@@leotyson1001 It drops in just a few hours, I’m doing final editing touches right now. It’s certainly my personal favourite episode I’ve made so far, you’ll really enjoy it!
the ending where Tanya leads Liu into a dark cave and then jumps Liu with Shinnok to blow him up fucking TERRIFIED me as a kid - the hero of the series got merc’d in a dark cave with no one around to see what happened… little did I know that the Deadly Alliance intro was just around the corner to scare me even more!
This terrified me as a kid too! I remember thinking Tanya was going to be one of the new female protagonist and she turned out to be a traitor to her realm and sided with the brotherhood of shadow. This was some dark stuff back then. Lui got decimated. Tanya actually became one of my favourites In Deception lore wise. Good times
Mythologies is a god awful game, but I have to admit when I was a kid I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen, those super cheesy live action sequences blew my mind
18:00 This is one of those cases where I didn't learn something was poorly received or hated until years later as an adult. Because I remember me and my friends(and the majority of kids at my school who played MK4/Gold) were talking about it nonstop. In fact, two of my best friends growing up who lived right around the corner from me were OBSESSED with MK4 and we would play it NON STOP. Always having heated rivalries and tournaments lol. This was before I came of age and started paying attention to(or even noticing) things like review scores. I didn't learn until after Deadly Alliance released that MK4 was seen as a bad entry when reading articles talking about it as "that game no one remembers" etc. I loved MK4 and Gold.
That’s really great though. The best part of being a kid is almost every game you got, you really cherished and enjoyed even if the general consensus didn’t
Same here. As a kid playing on N64, MK Trilogy was pretty hard. I only got to Motaro a handful of times, and only beat him 1-2 times. Never beat Shao Kahn. For MK4 I really enjoyed the switch to 3D and how the game seemed "more fair". It took me a while to beat Goro, but once I did I felt such a great accomplishment. Then when I got older I got an Xbox for Christmas and soon got Deadly Alliance, which also felt so fresh to me back then. I didn't wind up getting Deception, but I absolutely loved Armageddon for what it was, especially the Kreate a Fighter mode.
@@DonCriticyeah, I have a feeling that the consensus back then were adults and didn't really look for guidance from the younger generation though granted this was a mature rated game
It wasn't mentioned in the video, but it should be noted that Kitana, Noob, and Kano were planned for MK4 (they were seen and playable in pre-release footage), but replaced by Tanya, Reiko, and Jarek respectively because Midway felt the game didn't have enough new characters. Noob became a hidden playable character in the home versions. Kitana wasn't completely removed because her model was needed for Liu Kang's ending for the arcade and N64 versions since those used in-game cutscenes while the PS1 and PC versions used FMV videos so an unfinished version of Kitana can be played by hacking the game. Goro was also not in the arcade version and was home console exclusive.
MK4 was super hype and one of my favorites. I’m surprised to hear that it had a negative response. Love these videos and can’t believe they aren’t getting more views. Thank you for making them!
I was really young. Played 2, 3 and trilogy nearly every weekend. When me and my cousin rented out 4 from the local blockbuster we couldn't believe how bad it was 😂 definitely paved the way for future titles though.
Agreed. At the time, it was one of my favorite games, and I still have fond memories of it. Fujin was such a great new fighter, I wish he had replaced Raiden in the lore
I appreciate these uploads because I enjoy MK lore but haven’t gotten around to playing/finishing most of them. They’re also getting me excited for MK1’s release!
My favorite too. I was born in 92, and I believe MK4 came out 97?? 5 yrs old, I was a Nintendo 64 kid. Super Mario, MK4, Super Smash Bros, and Banjo Kazooie hahahahahah
Yes!! The background music for MK Trilogy and MK4 were so good and terrifying in a way. With MK11 it's like you're listening to a symphony or something lol.
I mostly played MK Gold because it had Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Robots and Baraka. Overall, I feel a strange affection to this game plus I love how they used cutscenes to tell the story.
@@FreeOpenTruth you know that the PS1 version isn't the arcade version either right? The arcade didn't have Goro in it at all; Quan Chi was the sub-boss.

Johnny Cage is one of the greats! Yeah the late 90’s had so many great fighting games, competition was super strong back then. Soulcalibur, Tekken, Killer Instinct, Dead or Alive. You were never stuck for a new fighting game haha
MK4 was my first introduction to this series and I never thought it was bad or poorly written. Looking at it now it hasn’t aged the best but there were some valuable tidbits like Scorpion and Sub Zero learning they were both set up, Shinnok *is* canonically unstoppable but Quan Chi’s double crossing backfired, and that there are more than 1 gods that can be protectors.
I really love Mythologies. I mastered the gameplay with the “B” button and got the levels memorized. I enjoyed the game so much, I replayed it on the N64. Wish NetherRealm would make another Mythologies, there’s so much potential.

Mortal4Kombat mlMy favorite MK game till this day! This was the FIRST VIDEO GAME I EVER PLAYED! At only 4 years old on the N64 Haha good times This game needs a Remaster
So basically, if Special Forces wasn't rushed, and maybe waited for the PS2, it could have been the first Shaolin Monks. I mean, it's the exact same thing, just without platforming... or any polish whatsoever.
This was the one our dad took away for a month because of our fighting.😂 Pretty sure Jax has the worst ending in 4. Playing these games into the wee hours of the morning just beating the ladder with each character is still a thing I do.
I always thought Jarek had the worst one. Someone on RUclips redid his with the _Unreal Engine_ a couple of years ago, and made it look way better. From the graphics to him actually being flip-kicked off of the cliff instead of Sonya just side stepping out of the way. He still made that weird Raiden sound when he fell off though, which is actually hilarious. And then the same RUclips account actually redid the Jax ending to explain it more.
I had the idea for Mythologies before it was a thing. I thought it would be a cool game to just tear though piles of minions. Then Sub-Zero Mythologies came out and holy shit! Exactly what I came up with... except it was far from it. Horrible controls, platforming puzzles and cheap deaths. The idea was there, just so poorly executed. It honestly felt like a game where some 3rd party just ripped the characters and pasted them into some cheap game and slapped a MK sticker on it to sell knock offs. Then MK4 came out. While I liked it, it felt like such a step backwards. Sure it was 3D, but who cared. Such low poly characters when we just had digitized actors. The fun part of the gore and fatalities was because it was realistic humans. Now with polygon cartoons it was more of a laugh watching Daffy Duck explode than an "ooooh" watching a human have their spine ripped out. Every character felt and played the same. Preforming moves was more of a test of memorization than fluid combos. Weapons was interesting but again you had to memorize combos to pull your weapons and it didn't really make much of a difference in combat. Developers often make the mistake of doing something new, not because it's better, but because they can. I think going 3d was one of those mistakes when the hardware was so young.
Even then I would just opt to rent Trilogy over MK4. I didn't necessarily hate MK4 and my friend and I had fun with two player mode, the unlockables, etc. but Trilogy was just a more fun game to play overall. More fast paced, fluid, and dynamic.
MK4 was when i kinda dropped the series and went back to playing trilogy with my friends, i grinded deadly alliance and deception for a while but couldnt bring myself to playing newer titles
I've been playing MK since the first one came out. However, with MK4, it felt as if it had been rushed out. I had the feeling MK4 could have turned out better if more time was spent on it (graphics, movement of the characters and the endings specifically).
@@DonCritic I didn't get far into the game only onto the second level because I had no way of saving the game did the game even have fatalities I don't remember their being only the finish him
The intro for MK4 (live action one) had me scared as a little kid, same with the spikes and music. I was no older than 6-7 cuz my dad was a huge fan of the original arcade games so he had MK4 on PSOne
I think the problem was that Midway deemed the MK name as bigger than the games themselves. They were becoming cheaper and cheaper and in these games that went too far. Have anyone not tested MKM:SZ to noticed how unplayable it was? No comments on MKSF. I think MK4 is a funny game and I enojoyed playing it. But, Lord... cheapness everywhere. Few characters (same as MK3), same dial combos for all of them, no actual boss fight, endings were played by the characters instead of being images and the champion screen was just a flat image with no animation whatsoever.
Even when we were only like 10 or 11 years old, my friend and I laughed hysterically at Jarek's goofy scream and Jax doing his best Dirty Harry impersonation. I don't know if they were intentionally trying to be funny or if they wanted the scene to be taken seriously.
First, how come a Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection hasn't been released since the PS3 & 360? Second, how come Mortal Kombat 4 is never rereleased and made for new consoles? Doesn't Netherrealm Studios have the rights and can make it?
I just don’t think they want to put the resources in to make a remaster at the moment. They seem to have been really busy working on the new MK1. Although having a way to play the pre-MKX games on modern consoles would be great
For me this was The Mortal Kombat Game. First found it in a game saloon, later got it on my PC. I missed previous installments at the time, but when returned later, I didn't like the inconsistent art style - digitized characters on a drawn backgrounds.
Honestly, by that point I had no interest. I wasn't interested in the concept at all, and I wasn't the biggest fan of Mythologies despite the fact that I wanted Sub-Zero to have his own game ever since I first played MK2.
Okay but who in the hell is the dude in middle of Kano and tremor at 20:45 because tasia and no face are on the side /behind Kano and jarrek is on the side of tremor
How’ does shinnok get the amulet back if sub zero apparently got it for quan chi in mythologies but then sub zero ends up beating shinnok at the end of that game ? So how does shinnok have the amulet in MK 4 ??
Maybe the Amulet that Quan Chi gives to Shinnok in Mythologies, and that Sub Zero passes to Raiden was a replica and Quan Chi kept the real one for himself
@julianmitchell5776 Quan Chi tricked his master & tricked Bi-Han & Raiden. Once he received the real amulet from Bi-Han he gaved Shinnok a fake amulet. Shinnok's Amulet gave Quan Chi the ability to travel outside to the other realms since his magic only limited him to travel between the Netherrealm & Earthrealm also the amulet increased his magic ten fold which it was key to reviving Onaga's army.
I think mk mythologies is worth a revisit. I used try like hell to play sub zero, I was young I thought it was just a big kid game lol. I had no idea it was actually bad.
I remember how much of a pain in the @ zz MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero was. It took me forever to beat. This live character are HILARIOUS looking back at it. 😂😂😂
I bought Mythologies: Sub-Zero during a 4 day trip to Gothemburg. Bought it the first day and was so hyped to come home to my PlayStation. Looked through the manual every night. Well... You know the end of this story. Another disapointed child.
MK4 is good, I liked it, I don't understand why some people say it's the worst of the older games. Obviously today it looks ugly and the 2D games hold up a lot better, 2D resists the passage of time a lot better than early 3D and polygons, but back then 4 looked fine. In terms of gameplay it's good, some of the new characters are boring but the roster is ok, the stages are ok, it brought back the fantasy and mistery feeling of 1 and 2 in terms of stages, colors, music and atmosphere, and I think it's very underrated. I remember running home so excited when i got it for PC, I couldn't wait to play it!. If you had a 3DFX Voodoo card it looked awesome (for its time). MK4 is a solid very underrated entry. And in my opinion, the last good MK until MK9. The really bad ones are the PS2 trilogy. I hated those so much!. The gameplay was horrible, the direction the story and characters took was bad, like "Liu Kang is dead" WTF??. To this day I really dislike Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armaggedon, to me that's the worst era of the franchise, those games are a mess, it's like they lost the way for years trying to do something that's not MK. I know a lot of people like those games and they were succesful so I'm in the minority here (I can't imagine why MK fans liked those games), but to me that dark age after 4 and before 9 felt like MK was dead. I'm happy MK9 soft rebooted the saga and brought back "real Mortal Kombat" in terms of gameplay, characters, story, atmosphere and feeling. MK9 was a great comeback.
The MK4 issue lies in the replacement of characters like Jarek, Fujin, Kai, and Tanya, which were disappointing. Quan Chi is the best new character. The game felt fairer with difficulty than older games, and the alt costumes were enjoyable but the weapons seemed pointless. Ending videos were cheesy but I'm glad they had them compared to text. Shinnok was alright but found him less intimidating than Quan Chi. I loved he was a more grounded boss not over powered and playable but compared to Shang Tsung which could transform or Shao Kahn which had super strength just seem lack luster.
I bought Mythologies: Sub-Zero during a 4 day trip to Gothenburg. Bought it the first day and was so hyped to come home to my PlayStation. Looked through the manual every night. Well... You know the end of this story. Another disapointed child 😢
Aww at least it still gave you some good memories. Video Game Manuals used to be so good, flicking through them and reading all the lore and details before you got home to play the game was so much fun
@@DonCritic That's true. Playstation and N64 feels like the last consoles where the manuals of the games were fascinating. Or maybe they just were the last consoles I found interesting.
I had MK4 on the N64 and I didn’t know that Noob Saibot was a hidden character in it, I might have enjoyed the game a bit more if I did know 😢 to me UMK3 was better than MK4. What I did like was that you were able to play as the final boss Shinnok which you weren’t able to do in previous games (except Trilogy but none of the boss characters had fatalities if I remember correctly). And I think Goro would’ve been a better unlockable character alongside Noob Saibot than Meat and the fans would’ve preferred that as I know that I would’ve preferred it
This game was so bad, but I love it because it (along with Tekken 3 and the OG Dual Shock) were the first things I bought with my very first paycheck. I used up every bit of the ink from our printer to print out the fatalities and moves. The internet was just more exciting back then because the "new" was still there.
I think I'm the only one on this planet that enjoyed mkm Sub-Zero, the only gripe I have is the turn button and the lack of fatalities besides that I enjoyed it
MK 4 seemed like a step back from graphics design to me. I’ve always like the backgrounds of MK series but MK4 just seemed bland. Even the characters looked off. As much as I am a MK fan, MK4 just didn’t do it for me.

So basically, if Special Forces wasn't rushed, and maybe waited for the PS2, it could have been the first Shaolin Monks. I mean, it's the exact same thing, just without platforming... or any polish whatsoever.
Till this day mortal Kombat mythologies is still the hardest game
[6:32] "What did you mean by that?"😂😅😂
What did I say? 😄
@@DonCritic it's a Dry LAME Dad Joke i was try to make...
Sorry my Humer is kinda BONE DRY today...

TUFF CROUD, TUFF CROUD.....
Oh right haha 😂 at least you tried, that’s all that matters
@@DonCritic Thank you
Amazing video. Thank you so much for making it ❤
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching friend!
Never seen these mk4 animations and even better in HD
I like mk4 for its atmosphere, very gritty and dark but hilarious due to the endings and voice lines.
Another great one! Shame the game is seen as a blemish tho. I saw that new mk1 trailer aswell. Am confused but excited. Good stuff as always!
Thanks Jon! The new MK1 does look very exciting, we’ll catch up to it in the Explained series pretty quickly!
I've been playing MK since the first one came out. However, with MK4, it felt as if it had been rushed out. I had the feeling MK4 could have turned out better if more time was spent on it (graphics, movement of the characters and the endings specifically).
I played mythology subzero on the n64 and never knew that there was cutscenes
I should’ve clarified it better in the video, but only the PlayStation version had the FMV cutscenes due to the CD format 🙏
@@DonCritic I didn't get far into the game only onto the second level because I had no way of saving the game did the game even have fatalities I don't remember their being only the finish him
Yeah it just had finish him, where you could do Sub Zero’s MK1 fatality
The intro for MK4 (live action one) had me scared as a little kid, same with the spikes and music. I was no older than 6-7 cuz my dad was a huge fan of the original arcade games so he had MK4 on PSOne
Excellent series. Thank you!
You’re welcome! 🙏
"Wrong Jerik this is not a Bru.Tal.Ity this is a Fa.Ta.Lity"😂😂😂
😂 it’s like Shakespeare
@DonCritic Macbeth didn't have a single line with such eloquence. This writing moves beyond simple poetry and cannot be simply heard, only felt 🤣🤣🤣
Although having a way to play the pre-MKX games on modern consoles would be great
Great video!!! Really helped clear it up for me, as I could never remember which one I had lol, think I had mk3 trilogy and the mk3 ultimate
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
Great series... I love them all
I liked mythologies, even though gameplay wasn’t the best, really enjoyed the story with videos
When i first saw mk4 in the arcade, i was like, "what happened?!"
10:38 MK4 Story Explained
For me this was The Mortal Kombat Game. First found it in a game saloon, later got it on my PC. I missed previous installments at the time, but when returned later, I didn't like the inconsistent art style - digitized characters on a drawn backgrounds.
I still don't understand why the game isn't more hyped since for a loooong time it used to be the only MK game for PC.
Yessir 💪💪💪
The Jax ending 🤣🤣🤣
So funny 😂
Never played MK Special Forces, from the reviews I've heard, I didn't miss much
I’ve played it twice and both times I dragged myself through it 😅 not very fun
Honestly, by that point I had no interest. I wasn't interested in the concept at all, and I wasn't the biggest fan of Mythologies despite the fact that I wanted Sub-Zero to have his own game ever since I first played MK2.
What version of the MK theme is the one in the intro? Tried shazaming it but it's too short and ends too abruptly for an accurate result...
Check my description 🙂
Okay but who in the hell is the dude in middle of Kano and tremor at 20:45 because tasia and no face are on the side /behind Kano and jarrek is on the side of tremor
Honestly I have no idea 😂 I assume it was another boss that they had to cut from the game cause they had to rush it to completion
@@DonCritic Was it supposed to be Kabal? He was a Black Dragon.
It could be, but it’s not mentioned in the game anywhere who it is
My cousin has 4 on Nintendo 64 was best time ever lol 😂 I remember my cousin making nephew cry doing fatalities 😅Classic
I honestly did not enjoy playing it for the video 😂 and yeah the characters do look funny 😄
@@DonCritic I was just THAT much of an MK fan. I had to beat the game. But I hated it lol.
Remember having this game for both Dreamcast and N64 but my brother and I only played the N64 version for whatever reason I don’t know lol
"I will stay to protect Earth realm."
*dies next game*
😂 famous last words
Oh fuhhhk
I swear you could play as goro as well
Yeah you could, he was another hidden character
I think I'm the only one on this planet that enjoyed mkm Sub-Zero, the only gripe I have is the turn button and the lack of fatalities besides that I enjoyed it
MK 3 Gold had all the boss characters I’ve been wanting to play with . I need that arcade in the cavern
I crushed that game in one shot I loved it I was like 12yrs old , IGN even sucked then 😂
MK4 is the one main game that aged like milk.
It really did 😅
To me it has a certain charm to it, and I love.the story line..but I can get why ppl don't enjoy it now.✌️
@@DonCritic it's better than the other 3D games that play like shit
Goro was also playable
I spent hours playing this game on the PS1
I could never figure out how to escape Fuijn's one hit kill. Had to give up on that game.
MK4 was the 1st in the series I played, Then played MK 3U
Mk mythologies was dope
I would if nowadays ending have animation
Hopefully in MK1!
Your voice reminds me of Nate the great from Ted Lasso ! 🙌🏻
Haha I don’t know who that is 😄
MK 4 seemed like a step back from graphics design to me. I’ve always like the backgrounds of MK series but MK4 just seemed bland. Even the characters looked off. As much as I am a MK fan, MK4 just didn’t do it for me.
I loved Mythologies. So what it was a little hard and you had to manually turn around. It was definitely better than MK4 that's for sure
MK4 had my favorite endings😂
If sub zero mythologies got a remake with better graphics it would be lit matter of fact the best mk game of all time
