I went iPad only about 4 years ago and have had to this year add a MacBook back in the equation. My problem hasn’t been iPad performance but rather the lack of a desktop class browser.
When I see these videos of iPad performance it often companies video editing and other performance specs. I’ve found those to be great (and my iPad was out performing my MacBook at the time which is what caused my original transition to the iPad.
But try using chrome or safari on OS for basic tasks like, Logging into most banks and performing an advanced function, or…. Google sheets. I know many of these have native iOS apps but they also tend to limit their apps to mobile functions. IMO with the number of applications that are web based the number one thing apple could do for iPad os is sign it as the same browser as desktop safari (and before anyone comments back that you can say request desktop site…. Trying that either many websites like Quickbooks or google wont get you a difference experience.

I rarely find a site that does not work on iPadOS as as it does MacOS with Safari.

I only want chromium support for desktop class browser support on my ipad so that i can use indian govt websites on my ipad as the most third world countries also optimise their websites for chromium browsers. Only desktop level can make ipad useful to me so that i can also use web apps to the fullest, also we can add any extension that are available on other platforms.

Not a compromise. If I’m going to be working on coding or some larger project, I’m not doing on a laptop, I’m doing in my dedicated work environment with multiple monitors and multiple desktop machines. And if for some reason I absolutely need to gain access to a desktop OS, that’s what my VPN and remote desktop are for. Doing some basic fun video work, practicing my digital stick-figure drawing, internet browsing, shopping, media consumption (including reading), typing up notes, working with electronic documents, basic photo editing, making memes, all work fantastically well on the iPad pro with the option of hand-held, with or without the pencil, or with a keyboard.
    Would I take a touch-enabled MacOS over iPad OS? Absolutely. But I don’t * need * it.

I love my iPadPro 13 with 1TB. The upgrade from the M1 was big for lighter weight, the Pencil Pro which is the Pencil experience I wanted from the first Pencil. It is now my ebook reading device (I put it in airplane mode when reading). I have it next to my MBP for quick research or lookup or sketching notes or diagram ideas. It is a killer device for me. 🐬

The only reason I can’t use iPad as a replacement is google sheets and excel. Google sheets doesn’t allow you to have multiple sheets up. Excel allows it but it’s just not as robust on browser or software. Wish they would change that.

Having been an iPad power user since the first model came out, I can safety say that for the vast majority of people almost any iPad model can replace the computer. If you start with asking what type of tasks do you want to use the device for, you will find most are basic tasks. And if they just practice enough on using the iPad they will find out how easy it is for most tasks. And given that so many of us have a computer at work, we can always use that device when the functionality of the work on the iPad is a bit to complex (or limited even with a mouse or trackpad).

I agree that it makes more sense to compare and contrast the iPad Pros as an alternative to the MacBook Pros rather than the Air. This is not only because of the comparable pricing range, but also because of the specs, pro-motion display, superior screen quality, and better speaker quality that those devices have over their Air counterparts.

I have been using the M1 iPad Pro as my only personal computer for the past 3 years now and I thoroughly enjoy the experience. However, I am awaiting the launch of the M4 MacBook Air, as the operating system limitation that I occasionally run into is quite major. The most recent limitation that I have run into was when I needed to take a proctor exam and the software could only run on Windows or Mac OS. Now, luckily I had my wife’s MacBook Air that I could utilise. I’ll need to do a lot more proctor exams in the future and I will need to get a replacement for my personal computer soon, so for my application, having a device that runs Mac OS is going to work better for me.

The way I see it, the iPad Pro I use is more of an alternative instead of a replacement for a MacBook. It definitely can replace the MacBook for certain things, but definitely not everything. Like for me I can take my iPad Pro with magic keyboard in lieu of a MacBook for most things on the go like taking notes, word processing, etc. But in terms of true multitasking with a lot of things and more intensive apps that don't run on the iPad, then I'll use the Macbook.

I’m doing more and more with my iPad and less and less with my Mac. It’s been a gradual progression. I do think for many Mac users that ultimately the iPad will be the way to go as a primary or possibly only device in 3-5 years. It’s light years beyond where the first iPad was.
Have you thought of a parallel channel called 9 to 5 iPad?

I heard you in the pod the other day mention how you went for the 1tb for the first time ever, simply due to the RAM (and P core).
I tried, have the studio display/cal digit etc. the OS is just such a pronounced limiting factor that I had to get a mac mini.

I have a M4 iPad Pro and I like it for what it can do - it's a real speed demon but there is one area where I still can't use any iPad and that is with my 3D printer and prusaslicer. That software hasn't been released for the iPad and it's a shame with all that power. (Not blaming Apple for that - just noting that it's the one BIG thing I have to defer to my MacBook Pro (Also now an M4). Along that line - software installs are limited to what Apple will allow - unless you get a developer's license - and still it's not as easy as downloading a DMG installer. Interestingly I have cell service on my iPad and do use it on the go and that's a big plus when I want a big screen and am not near any wifi hotspots. (Yeah- could use my iPhone as that hotspot, but....)

I wonder Fernando… with Apple’s push to Apple Intelligence, along with Mark Gurman’s rumors of an LLM Siri in iOS 19.4-ish if they will bring the iPad Pro up to a standard 16 gig RAM at base prices, instead of being able to get that only if you upgrade to the 1 tb configuration? I guess this would mean that my idea would not happen until M5 comes out for it then?

anyone else find that the iPadPro struggles with multiple google doc/sheets/slides tabs in its browser? the app alternatives are complete garbage. I know that youtubers use these for content creation but many use it for more traditional jobs and its frustrating to know that it can process multimedia with no problem but slows down to a crawl when too many google suite windows are open.

It simply doesn’t have the software. You don’t even need to be some sort of business professional. Want to use RUclips with Adblock and sponsorblock? SOL. Want to torrent? SOL. Chromium extensions? SOL. Tons of apps are also way worse than than their desktop versions. VLC, discord, Amazon, RUclips, Excel, Outlook, there’s no end. Plus iPad doesn’t really have a desktop, no true directory access (music you own has to be loaded into Music by plugging iPad into a real computer, for example), window management is terrible regardless of stage manager.

Nice video! thanks for sharing!. In my case, I try to use my iPad as my main device for 5-6 years already. This year I got a MacBook Air.
One of my main reasons is Safari still a mobile Safari, you can even see that on this video 5:38, google sheets is a mobile version on chrome browser, if you use google docs, iPad native apps are really bad and web apps are just Ok. Don’t know why nobady talks about this on RUclips. Webapps on iPad are just ok in general, great on MacOS Safari, just Ok on iPad Safari.
Other reason was, 13” iPad + Magic Keyboard is heavier than a MacBook Air.
It is more fun to use iPad, it is more efficient to use MacOS.
Even Fernando always has a MacBook Air connected to the monitor on his videos.

Very true, browser is a big drawback can’t even inspect elements for scraping without using a plugin which isn’t very optimal either and as for excel it’s massively short of the desktop version. Coding options very limited too I’ve resigned from even thinking of it as laptop sold the pro 2020 got m1 air iPad and use a Mac mini for real work. Will not get a keyboard for iPad again nor a pro until the software is up to par and to be fair it’s not entirely apples fault in the case of excel but the browser would be a good start. iPad for iPad things
