The idea of multiverses creates a cop out for retcons. That means you can't have stakes even with a universe you care about since it can just be handwaved away then replaced.
No timeline matters if they can just pull another one where everything is basically the same.

It feels like it makes more sense in injustice with sidekicks and stuff, I’d rather it just stick to an MKX format with 3 bars, keep the fatal blows and maybe add in the wagers and stage transitions.

I've been waiting for someone to point out how ludicrous the "more than two timelines" thing is. Not only did they break their own rules about there being only 1 timeline before mk11 aftermath's ending, they made kronika look like a chump because apparently anyone can beat the og titan of time, nothing to it

@@FatalxKong the only reason Liu Kang or shang tsung beat kronika was with the fused souls of Raiden to Liu or shang (or raiden and fujin in shang's case). Also, prior to mk1, there was only 1 timeline. Having Liu and shang's timelines is fine, but pulling infinite timelines out of nowhere without explanation is what baffles me

There was only 1 timeline, and the last fight in aftermath caused the split, so that's how we got Liu and shang's timelines. I'm fine with the idea of other timelines, but they need a better explanation than "because they do"

Dude just gets tamed for shao kahn despite being the strongest character (besides the elder gods and the titans and the one being) and straight up needed the entire cast including heroes and villains to defeat him. Armageddon and the deadly alliance are wasted, and the teaser is supposed to be just a titan version of havik.

I feel like the sheer disrespect done to Kung Lao by the Netherrealm can never be understated. ESPECIALLY in this game. After mk11 it was foreshadowed that Kung Lao would be earthrealm's champion in the next game. Yet HERE WE ARE with Raiden, a character that (IMO) should NOT have been shown in this game. The focus for the obligatory "main character" should have solely been on Kung Lao. He could have been arrogant at first, but been given a character arc where he accepts his role as the champion of earthrealm, not only providing a good story arc but also giving a beloved character the proper respect he was so desperately in need of after the last reboot.
I feel robbed and idgaf about the dlc hyped characters they milk . game was trash and they disrespected the 3D trilogy . The dumb ass multiverse and fighting clones again is crazy . Couple of my franchises I gave up on . The game has 0 fucking content and invasion is the worse game mode I ever seen in mk. Feels like tideous tutorials . The forced team combos was terrible and not adding tag team was insanity . They slaughtered everything by the middle / end of story . Shits a joke . The 8hr story was. Good 1st half then became complete fucking trash. Worst ending / final boss I ever seen to .. most the cut scenes fights are basic ass hand to hand kicks n punches 😂 I will not buy another mk and not buy the 40$ dlc they’ll probably pop out there ass for this game. Multiverse shit is so played out and basically did that in mk11

It all looks lame in comparison to MKX and MK11.

Story wise nothing matters, they already showed they can change everything at the drop of Kung Lao's hat. Instant gratification and no consequence, so why bother? Gameplay wise for me it's become to theatrical and it just takes me out of it. It was fun while it lasted.

What I mean by this is that you could tell this was going to be a good story. The first 1/4-1/2 of the story is actually pretty good. It has great pacing, decent acting, and a good story up to that point. Once it hit that halfway point you could tell they entered crunch time and just started rushing everything. I don’t think they had enough time to smooth out all the edges and actually make the game what they wanted it to be. Instead we got Invasions, this crappy Kameo system, color pallets for premium skins, and not much more. What I don’t like is how Netherrealm hasn’t added ANYTHING for us to do with this game. No living towers to get previous Invasions skins, no new game modes, nothing

I’m not gonna cap, my main issue is all this multiverse bullshit, like to me MK has always been the video game equivalent of picking up your action figures and smacking them together and I get wanting to modernize the storytelling but I think the issue is that X (which I really do like) is they got scared about having a next generation and probably considered marketability or whatever so they did the time travel stuff in 11 and purged the universe again so they could do one, but part of me wonders if they want to do one more reboot later on, that puts the world back to the very original games, because honestly writing wise, unless they stick with Liu’s universe forever (which I doubt) it’s just gonna be a vicious cycle.
Basically outside of character writing I despise the writing from these past two games. And there’s also the implication that 11 and all of its lore inconsistencies are because Kronika keeps resetting the timeline on spam, so the characters from the past in that game are most definitely not the ones from 9, it’s all really annoying and terrible. Plus Multiverse Havik is the last villain I wanted to see for anything

I thought the Lin Kuei were supposed to be Chinese inspired and the Shirai Ryu, Japanese inspired. Hence their names being of Chinese (Bi-Han) and Japanese (Hanzo Hasashi). It’s weird that they all of a sudden made scorpion part of the Lin Kuei. There’d also be no reason to have a Hanzo as part of the Lin Kuei as well.
Funny side thing is depending on some of the origins for either a movie or comic they made it so that the shirai ryu used to be apart of the Lin kuei until they split and became their own thing. Then I guess the split became the shirai ryu and moved to Japan.
How ever just making kuai Liang scorpion in everything from name to powers to making the shirai ryu to getting the woman who'd be Hanzo wife is freaking weird.

All three (MK1, SF6 and Tekken) have AGGRESSIVE amounts of microtransactions but SF6 is the one I keep coming back to time and time again :) Can't wait for Bison and Terry!
In my opinion, the end of MK11 should've created ONE alternate timeline where Shang Tsungs body was gone, but his soul stayed intact.
That could've been the influence that flipped the current Shang, and told him about everything Lui Kang changed to make his life suck. Current shang would then tell baraka, quan chi, etc...what lui did, and that would've been the catalyst that sparked the war.
The kameos would've been from either timelines, with no repeats. (No sub, scorpion, or kung lao kameos)
Also...there wouldve been only ONE Geras. I like the idea of him existing beyond the influence of anything. He simply IS.

I have to disagree with your rant about the Armageddon. While, yes the original armageddon was built up over the span of many games, this new one being built up over the span of one game doesn't erase the original. All of it is still part of the same overarching story. To me, putting armageddon first in the story means that the thing that will have all the build up later on will be that much more impactful. To compare it to the MCU again, it'd be like if the timeline was reset and the Avengers defeated Thanos as easily as they defeated Loki, but eventually they'd top that with the Avengers fighting someone who controls the multiverse. The armageddon in this timeline could be more meaningless to give greater meaning to the more impactful events later on.

my running theory about scorpion being kuai liang was that liu kang wanted to give hanzo a break from the torture and hell he's been going through in every timeline of losing his family and his clan. so to make things easier he left bi han as subzero and gave the scorpion mantel to kuai liang to separate the brothers more and keep hanzo hasashi's family and life intact.
i forget what clash it is but one of the intros with scorpion mentions that hanzo is a natural in the shirai ryu, so he might take the mantel as scorpion later. either way, i like that hanzo didn't just instantly lose his family in this timeline.
He doesn't, instead he looses everything else that should be his, IE his wife, potential son, the clan he was already leader of, his adopted son takeda and his powers.
Him being raised by kuai liang to boot almost feels like some wonky time manipulation NTR plot some one thought up while high and working one handed because they had some suss stuff playing on a side screen next to their work screen.
Heck if lui kang wanted to give Hanzo a break he didn't have to set things up to give Hanzo the perfect villain origin story if he ever finds out that Kuai liang has everything that's supposed to be his and that was his in a past time line.
Plus it's messed up that MK11 killed older wiser Hanzo would Kuai liang was brotherly with. Just to add back a younger scorpion still at odds with the shirai ryu. None of these story beats make any sense and just serve to further push Hanzo back towards being the vengeful scorpion again
I legitimately loved the story of MK1 (the second) and thought it was one of the best stories told in the whole series........up until they introduced the multi-verse. I just felt like all the characters they've spent the entire game building up and fleshing out just got shat on. Once characters from the alternate timeline showed up, character moments became more awkward between the main characters and villains. As stated in the video, what would MK1 Mileena say to MK11 Dark Raiden? Even the moments between Evil Sindel and Mileena felt boring and empty. It gets even worse when everyone but Liu Kang disappear from the ending of the game. He literally recruits random people we've never met from other worlds to fight the main villain and to resolve the ending.
While I wasn't excited, I was also on board to find out that both endings of MK11: Aftermath were canon. Honestly, the story was still pretty well written with this plot twist in mind. What really pissed me off was how they had the opportunity to start from the beginning with stakes at an all-time low without making the audience think it's unimportant. The biggest thing we had to worry about was the tension between Outworld and Earthrealm with Queen Sindel possibly getting tricked into going to war. This was a genuinely interesting plot that I cared about. Instead, it got quickly wrapped up to then decided to discuss alternate timelines and such. Netherrealm disappointingly decided to raise the stakes to an unfathomably high level for no reason at all.
It’s time for this series to move on from Fighting game to third person Arkham style action game
I feel like if they would’ve left the “Shang Tsung, General Shao, and Quan Chi betray Queen Sindel” as is in this game, it would have been a lot better, and set the Titan Shang Tsing for the next game or something (Not the whole Armageddon bs). It would’ve made the story a lot better because they already focused us in on all our main characters, why are we being introduced to older characters as the finale of the game?
For Scorpion, do you remember this is a new timeline? Hanzo is never mentioned as Scorpion in the story. He was never killed and his family never died. He and Kuai Liang never even meet until after the events of the story where Hanzo is a teenage boy

Me personally I would’ve gone with:
Sub zero (Bi-Han)
Tundra (Kuai Liang)
Scorpion (Hanzo in like his 20s)
Smoke (can stay the same except his move set is less teleporting and other smoke player BS)
Cyrax and Sektor (this time, they stay human)
And if they throw in cyber ninjas, make it more human than robot

Here’s how I would have personally changed stuff :
- Make Sarreena the demonic side of Ashra, sharing the same body and switching back and forth during battle. That way she and Reptile have even more in common.
- Have Hanzo as the adopted brother instead of Smoke, and that it was the Lin Kuei who killed his family when he was a child. Smoke will have to decide between his bloodline (Bi-Han) or his principles (Hanzo). Plus, making Smoke and Sub-Zero true brothers would be a nod to their past friendship in previous games.
- Kano being either Cyrax or Sector. Make him a cyborg and the other one (depending on which one is Kano) into a full robot.
- Sonya is a cop and Striker is her brother who was killed by Kano, or the other way around.
- Bring back Havik’s old look.
- Motaro as a boss.
- Remove all that time travel/multiverse stuff, I don’t like it.
Yeah from a storytelling perspective MK1 story mode would be perfect if it wasn't for the ending. I wish MK1 has a smaller contained story with smaller stakes but no it had to go out of its way to have a "bombastic ending that is bigger than ever before!". Here's hoping that MK2/MK13 has a more contained and concise storyline and no more timeline multiverse bullshit.
I think u were really over thinking the ending chapter being call Armageddon. It was just a callback word to a previous game and the pyramid being in that inbetween worlds space, it wasnt meant to be an actual new "Armageddon", it was just called that as a throwback because all the characters were involved similar to the game Armageddon's concept, but there was no last man standing element in this one or anything like that. You way overthought it.
Or they just used all the dressings from Armageddon with no real thought behind it other than "'member"

I still Dislike the fact that they hyped up the Kung Lao ending in Liu Kang’s tower on MK11, but somehow he’s still a second fiddle and we never get a change to see his ancestor “The Great Kung Lao” big gap in the story ….
my biggest problem with the mk1 story is the infinite or near infinite time lines. Liu Kang and Shang Tsung were the only ones fighting over the crown in the end of mk11. everyone else was gone.
so, if there are infinite timelines where anyone can be keeper of time, that means there had to have been infinite timelines before mk1 as well. otherwise it makes zero sense that anyone other than Liu or Shang could've had the crown.

The whole multiverse angle at the end felt so rushed and just not needed. That’s what really took me away from the campaign as a whole.
There is no accepting Kuai Liang and Hanzo’s switcharoo. Kuai Liang IS Sub-Zero. He’s more Sub-Zero than Bi-Han.

Great Video. You did a damn good job with explaining the ending. That ending really was that bad konsidering the rest of the story ( aside from Scorpion ) was fine. My favourite karachter is Baraka. But despite his new role as a good guy, it karries little weight.

something that bothers me is that each of the titans are suppose to be even more powerfull than the elden gods combined yet they can be defeated by regular character like johnny cage, kung lao, scorpion, etc..., like it dosnt feel like we are fighting a titan at all in the final fight.
There is a reason the greatest MK games are the ones that didn’t have DLC content or any type of “reboot”
They should let this universe plays out first before shoving the Multiverse stuff into it, or else nothing feels like it matters.
I'm glad to know it wasn't just me! I've only played 3 of the more current ones and found myself extremely confused over which came before the other, the character switches and story 😵💫

Great vid! I haven't played any MK game outside of the original trilogy, but I always find fighting game stories to be extremely interesting (Street Fighter, Tekken, etc.). Se seeing a breakdown of the story/characters first and the gameplay as an afterthought was really interesting!
Great video! 1 thing though...the character you choose to play as in the end ISN'T a character from Liu's time line. It is a random titan that was brought in. No normal human could ever fight a titan version of the deadly alliance.
If you choose Kuai Liang, he's from Liu Kang's timeline

That is unfortunately false since in the tower endings such as Raiden’s he stated how he WAS at that battle saying that he saw his God counterpart
@@NoNonsenseSpider I think you are confused. The tower endings are what happens to said characters in Liu Kang's universe after the story, NOT what happens after THEY kill Shang Tsung. I guess it could be confusing as Shang is the boss of the tower, but yeah, the tower and the story mode/ending are somewhat separate.
it's different than what happened in mk11, where every character had an ending where they became a time titan. That is, unless you want to believe that each MK1 ending is leading into it's own timeline / universe.

I absolutely hate what they did with scorpion not to mention before the game came out they made it seem like the story mode would be unique and unpredictable but it was literally the most predictable story that you could have imagined
