    I met my wife back in 1989, and we were friends for eleven years and finally started dating in 2000. We were engaged six months later and married a year after that. This October we'll have been married for 21 years... So Harry met Sally is our favorite Rom Com...

    The "pecan piiiiie" scene was improvised, and when Sally looks off to the side when Harry asks her to repeat, it was actually Meg Ryan looking at Rob Reiner to see if this was serious as she thought it was so silly.

    You HAVE to do The Princess Bride. Rob Reiner directed that one and it is the sweetest movie you could ever see. Tons of quotable lines from it too

    Rob Reiner started his directing career with a string of well-received films including the hilariously brilliant "This Is Spinal Tap", "The Princess Bride", "Stand By Me" plus the three you've seen ("Misery", "A Few Good Men" and this one). I'm sure eventually you'll be doing those three! ("The Sure Thing" is another one). Alas his winning streak came to a spectacular ending with the stinker "North", lol.

    Carrie Fisher is also great in "The Burbs" (comedy/horror) with Tom Hanks and 'The Blues Brothers' with John Belusi and Dan Ackroyd she also wrote a movie (and book) loosely based her life "Postcards from the Edge" starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine. Her mom (Debbie Reynolds) and daughter (Billie Lourd) are also actors and her Dad was a actor/singer (Eddie Fisher)

    The first romcom as we currently understand the genre (though not the first romcom in movies ever, of course. That's probably "It Happened One Night", 1935). Glad to see "I'll have what she's having" is still a funny line for folks who haven't seen this movie. Makes me feel less old-fashioned. :)

    I am sure others have mentioned but the 'I will have what she is having' woman is Rob Reiner's mother. That scene was shot at Katz's Deli in Lower East Side of Manhattan. Not only have I been to Katz's but one visit actually sat at the very same table, and thus ended up in several dozen tourist's photos. On another visit to Katz's I got to use the famous line myself when I ordered after my cousin (for the record it was a pastrami with swiss on rye, yum...).

  • @GSErnie
    @GSErnie 2 года назад +3

    It's always entertaining to watch someone watching "the scene" at the deli. When the movie came out, the talk was about that scene. But the rest of the movie is so good. It's the romcom that others should be measured against.

    Rob Reiner did an interview quite a few years ago and talked about how he cast his mom in the Sally faking it scene to deliver her famous line. He later saw a poll (maybe the American Film Institute) listing the most one liners in film history. In the top five were "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn", "Here's looking at you, kid", "Go ahead. Make my day", ...and he was so proud his mom saying "I'll have what she's having" was right there with them at the top.

    Just stumbled on this, and reading the comments I am floored that not a single person mentions the masterpiece, Annie Hall, with Diane Keaton and Woody Allen.
    This is a very good movie, but Annie Hall is top tier brilliant on every single level.

    I enjoyed your description of good dialog; not everyone gets that there is a weighted balance there. I try to describe it as speaking the way you wish people would talk: succinct, in turns, and with just the right word occurring to the character just in time to say it. Nora Ephron was a master.

    Thanks for this great reaction clip! Together with the British movie 'Four Weddings and a Funeral', this one belongs to my favourite romcoms.
    I admit that I am not a patr(e)on, but since you really seem to like to 'dive into' romance, romcoms, personalities, characters, and even into 'matchmaking' (Carrie Fisher!), you also might want to check out the French movie 'Amélie' (originally called 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain'), made in 2001. It ended up that Rob Reiner wrote most of the female lines and Norah Ephron wrote most of the male lines. Meg Ryan was also uncomfortable with Billy' ad libbing his dialogue, but he kind of coached her along and she got better at playing against his off the cuff, improv performance.

    Lovely reaction, as always. A film you may want to add to your list is Postcards From the Edge, based on the book of the same name, written by … Carrie Fisher! (She may have done the screenplay too, not sure.) it stars Meryl Streep and Shirley McClaine (sp?), and they both do a bang-up job. It’s a comedy with bite. Peace from Ohio … (MacLaine and yes, Carrie did the screenplay. I looked it up.)

    Your discussion of what makes good dialogue is very interesting to me, as a writer myself. Real-life dialogue might evade or be off-topic. And this film manages that, while also at the same time fulfilling some essential characteristics of a good script. In a play, movie, or musical, dialogue must do at least one of two things, preferably both: 1) dialogue reveals character. 2) Dialogue should advance the dramatic action. That second one is tricky in this case, because our heroes spout dialogue we know (hope?) to be false. We want to see our two heroes become a couple, but their dialogue(s) both advance that action and also hold back that action. It's that push/pull that creates most of the dramatic tension here, and it's also what makes the dramatic payoff so worthwhile, when they finally begin to speak the same language (so to speak!) to each other. Furthermore, as dialogue reveals character, we in the audience are aware just how much these two are hiding their true selves. It's all very masterfully done, from the script to the direction to the actors.

    Watch it again, and this time observe the scenery, the background, the clothing, what was considered normal, how relationships where portrayed, the late 80`s "feel" if you will.. It is fascinating how shallow the 80`s are portrayed in movies by the niggling little details people miss because they are just used to how things are today, where the internet exists and tik tok, and people knew what the band Nirvana was.. They didnt when this movie was made... ;)

    Rob Riener is very much a hit or miss director, but boy does he hit with this one ( as do most of his early films ). No matter how many times I've seen it I always leave with wanting more, as it should be. I miss the days of witty rapid fire dialogue. Perfect film, not a frame wasted. Meg Ryan's performance in that scene is hysterical cresting with a smug smirk picking up the fork, genius.
