Hello! If you’re watching, please forgive the echo effect. Some of my earlier videos have this effect, it was an editing mistake as I often use this effect for projects unrelated to this channel. And because my ear was so used to hearing the echo I didn’t notice! This effect is not on my later videos. ☺️💖

As follower of Čech/Slovak cinema for many years I really enjoyed your video essay.
Also, Věra Chytilová's name is pronounced sublty different. The *Ch* makes the sound we hear in the Scottish word *loch.* To get that same Ch sound, which you make, the Čech's place a grapheme over the C like so, Č. Also, the á in her name makes the final letter *'a'* longer, like this, aaa. So the way you say Chytilová would be written as Čytilova in Čech.

There's one more big twist at the end: the last words written on the screen roughly translates to "This film is for those who are only upset by the sight of crushed lettuce" and then there is a picture of the atomic explosion. So the director makes us reflect whether we are upset about the right things and if our emotional focus really should be on two girls who hang from the chandelier.

Even today we still see these archiac troupes play out..
The female that does little in society, claism they are opressed, and acts cruelly in nature outside of an aobjective view point o the act, meanign the solution of hte problem is easy, but the problem lies at the heart of hte issue and its relation. the further it erodes the more significant it comes to error. IE spoilt humans can turn rotten.. So... I do agree that humans an have misplaced value, but hanging fro ma chandelier as a normalcy woudl be ludricrus regardless of gende,r but as an expose of art to portray something sure why not. We can see the identical play out of this nonsense every year of every generation, and evne other more deviant systems. its a most bizarre planet, where.. simpyl stating... terms and vlaue and what you want woudl protect those things that peopel want. IE: she wants kids. have kids. etc. meh.. instutional feminims and its viases lead to the extemination of women in a suicides of not having hcidlrne simply for ma based of a data input system that is in error, to mislead, and thus obeyed it as a higher form, denying what hse is, this is damage to the species, so logic and discussion was being denied from mediated forms as such like these and cotninues on toda,y like a cult, we are so smart, comepltely damaging relation fo systems.

Nhyes, when we could take in the proper messaging and be glad about goofy happenstance like in the film Juno by Diablo Cody.
And it's such an archaic way of thinking, to refer to "pushing boundaries". The only thing that creates boundaries is the fact you're not truly pushing them, or your work wouldn't even qualify as a feature film. The Fountain is not a clever sculpture, it's a self-own mistaken as a critique of some "boundaries", that clearly failed to bind your freedom to appreciate the craft and from involved. And attempt to produce art falling into being the most EXTREME production of disposable media. That is what these "art" pieces are for trying, kitsch. Appearing as art IS the framing that makes it kitsch.

In the 90’s Lisa Carver and I were in a performance art rock opera touring freak show called Suckdog that was like living Daisies 24-7 while doing the shows and behind the scenes on tour.
We didn’t see Daisies before we did Suckdog. But we looked like them too. I’m the blonde with the flower crowns and Lisa is the brunette with ponytails. We broke hearts (and bones) everywhere we went.
We would do the shows to promote and sell our publishing endeavors because there was no internet.

Daisies is one of those films that’s really made it’s mark in it’s influence on filmmaking instead of being a financial success or a cultural phenomenon. Regardless I dig your perspective and think you have a great sense historical context in how revolutionary showcasing young women how capable of being absurdly carefree and unmoored from male submission still is and was then. I also recommend Beauty and the Beast, it's not a new wave movie, but it's definitely an unforgettable experience for me. I watched this "fairytale" as a child and couldn't sleep for a week. I also like Smoke from Tomáš Vorel, totally different vibe than previous movies, weird but somewhat a cult musical in Czechia from the 80s. And from a different kind of movies suitable for Halloween time, I also love the aesthetic of Tajemství hradu v Karpatech (The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians) and Adéla ještě nevečeřela (Adela Has Not Had Her Supper Yet) from Oldřich Lipský. These movies aren't like Daisies, but if you like weird costumes and a melancholic atmosphere, you might like some of them.

So many great talents coming out of the Prague school of film .. and the work of the writer Bohumil Hrabal was a great source of inspiration for many of the filmmakers..maybe if you saw the film 'pearls of the deep" 5 different stories, 5 different directors and all written by bohumil Hrabal you may enjoy that.. FGS, I just found your channel earlier today as I was scrolling and looking for inspiration. Then some nostalgia and tears hit me like a wall of memories. Yes. I started with your video analysis of Uptown Girls. I began to binge-watch other of your videos and found this gem. Thank you so much for introducing us to Daisies. This film looks magical and yet so realistic! Love it! I can't wait to look it up and watch it in its entirety.
I'm a film and theatre buff type of person too. 😊 I'm always on the lookout for new genres and out-of-the-box movies and plays. Many years ago my aunt took us kids to see a movie about princesses and unicorns. I wandered off in the dark into another showing and found a very wacky, serious, and yet funny movie Bicentennial Man. I loved it and found it quite unique. Much later in the day, I got grounded but I didn't care much. Ha! Ha! I found my own niche at that time. As I grew older I searched for other films such as Four in the Afternoon (1951), La Jetée (1962) Narrated by Jean Négroni, Miracle of Marcelino (1955), and Negative Space (Short Film) by Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata, and many more. And no I'm not Catholic or Christian but these movies introduced me to a whole other spectrum of international films and learned some of the languages.
I'm so happy to have found your channel. I am happily subscribed and can't wait for more!

I absolutely love the fact that somebody speaks about this film! And my favourite Malá mořská víla (The Little Mermaid)! OMG! Also, other movies like this are some of the film fairytales we have (unfortunately most of them are not subtitled, as far as I know). Some examples are: Kráska a zvíře (The Beauty and the beast), O Janovi a podivuhodném příteli, Třetí princ, Popelka (not a really new wave film, but beautiful nevertheless), Deváté srdce, Tři zlaté vlasy děda Vševěda…
There is also a lot of movies about a life during that time, most of them banned immediately after the Soviet invasion in the 68’. For example The Nightingales on the string, Archa bláznů, Až přijde kocour (When the Cat Arrives), Extasis, Černý Petr, Closely Watxhed Trains, Fireman’s ball (though I never liked that one), Hra o jablko (by Věra Chytilová), Každý den odvahu…
These were mostly “tresor films”, locked away from distribution, so many of them, though brilliant, were never truly appreciated by the general public. Many of them can be found on movie festival sites, though, and some are on Netflix or HBO:D
And if you happen to underatabd Czech, our national TV usually streams some of the good ones for free on its site: ivysílání.cz ;)

I don't think this is part of the Czech new wave movement per se, but the 1988 surrealist Czech version of Alice in Wonderland is great. It's called Alice or Něco z Alenky, written and directed by Jan Švankmajer.

I really like that this video highlights a new wave movie that's outside of France. For a long time I didn't know about New Wave cinema that wasn't restricted to France or New Hollywood . New Wave happened all over; inspiring new technologies and techniques.

Věra Chytilová is pronounced "VJE-ra CHI-tjil-o-vaa", where 'j' is like 'y' in 'year' and 'ch' is like the 'ch' in the Scottish (or German) 'loch', the 'r' is tapped, the 'o' is short and the final 'a' is long. 🙂

  • @Gosudar
    @Gosudar 11 месяцев назад +2

That was lovely. If you like Chytilova, I highly recommend The Apple Game (Hra o jablko). This is IMHO her best movie. Dáša Bláhová is just brilliant in this. And Jiří Menzel , one of the greats of the Czech new wave, proves his acting chops in this one.

This movie is iconic. Along with another Czech new wave movie The girl on the broomstick. Speaking of their childish mannerisms... there's a scene in which they're jumping around on a field. Personally I think Sonic youth was inspired by that scene, because Kathleen Hanna looks and acts that way in the Bull in the heather video.

So many people I raved about this masterpiece to and tried to get them to watch it, and most didn't get past the first half hour., shaking their heads & going: "OK Laika, whatever you say..." I had slightly better luck with the Italian pop-art zaniness of The 10th Victim, which had a plot and stuff

I love Daisies. Discovered it about ten or so years ago, at the same time I discovered Celine et Julie vont en bateau (which is a good companion piece to Daisies). I just upgraded to the Criterion blu-ray of Daisies this summer. It was interesting to watch it in the omnipresent shadow of Barbie, which did great for the men who run Mattel, Warner Media and its parent company AOL. Daisies, on the hand, is subversion personified. No corporate boardrooms involved.

Well, I am glad to see more people talking about Czech stuff, but that is not how you say Chytilová. The Ch is like Ch in Challah or Channukah, the y is an e sound, the ti is squeezed into a sound that is difficult to describe but easy to show when spoken aloud.

Interesting....never seen this but the mood (bar cpmedy) reminded me of a film from Switzerland called Strawberrie Dreams (I'll have to double check on that title but I think I'm close if not on point) makes me wonder of the trends floating among film producers back then. Today the only thing drastically changed would be CGI & I suspect in the near future AI will be the new trend/mood. Curious stuff.
