This may be the most incredible project to come from the retro community, I never even considered the possibility of reverse engineering the motherboard and then engineering an improved motherboard, and for this to come from one guy blows my mind, it’s the engineers and modders like mathijs that makes this community so great, and the modders and RUclipsrs like yourself macho for shining a light on these projects and then being able to dumb it down to be easily understandable and simple enough for anyone to get into modifications, so thank you mathijs and macho, can’t wait see what’s next, I’m hoping this leads to reverse engineered boards for other handhelds

With none of the knowledge needed to do it myself I had to look to commissioning it from someone, unfortunately no one I thought to talk to seemed very interested and I ended giving up on it. Glad to see someone else with the needed skills eventually had the same idea. The thing I'd like to see going forward that I'd thought of at the same time is the main board being reduced in size and a new smaller more comfortable case being made with a larger single battery compartment and made with the new lcd screens in mind. If it's possible maybe include the power, sound & main boards all in one single board or maybe even a Bluetooth module for headphones.

This is amazing, I've got 3 dead GG's I've not been able to repair I could rebuild with these motherboards

Mathias needs to make a Stereo soundboard with an extra connector to plug in a right channel speaker. Even though not many GG games have stereo sound, it would still be cool to have 2 speakers on a game Gear with a custom shell. Also I would like to see an ATSC digital TV tuner board be designed to fit inside the obsolete GG TV tuner pack.

I’m so excited to bring my console back to life. I literally bought a new cap kit yesterday, but now I want all the new boards. I can’t wait to see what other boards he comes up with. This is great news

With so many components removed from the original board, I'd like to see how small Mathijs could feasibly make the hardware fit. Would be really cool to see a hardware clone of a game gear at such a small size without using something like an FPGA.
I should have a small pile of dead Game Gears around here somewhere so I'll see if I can find and donate those to further his work.

I love these, but what I want to see is a Game Gear that is half the size, but the same size screen and buttons! Hopefully they can recreate the MB to be 50% smaller and a new shell to go with it!

a VGA video out option for these board would be easy to implement and useful

That's amazing! I've got two dead ones that I've been trying to revive but no luck so far (tried replacing the caps with ceramic ones like in one of your previous videos), so if these boards become more available that would be great to revive them and add them to my collection. I'm wondering if some sort of FPGA chip that mimics the original ASICs would be more viable in the future - maybe that's a job for MVG and other coding/firmware experts? All the same, hoping to see more of Mathijs' work in the future, possibly in other handhelds like the Gameboy Advance. Thanks Tito!

Love to see old electronics gain a new life. It'd be nice to see if Mathijs can bring back some previously thought dead Neo Geo pockets or sega nomads.

Great job, hope that all goes well and we can get a drop in place motherboard with lcd already built in in a near future

The bit with the TV tuner makes me wonder how hard it would be to make a modern counterpart with parts harvested from a small DVB-T tuner. The tech in there is bound to be able to handle 5 volts and below.

I would love to see more mods for the Sega Nomad. I never had a game gear when I was young, but I absolutely LOVED my Nomad.

It's petty far fetched, but I'd love to see HDMI out from that board as well. I don't think it would be incredibly difficult especially since he's already got the video circuitry reworked and modernized on his own custom main board replacement. I'd definitely pay extra for that.

I am looking forward to the next leap forward in 3d printing/home fabrication. The idea that something is no longer produced may not be a bottleneck forever.

That's really cool -- I love to see replacements like this. -- Honestly, with all that empty board space, it would be cool to see Mathijs miniaturize it -- like to fit into a landscape GBA case or something -- so you could actually fit a GG in your pocket for once. -- That would be hecka rad.

Would absolutely love to get one of these mainboards, hopefully it won't be long before they come back in stock. I've had a dead GG sitting in a box for years and would be stoked to finally be able to use it. And as for potential future projects, I feel like making an option with an LCD already integrated to be even closer to a drop-in replacement would be pretty cool, and make for even better value to the end user. (Hell, maybe even integrate power and sound onto the mainboard)

I'd love to see Mathijs do something similar with making new more efficient boards (for newer screens, modern batteries etc) for the Atari Lynx for a future project. Heck, why not something really out there like the Milton Bradley Microvision too? 😄
