@@shawns860 It's very similar to Katsuhiro Harada (the director of Tekken since Tekken 4, and a major member of the team behind Tekken 3). Harada has essentially turned one of the most story driven franchises in gaming to a tournament experience. Whenever you look at the series after Tekken 4 you see how much the stigma of "story dos not matter in fighting games" is enforced when with characters that are simplified to the bare minimum of storytelling (Bruce Irvin went from a street grown pit fighter, to a mercenary with no memory after a plane crash that for Kazuya, to simply a guy that enters a tournament just to have fun. No concluding with Kazuya, no attempt to come to terms with who he was or why he left Kazuya's militia, nothing).

Man, I was never into Tekken enough to get into the story (really only ever liked 3. 2 would have been perfect, but it was too slow for me), but that is terrible.
The people behind MK at least care enough to put a half-assed attempt into maintaining some continuity in lore

    • @musicmodjoe2139
      @musicmodjoe2139 5 лет назад +13

@@shawns860 Tekken 7 feels like an attempt at closure without understanding the concept. Much like MKX and MK11 members of the old cast are thrown to the side (or as dlc). Much like netherealm's MK games they are trying to give you a cinematic experience, but that layer of makeup covers gaping holes in the plot, in the character development and in the continuity. Here's an example: Ever since Tekken 3 Jun Kazama has been absent, in Tekken 4 she appears as a vision in front of her son's eyes (fair enough if we try to write a compelling character) and ever since than? NOTHING!
Jinpachi Mishima was brought to the roster (as he was exisiting sound data in Tekken 4), and Asuka Kazama (essentialy a character model swap of Jun from tekken tag 1) was brought in (no connection to Jun or Jin, no nothing). Tekken 7 tried to be cinematic and conclude the story (how do you conclude a story when you bring in Akuma from street fighter and retcon him into the series?)
Back to MK, I think netherealm follows the metal gear solid school of cutscenes (ie, voice actors carry the swiss cheese of a script, not the localization, just the original). MK suffers from the exact same problems as Tekken, Soul Calibur and other fighting games that talk cinematic but don't grasp STORY.
The Midway era (punching bag supreme by Netherealm and by some of the fans) had its gaping holes from time to time (Shujinko aging but none of the roster's cast) but something remains that holds it together: Lore for characters, stages and endings that connect to the defeat of Onaga. Tekken doesn't do that anymore.

The tournament in MK1 was just a Shaolin martial arts tournament that Shang Tsung took control of. Liu Kang's goal was to defeat Goro and return the tournament's control back to the shaolin, which is apparent in his ending.
The comic also says that Shang Tsung's motive is that he believes that Liu Kang's defeat at the hands of Goro will destroy any hope the shaolin have of taking back the competition.
I believe Kano also takes control of the tournament in his ending.
MK2 adds on that Tsung took control of the tournament to "unbalance the furies", which will weaken Earth's dimensional barriers and allow Shao Kahn to invade. So yeah, the tournament was VERY different. I think its current version was introduced in the movie.
I'm also surprised you didn't mention the MK4 prequel comic.
I've used some of the bio stuff in my own fanfiction series, such as Chow, where I've had him and Liu Kang reunite. I also changed Liu to being his surname, just makes more sense and for consistency.
Great video as always, can't wait to see if you'll talk about the other prequel comics.

    • @metalmario991
      @metalmario991 5 лет назад +17

@@danieltarczynski6559 The attract more for MK1 showed character bios and a brief story blurb. This is how the latter goes: "A 2000 year old half-human dragon, Goro remains undefeated for the past 500 years. He won the title of Grand Champion by defeating Kung Lao, a Shaolin fighting monk. It was during this period that the tournament fell into Shang Tsung's hands and was corrupted."
In MK1 and MK2 lore, the tournament was just an ancient shaolin martial arts competition that Tsung took control of. No Outworld vs. Earthrealm dynamic.

Man, Malibu comics had some really cool ideas that would be great in future adaptations or games.
Baraka was a nominal good guy, a mutant fighting to free his people from the rule of Shao Kahn. Hell, in his own dedicated comic he's basically the Mandalorian, protecting this special child from Shao Kahn's minions. What makes that story really interesting is that just like in the Mandalorian, a mysterious dark figure comes in and takes the baby away to prepare for her destiny. Noob Saibot. Who in the comics had nothing to do with Bi Han, and was instead a shadowy hero.
Bi Han was the final hero of the series, making the final win for EarthRealm at the cost of his life, while Scorpion was the villain, working for Shao Kahn to conquer. Sub Zero also had this cool arc where he had to overcome his fear of Scorpion.
Kung Lao wasn't Liu Kang's second, no he's this lone wolf out to redeem his family's name and honor after the defeat of the first Kung Lao.
There was Sing and Sang, the Order of the Light's chosen champions, two twins who would fuse into one being. What was cool about that was when one of the twins died, the other fused with him one last time, creating a half-dead warrior that could be controlled by Shao Kahn.
Johnny had a cool body guard, Bo, and Raiden had two hot ninja chicks working for him.
But the coolest thing was Kano. Specifically how he was more then just some scumbag that Sonya was hunting, that Raiden tried recruiting him against Shao Kahn. Kano screwed him over, but he was actually kinda remorseful about the act, and defied Shao Kahn by letting Raiden escape rather then kill him.

I honestly wouldn't take any of the Not Best Friend's opinions seriously since from what I have seen so far, they neither pay attention to stuff that well and they already seem ready to hate the 3D era so I don't see much value there. Also recently watched Mat play Armageddon Konquest and immediately turned off the video when it had Delia calling Argus by name and Mat said "So this is Jerrod." I already knew he'd have a negative opinion but that just shows where it'd come from, ignorance. Hell, in his MK11 playthrough he didn't even know why the Cyber Lin-Kuei would side with Kronika...maybe because Sub-Zero destroyed them all so they want a better future...? And he doesn't even have to read the comics, MKX I am pretty sure says this too.

My first MK game was MK vs. DC if you can believe it, but unlike most normies I actually went back and actively sought out the older games to understand the story and characters better and to get more of the gameplay I liked and see how it evolved over time, I still have my Classic Xbox and got Deception and Deadly Alliance I thoroughly enjoyed both and despite me vastly preferring the gameplay of 9 and X, the 3D era had undeniably better Worldbuilding with conquest mode in Deception sending you on a grand adventure across the realms.

Maybe your familiar with how cursed the wider audience market strategy/mythology/phrase has become because it's basically the same problem, another good analogy would be akin to an invasive species moving in and destroying the local ecology. Very good, I just have a few doubts...
1 - Who fights against whom in the tournament?
2 - How many fighters are there in total in the tournament? I imagine they are the playable characters plus Goro and excluding Raiden, but if that's the case, why were there so many people? Spectators?
3 - Which side were the characters on? Because between EarthRealm and Outworld, only Goro was from Outworld. My interpretation is that Sub-Zero was hired by Shang Tsung (as seen in the final cinematic of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero) but went with the hidden intention of killing him for payment (as mentioned in his ending in the first game). Scorpion went to kill Sub-Zero with the intention of defeating all fighters until reaching Sub-Zero, so it would also serve Shang Tsung, or at least help him. Kano, even though he intends to kill Shang Tsung and steal the gold, would be against Sonya no matter what, so Shang Tsung would put him against her. And with that, we would have Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Goro indirectly or directly benefiting Outworld, and Liu Kang, Cage, and Sonya on the side of EarthRealm. Do you think that makes sense?
4 - Reptile is not mentioned yet, but he was hidden protecting Shang Tsung, as explained in his intro in MK2. Perhaps he faced Kano or Sub-Zero (who surely tried to kill Tsung) one night while the tournament fighters rested.
5 - Is there no order of the matchups? The only thing known is that the last one was between Goro and Liu Kang, and Liu Kang won.
6 - In the comic, Tsung personally invites Raiden, but he never participated because he is a deity, so officially, why did he invite him?
I know there may be many inconsistencies, but if there is no official answer, it would be good to create an alternative that makes sense within the known canon.

That actually works well with the backstory of the tournament. There's no real need for kombatants from the Outworld side to participate. Outworld's already won the previous tournaments, and Goro is grand champion, having beaten the previous one, Kung Lao.
The fight is mainly to decide whether or not Earthrealm wrestles control of the tournament from Outworld, represented by Goro and Shang Tsung, and in general to decide who is the next champion. Granted, there can still be Outworld participants off-screen, but even "MK1 roster plus other kombatants from Earth" works in the context of the later lore.
Of course, MK2011 strictly establishes that there are Outworld participants, even retconning some kombatants from later games into the story.

  • @sonic8005

In games and other materials, Shang Tsung stealing souls was altered so that he needed to do so to expand his lifespan... though they never state anywhere except the comic that it was meant to be because of a curse from the gods. Most of the time it's depicted as Shang Tsung attempting to become more powerful.
By MK 2, Raiden was given a much different role than his jackass persona of being the kind of god who would change the tournament rules to allow other gods to compete... which ended in the apocalypse. "Have a nice day" indeed, but by 3 the past we've known him for in his MK 1 ending is totally forgotten, so it's no fault on the reboot's part.
Also the Shang Tsung being assassinated by Kano and Sub-Zero were... well, to be blunt, those were only put into the story so that the characters have a reason to compete in the tournament and thus have a reason to go to the last boss. The change in plotline wasn't that bad and in other media (such as the tv series Conquest) the Lin Kuei had been hired by Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn. Not to mention Kano ended up working for Shao Kahn in MK3 and in Deadly Alliance Kano ended up working for Shang Tsung. Since Shang Tsung's wealthy enemies have never been established in any capacity it's probably best to just forget them the same way we can forget evil Raiden.

It'll never happened, but it'd be fun if there were ever a Mortal Kombat Zero that ignores all the retcons up to and including Raiden being a protector of Earthrealm instead of just a dick and looked into the original original backstories. Would probably have to tag Tobias to make it feel authentic if he's still got it.

2:01 It was the Elder Gods being dumb as usual. "We'll punish Shang Tsung for stealing someone's soul by forcing him to steal souls to survive even though that'll make him stronger and more powerful."

If there's no story than what's the point? I'm just fighting just to fight, that's pointless.
