    I went iPad only about 4 years ago and have had to this year add a MacBook back in the equation. My problem hasn’t been iPad performance but rather the lack of a desktop class browser.
    When I see these videos of iPad performance it often companies video editing and other performance specs. I’ve found those to be great (and my iPad was out performing my MacBook at the time which is what caused my original transition to the iPad.
    But try using chrome or safari on OS for basic tasks like, Logging into most banks and performing an advanced function, or…. Google sheets. I know many of these have native iOS apps but they also tend to limit their apps to mobile functions. IMO with the number of applications that are web based the number one thing apple could do for iPad os is sign it as the same browser as desktop safari (and before anyone comments back that you can say request desktop site…. Trying that either many websites like Quickbooks or google wont get you a difference experience.

      I only want chromium support for desktop class browser support on my ipad so that i can use indian govt websites on my ipad as the most third world countries also optimise their websites for chromium browsers. Only desktop level can make ipad useful to me so that i can also use web apps to the fullest, also we can add any extension that are available on other platforms.

      💯, the lack of a proper desktop browser experience is my number one pain point. Open Google Drive. It opens a low resolution, not optimized screen, with a « d1ckbar » at the top saying to open Google Drive app. The Google Drive app itself is limited, slow, does not respect the usability conventions of iOS, etc.
      Try using Google Docs in the browser. Every time I add accents for French or Spanish using the English International keyboard, the website freezes. This forces me to move to the app, which is terrible. The d1ckbar takes screen space, etc.
      Open Notion. It will force it to open on a tablet mode that doesn’t give the same flexibility of the real desktop version.
      Consider Miro, who does not open in the Browser but has a nice app, which itself is a webview. Then open a Miro board at the same time that Notion or Google Docs (those three are real examples of work/pro apps, with desktop and native sites/apps). Apple will limit web views that take more than 15% of memory (something like this), so if I copy a paragraph of text from Docs in the clipboard, and try to paste in Miro, either the Miro board won’t open or it will reload.

      Well said, I have a Surface Pro 9 with 512GB with 16GB and am LOVING the laptop/tablet hybrid and functionality of it. I also LOVE how it is a touch screen, which I believe adds to the ease of use. That's why when I was looking for an iPad to purchase(haven't had one in years), I decided to get the 11 inch iPad Pro M4 1TB as I would be using it when I'm in bed & prefer something lighter for extended use. I did purchase a Magic Keyboard for it and it's great to type out messages on messaging apps, etc but after using it I just prefer to use the Surface Pro when using Word, Excel etc and getting another 13 inch device would seem redundant to. At the end of the day whatever your personal use case is and what you want out of the device etc❤

    I have been using the M1 iPad Pro as my only personal computer for the past 3 years now and I thoroughly enjoy the experience. However, I am awaiting the launch of the M4 MacBook Air, as the operating system limitation that I occasionally run into is quite major. The most recent limitation that I have run into was when I needed to take a proctor exam and the software could only run on Windows or Mac OS. Now, luckily I had my wife’s MacBook Air that I could utilise. I’ll need to do a lot more proctor exams in the future and I will need to get a replacement for my personal computer soon, so for my application, having a device that runs Mac OS is going to work better for me.

    I have used an iPad Pro in the past as my only computer. I have had one complaint since I tried this back in 2019 and it's the inability to have 2 audio sources playing at once.
    I know this is a niche thing, but I often play podcasts in the background while I am either editing or making music, and in the past I would watch school videos while I listen to music.
    Overall, it's definitely doable to use it as a computer. Most people don't update hardware devices like a Line 6 Helix from their computer. For everyday computing tasks, the iPad is great. I also love the fact that you can pull the iPad off of the Magic Keyboard and take that beautiful screen around with you.

  • @MattSwain1
    @MattSwain1 2 дня назад

    I’ve gone all in with a iPad Pro M4 and for my particular use case it does almost everything. It’s definitely more than a consumption device as I’ve got my guitar connected via an audio interface, I’m learning to draw and do some photography as well. Mine is connected to a second screen with mouse and keyboard when I’m using it as a computer and if I unplug my usb hub then it’s back to being a great tablet.
    It’s probably wise to keep an old laptop around but in the past year I’ve only used mine for a firmware update for the audio interface. The thing is this can be a really old/low spec device that costs very little.
    Sure if you want to do coding or AAA gaming then the iPad isn’t a good choice but that doesn’t mean it’s no good for anyone. A sports car is terrible off road but if you never go off road then it doesn’t matter! The iPad is a great fit for some people and I happen to be one of them.

  • @SoyElDiabloRojo

    Not a compromise. If I’m going to be working on coding or some larger project, I’m not doing on a laptop, I’m doing in my dedicated work environment with multiple monitors and multiple desktop machines. And if for some reason I absolutely need to gain access to a desktop OS, that’s what my VPN and remote desktop are for. Doing some basic fun video work, practicing my digital stick-figure drawing, internet browsing, shopping, media consumption (including reading), typing up notes, working with electronic documents, basic photo editing, making memes, all work fantastically well on the iPad pro with the option of hand-held, with or without the pencil, or with a keyboard.
    Would I take a touch-enabled MacOS over iPad OS? Absolutely. But I don’t * need * it.

    • @mopnem
      @mopnem Месяц назад +1

      Yeah, I agree accept kindles are far better for reading so there isn't even that.. if one can get most of their work done on an ipad then while that's great they probably don't have that "heavy" of a workload or lower expections/experience with productivity tools. Productivity wise, I consider the iPad horrible - the reviewer even said it's "great" cause it's so limited that it keeps you on task LOL. I always come to these types of vids cause the iPad annoys me lol - it clearly has the capabilities but is the only product I can really think of that is purposefully hamstrung so aggressively.

    • @SoyElDiabloRojo
      @SoyElDiabloRojo Месяц назад

      @@mopnem I get ebooks in epub intentionally from anywhere other than Amazon and only read in dark mode. The iPad Pro's screen is far easier to read than a kindle. On top of that, I also use Panels for comics/graphic novels and Kindle can't get even laughably close to the iPad for that.
      The iPad is perfectly fine for productivity until you need two full-screen apps up at once, then you're going to have to have a second monitor regardless. If you need a program that doesn't run on iPadOS then guess what? You aren't using an iPad anyway.
      But you're here with a selection bias to troll so not sure why I'm bothering.

    Having been an iPad power user since the first model came out, I can safety say that for the vast majority of people almost any iPad model can replace the computer. If you start with asking what type of tasks do you want to use the device for, you will find most are basic tasks. And if they just practice enough on using the iPad they will find out how easy it is for most tasks. And given that so many of us have a computer at work, we can always use that device when the functionality of the work on the iPad is a bit to complex (or limited even with a mouse or trackpad).

  • @Johnov

    I agree that it makes more sense to compare and contrast the iPad Pros as an alternative to the MacBook Pros rather than the Air. This is not only because of the comparable pricing range, but also because of the specs, pro-motion display, superior screen quality, and better speaker quality that those devices have over their Air counterparts.

    I have two iPads: an iPad Air 6 (13 inch) and a new iPad mini 7. I also have a Mac Mini M1. Ideally, I would like to get to be able to use only iOS devices. My major usage for all my devices is media consumption (video and reading books (Kindle) and magazines (Readly)) and writing and reviewing articles. For my writing tasks I use Markdown (Taio app) and plain text (Textastic app on iOS and BBEdit app on macOS). For my usage there is only one issue holding me back - data backup. When you use iOS devices iCloud is realistically your only backup (I know you can in theory manually backup iCloud based files to an external storage device, but you would only do it once). On macOS there are multiple backup options. I use iCloud, Time Machine and and external SSD (using an app called Get Backup Pro (really, really good app).
    So I would be interested to know what you use for your data backup.
    Regards,
    Peter

I plan to get a Mac Mini M4 Pro with max CPU and GPU core count, at least 1TB SSD and 10 Gbit/s ethernet. What bothers me the most about iPads beyond the mini is that battery life. For the price point directly competing and surpassing prices of a Mac laptop....it doesn't make sense. iPads have been stuck with 10hr battery life forever which in reality daily use cannot be truly 10 hours. A MacBook Air is a much more sensible choice for a well rounded machine that has a ton more functionality, real OS, that keyboard, a serious battery, and is very mobile. The price is so close that it's a no brainer to just get an MBA. Do I have an iPad? yes, and iPad mini 6th gen and its fantastic. Need an apple pencil? well an apple pencil can't be used on a MacBook. So neither can replace another. Rather it's an alternative, a sidekick.

    The short answer is…. Yes, unless you need to do more than shopping lists Excel - the user experience is far too buggy and the functionality just isn’t there for anything more; And you don’t want to add a monitor - because the keyboard shortcuts don’t work when you connect. But for all email, web-browsing, PPT, etc etc it’s fine. With a tiny bit of effort (NOT even MacOS) Apple could make the iPad Functionality up to 95% as good as a laptop, but in a better form factor. Come on!

    Compromise, I've found.
    I heard you in the pod the other day mention how you went for the 1tb for the first time ever, simply due to the RAM (and P core).
    I tried, have the studio display/cal digit etc. the OS is just such a pronounced limiting factor that I had to get a mac mini.

    I just wish it had 720Hz touch sample rate, and a way to remove ALL animations like on Android. Ive used ROG Phone 5, and removing animations made it insanely snappy. And with M4 och A18 Pro, it would feel like heaven. But now, animations make it feel sluggish on iOS/iPadOS. Yes, im impatient AF

    If you were just using your iPad for like email websites and just regular online activity, I guess it could work as a computer. However, if you need to be able to install a specialized software or just random software in general, you’re much better off with just a Mac or a regular PC hell even Linux is a much better choice. I also still believe that the iPad would be much better off running macOS this way you can remove all of those software limitations because that is the biggest problem with the iPad is just a software limitations and how lockdown it is. 😢

    iPad Mini: iPadOS
    iPad: iPadOS
    iPad Air: MacOS
    iPad Pro: MacOS
    Break things down like this, and I’d be super happy. Gives everyone a choice in device if they insist that iPadOs / a dumbed down OS is best for them and those like myself that just want a touchscreen, slate Mac that is like a surface.

    I wonder Fernando… with Apple’s push to Apple Intelligence, along with Mark Gurman’s rumors of an LLM Siri in iOS 19.4-ish if they will bring the iPad Pro up to a standard 16 gig RAM at base prices, instead of being able to get that only if you upgrade to the 1 tb configuration? I guess this would mean that my idea would not happen until M5 comes out for it then?

    I have a M4 iPad Pro and I like it for what it can do - it's a real speed demon but there is one area where I still can't use any iPad and that is with my 3D printer and prusaslicer. That software hasn't been released for the iPad and it's a shame with all that power. (Not blaming Apple for that - just noting that it's the one BIG thing I have to defer to my MacBook Pro (Also now an M4). Along that line - software installs are limited to what Apple will allow - unless you get a developer's license - and still it's not as easy as downloading a DMG installer. Interestingly I have cell service on my iPad and do use it on the go and that's a big plus when I want a big screen and am not near any wifi hotspots. (Yeah- could use my iPhone as that hotspot, but....)

    anyone else find that the iPadPro struggles with multiple google doc/sheets/slides tabs in its browser? the app alternatives are complete garbage. I know that youtubers use these for content creation but many use it for more traditional jobs and its frustrating to know that it can process multimedia with no problem but slows down to a crawl when too many google suite windows are open.

    Viewers should always remember this channel is promoting a grift for both itself and Apple. Also, this thing will never be a laptop, because a laptop's #1 job is to remain ON your lap - this thing with the keyboard will fall over all the time. Battery also sucks.
