@@javierromero1092 Depends on the engine and what kind of driving you do. If you burn a small amount of oil say a little under a quarter quart every 300 miles from frequent high revving,stop and go city driving or racing the car that's absolutely normal.

Or people could learn to change oil at proper intervals to prevent wear and not cause problems in the first place. In a VQ you shouldn't ever go past 3-4k miles and always use high quality advanced full synthetic oil. Always premium gas. My last went over 300k miles, not a drop of burning or leaking oil when I sold it. Probably still out there on the road if it didn't get trashed by the new owners.

CVT transmission hasn't been perfected, add this into the equation and reliablity is out the door.
150k miles on a 2014 Maxima and it's still running strong! I change the oil at every 5k miles and CVT fluid at every 30k miles. Agree it's the worst transmission, but it has good mpg though. Just gotta know how to take care of it.

You missed out. these engines turned out to be as reliable as the sun. Nissan/Infiniti simply doesn't know how to make a bad engine.

I'm a professional electrical engineer and I agree 100%. Sometimes engineers do ridiculous things just because they can, not because they should. Actually, it's more likely marketing is pressuring engineering to produce something "appealing".
And other times they have a loaded weapon pointed at there heads and they have to move or die.
Regulations can have terrible consequences.
The 44th POTUS rolled out so much new and improved regulation, it nearly broke every system.
Hey Randy what does an electrical engeneer have to do with car engines,I also like Scotty,most of the time I agree with him but this time he might be wrong.if we were to listem to you guys out there we'd be still riding horses and horse drawn carts. Nissan has been testing this new technology for more than four years,don't you think the should know better than destroy their own name and brand,especially with so many cheap good engines in the market today.Scotty could wait a couple of years to seee what happens with this type of engine and do you know why I say this because what would happen if this engine turns out to be a wonderful piece of technology...just my grain of salt.
Electrical engineers have a whole lot to do with engines now-a-days. Nothing happens in a vehicle without the ultimate "permission" of the ECU. Your engine RPM, fuel ratios, timing, and much more is determined by the electronics systems.
Modern cars have literally dozens (maybe even 100+) input signals, such as - engine temperature, volumetric air flow, accelerator pedal position, fuel rail pressure, calculated engine load, engine RPM, air intake temperature, barometric pressure, evaporative system vapor pressure, exhaust gas temperature, oxygen sensor voltage, and a bunch of other calculated and directly read signals.
The simple answer is - nothing happens in a modern car without intervention from the ECU. Electrical engineers are the ones who design these electronics systems. So, that's the answer.
They were developing this engine since 1998.

Hey Scotty I really do appreciate your videos and I found much help/information just from watching them. Me and my wife had just bought a travel trailer and are wanting to buy an SUV to pull it so we’ll need more than 6000 towing capacity but we would also want an SUV with three rows of seats. We like the 2019 Infiniti QX 80, but is that a great buy? If not, what are your recommendations?

I just got to fix a qx50 and I can tell you that I do not like the way the newer generation of vehicles are going. They are getting too much electronics in them that it is getting more expensive to fix. I know electronics can be good but we can also go without them in certain areas.

I agree with you, It's amazing how many people still stand by Nissan like they still made 80's era Datsuns. I wouldn't waste money on a Renaultsan today. I've also become very wary of "new" designs. Why not just use proven Hybrid technology?
I had a chevy prizm or should i say a toyota corolla. That car was so reliable that it was in the family for 10 years. Got total due to hail, was in a car wreck and it still drove. We sold it and bought the new version corolla.
I read other comments about this video over buffering, it seems that auto manufacturers don't want this video out to the public.
Actually, Cadillac’s V8-6-4 was a very robust and reliable engine. The reason it failed is because the electronics didn’t exist at the time that were able to keep up with the rapid changes in displacement demand that were required to operate. The V8-6-4 engine, if given modern computer controls, would work fine today. It was an idea that was ahead of its time. As to GM’s modern displacement on demand engines, they are just as reliable as anything else out there. My Silverado’s 6.0 LS engine with D.O.D. is still going strong with zero problems after ten years. Most of what you say in your videos is spot on Scotty, but this one, not so much. But I’m still a big fan and I love your videos. Keep up the good work.

Weird my 2008 Silverado with a 5.3 with cylinder deactivation has 200000 miles and nothing ticks and never loses a drop of oil between changes the body isn't the greatest but the driveline is solid

Bret Sonenstein I had a 5.3 without active fuel management it was a 2001 I got around 17mpg on the highway this 2008 I get about 20-21 mpg on the highway so not a huge difference I treat it like it is turbocharged and I change the oil more frequently and I have never had engine problems
those cylinder deactivation 5300 from that era are notorious for complete failure. i mean total shutdown the engine is getting thrown in the shredder. your frequent oil changes may just have saved you an out of warranty engine replacement.
ima be be be be so moral of the story maintenance is king just like every vehicle all I'm saying is if you change the oil and don't drive like a meathead then you will be happy with that engine
I bought a pre-owned '07 Sierra with the 5.3 and at 125k miles the #4 lifter collapsed. Cost me about 2k to fix.
**It had around 120k miles on it when I bought it.
Never buy the first generation, let the bugs get worked out and buy the generation 2.

I was skeptical at first, thinking "What does this guy know about it?" Uhhhh, ..... he convinced me. That engine it overly complicated for a relatively small gain. Scotty is right.

Yea.. But that engine was designed by Mercedes so im not surprised it would break down
Edit: I did a little research and that engine was built by Nissan, its a 2.0L turbo engine that puts out 268 hp.. The one i previously mentioned is a 2.0L turbo that puts out 208 hp designed by Mercedes & used in the Q50/Q60.. Wanted to give nissan the benefit of the doubt but they've been a mindless profit machine for the past decade.. Awful😔

You're just saying what's been said for longer than I've been driving. I'm 62. Never buy a first year production car whether it be a brand new model or a significant refresh with new technology because they almost always have their teething problems. Nissan's variable compression engine is definitely something new. I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the design. I hope it does prove itself, but it'll never do that if no one buys it, and therein lies the conundrum. Like you Scotty, I'm not particularly interested in being a guinea pig either. ;-)

This is why luxury car brands tend to have longer warranties. Also, customers of new luxury cars tend to lease, partially for this reason. Many luxury cars are based on high-volume, non-luxury cars these days, which helps the engineering be more reliable. Lincoln=Ford, Cadillac=Chevy/Buick/GMC, Acura=Honda, Lexus=Toyota, Infiniti=Nissan, Audi=VW. Often, the luxury model is 80%+ the same as the regular model, with tweaks to appearance, comfort, convenience.
I cannot comment about the American market or vehicles , i live down under. New vehicles here look good, go well, plenty power, good economy, all the bells & whistles but i don't think their made to last. Engine parts made of plastic ,front timing covers, inlet manifolds, tappet covers, engine sumps, water pumps, thermostat housings, oil filter housings, I've see broken plastic suspension components, leaking plastic fuel tanks where the top half of the tank is fused to the bottom half of the fuel tank, software problems. Most new vehicles come with 5 or 7 year warranty, road side assist, nationwide towing, capped price servicing. When the warranty runs out, go buy/lease a new vehicle. Manufacturers don't release product information to independent mechanics even though they are supposed too. Independent mechanics don't know how to do repairs or understand repair protocols, they are been pushed out because of the advancement in technology. Continuous new technology upgrades in every new model the aftermarket cannot keep up. Consumers realise this now , don't really repair anymore if its a major expense. Your average person on the street is becoming less interested in 2nd hand vehicles because their scared or they knew someone with a horror story of an expensive repair bill outside of warranty. Like washing machines, fridges, etc... when they have problems, buy new. New industries created, others become extinct. The wheels of progress move forward, embrace it or long for the past, your choice. Happy motoring folks.

My Nissan ALWAYS costed me way to much in repairs over and over again. I bought a Honda Accord. Best decision I’ve made. Never buying a Nissan again!
What kind was it and year?
On my 4th accord. I run then for 100K plus and then give them to one of my kids who puts another 100-200K on them. Don't know if the newest ones are as good. The 2018 looks like a spaceship. The best one was the 99.

The problem is say they find a problem that's going to cost X amount to fix and X is a lot because it requires a redesign but only happens in Y area climate. Then some bean counter determines the amount of vehicles sold in Y areas repairs from the defect will be way cheaper than X's value in the long run. Guess what than... Off to production it goes as is.
That's the problem, at the end of the day it's all about the profit. Nobody cares about the customer or what inconvenience it may cause them to get their vehicle repaired from the defect. It's all about the numbers on the graphs and how to maximize them....

Those were some serious motors in them there cars.
Nissan engineering is still world class and many of their power plants are still based on the 90s and 2000s designs like the VQ SR and QR all bulletproof motors. Same with the GTR obviously. Renault do not own Nissan, they are an alliance. The engine's in Nissans are not Renault either. People need to check facts before keyboard bashing

Yes. This video keeps buffering, then plays, then buffering again. But I watched it any way with pauses in it. Then paused it and waited for it to download. Not sure what's up with that. Sense others are having that problem the problem must be with the source feeding the download. Either youtube or the server where the video originates. (Low bandwidth, server resources are being over taxed, or a massive number of users downloading at the same time. ) Maybe it was uploaded in a different format than usual? Or maybe it is still uploading. Sorry, computer technical analyst here. The analysts part is in my nature.

I love the 318 in my truck. Technically it's a 5.2 LA but dodge stuck with a reliable classic and made small changes to it. MFI, they changed the metallurgy to lighten the engine and components. She's got about 250k and all I've done were oil changes and tune ups. And the occasional sensor. She does burn a little oil but an old foreman of mine who is experienced with classic mopar told me the 318 always burned a little. That's why you do a walk around and check the fluids. I drove commercial so a pre trip is second nature to me but am a big believer in it. When I worked for a shop a few years ago I got a lot of return business from teaching some basic auto care to the customers.

I'm a mechanic at Infitniti. I agree with Scotty. Hadn't seen any big issues yet, but it is a lot of wear parts. They've been out for a while, but still too soon to tell.

Check out Engineering Explained's video on this. Nissian is actually doing a lot more to test this engine for long term reliability than is usually seen in the automotive industry. They spread 600 vechicles across the world to test the engine in varying climates and driving conditions.
Their claims are just as bogus as their warranties. They’ll say anything to get u to ignore their horrible reputation so they can take your money.
Exactly, I got the feeling that Scotty is against all new technology because it's either harder to work on or more complicated. Well that's how technology works, it always gets more complex over time and if Nissan has their engines tested over a massive distance, I don't think they will be more unreliable than some of the shitty engines that are out there right now

Say what you want about Scotty, but over 93% of all Corollas are still on the road. My 96 has 339,000 miles all the while changing out minor things for wear and tear. Brakes ,timing belt,battery,etc. Problem with high end cars is that the average Joe thinks they can afford them and as soon as any little thing goes wrong they are hit with sticker shock. Personally, I cannot afford these cars and that's fine by me. People need to check themselves before they get into the expensive vehicles.
Still not worth the risk when you can buy a well known reliable car with better gas mileage... and engineering explained is highly biased. There’s literally no reason why you should be a guinea pig for new technologies unless you’ve got plenty o money to throw away. There’s no advantage, you can buy cheaper, more efficient, well known reliable cars instead of trusting the words of infinity’s marketing department and engineering explained who probably got sponsored to make that infinity video to begin with.

It's the auto industry messing up the video. They don't want the truth of variable compression engines being garbage. Pay more money for a crappier engine. Then you'll just want to buy a new car after the warranty is over. Lol

26 mpg is great, unless you spend what you save on gas at the garage.
This is only for the rating on the poster. If you drive aggressively you will never get this mpg. Power comes from fuel - driving harder => more fuel consumed. It is just this engine has the ability to use less fuel if driven slow and suck fuel/power when driven fast. IMHO
@Aidan Bhuiyan what’s your speed? I have a totally different vehicle. A 2016 Subaru crosstrek limited. It’s rated for 34highway and I get 40mpg going 65with cruise control, ethanol free gas, and Michelin tires.
