 3 dead GG's I've not been able to repair I could rebuild with these motherboards
I'd like to see one for the GBA one day and it's improvement, especially for the sound.
Awesome time to be a retro gamer. So many brilliant makers like Mathijs out there.
I love that its a real replacment and not just a "Put a Emulation CPU in"
This is truly awesome. Well done Mathijs. Very well done.
Exciting :D I just recapped my game gear with all solid caps
I like what I saw. Would really love some GBA Micro reverse engineering. New power options for USB Type C and with no loss of features ie: link cables. Happy Holidays everybody!!
Excited to start reviving Game Gears from the dead with this!
I'd love to see what he can do for the Gameboy line. This work on the GG is epic.
Great job, hope that all goes well and we can get a drop in place motherboard with lcd already built in in a near future
Seeing how well priced the sound boards are, I'm very keen to see this motherboard pricing. Fantastic job dude.
So impressive! Wonderful work, Mathijs! Great video, Tito!
What a fantastic video and a delight to see a new life given to the game gear. Now, this maybe a stretch but it seems he has the talent to pull it off. I would love to see a N64 board redesign for portable use. Ive seen many modders cannibalize existing n64 boards and McGuiver these boards for portable use, but perhaps a board designed with portability would be easier
Thanks again!
