They really keep doing onaga dirty. Dude just gets tamed for shao kahn despite being the strongest character (besides the elder gods and the titans and the one being) and straight up needed the entire cast including heroes and villains to defeat him. Armageddon and the deadly alliance are wasted, and the teaser is supposed to be just a titan version of havik.
MK and other media have always used it for excuses to kill off characters and/or bring them back without consequences. I'm not fully on board with it either tbh. It can be done well, or really poorly
How else can they race swap gender swap and focus on dei time travel/multiverse is nothing more than a excuse to change long standing characters and destroy years of story
Liu Kang really said " Y'know what, Hanzo I'm gonna take everything you had and give it to Kuwai Liang, in fact, I'm going to kill your parents so you grow up alone as an orphan too while I'm at it"
I feel like the sheer disrespect done to Kung Lao by the Netherrealm can never be understated. ESPECIALLY in this game. After mk11 it was foreshadowed that Kung Lao would be earthrealm's champion in the next game. Yet HERE WE ARE with Raiden, a character that (IMO) should NOT have been shown in this game. The focus for the obligatory "main character" should have solely been on Kung Lao. He could have been arrogant at first, but been given a character arc where he accepts his role as the champion of earthrealm, not only providing a good story arc but also giving a beloved character the proper respect he was so desperately in need of after the last reboot.
That was Kung Lao's ancestor that was in the ending of Aftermath, the Great Kung Lao. It's very well established in the past timelines that Kung Lao's driving motivation is to restore the honor his family lost when the Great Kung Lao died at the hands of Goro in one of the previous tournaments. Liu Kang choosing the Great Kung Lao as his champion at the end of Aftermath wasn't foreshadowing the younger Kung Lao being the main character. It was demonstrating that Liu would ensure Great Kung Lao won the tournament this time around, which would mean that the younger Kung Lao wouldn't grow up with the shame of his ancestor's loss influencing him. If anything, it sets up Kung Lao NOT being the main character.
I gotta agree. Why does NRS hate Kung Lao, I'll never know. I remember back when MK 2 came out, I though Kung Lao was the coolest guy, with the hat and the pose, he looked mysterious and badass.
I don't really hate it, but multiverse? Really? Killing Sindel in the first game of the reboot, making Bi Han a villain again, Kuai Liang being Scorpion, the Kameo system, getting rid of the three line intros and the constant use of the word timeline. Those are my gripes with the game.
the new intros look so bad, why are they wrestling... And why do they all sound so stiff... In MK11 it felt so smooth... And before that... "WHEN THERE S SMOKE, THERE S FIRE!"
You're right, avengers endgame blurred time travel and multiverse! Even though latter was specifically for allowing the former's gimmicks and conventions (alternate characters and settingsl)without the sometimes inevitable headaches that come along with the former! Who wrote this game? Because sure like hell not John Tobias who started his carrear doing comics!
@@MH-lr6uethat is true but it was kinda necessary here for MK1 but I think the mistake here is not having Kung also as Liu Kangs champion, making Kuai Liang Scorpion and Hanzo a child is brutal, I’m ok with everything else. I hate the injustice style intros, makes me appreciate MK11 a little bit more. Raiden is a bit boring as their champion, way too humble. They never established who’s their champion and who the story was centered around. The games were always centered on earthrealms champ. In majority of the previous games, Liu Kang was the focal point cuz he was the chosen one outside of MKX. With Liu now as an elder god, we have no champ to center the story on and it ends up centering back on Liu Kang at the end for the most part until they have us a Armageddon choose your fighter ending.
Story wise nothing matters, they already showed they can change everything at the drop of Kung Lao's hat. Instant gratification and no consequence, so why bother? Gameplay wise for me it's become to theatrical and it just takes me out of it. It was fun while it lasted.
It has no build up like NRS thought ppl would accept Kuai Liang as Shirai ryu leader and scorpion as if Hanzo never exist beside being trained by Smoke
Liu Kang screwed over his friends and enemies with his new timeline. Scorpion was changed into a little kid who has to watch his wife and clan go to his buddy, Baraka and his entire species got turned into an STD, Shang Tsung was stuck as that guy at the gas station who says he "just needs a couple bucks for gas" even though he doesn't have a car, and Bo Rai Cho went from an alcoholic to an old lady who runs a resturant, and Reptile finally got to have his species... who immediately decided to be racist to him.
Just give all the timelines to Geras, let there be one big, final battle and be done with it. I don't know what's worse, this or the Fast and Furious series.
When I saw all those characters at the end with all the weird designs, I thought we were going to get create a character. But nope didn't get anything.
I really loved how grounded the first half of the story felt. It was a nice break from all the time travel stuff we've had the past two games. And then they threw it all away for a "Everyone is Here" type ending
I honestly think the biggest issue with MK1 for me is the FACT it's a reboot. Part of the charm of fighting games is seeing how different characters stories evolve throughout the years. For example, seeing Ryu finally being at peace in SF6 after conquering the Satsui no Hado within him. Or my favorite, Kazuya and Jin's battle at the end of Tekken 8. That's a story we've seen built up all the way from Tekken 3, and seeing it finally happen is such a hype moment. Mortal Kombat can't do that because they've now rebooted the series AGAIN and have effectively lost the potential for a long term story conflict.
It’s the fact that it’s the same Lou Kang from the other timeline and he built a whole new timeline and he is the god of all realms that makes this game a sequel
I will never understand why they didn't just keep going with the Kombat kids, they could of introduced 3d era characters slowly and even redo deadly alliance and deception if they wanted or just do something fully new. Could of gonna 4 plus games before another reboot
"Just you vs your opponent in a fight to the death" You perfectly summarized my thoughts on this game. Kameos make MK1 look corny. It's almost like I'm watching a saturday morning cartoon version of MK. Haha, here's Janet Cage jumping in just to punch your opponent in the balls. Oh, look here's Jax flexing his muscles. It all looks lame in comparison to MKX and MK11.
@@blacksabbath9631 yea I can appreciate a comic relief from time to time, especially if being funny is imprinted in said character's DNA (Johnny Cage for example) but it looks too silly when a side character jumps in just to do something stupid. Maybe it's just me though, idk.
Everything we love is being ruined, one franchise at a time, by uncreative and lazy developers, directors, and writers. Anyone who says different is either coping or has repulsive taste
I'm realising that the industry is increasingly fueled by audiences that never approached media scrupulously to begin with. If you just want 'entertainment' or 'content' to fill the time, then the worst thing a work can be is 'not stimulating'. Lack of quality can only bother someone who is invested, i.e. someone who expects meaningful information and engages with art as the statement of a peer. If you're just sidling up to the sludge dispenser for your daily dose of dopamine then the worst thing you can get is a dud pill, in which case you just have another rummage in the bin and take another one until you get the happy juice.
I thought the Lin Kuei were supposed to be Chinese inspired and the Shirai Ryu, Japanese inspired. Hence their names being of Chinese (Bi-Han) and Japanese (Hanzo Hasashi). It’s weird that they all of a sudden made scorpion part of the Lin Kuei. There’d also be no reason to have a Hanzo as part of the Lin Kuei as well.
Funny side thing is depending on some of the origins for either a movie or comic they made it so that the shirai ryu used to be apart of the Lin kuei until they split and became their own thing. Then I guess the split became the shirai ryu and moved to Japan. How ever just making kuai Liang scorpion in everything from name to powers to making the shirai ryu to getting the woman who'd be Hanzo wife is freaking weird.
Its really funny to me how they managed to do the multiverse and yet play it as safe as humanly possible. Characters were barely changed at all, the same villains ended up being the villains, and the ending was a consequenceless mess. Honestly what was even the point?
All I wanted was a hanzo cameo where he is a successful shop owner with a big happy family and absolutely nothing happens he just sells the main cast some stuff and goes on with his life
I’m not gonna cap, my main issue is all this multiverse bullshit, like to me MK has always been the video game equivalent of picking up your action figures and smacking them together and I get wanting to modernize the storytelling but I think the issue is that X (which I really do like) is they got scared about having a next generation and probably considered marketability or whatever so they did the time travel stuff in 11 and purged the universe again so they could do one, but part of me wonders if they want to do one more reboot later on, that puts the world back to the very original games, because honestly writing wise, unless they stick with Liu’s universe forever (which I doubt) it’s just gonna be a vicious cycle. Basically outside of character writing I despise the writing from these past two games. And there’s also the implication that 11 and all of its lore inconsistencies are because Kronika keeps resetting the timeline on spam, so the characters from the past in that game are most definitely not the ones from 9, it’s all really annoying and terrible. Plus Multiverse Havik is the last villain I wanted to see for anything
In my opinion, the end of MK11 should've created ONE alternate timeline where Shang Tsungs body was gone, but his soul stayed intact. That could've been the influence that flipped the current Shang, and told him about everything Lui Kang changed to make his life suck. Current shang would then tell baraka, quan chi, etc...what lui did, and that would've been the catalyst that sparked the war. The kameos would've been from either timelines, with no repeats. (No sub, scorpion, or kung lao kameos) Also...there wouldve been only ONE Geras. I like the idea of him existing beyond the influence of anything. He simply IS.
What I mean by this is that you could tell this was going to be a good story. The first 1/4-1/2 of the story is actually pretty good. It has great pacing, decent acting, and a good story up to that point. Once it hit that halfway point you could tell they entered crunch time and just started rushing everything. I don’t think they had enough time to smooth out all the edges and actually make the game what they wanted it to be. Instead we got Invasions, this crappy Kameo system, color pallets for premium skins, and not much more. What I don’t like is how Netherrealm hasn’t added ANYTHING for us to do with this game. No living towers to get previous Invasions skins, no new game modes, nothing
@@alexallen126i swear this happens to the last couple mk games they put out. the first half is the best half of these games and then it just goes downhill.
@@mistermadmike488 I absolutely agree with you. Mk11 suffered the same fate. It would’ve been great if they had the time they needed because it honestly seems like MK11 should’ve had a much deeper tie in to MK1. It should’ve been a smoother transition from the ending of MK11 to the beginning of MK1. We saw The Great Kung Lao and the end and he was speculated to be Earthrealm’s new champion, yet he’s NOWHERE to be seen in MK1. Instead it’s a human Raiden. These are the things I have issues with as far as Netherrealm not giving us what was shown previously
@@Killer_Bee06 judging from the ending of MK11, I thought that’s what we were going to get for MK1. It was a pretty big disappointment for me (though it was made up for with Raiden being the champion now, I’m a Raiden main) I just want to know why the Kung Lao idea was presented to us, then scrapped for Raiden instead.
Imma be honest, I stopped playing because I feel like the cameo system just ruined everything. Without the cameo it feels like the characters only have one combo.
I think the thing that bothers me the most is that I actually like the first half of the story. The friendship between Kung Lao and Raiden is interesting, I love the dynamic Kenshi and Johnny have, I like Liu Kang, the restored Edenia group is interesting (I'm so happy to see Jerrod! ) and I even like the new Kuai Liang Scorpion! The team could easily have built a simpler, more traditional MK story about thwarting General Shao's attempt to overthrow Sindel. But no. We couldn't have that, so it's back to the Pyramid of Argus, and having literal god versions of every character show up and have to stabikise the fabric of reality. It's DULL! All I want is a big bombastic martial arts story with robots and monks and soldiers and sorcerers and stuff, like how Midway's games were. Thats all.
Just have to say it’s incredibly refreshing to see someone criticizing MK on RUclips and not going on about dumb stuff like the women being less sexy or representation being bad or the game betraying some rigid rulebook for the franchise. All you’re points were incredibly fair and understandable, and they were delivered in a way that made sense and didn’t try to pretend like this game is garbage, only outlined that it has faults. I was personally in love with this game for like it’s first 3/4ths of story, I thought the new backstories for characters were amazing and I especially loved what they did with Melina, her struggle with tarkat, and her relationship with Tanya. But the game did fail to stick the landing, and just came off as really rushed at the end. I enjoyed the more grounded approach at first, but I feel like that was abandoned in favor of going big for like no reason. Again dope video, and thank you for putting into words so many opinions I held about this game. (Also, I noticed that very funny image of Shang Tsung smiling in the video, and I just think a stretched out version of that would be a very funny and fitting thumbnail, only a suggestion tho :))
All three (MK1, SF6 and Tekken) have AGGRESSIVE amounts of microtransactions but SF6 is the one I keep coming back to time and time again :) Can't wait for Bison and Terry!
Considering this is Mortal Kombat 1, removing Kano and Sonya is a sin, in my opinion. With free range to give characters new stories and tweaking their identities, those two should've been given that honor, since they were part of the actual first Mortal Kombat game - they are certified OGs and needed to be respected and represented as such.
I don't necessarily disagree. Only reason I'm even flexible on it in the first place is because they had such a huge presence in the last three games. Not having them in the DLC, however, is a crime.
If you do a big ol' reset of the universe you have to be bold and do different and risky stuff in it. MK1 played it as safe as humanly possible to the point of it being boring. The worst part of it is that there were so many opportunities to do something fresh. But instead of doing that they were like "eeey let's switch sub zero and scorpion" or "let's do this or that character from ground up" only for him/her to turn out exactly like before. The word that comes to mind first is "uninspired".
I’m so glad someone is talking about the strong sway away from dark & serious tones/themes. Really changed the identity of the content. Not saying this type of game can’t exist… the feely good, overly colored, nonsense.. but just do it with media that’s meant to be that way. INJUSTICE NOT MK
It’s clear new MK is just meant for kids. Convince me the story is not. Sad our millions of dollars couldn’t be used for an actual intricate or interesting story.. just same thing all the time. Bad guys get started, good guys show up, bad guys lose.
Your section about the Avengers reminded me of the Justice League movie shortcoming. Half of the League was introduced in the movie. It was harder to get attached to them as a result.
my running theory about scorpion being kuai liang was that liu kang wanted to give hanzo a break from the torture and hell he's been going through in every timeline of losing his family and his clan. so to make things easier he left bi han as subzero and gave the scorpion mantel to kuai liang to separate the brothers more and keep hanzo hasashi's family and life intact. i forget what clash it is but one of the intros with scorpion mentions that hanzo is a natural in the shirai ryu, so he might take the mantel as scorpion later. either way, i like that hanzo didn't just instantly lose his family in this timeline.
He doesn't, instead he looses everything else that should be his, IE his wife, potential son, the clan he was already leader of, his adopted son takeda and his powers. Him being raised by kuai liang to boot almost feels like some wonky time manipulation NTR plot some one thought up while high and working one handed because they had some suss stuff playing on a side screen next to their work screen. Heck if lui kang wanted to give Hanzo a break he didn't have to set things up to give Hanzo the perfect villain origin story if he ever finds out that Kuai liang has everything that's supposed to be his and that was his in a past time line. Plus it's messed up that MK11 killed older wiser Hanzo would Kuai liang was brotherly with. Just to add back a younger scorpion still at odds with the shirai ryu. None of these story beats make any sense and just serve to further push Hanzo back towards being the vengeful scorpion again
@@dennismoose2152 what? My point was that you don't need to know all the characters endings to understand what's happening. Not whatever you think I said.
I’m convinced this game is the result of what would have been Injustice 3 getting hijacked by the suits at Warner Bros. That would explain the Kameos being the planned sidekick mechanic, Umgadis being like the Amazons, Shao looking like Steppenwolf, and Kauai Liang Scorpion being Nightwing as opposed to normal Robin. The multiverse aspect was probably WB’s response to Spiderverse and Disney post Engame and the titans being an in-lore explanation to the new skins. Maybe I’m inhaling lethal amounts of copium but that’s the most likely reason why MK1 had a messy story and is the Halo Infinite of 9th gen fighters.
When I saw the full story of MK1, at the first half I was like "Ok I kinda like these new versions of the classic characters!" untill the Evil Sindel Fight happened. From that point on I was feeling like I was watching EndGame all over again.
Great video! 1 thing though...the character you choose to play as in the end ISN'T a character from Liu's time line. It is a random titan that was brought in. No normal human could ever fight a titan version of the deadly alliance.
great video? dude just recycled , and repeated everything all the haters of mk1 have been saying for the last 6 months, nothing new but great video? lol sheep
@@NoNonsenseSpider I think you are confused. The tower endings are what happens to said characters in Liu Kang's universe after the story, NOT what happens after THEY kill Shang Tsung. I guess it could be confusing as Shang is the boss of the tower, but yeah, the tower and the story mode/ending are somewhat separate. it's different than what happened in mk11, where every character had an ending where they became a time titan. That is, unless you want to believe that each MK1 ending is leading into it's own timeline / universe.
I feel like Scorpion being Lin Kuei isn’t a bad idea but how they did it was just terrible Me personally I would’ve gone with: Sub zero (Bi-Han) Tundra (Kuai Liang) Scorpion (Hanzo in like his 20s) Smoke (can stay the same except his move set is less teleporting and other smoke player BS) Cyrax and Sektor (this time, they stay human) And if they throw in cyber ninjas, make it more human than robot

It genuinely pisses me off at how bad this game turned out because you can TELL there SOME people who kinda care about the game and the gameplay and story are almost as good as mkx which is peak mk. I hate seeing people dislike mk. I hate seeing mk fail. I HATE DISLIKING MK. I don’t want mk1 to fail because there IS potential. Put in extra content, have more transparency with us and fix the current meta and we are good to go. It’s not THAT far from fixing this. Also, fuck you wb
exactly how i feel. it sucks because mk11 is the only truly enjoyable mk i can play on modern systems (not a big fan of mkx) and even though i absolutely love mk11 i've completely exhausted the game & as a result i just can't fulfill the crave for playing mk w/ any other game in the series to the same level. if mk1 had focused on solo fights there'd be a lot more combo variety per character, which is seriously lacking in its current state and will likely never be fixed due to combos being fully reliant on kameo extensions. the game could've been immensely improved from what wb rushed it to be if NRS was given the time to develop more content and possibly could've made a better ending. unbelievably disappointing
My favorite moment in MK11 is when Raiden realizes he has killed Liu Kang over and over again, just like he was about to. It even showed flashbacks, some that were kinda bent to the narrative, some were straight up fights that happened in previous games. I still watch that cutscene on RUclips sometimes. There was nothing multiversal about it, it was just an (albeit magical) glimpse at time and perpetuated violence. It was good, I loved it. The multiverse thing just kinda snuffs out what lessons you could wrestle out of that story.
it’s certainly sold better than all competitors but nobody respects it; Mortal Kombat has zero prestige and it won’t gain any prestige until a much better sequel drops
Great video. Love your clear enthusiasm for the games and how it feels like it's just a guy who loves the games and is telling us how he feels. Good I'm subbing whether you drop more like this vid or not
I don't like that the entire base roster is pretty much either good guys or people who have done wrong trying to do right. Save for Shao Kahn, Shang and Reiko, of course. Reptile is a former henchman trying to right his wrongs. Ashrah is a former henchman trying to right her wrongs. They made Rain a former henchman trying to right his wrongs in post-game dialogue. They made Mileena a hero in order to right her wrongs of a previous timeline. They made Baraka a hero to right his wrongs of a previous timeline. They made Sindel a hero to right her wrongs in a previous timeline. They made Tanya a hero to right her wrongs of a previous timeline. Call me annoying if you want, but that doesn't change the roster. They even made Havik, whose entire thing is the spreading of Chaos and destruction a hero. He's a villain on the roster, sure, but they couldn't even give him bad intentions, he wants a free Seido because Seido sucks. I feel like everybody now just forgets that villains are allowed to exist and be more than just drooling savages like Reiko and Shao. Even Bi-Han has been reduced to pretty much a honorless savage obsessed with power
Great vid! I haven't played any MK game outside of the original trilogy, but I always find fighting game stories to be extremely interesting (Street Fighter, Tekken, etc.). Se seeing a breakdown of the story/characters first and the gameplay as an afterthought was really interesting!

Liu Kang really said " Y'know what, Hanzo I'm gonna take everything you had and give it to Kuwai Liang, in fact, I'm going to kill your parents so you grow up alone as an orphan too while I'm at it"
To be fair to Liu Kang- in Scorpion's MK11 ending, he tried to give himself a happy ended billions of times and it never once worked out.

Why reset the timeline if nothing changes! All the characters become the same version of old self!

Liu Kang screwed over his friends and enemies with his new timeline.
Yeah. Another risk they run with rebooting this universe over and over again.

(No sub, scorpion, or kung lao kameos)
Also...there wouldve been only ONE Geras.

Khaos reign is the prime example of how much this multiverse thing should stop and quickly!
There is a reason the greatest MK games are the ones that didn’t have DLC content or any type of “reboot”
Yeah what happened to Mileena eating people’s guts?
@13:33 I LOLED hard! You're second Chris Tucker for me with your voice XD
the way he sounds so concerned is literally so funny to me😭😭
Great vid! I haven't played any MK game outside of the original trilogy, but I always find fighting game stories to be extremely interesting (Street Fighter, Tekken, etc.). Se seeing a breakdown of the story/characters first and the gameplay as an afterthought was really interesting!
