- Mortal Kombat 9 Explained takes you through the whole ninth entry in the popular fighting game franchise. While Midway was having money problems, Warner Brothers (owner of DC Comics) swooped in and acquired many of the company’s IPs, including #mortalkombat With Ed Boon back as creative director of the new studio, Netherealm, Mortal Kombat was revived with a whole new look, style, gameplay and more!

Neatherealm really poured so much effort and love for MK9, the final product was an astounding leap forward for the franchise.
As a kid, everyone i knew played Mortal Kombat, but i was the only one who actually loved and learned the story. MK9 gave me my dream of seeing those first 3 games stories come to life, with a dark bloody twist added to it. 9 will always be my favorite for that reason.

The overall presentation, roster, character designs, story mode and gameplay from this MK are still the best, in my opinion.

As this is the last one to have that 2v2 tag team couch coop feature it’s definitely waaaay up there for me. Super depressing that’s no longer a feature nowadays. I had so many fun game nights with friends with that.

MK vs DC was the first Mortal Kombat game I ever owned, but it eventually lead to me getting this masterpiece. Perfect roster, some of the best designs the characters have ever had, incredibly fun gameplay, fatalities that still hold up, and a story mode that was finally able to tell the story of the first 3 games (albeit with various changes throughout) without just using bios and character endings. My brother and I still quote this game's story mode to this vary day. MK vs DC may have been what introduced me to Mortal Kombat, but MK 9 was what made me fall in love with Mortal Kombat and encouraged me to go back and check out the older games, learn the lore, and stick around for the next installments. MK 9 isn't only my favorite Mortal Kombat game, but my favorite fighting game ever. This game has a special place in my heart and I would love if we got some kind of a remaster for it some time in the future.

It's a minor thing, but I wouldve liked a mention of the costumes, and how detailed and lore heavy some of them were. Especially Dark Raiden, Old and Young Shang Tsung, both Bi-Han and Kuai Liang Sub-Zero, and being able to play as human and cyborg Cyrax and Sektor. The latter completely blew my mind on first playthrough...
Agreed, so I made sure to talk about some of the extra costumes in MKX and MK11 🙂
While I think this game has some pretty horrible examples of story writing in MK, it has hands down the best gameplay, and one of the best rosters and aesthetics in any MK game.

@@Smokey1419 The Sindel kills everyone fight was one of the sloppiest pieces of writing they've ever done. Everyone goes in one by one, no weapons, no powers, and watches their allies get brutally murdered lol. Not to forget Shao Kahn literally telling Kitana her entire backstory for no reason, Mileena's dumb retcon, pointless filler fights like Jax vs Johnny, characters being jobbers after or before their chapters, and so much more. There are some good moments though, like the Kitana and Liu Kang first meet scene, but other than that, the story overall is kinda sloppily written. At least they improved with MKX and Injustice 2 though, hands down.
@@nah4858 Whike i hated the Sindel scene (rip Sub Zero) to me it felt like it did what it needed, it established Sindel as op having taken on Shang Tsungs powers, you can chalk up the one at a time as kombat honor, but yea they shouldve rushed her.
Shao at that point had no more use for Kitana, and woukd actually take pleasure in krushing Kitana's spurit with what really happened. We all hate that some of our favorites get jobbed out, but not everyone can win, i dont need Reptile to have a14-2 overall record. plus imagine having to write a 2-3 hour cohesive story eith all the characters MK has. For what it was, i appreciate that story way more than X, Just my opinion
@@Smokey1419 I respect it but my point is that while you can come up with different reasons for them doing what they did, it overall is just pretty sloppy and could've been done better with some more thought put into it.
Holy shit, they really made it possibly lote accurate for Kratos to have actually gone to the MK universe, cause thats basically what the story after GOW 3 is, hes just wandering the realms, and just so happened to end up in the Norse realm in canon

Thanks so much my friend! I definitely want to do Injustice, I’m currently going through all of the DC games alongside Mortal Kombat. So far I’ve done all the Batman games pre-Arkham Asylum, eventually I’ll get up to Injustice 1&2 and get the rest of the DC games completed before Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad next year 😃
Man, I loved this game on the PS vita. It was so awesome to get the full experience on the go.
For as many flaws MK9 had telling its story and the many comprises it made in service of telling a much more streamlined narrative. It still holds a special place in me
That said. Kitana, Jade, Skarlet, and Mileena looked so pretty in this one, which really wasn't continued in the sequels. :)
Yeah, it's a real shame NRS has stopped making them look like they've always had. I really like how they look in here too, although their Deception outfits does still give them a run for their money. :P

The only thing I hated about 9 was how overpowered Shao Khan was even on the easiest difficulty he spammed that hammer so damn much. The rest of it was fun though and I do miss it. Especially since for whatever reason fighting games don’t have battle damage which was such a cool feature.
Yeah I agree, Shao Kahn loves to spam the hammer throw and spears 😄

I would classify mortal kombat games as comedy. It's like a satire of hyper violence. 9 and prior at least, now theyre serious stories with emotion and the comedy is pretty much only johnny cage.

This game needs to come back to digital or remastered with the newer engine but the same as it was.
So, are there 4 timelines? Midway timeline, DCvsMK timeline, Netherrealm timeline and mk1reboot timeline. Or are there any other?
DC VS MK takes place after MK3 lore wise(It's after Shao kahn's Invasion)

I was really expecting you to mention how the game got remove from the Steam store and why. For a MK entry this successful, that was surely quite an important and disappointing event.
Yeah I heard it was removed from steam, not sure why though. You can still play it if you can find a physical PC version
or a cracked version.
Mk 9 was my first real mk game i remember playing this day and night on my old psvita
Great game, i played the demo on ps3 so much, then got the game and it was amazing, probably hundreds of hours into it. It was the mortal Komeback we needed after DC universe
I forgot all about Kratos being a guest character for MK9! I didnt play MK5-MK10 and started playing again with MK11. They should def bring new Kratos with the axe for MK1!
I miss the midway era yes these new games look and play nice but they don't feel like mk anymore mk9 was the last to have an actual mk tournament the rest is just realm wars,it's even more said when you realize the story was supposed to actually continue with taven after Armageddon
The original timeline also stopped doing tournaments after MK2 and became all about realm wars.
This game Kould use a Remaster
It definitely deserves a remaster, they could’ve done a HD remaster and included it with MK1 as a deluxe bonus. Like Ubisoft did with Far Cry 3 and Infinity Ward did with Call of Duty 4

I bought this game for the Xbox 360 in 2013 and was the first fighting game I’d bought since Deception and got me back into fighting games as since 1992 when I got Street Fighter 2 World Warrior (and Turbo the following year) I loved fighting games as I had done Taekwondo since the age of 5 and in my 20’s started doing BJJ tournaments and MMA fights (Kate Jackson of Bellator and did Ultimate Fighter trained with me at Koncept Gym in Newquay, Cornwall). But from MK2 I started to prefer the Mortal Kombat franchise as Street Fighter was my favourite as it was better than the original Mortal Kombat game (I had a SNES and the first game was censored) but for years they just kept doing SF2 updates and there was no Street Fighter 3 (though Alpha came next) where as Mortal Kombat games kept on moving on. After 8yrs of no fighting games MK9 got me back into fighting games and I especially loved the story mode, Mortal Kombat has the best fighting game lore and story modes much better than Street Fighter 5 & 6 and King Of The Fighters 15 and can’t wait to see Mortal Kombat One’s story mode
You’ve got a solid history with martial arts, I did some Taekwondo myself, and still follow the five tenets in my daily life. I agree that MK has the most enjoyable lore over the other fighting games
@@DonCritic I had a Korean master who was an 8th dan black belt (WTF not ITF Taekwondo only WTF is in the Olympics) and was the only person in Plymouth (England) at the time who taught Taekwondo and when he got hurt in a bad car crash he brought teachers over from Korea. He would make us talk in Korean and was very strict with fitness and I would got 4-5 times a week, I know this as my mum brought it up recently but when I was about 8 she took me to the doctors with a suspected appendicitis and the couldn’t feel nothing because of the hard muscles I had there saying to my parents “what have you done to this child I cannot feel nothing”. Same time summer 1989 when I was 8 we went to stay with my mum’s brother who lives in Florida and my cousins were shocked as I looked like a little Bruce Lee as I remember being called and I always remember my cousin got his friend and told he to tense my muscles (upper body, I didn’t have massive biceps as I looked like a mini Bruce Lee) and his friend said “wow! I’ve got to go tell my grandma” 😂

It's my favorite Mortal Kombat game of all time. Not only was it my first true introduction to the series (not counting MK vs. DC since that was a proto-Injustice rather than a Mortal Kombat game) since high school but it overall captured what made the original arcade trilogy so great in the 1st place while reinventing itself to what the series is to this day. Too bad Kitana's face is so fucking ugly in that game.🐉🔥💀

Anyone else remember Chip (Jim) in the Cable Guy mentioning playing MK with a friend in Viet Nam? I kinda got that, mostly got pain and annoyed. I have a PS3 so I also had to contend with Kratos fanboys. Probably the most toxic fighting game I have ever played. It did finally make Kano Austrailian. RIP Trevor Goddard.

Yeah Sareena, Frost, Daegon, Reiko and Kenshi can appear in the Pit stage
What made this game great:
1. Amazing roster (the best IMO)
2. Engaging story
3. Great balance of nostalgia and new elements
4. Graphics were great without being TOO realistic (yes, too much realism can be bad)
5. Klassic skins
6. Xray moves
7. Lots of modes
8. A lot of unlockable skins without being TOO much (sometimes less is more)
9. Last, but not least: it was fun as hell
And as a side note, I became super happy when this became backward compatible for XB1 and Series X. It let me replay it on a current gen console without having to unlock everything all over again, haha.
Still my all time favorite MK, I remember my teachers asking if everything was ok because I was shaking with excitement all day on release day and the only thing I wanted was to get back home and finally play this masterpiece. The new games are still great but the feeling I got from this MK will always be my favorite memory of my childhood

This game is just fantastic. It plays wonderfully, the characters look great, and the story revolutionized the whole fighting game genre. Absolute masterpiece.

@@Ertto54 the sindel massacre, the power scaling, shao kahn was cool in the intro, however became a moron later on, the mk3 portion was lackluster, mainly because it shouldve been a seperate game. There is so mich interesting stuff in mk3, it wouldn't fit. And the portion itself is unmemorable. And so much more.

@ladmarianondrugs not sure what planet you was on but all I saw with mk11 was one of the most highly polished fighting games ever published haha , yeah stories may not be fantastic but they certainly could be worse and what makes it even more tolerable is the fantastic voice performances that the cast gave

Yeah when he battles Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, I also forgot to mention the Shaolin Monks references in the challenge mode. There’s just so many references to the previous games in MK9 haha 😂 Also a Smash Bros Explained Series sounds like great fun! And I’d definitely love to cover that in the future
This game has my favorite outfits in any MK game for me. I also believe it’s the most time I put in a MK game. (Also DUCK that challenge where you need to kill 3 Shaos with Striker.)

Amazing game
One of the best games would be incredible if it had a story mode with the dragon Onaga being the villain Along with the adaptation of Mythologies Sub Zero and having others characters that appear in the story And sometimes in the background of fights and also in the game history but are not usable and only appear as a reference And Easter eggs and their names are mentioned a few times they are:
Kenshi,Rain,Skarlet,Cyber Smoke,Havik,Reiko,2 Khameleon,Tanya,Frost,Sareena,Nitara And finally Li Mei All of these characters are in the game in the story but are not used and playable,as well as the bosses Shao Khan,Kintaro,Motaro and Goro
It's really a shame and a pain in my heart but the game is incredible and very good Being the best of all at the time and even today,he made the childhood of many,I just missed these characters and the extra story dlc with Onaga the main villain With all these extra characters Our hero characters getting to know each one of them in a story dlc It's a shame it didn't happen and will never happen... 🥺🤧😔 like and Bye!

My favourite non-arcade part of the series. It did everything right, that MK game should do: mechanics, roster, movesets, stages, fatalities etc. Although a story is a bit weaker than at the original timeline, but thats maybe just my nitpicking.
