    Paul: Only the first one."

Just a note on Hudson. A lot of reactors get upset at his complaining, but I found his comments hilarious. He transcended the discipline of the military and was relatable in that the situation was impossible and frightening. I think another actor doing Hudson wouldn't have delivered the lines as well as Bill Paxton, and it made for a little more meat to the scenes instead of having everyone just saying yes sir throughout the movie.

The scene where Ripley threatens the eggs and the queen backs off was interesting. They formed a sort of non-verbal truce in that moment. All the queen cared about was her eggs, so Ripley and Newt could have retreated and left. And of course all the aliens (and eggs) would have been destroyed a while later in the explosion of the facility.
But Ripley CHOSE to break that truce and escalate the situation. She burned up the eggs and then shot at the queen. She enraged the queen who then pursued them. All of the mayhem that followed was 100% Ripley's fault.

@@Mr.Ekshin Ripley let’s off a warning blast from the flamethrower, the Queen signals her drones to back off and allow Ripley to leave. The egg opens, Ripley sees that as an act of aggression and precedes to engulf the nest in flames. So Ripley didn’t choose to break the truce, she felt that the hatching facehugger was the truce breaker and retaliated.
Xenomorph lore says they have a ‘hive mind’ and can communicate telepathically, so it’s also likely the Queen signalled the egg to hatch.

Aliens has a directors cut you maybe interested in. It shows additional scenes at hadleys hope before they find the Aliens. It also has some interesting scenes with automated gun turrets and a bit more with Hicks and Ripley.
The biggest scene which shouldn’t have been cut IMHO is we learn Ripley had aN 11 year old daughter Amanda who passed away 2 years before Ripley was found.
This scene directly sets up the quite good horror survival game Alien Isolation. Where you play as Amanda in her mid 20’s working for the company and trying to find out what happened to her mother. The game looks and feels like you are in the original movie. It even includes DLC where you can play as the original crew voiced by the actors on the Nostromo being chased by the xenomorph.

@Move_I_Got_This those scenes were cut because the run time was over 2 and a half hours, and supposedly “no one wants to sit in a theatre for that long”. The ‘special edition’ is the version Cameron intended to be shown (that’s why he filmed those scenes), but the scenes that were cut, as you said, didn’t take too much away from the story, but they do give more context to the development of Ripley’s and Newt’s bond, and why the aliens are crawling through the ceiling to get to the group (they gave up trying to get past the sentry turrets).

@Move_I_Got_This I saw Aliens in the theater in 86 and the scene where Ripley finds out about her daughter was definitely not there. It wasn’t until I taped a version off the tv that I saw that scene and the ones with the automated sentries.
For me I’m glad I saw the theatrical cut first and then the extended editions. The pacing in the theatrical version was tighter and I felt like appreciated the extend edition more after seeing the theatrical cut.

The interesting scene is when Ripley and the Queen meet for the first time. The Alien warriors are closing in on her and Newt and Ripley threatens the eggs with the flame-thrower. The warriors back off but then after a short pause an egg opens - thereby breaking the “agreement” between Ripley and the Queen.
I’m mostly envious of someone enjoying a great movie for the first time. I’ve seen this movie so many times I forget how amazed I was the first time I saw it.

  • @oxhine
    @oxhine 2 года назад +3

Hey, Madison! This is one of the best sequels ever made!
Unfortunately, you didn't see the superior SPECIAL EDITION version which has the Amanda Ripley scene, the functioning colony scene, Newt's family's discovery of the derelict ship scene, the automated gun scene, the Hudson speculation about queen ants scene and the name exchange scene. These deleted portions enhance the movie greatly and the Special Edition is the cut James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver themselves prefer!
The future Ripley inhabits is implied to be a dystopic corporatocracy. The most pervasive and powerful corporate entity is the Weyland-Yutani Company, a 22nd-century version of the British East India Company of the 17th- to 19th-centuries. It is a multinational conglomerate involved in robotics, interstellar transport and terraforming with a stake in every colony world. The Company is the TRUE VILLAIN of the Alien universe. Ash and Burke were following a secret corporate mandate to obtain a xenomorph specimen in order to profit from research and weaponization. In the "AvP" films, you actually meet the company founders before their merger, Mr. Weyland and Ms. Yutani.
    Some trivia:
The picture of Ripley's elderly daughter in the Special Edition is actually Sigourney Weaver's real-life mother!
The late Al Matthews, who played Sgt. Apone, was a true-blue Marine who was the first black man to be promoted to Sergeant in the Corps during his service in Vietnam!
The knife-trick scene was originally supposed to be performed by Lance Henriksen alone but he convinced director James Cameron to surprise Bill Paxton by involving him as they shot the scene! Paxton's wide-eyed terror is completely real!
Fan favorite Vasquez is played by non-Hispanic Jenette Goldstein! She goes out like a warrior and enables Gorman to reclaim his honor.
Ms. Goldstein now is the proprietress of a Los Angeles-based boutique that specializes in bespoke large-size bras! The motto of her company is, "At Jenette's, the alphabet begins with 'D'."!
Bishop's programming to not harm humans or allow them to come to harm through inaction is ripped straight from Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics!
Carrie Henn, who played Newt, never acted again but became a schoolteacher. She still maintains a correspondence relationship with Sigourney Weaver thirty-four years later.
The late Bill Paxton, who has the distinction of being attacked on screen by an Alien, a Terminator and a Predator, will NEVER be forgotten for his reading of the line, "Why don't you put HER in charge?", referring to little Newt in her oversized helmet. Lol.
"ALIEN 3" is a DIVISIVE film but it's an EXCELLENT entry in the series. ABSOLUTELY SEE IT!!! It's directed by David Fincher and features Charles Dance and Charles Dutton. It's brutal, fast-paced, has some extraordinary scares, provides new insight into the creature and concludes the story elegantly. I strongly encourage you NOT TO SKIP IT! Make sure you see the ASSEMBLY CUT (Special Edition with longer runtime). "Alien Resurrection" is the optional one because it's a hot mess except for one cool aquatic sequence. The ambitious prequels, "Prometheus" and "Covenant", mark director Ridley Scott's return to the series but they are mostly good JUST for Michael Fassbender's performances. Scott demystifies the creature and unsatisfyingly attempts to address who the elephant-headed pilot of the derelict spacecraft was.
    VIEWING ORDER:

Great reaction. It cant be understated how great the art/lighting/sound design for this universe is. I once walked into an art gallery which had a corridor decorated like the movie - dark, industrial, strobe lighting, yellow beacons, hazard tape and that warning klaxon sound and I swear the hair on the back of my head stood up immediately. Halfway along the corridor was a closed 'hatch' with a darkened window. When I put my nose against the glass to peer in and the unseen guy in the 'Alien' suit on the other side whacked his huge silver head against the glass I swear my heart stopped dead!.

I think you'll enjoy that more than moving on to Alien 3, anyway... it often pays to be suspicious of a third franchise instalment 😬... and speaking of which, I'd heartily recommend watching The Terminator and Terminator 2, if you haven't already seen them!
Oh, and 15:50 "Ripley in the Batmobile" - your comment is super-appropriate, as the 1989 Tim Burton-directed Batman movie was filmed in part in the same location as the alien hive (Acton Power Station, where the Batman crew was surprised to find the Aliens sets were still standing)... but not only that; in Batman, the Batmobile drives along the exact same place as the APC does in the shot when you made the comment!

While so many people say it is bad, it is really not. It is made by one of the greatest directors of our time, David Fincher (who did Seven amongst other movies). And even when the movie had tons of problems during its production because the studio was so money hungry and they used really bad super-early CGI in some scenes for me it is a master piece of suspense. A good considered review highlighting your interest in character development. I find Hollywood's '80s aliens really interesting - the two most prominent being this one and the predator. Gone are Speilberg's benevolent greys to be replaced by these true 'monsters' from space - a kind of return to '50s Hollywood aliens. We never get to see the alien perspective although in this movie a character says: 'how can they turn the power off - they're just animals' which implies we are dealing with a level of intelligence. Would this change our perspective of them - from carnivores driven by instinct to organized amoral murderers? I think our incarnations of 'aliens' tells you a lot about the culture that invents them. Perhaps we can add 'The Borg' and 'The Terminator' to this list as incarnations of genetic and political determinism?

Speilburg himself very nearly was a big part of the 80's hostile aliens cinema. His follow-on from 'Close Encounters' was going to be a movie called 'Night Skies', very loosely based on the Hopkinsville Goblins incident. Soemwhere in pre-production, he decided to do a more family-orineted sci-fi movie and 'E.T.' was the resulting movie.

In the Director's cut of the movie, a couple scenes that were deleted from the theatrical release were added back to the film.
The first important scene is right after Ripley's bad dream and just before the scene where she is brought in front of the board of inquiry for destroying the Nostromo at the end of the first movie.
In the deleted scene, Ripley has recovered from hypersleep and she's in the hospital solarium looking out a window at a beautiful forest. As the camera pulls back and Burke enters the room, we realize that Ripley has been looking at a giant high definition display of a forest scene while waiting for Burke. She turns the display off and Burke tries to get her focused on her upcoming testimony in front of the board of inquiry.
Ripley's having none of it, she wants to know if Burke has any information about her daughter, who would be an elderly woman by this time, 57 years later...
Burke gives her the bad news that her daughter Amanda was killed 6 months prior to Ripley's rescue. Burke shows her a grainy printout photo of an older woman and Ripley breaks down in tears at the loss. Amanda was only 10 years old the last time they were together and Ripley had promised her that she'd be home by her 11th birthday.
It is a crime that this scene had to be removed for the theatrical release and such a joy to see it in the Director's Cut.
The other deleted scene was interesting but not necessary. It showed the auto-guns in action, deployed by the Marines cutting through an Alien attack in "the tunnels" leading up to the MedLab face-hugger attack scene on Newt and Ripley after Burke betrays them...
The movie works without the scene of Ripley finding out about her daughter's death, but with it left in, other storylines take on new meaning.
I really enjoyed your thoughts and reaction to my favorite movie of all time.
Because you're not busy enough, I'd love to see your reactions to new (new to you anyway) music and songs that you may not have ever heard .... So get on that right away, lol.....
Seriously, thanks for having us over for movie night, and much success to you and your channel!

2:53: Note the gun Ripley used at the end of Alien is still stuck under the door. James Cameron focuses on details.

The director's cut has much more explanation and development of Ripley/Newt.

Stop right here.. don't watch alien 3. Just leave it where it is here. Don't watch the next one or you'll regret it.

'Very succinct analysis and a nice reaction. 'Glad you watched this one.
It's your call, of course, but for my money, i'd move on to other films.
Franchise, smanchise. It's so rare that you get a great sequel... beyond this one, it's Burger King, McDonald's. Better to move on.
If you're looking for more great Sci-fi, i would like to recommend two excellent films:
    UNDER THE SKIN (2013)
    Scarlett Johansson and
    EX MACHINA (2014).
    Two really top-notch films.
    I'm enjoying your reactions -
    Carry on

I disagree. AvP connects the two franchises well.

      You're entiled. Not for me.
To get to AvP, you need to wade through P2, ALIEN REDEMPTION, etc. I think the greatness ends here.
I'd much rather see TERMINATOR and T2 reacted to. PREDATOR as well. Beyond that it just becomes Marvel redundancy. But that's my opinion. Obviously, not everyone will agree. There is good Sci-fi out there that didn't fly out of a comic book.

      @@rimasmuliolis1136 I disagree. The AvP1 might.
The Avp2 is straight garbage and an abomination!

Michael Biehn was also in the original Terminator. He went back in time to save Sarah Connor.

fun fact: Alien, Predator & Bladerunner are all the same universe. Watching them chronologically is a mind bender.

In the extended you find out in the first movie she had s daughter the same age as Rebecca and that she died 2 years before Ripley made it back.
