Always wondered why they added the awful character Elliott that Rue and Jules are made to fight each other over. The director probably just wanted to make the characters get "turned straight" by him. Just let the girls have their own relationship without throwing a man in there. Disgusting.

I think Petra’s work on season 1 is brilliant, and it’s obvious that it wasn’t there when making season 2. Especially when the women are shown as truly toxic, violent, and dramatic. And don’t get me wrong, the relativity of the messiness of those characters is what makes the show special, but you can tell a man wrote all of those nasty fights and lengthy and sometimes violent sexual scenes.

He stole successfully, I'm not even joking, he put together a multitude of factors that he knew would work well, and managed to tie it all back to him. He should've been a producer but he wanted to be creatively regarded. He did all this because he can, his parents are wealthy and successful and he grew up knowing he could be whatever he wants to be, that's how it works in those circles. And he also had quite a lot of luck. Unfortunately that's the formula that works insanely well and a ton of "geniuses" did just that.

in a way it makes sense that the “euphoria aesthetic” was created by a woman. I think that type of indie sleaze vibe comes across as way less male-gazey and more authentic. it’s completely changed the way I see euphoria (season 1) ever since I found out about it
it is such a slap in the face for hbo to brush off the allegation by saying “euphoria was inspired by an Israeli show”. literally the original euphoria has a completely different visual aesthetic and seemingly a lot of the characters are completely unrecognizable. the bizarre pr-bs explanation only draws more attention to the fact that SOMEONE had to have been the driving force behind such a major (feminine) change. It's so humiliating and dismissive of any emotions of anger or injustice women feel. What kills me is that these emotions are experienced exactly the same in men. It infuriates me that anyone would still think that Frankenstein comes from a man. The creature is so obviously a stand-in for the way women were treated: A creature who is brilliant and curious and kind, but is hurt and rejected again and again because of its physical appearance, barred from the learning and respect it desperately craves. So it becomes a monster whose only option is to take a mate and breed. The way it kills Frankenstein's fiancée feels like the battle that might have gone on in Mary's soul between who she was and what society expected her to be. Hell, Percy Shelley became as famous as he did PURELY because of Mary's advocacy of his writing after he died.

As a girl I thought she was whiney and useless, but as an adult it is quite clear that the poor girl was basically brought to be a wife for Victor. And then while he's off trying to create life-how dare a woman be involved in such a process?-she is at home trying desperately to keep things together. (Note, I don't mean that in a TERF way. It deeply reflects on the responsibility we have for bringing life into the world and on what caretaking means. The science aspect is important but forefronted in most adaptation over anything else. Lesson: Don't share your ideas until it's out there for everyone to see all at once. When they see it, they'll know it's your work. Yes, you want to feel needed and heard but it can get women into situations like this. Have a mind always set on doing business or else you're a moving target, easy to manipulate.
Men are envious of women. They feel women don't deserve it, that the world doesn't expect you to succeed... and that it's alright if you don't because you're JUST a woman. In their minds, the weight of the world is on their shoulders and therefore feel they have the right to take what's yours. It's disgusting and pathetic.

Like, it’s sad as in it’s sad to see something I’ve gone through that was horrific and killed a big part of me, so often used as a “tragic and beautiful” subject matter for artworks by male artists. There are SO many works that feature female trauma as the literal subject matter, executed in very passive, voyeuristic ways, where the woman is usually on display to be viewed in this act that is happening to her. And that’s sad. As a victim of assault, and I said it seems to point to a disconnect a lot of men have had to female trauma. To them it’s something they can disconnect from.

Symbolism. A flower crossed by a sword, can also mean rape.
Is not always about “getting horny” about it. In fact is never about seen rape as something sexual. It has many symbolisms.
We literally have as the symbol of our western identity, a bloody dude in a cross. We have Martirs in the Catholic Church seen as saints.
Promethus, Sisiphus, Osiris, and many other mythological characters are either physically punished, or killed , burnt alive , tortured etc. Is not only women, in fact Id say it’s mostly mostly men who are depicted in those ways. All across different religions. Suffering and pain are universal and part of the human experience. Rapes are a real thing and art will represent what it’s deemed, the worst thing that can happen to a woman. And yea it can be artistic. She WAS credited. The reason she wasn't praised was because her invention was too far ahead of its time for people outside the scientific community to understand. People in the 40s had no idea what kind of impact wi-fi would have in the future. However, she and her co-inventor did receive the patent in 1942. They didn't have the luxury of getting hung up on accolades when the war was raging. The allies were racking up heavy casualties at the hands of Nazi submarines. As a Jewish woman living in America, Heddy basically gave her invention to the US Navy for the sake of defeating Hitler.
As cringey as it sounds today, she was told to go out and make appearances for the war effort because she was a well-known actress and considered one of the most beautiful, exotic women to ever step in front of a camera. She was one of many celebrities who were encouraged to do fundraising in WW2.
Heddy Lamar became world famous for the scandal of appearing nude in the 1933 art house classic, Ecstasy. A few years later she would be used as the model for both Disney's Snow White and the Catwoman. Today, she's better remembered for her technical innovations than her acting career. And thankfully, she lived long enough to see herself recognized for her contributions.

I don’t like some of the things she has said and done, but she does often speak the truth on things like what you mentioned
She’s an amazing musical talent and doesn’t really have anyone else doing what she does in the level she does it. It’s frustrating that men like Kanye can be considered musical gods and placed on a cultural pedestal for so long while opening courting controversy, but Azaelia only got credit for one great song and then was shunted to the side. Nothing she has said or done has been as bad as Kanye or Bieber at his height of grossness, but if you’re a black woman with shitty takes you don’t get the same opportunities

Levinson also gets the credit where his actors have shaped the characters.
It's legitimately great that he gave Hunter Schafer and the others room to give feedback and suggestions, to push the characters into a more informed, realistic portrayal. Jules's character in season 1 is fantastic because of this - because she is Hunter's creation. But the actors don't get a writing credit or anything. Levinson is largely seen as the "auteur", the genius mind behind it all.

Sadly in the industry the credit rarely gets to the people that deserve it. In my opinion the end result is the most important and directors should listen to everyone's opinion on the show. But in reality you're told to mind your own business and later you see your work uncredited. In my op at the end there is your name behind the label of director, so why are they so protective of the free floating ideas idk. You could say in interviews and on social media- hey this person actually helped a lot with this, and your reputation won't be lost at all- the opposite. But I guess they have no self esteem and egos too big for that to happen.

As time goes on and they move further away from Petra’s framework of the show (which was apparently the only thing holding it together. Petra’s aesthetics are the main reason it’s so famous), the show will get worse and worse and obviously eventually people will stop tuning in. We all saw how the Idol turned out. They have this legacy of being a supporter of indie filmmakers, but then did nothing to advocate for the women they likely helped hire to work on these projects. I think if nothing else, A24 is big yet small enough that some public pressure could convince them to change internally vs the network which often gets 100 percent of the blame when it’s more often 60-40.

Bro, I can't believe that this is the actual reason why the season 2 was so different from season 1. It when from a "teen" show that touched real and hard problematics inside of a fantastic world to a more edgy and generic "teen" show. Even the visual aesthetics changed a lot, now it looks like it wants to replicate 70s indie movie style or maybe the 90s neo modern.
At first I though it was bc Sam Levison realized that after the first season he gained a lot of respect from the academy and the audiencie, so he though he didn't have to write a coherent history anymore or doing a deep dive into the the problematics that wanted to show at first and he could do whatever he wanted bc people would still watch Euphoria. But now I know the thruth, and it's even more disapointing.

Great video with many examples, thank you!! It's so unfair what has been happening. One thing I hate about it, is that because women have been so overlooked and men represented as THE artists and inventors, there is also a kind of internalized misogyny where I find myself deep down being surprised a woman could have done something. I hate it so so much. It impacts the choices women make right now and their confidence, especially if you do not have female role models around you. Kids should get into contact (probably via school) with women who work in these kinds of fields to eliminate any doubts about womens' abilities created by this elimination of women.

Honestly all of this is making me look at Assassination Nation differently which is one of my favorite movies. But between Euphoria & The Idol, he’s stolen the creative vision of women twice so who’s to say he doesn’t have more under his belt. Even worse, the main constant for him is this voyeuristic gaze of young women and girls being sexually abused.
Because Assassination Nation has a rlly good theme of how social media can turn people into savages in some way but is that message even from him?

This amazing video and overall history of women arts being taken away from them reminds me a lot of Lauryn hill time in the fugees as a hip hop fan. When the group dropped their first album it flopped bc according pras Michael (1/3 members) said the label gave pras and wycelf Jean only creative control where they were trying to emulate the gangsta rap of the time in the early 90s, the album flopped so bad they were close to getting dropped but their A&R saved them under the condition of Lauryn given more creative control for their second album. She was the mastermind behind the score from taking inspiration from 1930s-1940s radio shows for cinematic dialogue interludes to combining Caribbean music and hip hop music to adding in her singing more to the different samples and interpretations, not only did it help the score become a huge success but it changed the sound of hip hop forever, but Lauryn barely gets her credit which is insane bc you can hear that on her own solo albums miseducation of Lauryn hill and mtv unplugged 2.0

Hi, loved this deep dive into the history of womens work, and would like to expand a bit into Sofonisba's story.
Alonso Sánchez Coello wasn't a front to hide Sofonisba Anguissola's work. He himself was one of the court painters, and they collaborated often. In fact, the way we redescovered her work was by realizing that Alonso's paintings were oddly inconsistent in style (a.k.a. in reality half of them weren't actually done by him, but by Sofonisba). Most of their paintings aren't signed because no one really signed their work back then. In life she was extremely apppreciated and well regarded, but after her death she was forgotten and her artwork began to be misattributed, since she wasn't the official court painter. It's been wonderful to see her back in the history books where she belongs.
