This was really great. I'm gonna go back and watch the rest. You perfectly articulated what this game felt like when it came out. I hope you include Shaolin Monks in your series.
I loved the RPG within the game (I think it was Deception actually). You played as a brand new character but you encountered every MK character along the way, spanning every realm and revealing a lot of lore. There was also a chess side game that was kind of cool (again, I don't remember which game it was in... it could have been DA, Deception or Armageddon).
Deception was THE SHIT. What a cool ass game. Holy fuck, how I loved playing Konquest. Awesome stuff. Not even the new Street Fighter World Tour mode can hold a candle to Konquest. It felt alive. Getting to know the realms, everything, timeless stuff. Way better than the new MK story modes as well.
It was this game that introduced me to the band Adema! I still love that song to this day. Actually found the ep it was on and bought it hahaha. I had so much fun with this game. Great in depth video and look back down memory lane.
Being someone who has played all the mortal kombats as a kid, I love seeing them show love to all the older mortal kombats that came before it . Mortal kombat 1 is gonna be the new best mortal kombat game !
Yeah this is where Mortal Kombat lost me. I played the crap out of the first four games and considered myself a pretty big fan. Heck, to this day I'll defend the first movie to the death. I dunno, something about this game just didn't feel special. It was like Mortal Kombat was just another fighting game and not it's own unique thing.
22:03 I can't believe it. Even if you excuse the technicality of Sub Zero being two different characters in MK1 and MK2, this means that there is not a single character who appears in every single game!
I've never liked this game because for me it wasn't an actual Mortal Kombat. I also think Resident Evil 4 isn't a Resident Evil game if it helps to understand my point. But, there's more to it. Here in Argentina, videogames titles were kind of delayed and apparently lasted more than in the three big markets in the world. So, we never felt that five year gap between MK4 and MK:DA, since we were still playing MK4 as if it was new. Also, by 2002 arcades were still a big deal (we were still playing everything from SF2 to KOF 2002), PSX was still very popular (mine broke in 2004) and PS2 was very expensive. So, we also never really lived that MK 3D era. By the time PS2 was accesible and reached its peak here, MK Armageddon was already a couple of years old and was the game most of us prefered just because of its roster. It really socked me when I read almost a decade from its release how important and famous MK Deadly Alliance was, is for the franchise.
It wasn't really open to the public as a local released to the arcades but in the video History of MK, they picked random cities and left a few cabinets to test out
A shame most of the characters that debuted here are seemingly disliked by the fanbase. Though in recent years it seems many want to see more of them finally return playable in some fashion. Kai, Mavado, Sareena, Reiko, Havik and so on. Even more obscure kombatants like No Face and Jataaka. I feel Deadly Alliance is what Mortal Kombat 4 SHOULD have been back in 1997. Sure, MK4 was the first 3D game in the Mortal Kombat series and was fun but in terms of gameplay it was really just MK3 given a three-dimensional skin. This game really deserves more love for getting the then overexposed franchise out of its funk. 😇 I really think Deadly Alliance nailed its presentation. Like you mentioned, the likes of Shao Kahn (as far as we're aware...) and the main hero Liu Kang being killed from the start really let you know the stakes are higher more than ever and this "deadly alliance" is not to be underestimated. And there is also this looming atmosphere of sinister dread, doom, mystery, hopelessness, and seriousness throughout the game's plot, character designs, stages, endings, and even the music. As well as the constant foreshadowing about this "Dragon King" possibly being an even greater threat in the near future despite the current crisis with the Deadly Alliance to the realms. Sure there's some levity via the silly unlockable goodies and Johnny Cage's comical bits like his story info in Konquest Mode and his ending but all the characters are dead serious and no nonsense. 🥴
Great comment!! Thank you!! I agree with everything you said. It would be cool to see some more of these 3D era characters return, cause we really didn’t get to see their full potential
We still piss that Liu Kang died in this game, what's MK without Liu Kang? They did our boy Scorpion like that in MK3, which was stupid, if it wasn't for UMK3, MK3 would be trash, even tho it is, to me at lease! Overall, still a good game to play.
I think they just wanted to try something different and having Shang Tsung and Quan Chi take down both Shao Kahn and Liu Kang was the way they wanted to do it. Thanks for watching Troy!
Dude, your MK videos are spot on! This generation of MK games (DA, Deception, and especially Armageddon) and the ridiculous DC crossover obliterated my love for MK! Fortunately, MK9 reignited it with a big bang and it just went up from there.
Never liked the concept of holding the run button to do a combo this game made me like Mortal kombat I hate they went back to the original combat system
You don't hold the run button to do combo, you do combo and it deplete the run meters. The run meter's only purpose was to balance the gameplay so combos can't be abuse. Later MK games borrow a lamer version of Killer Instinct's Combo Breaker called Breaker to the game so to break out of abused combos.
Your first video showed up randomly in my feed. Being that i was 9 when mk1 first dropped and am now 40.. Im roughly 2 hours into nostalgia like no other. Your videos are really cool. Glad they showed up an plan on finishing the series! Got you with a ❤!!
Great game great story but the major issue here imo was one fatality only state fatalities very bad call also konquest was ok but not amazing like deception was pretty much deception was an upgrade but that doesn’t take away from how awesome this one was MK had vanished for years this was a great comeback & return to glory one thing though this does better than Deception is the blood looks more real the way it comes out deception blood doesn’t look as good with the round circles & stuff also graphics for 02 still hold up well imo
It's still my favorite one. It's not perfect but it was a metal game as a kid. Even has the Immortal Music video By Adema on the disc.I loved the multiple fighting styles and impaling a fighter with weapons that stay in the fighter was brutal. The Crypt gave me one of my favorite MK characters Frost. Killing Liu Kang in the intro was wild.
Game came out in 2002. It’s now 2024…. I cant believe I didn’t notice the dagger on the front cover represents a “V” for the number 5 until now 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️ 🤦♂️.
Really weird how MK just died after UMK3. Though, I think the move to 3D didn't do it favors. It probably would have hung in there with 2D digitization for MK4.
There are so many existed forms of Martial Arts, Kung Fu, Wing Chun, Choi Lee Fut, Jeet Kun Do, Judo, Lo Han, Hapkido, etc. not being used here. Since there are so many Ninja Characters in MK, not one is utilized the forms of Ninjitsu.
i own'd MKA when it came out ( I was 7 i think) the intro scared me for some reason seeing liu kangs neck snapped disturbed me (dont know why) so i never played it unless a guest wanted to play it. I remember I got Deception and couldn't stop playing it.
To this day the choices they made for each characters fighting styles still confuses me. Why is the only Japanese ninja character using hapkido and kung fu? Why is the ancient Chinese assassin using shotokan karate? On that note, why is Johnny Cage's style labeled just "karate" and not a different style of karate like Sub-Zero?? Maybe its just nitpicking, but as a martial arts fan it really bugs me lol
One day Liu Kang was practicing martial arts when Shang Tsung snuck up on him and with the help of Quan Chi, snaps his neck. Yeah that’s good story writing.

Holy fuck, how I loved playing Konquest. Awesome stuff. Not even the new Street Fighter World Tour mode can hold a candle to Konquest. It felt alive. Getting to know the realms, everything, timeless stuff. Way better than the new MK story modes as well.
3D era was my favorite I was blessed to play Deception, DA and Armageddon 🔥
MK1 will be based on this era(finally).
It was this game that introduced me to the band Adema!
I still love that song to this day.
Actually found the ep it was on and bought it hahaha.
I had so much fun with this game.
Great in depth video and look back down memory lane.
Really! That’s awesome! So glad the video could bring back some good memories dude!
Same here. I still listen to that song from time to time.
Immortal is a banger to this day.
Would had been nice to had Deadly Alliance Liu Kang as a playable character someday.
This is crazy you come out with this video and Ed Boon confirming the Deadly Alliance is coming back in MK 1 in his interview with Danny Pena.
He didn't say that specifically, he said the game will be a homage to the 3D era. Havik, Nitara, Reiko, Ashrah, Hotaru, and Onaga weren't in DA.
7:48 Cooking with Scorpion has got to be my favorite thing ever. I wish there was more campy silly bonus stuff like that.
I liked the 3D Era of MK idk why most people didn't like it. MKDA is definitely in my top 5
I never noticed the Roman numeral for 5 was what that blade weapon on the cover art was
Cooking with scorpion should return featuring Sub Zero making the dessert
😂 like a 20 minute long episode, that would be really good!
Being someone who has played all the mortal kombats as a kid, I love seeing them show love to all the older mortal kombats that came before it . Mortal kombat 1 is gonna be the new best mortal kombat game !
Can’t wait for the video on MK Deception!!
Still my favorite 3D era game
Thank you! It’ll be launching very soon
Great Memories! Remake It + Deception + Shaolin Monks+ Armageddon!
The forgotten era of Mortal Kombat. It’s a damn shame. These games were PACKED with content, and are among the best games in the franchise.
Koffins FU & RO were the worst yet always hysterical.
This was my favorite mk period. The 3d arena gameplay and style branches along with the graphics. Unmatched
Thank you for the videos! You’re teaching me about the lore! I can’t wait for the next one
You’re welcome! Glad you’re enjoying them!
I really like this video. You break down a lot
Critics:you killed our boy Liu kang
This game sucks.
22:03 I can't believe it. Even if you excuse the technicality of Sub Zero being two different characters in MK1 and MK2, this means that there is not a single character who appears in every single game!
Very true
I couldn't figure out how to complete the simpilest of Combos.
Deception next please.
Coming soon
Deadly alliance was THE BEST MORTAL KOMBAT
That’s very interesting, I didn’t know that! Thank you for sharing 🙂
Great video!
Thanks Mike! Glad you enjoyed it
It wasn't really open to the public as a local released to the arcades but in the video History of MK, they picked random cities and left a few cabinets to test out
Deadly alliance had my favorite character designs 🤘
DA one of my favorites
2:33 All these years later and I’m just now realizing this 😂
Can’t wait for your vid on Decpetion!
Haha yeah it’s a cool detail, very hidden in plain sight. Thanks so much for watching, Deception will be coming soon!
I wish they go back to the 3d style or they could remaster the old games
I’m hoping they do aswell
WHY HAVEN'T THESE GAMES BEEN REMASTERED!?
Back when they actually took risks with their games.
That was great Liu Kang intro…well before he died 🙃
Thanks man!! 🙏
@@DonCritic you’re welcome!!!
Amazing video dude been excited for every single one of thee cant wait for the next one keep it up
Thanks Leo!
I played this shit on all those consoles idc its goated to me
Glad MK1 will focus on the 3D era.
I really think Deadly Alliance nailed its presentation.
Had to come back and fix some spelling errors. 🥹
Scorpions hapkido was fire in this game
That opening scene with liu Kang and kung lao means so much to me . Such a cool moment in mk history
Thanks for watching Troy!
the krypt use to scare me as a child 😂😂
It is pretty dark and spooky 😁
Dude, your MK videos are spot on!
This generation of MK games (DA, Deception, and especially Armageddon) and the ridiculous DC crossover obliterated my love for MK!
Fortunately, MK9 reignited it with a big bang and it just went up from there.
Thank you! 🙏 MK9 will be very soon
This is pretty much mk 5.
Loving these episodes sm!
Writing this on Aug 2023, I’d love to see how MK1 could re invent Nitara and Mavado, hopefully they join the roster!
Your comment didn't age well buddy.😂
Your first video showed up randomly in my feed. Being that i was 9 when mk1 first dropped and am now 40..
Im roughly 2 hours into nostalgia like no other. Your videos are really cool. Glad they showed up an plan on finishing the series!
Got you with a ❤!!
Thanks man! So glad you could find my videos, really happy you’re enjoying them! MK Vs DC is very close to being complete and then it’s MK9, X and 11!
Never liked mk after 3. But I love the recent ones.
If we could get one more 3d MK tht shit would be so lit
MK1 will be based on this era so we can be happy about that.
I love mortal Kombat
Appreciate the short explanation on different martial arts the characters use. The more you know ;)
You’re welcome! I like adding small details like these
lets gooooo!
The only character I hated with a passion in MK5 is Bo Rai what the hell.
Haha 😂 I found him quite funny, I liked his fighting style that reminded me of Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master
@@DonCritic . Nothing wrong with his fighting style it’s just him in general.
From DA to ARMAGEDDON. To monks we're my favs.
Yes sir indeed ShangTsung is a very cool fighter to play as.
One day Liu Kang was practicing martial arts when Shang Tsung snuck up on him and with the help of Quan Chi, snaps his neck. Yeah that’s good story writing.
I could never get into the 3D games due to the clunky combat among my other reasons.
Clunky? These games have smoother gameplay than all three NRS games combined lol
@Iguanimus Prime Every franchise has its generational gap, and I'm someone in the modern camp. Therefore, the modern gamer in me prefers the NRS gameplay. Sorry, not sorry.
@@wickdaline8668 My first MK was 2011, my second was MK2, third was MK3, and fourth was X
I’m in the same generation as you, but the fact of the matter is Deception and Armageddon play infinitely smoother than the jankiness of 2011, or the blandness of MKX, I’d also say it’s smoother than 11 even if I still like 11’s gameplay
@Iguanimus Prime I played through Deadly Alliance and the fighting was still awkward for me. Perhaps I've missed something.
I will say that the hit detection was was my issue in 2011. That was all fixed for me in X and 11.
I wish they could make anothe 3D Mortal Kombat, i still play Deadly Alliance on my PS2 because of the 3D aspect
Maybe they should've never the story of the first Mortal Kombat so seriously but i think they were actually going somewhere with number 5.
Dude the fact that this game got best fighter of the year over SOULCALIBUR 2 is a damn joke.
My fav MK was 3.
MK 4 was my second favorite one. It was fast n brutal. The side step n speed of the game was very satisfying.
I got this game for Christmas when it came out that year, I remember it like it was yesterday, sweet innocent bloody memories on deadly alliance
Sounds like it was an awesome Christmas!!
I got both the GBA games just for collecting and was surprised how fun they are to play.
