Swayze is a real one, his talent looks and charisma aside he is so loyal, got Whoopie the gig by saying if they did not hire her he would refuse the film. She got Best Supporting Actress as a result. Man was a wonderful warm loyal man
Tony Goldwyn's character Carl Bruner was so hated that he went to a restaurant and the waitress actually refused to serve him. Carl is one of the most hated movie villains of all time.
That's like Paul Reiser in Aliens... there's a story he's told about how his own mother saw the movie and was like "OMG, you're awful" (i'm paraphrasing 😂)
@@RobFMDetroit I suppose it depends on which role you best know an actor for. If you're more familiar with Paul Reiser in _Aliens,_ you'll always see him as a despicable corporate scumbag. If you know him from _Mad About You,_ he's a loveable doofus.
Tony Goldwyn (yes, he is related to the "G" in "MGM"), who played Carl, said that one time he went to a restaurant and was treated very poorly by one of the waitresses there. For her part, she said that she hated him as soon as she saw him, but couldn't remember whether he was like an ex-boyfriend or someone else who had done something bad to her, but she just knew that he was a scumbag. It turned out, as you can probably guess by now, that she remembered his face from _Ghost_ , and treated him as though he were Carl. She apologized profusely while explaining herself, after she had figured it out, and everyone had a good laugh.
Patrick Swayze was always the actor of last resort for his most classic movies. He wasn't even on the radar, but ended up with his greatest roles because other actors turned them down or couldn't fit them in their schedules. Swayze took these unlikely opportunities and turned in iconic, definitive performances, absolutely embodying those characters.
The train ghost explained "your trying to move it with your finger. You ain't got a body anymore you're dead." So Sam wasn't really "touching" objects. Therefore he could not touch Molly. It was basically telekinesis.
Rick Aviles (1952-1995) was the actor who played Willie Lopez. He played this villain part so well, many people forgot or did not know that he was actually a stand up comedian
My favorite line: "It's amazing Molly. The love inside. You take it with you." Just before Sam leaves. He's describing how I have always pictured Heaven should be.

Now you need to check out _Dirty Dancing_ (1987), which actually is a rom-com, and is pretty much the only one, or maybe one of two, that this macho guy (I mean myself) loves. I think it's full of surprises, too, and while it doesn't quite measure up to _Ghost_ , it comes kind of close, and is a must-see 1980s classic starring the late, great, and as you'll see, multi-talented, Patrick Swayze.

"I feel like they're gonna cut back to what's actually happening for comedic effect." - I found this comment super interesting. Of course you would think that, because most modern movies (Marvel, Disney, etc.) never linger in seriousness. They always have to insert a stupid one-liner to break the tension. It's like they've conditioned us to expect a joke in every serious moment. But I guess that's one of the things that makes Ghost (and a lot of other 80's and 90's films) so good... the scene stays serious, there's no cheap joke injected anywhere, and it hits way harder because of it. Mistake that people never notice is Sam opening the door at the psychic's business, when he hasn't learned how to make contact with real world objects, yet.
This came out when I was a teen, and I think it was the first time I learned to appreciate a well-crafted love story, at least since Somewhere in Time. My family had this on laserdisc growing up, so we watched it plenty of times. Carl hadn't intended for Sam to be killed. It's why he was mad at Willy for Sam's murder, to which Willy retorted, "Hey, I did you a FAVOR!" Carl just wanted Sam's MAC codes he kept written on his little book, which allows him to authorize bank transfers for the money laundering for his drug dealer contacts.
Patrick Swazy was a dancer before he was an actor. His mother headed the Houston Ballet. They'd do a week long dance convention in Houston that my younger sister would attend. I watched this film when it came out, at the cinema .Like you I thought this was a really good movie on so many levels, particularly on the power of love and the spiritual and life after death aspects; something special to me after an experience I had just over a year after I lost my eldest brother to cancer . Btw I thought you looked like you could have walled out of the pages of a Jane Austin novel with you hairstyle and your dress which though slightly different looked similar to the Empire Line dresses of the Regency Period.
Two things, Carl didn't "orchestrate" Sams murder, it was incidental, Willie was just supposed to rob Sam of his wallet, and that's what would have only happened, but Sam put up a fight. Second, the character of Sam was written where he wouldn't kill either Willie or Carl, murder is murder, and if Sam had killed either one those baddies, for lack of a better description, would have come for Sam.
Lol, a lovely reaction Madison. You are spot on when you said how ‘invested’ you became with it - I was exactly the same. I saw this at the cinema (rather reluctantly I might add) with my ex wife, who was still swooning over Swayze lol, so I went along to please her ;-) but I have to say, like you I became completely invested in it. It was the sort of film I would never have seen, just not my sort of thing - but there were so many elements to it, you couldn’t help but become wrapped up in it - and it’s all very well done. By the way composer Maurice Jarre was a French man - who composed all of David Lean’s movies between 1962-1984. Yes, a very good film choice, I remember the year before, Spielberg examined similar themes with his film Always (1989) (the last film to feature Audrey Hepburn) which was itself a remake of A Guy Named Joe (1943).
This is one of the purest screenplays of modern times, up there with Back to the Future and The Matrix. Everything just fits so well, it not only tugs at heart strings but is laugh-out-loud funny too. Bruce Joel Rubin won a deserved Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Paul Hogan, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Kline, Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise were all considered for the role of Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze). The screenwriter Bruce Rubin was inspired by Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' in which he wanted to tell a 20th century story told from the perspective of a ghost.👻
And, ironically so was Bruce Willis. He and Demi were married at the time. BRUCE read the script and turned it down. Said it hit too close to home, playing the part with Demi. So, he had to wait about 9 years, to have one his best roles ever. I guess Destiny does play a part in our lives......

Great reaction. The author of this script, Bruce Joel Rubin, considered it part of a trilogy, which includes 2 other films, Jacob's Ladder (1990), and My Life (1993) -all of which, supposedly, came as the result of a dream he had - riding the subway and getting off at a closed, deserted station.
A couple more good Patrick Swayze movies are Dirty Dancing and the original Roadhouse. Especially Dirty Dancing because you will have the "Time of your Life "
Here's some movie suggestions given what you liked here. For Patrick Swayze (I'm a fan too) there's 'Dirty Dancing'. For Whoppie Goldberg there's 'Jumpin Jack Flash'. Finally, if you want a similarly themed movie to this please watch 'Somewhere in Time' (1980) starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.
I don't think Sam was really touching anything, especially not in the normal sense of the word. Remember, the angry train ghost told him he can't but could move things with his mind. He focuses his emotions, concentrates and uses some kind of psychic energy to move things, usually just in quick, violent bursts. Floating the penny took more concentration and it was a light object, but I still don't think he was touching it. He may visually appear to touch and manipulate things with his hands, but since the angry ghost said he could only move things with his mind, I assume it helps him to focus the energy or something if he pretends or visualizes touching the thing.
Random story, not even about me, but when my friend was seeing this in the theater a piece of the theatre's A/C actually fell off of the ceiling and went right through the screen.
@@LukeLovesRose Don't say "No one". Just because you're not part of the discussions doesn't mean no one talks about it. Go to the Wikipedia page and look under the Legacy heading. It gets plenty of recognition. Again... the amount of attention it "deserves" is subjective. It won a lot of awards, yet there are critics and moviegoers who dismiss it as a schmaltzy romance. So who's right?
10:09 The “basic” special effects, especially the shadow demons later on in the film, were both groundbreaking and breathtaking to us original viewers back in 1990.
The lady they first encounter in the bank is Charlotte Zucker, the director's mom. She's also the lady in Airplane! that keeps having trouble putting her makeup on.
Nce to visit with you again, Maddie - delightful reaction as always to a great yarn, told with such heart it's not difficult to set aside the creepier metaphysical aspects. Yes. the principals are all excellent but I've always admired the performance of Tony Baldwyn in the thankless role of Karl, a great study in panic and desperation, often overlooked. Rock on, girl and all the very best with your new book. And RIP Patrick
Karl was played by Tony Goldwyn. (The last name is very similar. 😁) And I completely agree with you. Part of me almost wants to feel sorry for him when he's in the throes of that desperate panic. *Almost* want to feel sorry for him. 😄
Dear Madison, sorry my response is a bit late! Great reaction. as always you are so insightful and catch onto subtilties none of us do. You are the first person to figure about the badguy doing embezzlement. and you're the only person who finally explained to me the thing with the angel. I was always suspicious of it but didn;t know what it signified.
Another good movie in the same genre... "Always" directed by Spielberg And another October-Halloween comedy-horror movie to watch is "Arsenic and Old Lace" with Cary Grant
"Arsenic and Old Lace" is great. As for "Always," in spite of my admiration for everyone involved, I have never been able to like that film. I much prefer the original "A Guy Named Joe."
"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (1947, black and white) starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison is rated 4-5 stars consistently and is a genre classic that you need to enjoy, the genre of a romantic ghost story. OR, if you wish for a little more mystery in your classic ghost stories, watch the 1944 black and white movie with Ray Milland and Gail Russell titled "The Uninvited", also rated 4-5 stars, depending on the reviewer.
I'm so glad that you loved this film, Madison, I loved watching your reaction to it. It's an underrated film in my opinion, it has many elements, Romance, Fantasy, Murder Mystery, Crime Story, Supernatural, which sounds like it should be a mess, but it works beautifully, through great writing, directing, acting, etc. It's one of my guilty pleasures.
@@MadisonKThames Thank you, Madison, I really enjoyed it, as I said it's a guilty pleasure of mine, I own a copy of it too, I don't think that it gets the recognition which it deserves.
You gotta watch Point Break (1991) Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. I was was 13 when it came out. Great action flick/Popcorn Ride. Great movie! I highly recommend and also Red Dawn (1984) another PZ movie with a great ensemble cast!
To be fair, Carl didn't orchestrate Sam's murder. Willy was just supposed to rob him and get the information in his wallet that Carl needed. It was just an unfortunate accident that Sam fought back and got shot in the struggle.
I've seen this film several dozens times since i first saw at 12 or 13 inthe early 90, and in recent years several reactions to it. I still love the comedy, and my eyes still water in places.
Always fun to watch this movie with reaction channels. 33:44 that is frightening! I remember having sleep paralysis nightmares and it felt like something was holding me down while tryin to scream wake up…💯
This 1990 film was directed by Jerry Zucker from a screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin. Zucker had been involved in movies such as “Airplane”, “The Naked Gun”, and “Top Secret!” When Rubin heard Zucker was going to direct this he said he cried because he thought Zucker was going to make this into a comedy.a
These are very trusting, unsuspecting bank employees! I know this was for comedy, but "Rita Miller" was waving red flags all over the place with her performance, and while they thought she was a bit eccentric, they handed over $4 million right away, which is crazy.
Another great movie with Patrick Swayze that also has Keanu Reeves is Point Break. Other movies with Patrick Swayze are Dirty Dancing, Red Dawn, Road House and Steel Dawn, just to name a few.
Amazing movie and the way they created the differnce betwen going to heaven and hell is so powerful. I am always moved by th way Sam is called to a peaceful existence and Willie and Carl are called to a world of evil.
Whoopi Goldberg won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this, she really stole the show from the stars. It was her first and only Oscar, although I've always thought she deserved the Oscar for The Color Purple (1985) personally.
As far as why he can't touch Molly, you have to remember that Sam is technically in a different dimension, the 4th dimension which lies outside of the 3rd dimension where we are. If he focuses, he can pierce threw it or hold a penny, but a nice embrace would be very difficult.
Your reaction to the Harbingers of the Underworld (thats what i grew up calling them) was worth watching this reaction. As a kid, those scenes scared me straight! Sams reaction to the 1st encounter was also priceless, given he never saw them up to that point!
Madison seems to have really enjoy this movie. I saw it in a theater when i came out, and my reaction to the two villains getting what they earned was also horror. There was something for almost everybody in the movie, "Ghost."
If I had to comment on a report card, it would say "Far exceeded expectations". I suspect that like many men, I was dragged to watch this in the cinema by my girlfriend when it first came out, expecting a maudlin romance. But the fusion of romance with comedy and sci-fi and thriller made this special and Whoopi Goldberg's performance was the icing on the cake. Very enjoyable.
This movie is perfect. I've watched it many times through the years. Demi's great in this but my favorite role of her's is in "striptease" adapted from Carl Hiiasen's hilarious book.
I did a few ceramics classes in college, even had my girlfriend in my class one semester. We didn't do anything like the couple's scene in this though. LOL
Good reaction, Maddie. ❤ We played this movie at my theater and even back then I loved audience reactions. I would always go in and listen/watch their reactions to the 'death' scenes. It wasn't the best effects back then but you could still feel the horror. Keep at it. 😊🍿💕

A couple more good Patrick Swayze movies are Dirty Dancing and the original Roadhouse. Especially Dirty Dancing because you will have the "Time of your Life "
Best Ghost romance movie (and TV series) ever is "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."
I cried every time I watched the movie as Patrick Swayze is no longer with us.
Good hypothesis.
Random story, not even about me, but when my friend was seeing this in the theater a piece of the theatre's A/C actually fell off of the ceiling and went right through the screen.
It makes you feel just like you wanted to feel but it gets there in a way you just aren't expecting.
Ghost is another great and underrated classic from the 1990s
who under-rated it?
Underrated? No. In fact, some would say its overrated.
@@bossfan49 No one ever talks about Ghost. No one analyzes it like it deserves
@@bossfan49 Give me a break. Youre blowing this way out of proportion
10:09 The “basic” special effects, especially the shadow demons later on in the film, were both groundbreaking and breathtaking to us original viewers back in 1990.
Ditto is the movie that whenever I watch it brakes my heart.
The lady they first encounter in the bank is Charlotte Zucker, the director's mom. She's also the lady in Airplane! that keeps having trouble putting her makeup on.
Brilliant reaction, Madison, thank you.
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it🙏🏻
It's wild to me that Tony Goldwyn also voiced Disney's Tarzan (except for the iconic roar, courtesy of Brian Blessed)
Divergent Tris's Dad.
@@JulieWestfall-sb5xg Forgot about that one
Nce to visit with you again, Maddie - delightful reaction as always to a great yarn, told with such heart it's not difficult to set aside the creepier metaphysical aspects. Yes. the principals are all excellent but I've always admired the performance of Tony Baldwyn in the thankless role of Karl, a great study in panic and desperation, often overlooked. Rock on, girl and all the very best with your new book. And RIP Patrick
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed the reaction❤️ And I appreciate the well wishes for my new book!🙏🏻
@@MadisonKThames I love your hair, it's so cute 🥰
Karl was played by Tony Goldwyn. (The last name is very similar. 😁) And I completely agree with you. Part of me almost wants to feel sorry for him when he's in the throes of that desperate panic. *Almost* want to feel sorry for him. 😄
@@torontomame Sorry. Correction duty noted and thank you
Nice reaction Madison. Interesting trivia: the screenwriter who wrote this also wrote "Jacobs Ladder" which is a completely different tone (horror)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!😊
Thank you Madison
Dear Madison, sorry my response is a bit late! Great reaction. as always you are so insightful and catch onto subtilties none of us do. You are the first person to figure about the badguy doing embezzlement. and you're the only person who finally explained to me the thing with the angel. I was always suspicious of it but didn;t know what it signified.
Thank you, I appreciate that🙏 So glad you enjoyed my reaction!
@@MadisonKThames 😇Are you also an author? Fiction or non-fiction?
@@emadSciFi Yes, I write fiction.
@@MadisonKThames Great, what genre?
@@MadisonKThames Great, what genre I'm an Sf author myself. But still a beginner of sorts!
Another good movie in the same genre...
"Always" directed by Spielberg
And another October-Halloween comedy-horror movie to watch is
"Arsenic and Old Lace" with Cary Grant
"Arsenic and Old Lace" is great. As for "Always," in spite of my admiration for everyone involved, I have never been able to like that film. I much prefer the original "A Guy Named Joe."
@@TedLittle-yp7uj I like "A Guy Named Joe" and "Always", each have their good points. "Arsenic and Old Lace" is a classic and so much fun.
Spielberg's film Always has a very similar plot. Richard Dreyfuss plays the ghost. Audrey Hepburn plays an angel.
If not already suggested, Always (1989) is another great ghost movie for the month.
Great suggestion!
I love this movie. Pulls at the heart strings. Love your reactions MKT.
Thanks Adam, I’m so glad you enjoyed my reaction!😊
@@MadisonKThames Thank you, Madison, I really enjoyed it, as I said it's a guilty pleasure of mine, I own a copy of it too, I don't think that it gets the recognition which it deserves.
Her shiny face is so distracting.
You gotta watch Point Break (1991) Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. I was was 13 when it came out. Great action flick/Popcorn Ride. Great movie! I highly recommend and also Red Dawn (1984) another PZ movie with a great ensemble cast!
Its not enough that you use initials, but not, you're not even using initials. So confusing. Stop being lazy.
To be fair, Carl didn't orchestrate Sam's murder. Willy was just supposed to rob him and get the information in his wallet that Carl needed. It was just an unfortunate accident that Sam fought back and got shot in the struggle.
Next: Dirty Dancing!
"Damn baby what did you do to your hair?" "Orlando, you like it? It's autumn sunrise" 😂
That you thought the plot was Sam haunting Molly. 😄
Yes a great movie👍👍. I've watched it multiple times.
Incredible it took until now for this to win a poll. It's my second favourite film of 1990 (after Excorcist 3).
Zucker had been involved in movies such as “Airplane”, “The Naked Gun”, and “Top Secret!”
When Rubin heard Zucker was going to direct this he said he cried because he thought Zucker was going to make this into a comedy.a
Such a great movie. A little bit of something for everyone. Forever a classic. Your reaction was infectious, glad you liked it ( how can you not ).
These are very trusting, unsuspecting bank employees! I know this was for comedy, but "Rita Miller" was waving red flags all over the place with her performance, and while they thought she was a bit eccentric, they handed over $4 million right away, which is crazy.
One of the best movies of all time
Another great movie with Patrick Swayze that also has Keanu Reeves is Point Break. Other movies with Patrick Swayze are Dirty Dancing, Red Dawn, Road House and Steel Dawn, just to name a few.
Yeah that's a beautiful movie and perfect reaction to it. Really enjoyed watching vicariously through you for the first time again. 😎❤️👍
Loved the look on your face when Willie got his payback!!!
I was SHOCKED😂
Amazing movie and the way they created the differnce betwen going to heaven and hell is so powerful. I am always moved by th way Sam is called to a peaceful existence and Willie and Carl are called to a world of evil.
Whoopi Goldberg won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for this, she really stole the show from the stars. It was her first and only Oscar, although I've always thought she deserved the Oscar for The Color Purple (1985) personally.
Hi @Maddison and Everyone, sorry I missed you earlier but hope you enjoyed the movie. Not my kind of film but I’ll give it a watch lol 😂
The Shadow Demon vocalizations are the sounds of babies crying slowed down.
1991 Oscar winner for best screenplay and best supporting actress (Whoopi Goldberg)
Sam not killing Carl, Frodo not killing Gollum is what sends you to heaven.
LOL
33:36 Yep, this scared the sh*t out of me too in 1990. 😱
Good reaction, Maddie. ❤
We played this movie at my theater and even back then I loved audience reactions. I would always go in and listen/watch their reactions to the 'death' scenes. It wasn't the best effects back then but you could still feel the horror.
Keep at it. 😊🍿💕
Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it!😊
