We have a 2013 C300 4 matic we bought in 2014 w/9000miles. Wife's daily driver. 11 years later, still looks new, never had one break down or mechanical issue....NEVER. Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. 6+ years and no car payments. Cannot tell you how much money that car has saved us. It owes us nothing. (140000+ M currently) .
I had a 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor sport sedan with a rare 6-speed manual transmission. I bought it used in 2007 with 24k miles on it. I sold with 205k miles on it. It never left me stranded, never broke down & a really fun car to drive. I will say that when it approached 175k miles, it started to get heavy with the maintenance. I always kept the car well maintained & always used OEM parts. I currently have a 2013 E350 4matic sport sedan I bought in 2015 with 30k miles. It currently has 104k miles on it & has served me well.
only 140k? That car's still a baby compared to your average honda/toyota. Not really enough to say anything about the reliability at that mileage, most cars will go that distance without major repairs
@@iank6897 Yeah, my wife's work is close. But not too close that it doesn't get a warm up. We have taken it on some longer trips to see family(6 hrs drive). It hasn't needed any repairs at all. Just oil, brakes, tires, battery(which lasted an astonishing 9 1/2 years) fluid changes...and of course I do that stuff myself(Thanks Scotty). I always tell my kids, treat your belongings well, because you never know when you will need to sell them in order to eat.
Scotty is a multi millionaire i bet he cna buy not only old mercedes but half of Mercedes factory in Germany )) give him few more years here on youtube with 3 videos per days and he will by BMW factory in Bavaria as well ))
My 1983 W123 200 Auto also going strong. Cheapest car to run that I've ever owned. My wife drives it every day and says she will be buried in it - cheaper than a coffin! 😂
My wife had a 1999 CLK 450 v8 Incredible car. It did need a new transmission at 198,000 miles and I didn’t take it to Mercedes for that. I took it to a specialist for transmissions saved $3000. It’s still running after we gave it to a friend of ours for $1000, it’s got over 300,000 miles on it and he’s just had to do regular maintenance. He’s had to do break jobs things like that but it’s a high-performance car never had to touch any exhaust system. Only thing I did on the engine was replace valve cover gasket . I agree Mercedes made in Germany are much better. I have an E350 Formatic It’s a 2012 and we have 200,000 miles on it and we’ve only had to do regular maintenance except for gasket. I think that was on the timing chain cover. If you care for a good holder, Mercedes, you can get half 1,000,000 miles at least our E350 looks brand new inside and out my experience has been that people buy Mercedes and abuse them don’t take care of them and when something breaks, they blame it on Mercedes even though they haven’t done proper maintenance
The earlier model had the m112 which was better . This one also has the 722.9 which sucks if you conductor plate goes bad. Because you can't buy it over the counter at dealer. They will sell it with the labor service
Bought a 2001 clk 55 amg with 85k miles for $4000. Powertrain is super reliable (even more reliable than the newer gen Scotty was reviewing) and a joy to drive. Scotty wasn’t kidding about that A/C system though, recently had to shell out $2000 to revamp the A/C system as it was leaking from multiple parts and hoses under the hood. Still worth it imo.
I bought an 04 clk500 with 50k miles for $10k. Meticulously maintained, beautiful car. Only inherent issues with the engines are the crankshaft position sensor can get hot and fail, let it cool off and it fires back up. Problem is when people replace them, they use cheap Chinese sensors instead of Bosch. Other inherent issue is the valve cover gaskets. Same thing tho where people cheap out and the problem comes back. It also uses a complex can-bus network, it requires perfect voltage from the battery or else everything gets mad, it also gets mad when you don’t use oem quality parts. These cars were outfitted with Bosch electronic systems from factory, including Bosch abs which actually works really well. Last cool fact is the drag coefficient is almost as good as a Prius, I drive mostly on the highway and average 20.4 mpg with the 5.0L v8
They were best in the 70’s/80’s/90’s. The last analogue Mercedes diesels were the W124/W126. They stopped making the W124 in ‘94/‘95, that was the last Mercedes that was a true “Forever Car” (infinitely maintainable/serviceable).
Most of the codes are caused by the bad battery ..no point in looking at them , just clear them all , drive the car and then look at the new ones. C209's are very good cars. Sunroof can be normalised in 20 seconds by pressing the control buttons.
I wish Scotty would review some used Mercedes and BMW diesel models. At least the ones they sold in the USA, such as the 2015 Mercedes GLK250 BlueTEC and the 2015 E250 BlueTEC. Americans have never as lucky as people in Europe when it comes to diesel car selection, unfortunately. I'm also curious about the 2014 to 2018 BMW 328d, the wagon and/or the sedan.
I got a 2003 CLK 55 AMG for $4,000, with 132, XXX miles. Was in great shape and honestly is a BLAST to drive. I love it. The key is that it IS NOT my daily, I have a Toyota Camry for that. It is a Toy/Project car. You need to go into buying one of these with that mindset. Also, I did a lot of the preventative maintenance myself, spark plugs, valve covers, brakes, etc. But it has been very reliable and parts, even the AMG version, are simply based off the C class of that year; not that pricey.
The M113 motor is so bulletproof that you could easily daily that badboy and have no issues at all other than spending more on gas. The M113 was easily the best motor Mercedes has built in the modern era.
I bought an ‘06 SL500 with just 48,000 miles on it. Drove it 3 years with zero issues. Then I took it to a side shop after the local Mercedes dealership bilked me for $659 for a Schedule B servicing. They had good reviews and a Mercedes specialist. I was there for an oil change, that was it. Well, long story short…a year and a half later I’m into them for $17,000 in repairs sinse the first visit. It was literally one thing after another. One time after picking it up, just three days passed when something else went out. I’ve presently been driving a loaner for six weeks straight because they can’t find a mersedes original part. They’ve replace the after market part twice now as they both failed around the 20 day mark after they were installed. It’s warranty work but still. I paid $17,000 for the car. It books for around $24,000. I’ve put $17,000 in repairs in it in a 16 month period. $34,000 in a car worth $24,000 book and I’d be lucky to get $14,000 out of it right now…though it’s basically a new car with just 70,300 miles on it currently. Love driving it! But it’s drained my savings. Wouldn’t recommend purchasing one, especially after watching this…it seems to be typical of the make.
@@dondgc2298Hardtop is fine, no issues. The shocks is why it’s in the shop right now. Struts I should say. Hydraulic. The original pump failed months ago and the first and second after market pumps have both failed around the 20 day mark on each. That work is under warranty, but they’ve had the car for over a month now trying to find an original Mercedes pump. They won’t put another after market in it. Just won’t hold up. The car only has 70,230 miles on it. You name it, it’s been replaced less the top. Knock on wood! Fun to drive, but a nightmare in repairs. German engineering is grossly over rated. The motor and transmission might be strong but the rest of the car is literally junk. If I have to take a trip over 400 miles I rent a car. Can’t trust I’ll get there and back in the SL.
I have 2 E430's..1999 sport and a 2002. They are beasts. Both have over 280k miles. Very easy to fix and the drive train is bullet proof. Worse I had to do was replace the ignition interface. Otherwise normal upkeep.
Owner of a convertible CLK 350 07 with 153k miles. The car really holds up very well for it's age everything works never had a problem with that with only basic maintenance done by myself. Really recommend if you want a cheap comfortable and durable car to get around.
My old 328i 2008 had it first battery replaced after 12 years of service. It was fairly reliable. I replaced the valve cover twice, put in a new starter, electric water pump and faithfully serviced the transmission every 50,000 miles. At 325,000 miles, we traded it in for a 2023 RAV4. By then, it had a bad cat. Not too bad for a German car. I have done all the repairs and maintenance.
@@lincolnmarkltMan I swear when you give opinion make some research at least.. First one said SL and then second one corrected it even more wrong xd I can’t honestly.. It’s SLC which is sth like SLK but after renaming.. You should stop being so ignorant about European cars
Hello Scotty. We cant allow you to have the Mercedes. We have chosen and decided to issue a 1972 Ford pinto to be your car for life. I chose this for you because we love you
I got a 2002 clk55 amg 130k lucky my brother had the fancy tester air bag light on. Passengers seat weight sensor shorted out on the seat rail. Also lost vacuum on the gas tank smoker found the small cracked hose. 83k new paid 6k nice car but u need the expensive tester.
I bought a 2000 CLK430 years ago with 30k miles and drove it to 110k before it was stolen n totaled. That car was excellent, I didnt even maintain it very well. Super reliable, only had to fix one thing, the camshaft sensor, cost me like 150 bucks plus the tow. Awesome vehicle very well built.
I have a 2005 CLK350 Sport Cabriolet, and on long journeys I can get 40mpg! I love it. I just change the oil every 5k miles. Even with a new aircon condensor the aircon sucks tho!
His pronunciations of "Deutschland" and "Stuttgart" were decent, but not great. Rather strong accent. I'm not complaining, just opposing to the view that he did "very well".
I have a 2005 SLK 350 with 42,000 miles on it. It's garage kept and it"s like brand new. It's a hard top convertible, 2 seater roadster. It's easy to work on. I love the car.
Scotty, You might be interested in this. I just bought a used Toyota Rav EV it has a Toyota body (which is so well built from the paint job to the interior) it is really good for what we need. I paid $11,000 for it. It is fast when you want it to be and my wife and I are totally happy with it. We don't do long trips and we charge it on 120v every night the range is about 82 miles on a charge, now, which is fine. The battery is about 80% but the build quality of everything is so so good. They only made about 2600 of these. And Toyota was involved with Tesla in the early stage. It has 52,000 miles on it now. Maybe if you get time you can tell me how this came to be. It is a very cool car. Thanks for all your information that keeps all of us educated to cars and trucks. Kem
I've had several Mercedes. They aren't really as bad to repair as you think. 1) Don't be afraid to look into repairing things yourself. For instance, those hood struts are a 2 minute fix. 2) FCP Euro is your best friend when you have to order anything Mercedes Benz or any other European car. 3) Super low-mileage Mercedes are easy to find and inexpensive. Don't let the old stories scare you away. Go drive one for yourself. They are like a cloud on wheels.
Get the clk prior to 2006..alot better car..v6 and v8 are simple and great motor's..The 2006 3.5 has issues with counter balance shaft..they made it of soft metal..motor has to come out to replace..variable timing on the 2006 onwards..
I owned a used 1999 CLK320 convertible for 15 years. Drove fantastic. Spent about $5k over the lifetime for both maintenance and repair. I sold it and bought a used 2016 MB350 sedan. Outstanding car. Easy to maintain. I compare it to my Toyotas and MB are just a little more expensive for maintenance and repair, but not much. My Honda Pilot and Acura, however can break the bank. Sold the Acura and kept the Honda. I’m doing all maintenance on the Honda myself. Runs about $700 to $800 every 30k miles, or twice the MB cost. Luckily I’ve managed to not have the Honda blown engine problem due to frequent oil changes with synthetic oil, I guess. Oil changes for the Toyotas and MB can go over 10k miles with no problem. The Honda oil is done at 7.5K miles and transmission fluid and differential at 30k miles, otherwise they break. The transmission fluids and parts must be OEM only and the dealer would charge about $1k for their service.
One of my closest friends that I've known now for close to 50 years is a mechanic and he owns a 1999 Mercedes E 430. He and I were talking about it one day and he said that even though the parts are expensive like they are for any Mercedes regardless of year that ones built before or around 2005 are easier to work on and live with than one built after that. I wouldn't mind having an early 90s W140. I just wish Mercedes had offered a manual transmission with the 500 and 600 S Class.
1st gen SLK 55 AMG was a blast to drive. Little car, BIG engine. Who wouldn't enjoy that?? The 5.4L AMG motors were built for boost, so the N/A version was super reliable
Blowing thru all those residential neighborhoods....praying to God no little child chases after a bouncy ball out to the street from behind a parked car or whatever.....
We own an E 320 Wagon. 1995. .. it with my mechanic Ryan S. I must say, he has the most “ Gifted Hands”; as he’s putting my car back together.. because of a horrible mechanic who ruined my car. That horrible Mechanic was going to Change Me, $ 1500 for repairs Ryan took care of absolutely Beautifully.. for $ 400. That was quite a few years ago. Nevertheless, Ryan is my Trusted , well versed and knowledgeable, of German Cars. Thank goodness I was referred to Ryan S !! 🌟🧡🌟 He is the Best in Florida !! Thank you, for your service, and your support, in our Mercedes Benz! Mercedes🧡
Problem with the German cars is the electrical. They all use Bosch harnesses, which tend to break down after about 5 years. All Herman cars run very hot, typically ruin the electrical system after several years. Happened on the VW’s and the Mercedes we’ve owned.
I owned two E class sedans over the period of 1993- 2020. So long term. Never had a hint of an electrical problem. Driving a GLE now. Zero electrical issues.
I have a lexus of the same year with more than double the mileage and have 0 codes. Never even had a check engine light come on. Seriously, if that Mercedes has all those glitches with 70k on it then the future looks bleak. 😅
This doesn't look like a well-maintained exemplar. However, the future's still not bright because Mercedes has stopped being great at providing spare parts. Have one of the ECUs die on this car and you'll be hunting for a used one, as they are no longer available as new parts. Same for many other parts.
Hey Scotty want to review my 65 Dart GT with a 273 V8 4bbl that gets over 20 mpg?Classic styling with modern economy, all you have to do is be able to tune a Thermqaud lol.
My E300 was a 94 and in 2014 when I owned it had 0 codes for 3 years! It ran perfect until the radiator went out and at the time I didn’t know how to do that myself! And I couldn’t find a reg garage to do the job either! And dealer wanted $1,700-$2,200 Finally was able to convince a garage to do it $400 but had to sign a non liability for them! So they weren’t responsible if it blew up afterwards 😂 but after the job was done he said!! It was no different then doing a ford or Hyundai 😂😂😂
I have several friends with this car. One had to have the top opening mechanism replaced and it just started from there! Never would I own this car! I enjoyed riding in it but! I didn't have to pay the repair bills on it!
I got rid of my '09 AWD C300. I sleep so well now, since I got rid of it. I was willing to give it away, but someone bought it. I bought a Lexus, NOTHING goes wrong with these reliable vehicles.
it depends on what lexus )) heard about rusty/rotten frames on Tacoma ? guess what same frames were used on Lexus GX and Toyota 4Runenr. Land Cruiser. So there you go. now you have 10 years old suv that used to cost $80K which has good body good motor, good electronics but rotten frame. What would you do?
Take it or Leave it, Mercedes Benz is still recognized the world over. Lexus and Acura and Infiniti may be more durable than Mercedes but you can not take away the power of the name behind it. Rolls Royce is now BMW and Bentley is a VW but power of their names vibrate. Get elevated into the ultra rich and you will be enquiring about them. Mercedes emblem is the most popular after the Christian CROSS the world over 🚓🚕🚗🚙. 🤔😎
What a nightmare! In Massachusetts-any check engine light on means you cannot get an inspection sticker (you cannot legally drive the car);imagine taking a complex car like this to a local mechanic? Kiss $20,000 goodbye.
Thats what I hate about Mass. All of my cars are registered down in Florida for that reason. Don't forget the shop forcing you to purchase new tires from them just to pass.
I worked at a used car dealership some time ago. There were quite a few MB that came and went and came back. I don’t understand why they’re still a status symbol. For the most part they’re not mechanically sound. I guess people that have money have different priorities…
You're Only see the Mercedes that had problems, Not the thousands that are driving fine! I worked at a service shop and saw TONS of Mercedes come in for oil changes that had High mileage, and were totally fine.
Depends on what era mercedes. Brand new ones are horrible, these older ones in this video arent bad at all mechanically, as long as you stay away from the air suspension.
Awhile back, rented a 2024 Toyota Highlander, not familiar with. Owners manual short version, 437 pages long and complex! Took me a day to understand and set up electronic stuff!

@@Monaco377 Facts, I don't daily it just due to gas right now, not for fear of the M113, as long as you maintain it, that thing will last forever
Can confirm. Got a 2011 SL550 at 60,000 miles. Drove it til 80,000 and spent probably $15k on all sorts if crap. So stupid
I’m curious, as my Mercedes service tech keeps trying to talk me out of buying a used SL - were the issues with the folding hardtop and the shocks?
They are expensive poorly made cars just like most Audi and BMWs. It's a brand buy these days nothing else.
@@mrmyth5846 yes struts is what I meant. Wow. Sounds like a nightmare. Thanks for the response.

I have 2 E430's..1999 sport and a 2002. They are beasts. Both have over 280k miles. Very easy to fix and the drive train is bullet proof. Worse I had to do was replace the ignition interface. Otherwise normal upkeep.

oops
I know where’s the crazy one in the thumbnail? The video has a POS CLK250 or whatever. I wanted to see Scotty talk about the super car lol

The picture in the thumbnail is a different model Benz, looks like a SL class.
Cls
My Camry had 3 trouble codes, none came back.
Hey scotty , I bought a Toyota Camry hybrid due to watching your videos, best decision ever, thanks a mill
I recently bought an A180. It has just over 50,000 miles on it. Goes great.
One trip to the dealership for repairs and suddenly this isn't such a good deal. There is a reason you can pick up these used Mercedes so cheap.
Tire Pressure Gauge, only $4.48 at Home Depot, not $10
These actually get great gas mileage, rn I average about 24 mpg between city/highway and I've gotten 30 before on highway. Mine is an 08
Small vice grip. Great idea. Have a piece of wood. Thanks. Harbor Freight here I come
great news: plenty repair videos for this engine, brakes, etc., etc.
I got a 2014 Benz e350 best car I ever had.. runs amazing super reliable

His pronunciations of "Deutschland" and "Stuttgart" were decent, but not great. Rather strong accent. I'm not complaining, just opposing to the view that he did "very well".
Youve talked me into getting a classic bro
The clk were actually reliable! Except the tops that weren’t and sting leaks if it’s not manual top! Easy clip and unclip and fold back
😂
Greetings from Greece! Great job as always! However, the starting picture has nothing to do with the specific model presented.
Older Mercedes is extremely good like c300
Hood struts are $15 each most definitely worth it, then you can put it in the 90 degree service position
I have a 2005 SLK 350 with 42,000 miles on it. It's garage kept and it"s like brand new. It's a hard top convertible, 2 seater roadster. It's easy to work on. I love the car.
I have a 98 c230 its slow but god is it a beauty especially for its age
Low battery voltage generates most of those codes
Kem
in what country? here in US ? Bring it to Scotty if you near TN or RI.
Scotty's thumbnails are hilarious😂
Toyota and Honda electronic wiring is straightforward. A to B. German engineering: A to Z to C?
My older E350 was made in Germany, most dependable car I've ever owned. Blasphemy for this channel - I traded in an Accord for it. Never a regret.
I had one of those about 10 years ago and I still miss it. Smooth, classy, refined
I dunno about everyone - but one primary reason that I’m a fan of Scotty is his laughing horse. 😂😂😂
I love this Mercedes! It's beautiful and drives well! I also really like the R129! :D
My 2011 E350 has had nothing but regular maintenance and is a great driving car. My wifes Lexus LS430 at the same age was not as reliable.
My 2013 GLK350 4MATIC is good, only 57,200 miles though.
I just got my 2011 e350 and I love it! Only has 76k miles and I am planning to keep it forever.
If someone took out the thermostats and that is why isn’t not warming up it can be the signs of head gasket issue!
W202 1993-2000 seems the most affordable MB model. Those engines do not die. There is the fuel efficiency too.
Sadly Mercedes spare parts supply has gone down the drain. You cannot buy many parts for these (including the C209 in the video) as new anymore.
The struts are only about $10 each, I got OEM quality ones (hood and trunk) from AutoDoc. Merc parts are not as expensive as we fear.
190e was a lovely little motor .
1st gen SLK 55 AMG was a blast to drive. Little car, BIG engine. Who wouldn't enjoy that?? The 5.4L AMG motors were built for boost, so the N/A version was super reliable
Those were the best gen SLK. Love em. Mini SLR.

He is the Best in Florida !!
I currenly have a 83 mercedes 240d with the 124k but the odometer does not work. Its in the shop hopfully i will get it back soon

The CLK hood struts are like $10. Scotty "spends hundreds of dollars or buy a vise grip" 😂
My E300 was a 94 and in 2014 when I owned it had 0 codes for 3 years!
It ran perfect until the radiator went out and at the time I didn’t know how to do that myself! And I couldn’t find a reg garage to do the job either! And dealer wanted $1,700-$2,200
Finally was able to convince a garage to do it $400 but had to sign a non liability for them!
That’s the number one issue as I understand it…
I didn't know a weak battery could cause so many trouble codes. Thx for the video Scotty!
You’d think with thermostat sticking it would overheat! Unless they took it out completely! But then it won’t have heat if it was out.
All Mercedes require premium gas; it’s a hell of a premium to pay when there are other good cars out there; particularly in Canada
The vice grips lol

Scotty indicated older cars are better specially with manual transmission.
I was expecting the "side-eye" guy at the number of codes...
I worked at a used car dealership some time ago. There were quite a few MB that came and went and came back. I don’t understand why they’re still a status symbol. For the most part they’re not mechanically sound. I guess people that have money have different priorities…
Reputation, my friend, reputation. When people hear "Mercedes" they still think of the ones built in the 90's and earlier.
They are usually very good mechanically. No other brand has had so many miles on their cars on avarage as MB before junked.
You're Only see the Mercedes that had problems, Not the thousands that are driving fine! I worked at a service shop and saw TONS of Mercedes come in for oil changes that had High mileage, and were totally fine.
Still not as bad as a BMTroubleYou.
