It’s kind of strange how these toxic relationships get romanticized. I dated someone like that in my 20s. He would leave and not come home for days with no warning. It was emotionally and physically exhausting. The highs are high but the lows are so fucking low. I appreciate that you included the dark side of their relationship. I’ve always resented the traditional concept of a muse. Hearing Anna diminish her own accomplishments was disheartening. Godard’s work wouldn’t be the same without her.
As I listen to the beginning it sounds so dark. Like everything not said you could see how easily like was she trafficked? She was told to go live in a specific cheap hotel, then this ad woman "spots" her. Then he picks her from an ad which can basically be a catalogue for these men.
@@FlowerPower-cf2fpmy thoughts exactly, I'm a petite model and staying away from these sketchy characters is a constant struggle because they usually hire us for more indie shoots which are often less organised/professional
as someone who knew her personally it always disappointed me how much she hid in his shadow. i dont think while she was alive she truly appreciated not only how loved she was but how much people truly wanted to know about her. i'd like to think that now she knows, i hope at least
I absolutely adore Anna Karina. I'm not as big of a Godard fan, he's really hit or miss for me but Anna's performances in his films are always stunning no matter what I think about the films.
Godard thought the same as you about his movies and about Anna 😍

It's likely you wouldn't know she existed without him. Had it been a different writer/director she mostly worked with, one who asked her to play cliche characters, the roles you enjoyed her in likely wouldn't have been as unique and remarkable.

Une femme est une femme might be the best introduction to Godard! As far as their personal relationship goes, the newspaper story in the cafe sounds like it really set up a dynamic of narcissistic abuse. Rest in peace, both of them. Subscribed!
That interviewer is unbearable! As a French person myself, I can attest that this is not a cultural difference in the flow of conversation - he keeps cutting her off and talking over her, horrible job. Of course, male interviewers tend to do this to female guests, but it clearly was worse at the time (or with this particular one), and it's really grating to sit through when you speak the language and you can tell how much he's rushing her.
I’ve noticed this in a lot of interviews of men interviewing starlets in the 50s-60s. I recall this interview but also there’s a specific interview with Audrey Hepburn where she is consistently cut off and rushed, as well as Marilyn Monroe. It’s so frustrating to watch you’re right!

While I certainly think that Godard + Karina is one of the more significant director-leading lady partnerships in film history, I don't think I'd rank them above Josef von Sternberg + Marlene Dietrich, Michelangelo Antonioni + Monica Vitti, or Ingmar Bergman + Liv Ullman - maybe even John Cassavetes + Gena Rowlands.
Very good video. I guess we all have complicated lives. I was never familiar with her. I had heard her name before. I liked your reference to running through the museum. That scene was copied years later on another move about French cinema with Eva Green called "The Dreamers". Thank you again.
"Alphaville" is a lot of fun. Sort of a combination of a '40's detective movie and the original "Star Trek". Her last movie for Godard was actually the futuristic "Anticipation" segment of "The Oldest Profession" ('67), a 6 part comical anthology of the history of sex work (from pre-history to the year 2000!), with different writers, directors & casts for each.
