After watching a few of your reactions, I'm coming to appreciate your insightful comments and keen observations. Top that off with how genuine your reactions feel and are presented, I've become a fan. I particularly liked your comment about "life is tough" and how happy endings are hopeful and inspiring. I would add that, globally, times are tough (and probably to get tougher) right now so channels like yours provide a bit of relief and bright spot to the day. Keep doing what you're doing, and thanks!

There's a lot of great little lines in Romancing the Stone. A great neo-pulp romance and very meta-aware of adventure genre tropes.

I worked on this movie as a gopher, fetching stuff and interpreting (they called me a "production assistant"- funny...).
This movie was filmed in México, I went to the Hotel Xalapa where I lived to party at the bar. When I went to the bathroom, there was Michael Douglas taking a leak, I was surprised that he was shorter than me (I'm 5'10"); I talked to him and he was surprised that I spoke English, and I got the job through his recommendation! Groovy...
I of course developed a huge crush on Kathleen Turner, she's gorgeous and a very nice lady, so I followed her movie career afterwards.
She and Michael Douglas made a sequel to "Romancing The Stone" called "The Jewel of the Nile", and worked together in "The War of the Roses" as well as Danny DeVito, although this one focused more on a couple breaking apart and their hate for each other, but still full of over-the-top shenanigans.
And of course I was blown away by Kathleen Turner in "Body Heat" with William Hurt, where she plays a Femme Fatale. But as a young guy, I felt the heat for sure... 😁
There's another fun movie with Dennis Quaid, and one where she plays a detective called "V.I. Warchowski".

There is a sequel titled "Jewel of the Nile." Not as good, but if you like these characters, you might want to check it out. There is also a dark comedy starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner (and with Danny DeVito as well) titled "The War of the Roses" about the worst divorce ever that you might also want to watch.

    • @tomyoung9049

Jewel of the Nile is terrible because it was written by a Hollywood committee. The woman who wrote this movie unfortunately was killed in a car wreck before the sequel was made.

I like all three of those movies and I think of them as a trilogy even though the last one is an entirely different story but they follow an arc : "Romacing the Stone" is how they met , "Jewel of the Nile" is one of the wild adventures they have had "The War of the Roses" is how it all goes wrong at the end. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito of course portray the three main characters in all three movies.

An aspect that seems to be disappearing from film is theme songs. Along with Alan Silvestri's wonderful score, there was a theme song for this film by Guyanese-British musician Eddy Grant. He had a huge reggae/pop/rock hit in 1982 called "Electric Avenue", and he composed and performed the eponymous theme song for this film:
    ruclips.net/video/dOsVohtbgxc/видео.html
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner reprised their characters for the sequel "Jewel of the Nile"...which also had a great pop-song tie in by Trinidadian-British musician Billy Ocean. The music video featured Douglas, Turner and DeVito as his backup singers.
    ruclips.net/video/-n3sUWR4FV4/видео.html
Turner, Douglas and DeVito teamed up again for the 1989 dark rom-com The War of the Roses, directed by DeVito!

Madison, congratulations on finishing the first draft of your first novel! When you mentioned you could relate to Joan Wilder, I thought it could be because you cry a lot or always run out of tissue. I am glad that's not the case. Whenever I get stuck creatively, I always go back to the movies or music they made me want to be a writer. This could be one of those movies.
Diane Thomas wrote _Romancing the Stone_ on spec while waitressing and sold it in 1979. She was killed very tragically six years later in a car accident riding in the 1985 Porsche Carrera that Michael Douglas had given to her as a present for her work on this movie. As James Dean and others learned the hard way, a Porsche is a difficult car to learn how to handle especially on these California roads with twists and turns. Her boyfriend was driving and the road was wet and he'd been drinking and let the car get away from him. He survived.
This was the only produced screenplay Thomas wrote and despite being rewritten by several men, I don't think it ever lost the touch or perspective she brought to it. For example, Jack Colton doesn't rescue Joan from Zolo in the climax. She fights him herself. I don't think that's a development a lot of male screenwriters or male leads would allow even today.

Have you seen the film Stranger than Fiction with Will Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, and Emma Thompson? I wrote a romance novel back in the 80's. No one took manuscripts unless you had an agent back then so it never got published. The lady who wrote this movie, Diane Thomas, actually died in a plane crash before it was released. Michael Douglas was a friend of hers and fought for years to have this movie made and eventually just agreed to play Jack Colton. But he stayed on as producer. Until this movie, he was mostly known as a producer, not an actor. It’s one of the best chick flicks I’ve ever seen.

I was just about to recommend this movie to you but then I discovered you watched it long before I subscribed. Great match for you.

Classic! I haven't watched this in forever, but definitely fun to rewatch along with you and see you enjoy it so much! I think "Jewel of the Nile" is about equally entertaining, but it's been forever since I've seen that one too. Thanks for the entertainment!

This has always been a favorite in my family. Even to the point when, a few years ago, my parents bought an electric golf cart cart, they named it Pepe and put a mule sticker on it.

Madison wow! That was a heck of a speech you gave after the movie. Your ideas are well thought out, strongly felt and well reasoned...I'm a bit flabbergasted.
Please put me down for a copy of that book, I don't even care what it's about. Some people are just fascinating to listen to.

This is a delightful comedy adventure with Kathleen Turner. If you'd like to see another, I suggest "Undercover Blues" with she & Dennis Quaid.

Best part in the movie: 7yr. old pulls an Indiana Jones move, then takes off n a Cobra & can drive it like Ken Miles

    Madison,
Michael Douglas was always doing "important" movies and decided to do a "fun" one. Kathleen Turner was first in a wonderful sexy movie called, Body Heat with the just-recently-died William Hurt. Maybe watch that on your own time.
One fine day, you've also got to react to Somewhere in Time. You'll love the story, the music and the hotel. Stars writer Christopher Reeve, fresh from Superman and Jane Seymour.

Yes, a great rom-com, excellent chemistry between the cast. The sequel isn't bad, worth to look at it. And how others sayed, please watch War of the Roses.
Btw. the DeVito line about before Batman coming home....8 years later he was the Penguin in Batman returns !
And now, for you as a writer... it's a must to watch Nim's Island !! Have a great time.🙋‍♂️

If you want more Kathleen Turner comedy, beyond her other two with Michael Douglas, check out Undercover Blues, co-starring Dennis Quaid.
