He can't do that live anymore, but I'll tell you that YES he used to be able to. I saw him do it twice in 01-02. The whole damn thing. I recall him staggering around for a few seconds afterwards.
The scream is symbolic of him letting his grudges go & expelling it sometimes literally in the form of vomit but Maynard was & still is a very good athlete. He ran cross country, wrestled, and has a MMA studio. Not to mention he was in the Army & graduated from West Point to give u some insight on how he was able to scream for 25 seconds
Most of them are just "oh powerful scream" *few seconds later* "ok I'm gonna go back to headbanging cause the scream won't go for that long" *slow realization of what's happening*
Best. Rock. Scream. EVER🤘 Especially given the placement and meaning of it in this song. Talk about truly being able to listen to this and "let go". Amazing
100%...knowing the grudges that man was expelling in the making of this. Then followed by the "let go, let go, let go" chant after is goosebumps EVERYTIME for me. I also heard he threw up in studio recording it.
If you reeeaaaaly listen to the scream, it’s 29 seconds. Which is equivalent to the Saturn Return which depicts the time period one goes through to mature. His scream is the interpretation of those years passing.
I recently realized, after jamming to this for like 10 years, Maynard is being comical. Comedy is important to him and it's all over his work. From the costumes he wears, to the hidden lyrics in his songs, to the Puscifer Videos. Here, he has written lyrics all about letting go of your grudges so you can be happy and reach your full potential. But at the end, it's still there. GRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGE!!!
Tool are a very, very special band. They are awesome and irreplaceable. They're not young any more, and I'm almost scared that they won't release any more music.
The Andy and Alex one at 9:00 was my favorite, they were just sitting there rocking out and then slowly, steadily, began to still, both of their faces filling with first confusion, then disbelief, then awe. Yup yup yup, Maynard will do that.
Yeah this is great. I know you're like me with a video like this, I search "Tool Reaction" like 3x a day! I think any of the cool breakdowns would be good next, like the one in the middle of Jambi or even in this song i think there is a cool one.
I've always enjoyed your Tool compilations, but this one blows the others away. I mean that in a good way. Waiting to see what you come up with next.✌🤘🤘
I will always remember the first time I heard it. A friend of mine told to try Tool, so I did. I love listening music in my bed before sleeping. One evening I went to bed, put my headphone and launched Lateralus. First of all, long before I got to this scream, I was really into the music, I thought it was excellent and I was enjoying it. And then the scream came, I remember being lifted up. I remember the room, I remember there was still a bit of sun, I remember that moment very well. A musical slap in the face.
That is such a formidable way to start a video related to tool I mean this song has six different parts to die for. The opening The whispering Build up / Drop Relieve / Bridge (Not known) (Not known)
I've seen Tool 14 times at last count. He still does the scream most of the time, but I've seen him just let the band play without it maybe 2-3 times. It seems like it's all or nothing. If he can't do it at that particular show, then he rightfully doesn't go for it. Also, the scream isn't as gritty live, which makes sense because the man is pushing 60 and not a youngster like when this was recorded. Still, much respect.
Listening to this on a killer car stereo must be intense feeling the song in your body....with my head set it just vibrates my brain....I need a good stereo...and a car...thankfully I have some decent Bluetooth headphones.
I think what makes the scream so good (beyond the technical and emotional skill needed to perform it) is that it seems like the perfect conclusion and expression of frustration for the buildup that the lyrics and the music both created. In terms of like music composition, I almost feel like you couldn't get away with a shorter scream than that with as big off a buildup as was crafted and make it as impactful. One really good scream that was half as long would still feel good, but it wouldn't necessarily be the payoff of the musical buildup that would match the rest of the bands intense playing. Lyrically, nothing said could really get over the frustration of the subject matter and the anger that this regression back into that subject matter creates. To me, it's one of the most succinct and raw emotional moments in music history. I've never quite heard anything like it.
This is amazing but I'm worried that, after having covid twice, his lung capacity is going to be diminished. MJK said that he can feel lasting effects in his lungs & for a singer especially, that's gotta be rough. Hope he is okay.
Seen it live a couple time with other screams, can't hold them quite as long now, but still can belt it out. I used Ticks and Leeches scream for a alarm wake up for a while, LOL!
You think the scream will be as long as the pattern, 4 measures.. But then he keeps going... And going... And going... Think it'll end? Nope, another..
@@lesflynn4455 no arguments- i got Covid 13 days after show-sick 3 days- just like every other seasonal cold i have ever had (and im 50 years old)- that notwithstanding-he was sick, they made an easy setlist, vocals were not great or really even good- i was 5th row so i really didnt care at the time so im not hating=- I have VIP for Eugene and 12th row Tacoma-
@@assmaster420 I think he might have caught it the first time while here in Australia, as he was diagnosed while in NZ straight after. They played a few shows in NZ while he was sick. Good on you for getting tickets early. I'm determined to see them next time they tour down under. If they do. Finally the country is opening up again.

i think he used to do like 23 out of the whole thing
I tried this scream in the shower, almost passed out
Also saw it live, and I recall EVERYONE staggering around for a few seconds after.
He did the scream at their most recent show, he still has it in him
@@fedora997 Yes he sure did. I was there in Sac! What a show!!!
Ahah, I love the evolution of expressions on people's faces from "yeah, nice scream" to "I can't believe he did this in one take".
Years ago in an interview, they asked him about this particular scream... He said afterwards there was a pile of puke below him..... UNREAL

Pfft unreal.
Oh man, that intermission, perfect.

Brooo I didn’t see it coming and idk why 😂😂😂

Lol, literal Intermission. I get chills every time that scream drops.

I did not know I needed this in my life
Jamel aka Jamal had a great reaction to the scream as well
Imagine a Young Maynard and a Young Sean Schemmel the voice of Goku having a scream off.
I actually imagined this scream with the part where Gohan becomes powered up by the Old Kai and tests his power out.
They'd both ascend...
I’ve listened to the same riff and scream a million times 😂👍
Kicking it off with Detrucci! He is one good dude.
yessir
Legends say he´s still screaming, he just left the recording room
Lmao the intermission in the middle… whoever made this is absolutely a Tool fan

The scream IS LIKE a grudge. You just don't expect how long it'll go on for.
This was a FANTASTIC upload!
Thanks for editing this all together!
Fricking love it man 🤘🏻
Man, I love this band.
I honestly can’t get enough of these! Thank you for making them. That was quite a ride, and experience. ❤️🔥
One of the heaviest screams ever recorded. Great video, loved the intermission.

You know you are a tool fan if you skipped the intermission.
Why would a Tool fan skip a Tool song though?
Maynard, the only human who’s scream could scare the shit out of Sasquatch.
That's one of the best lines I've ever heard. You might be right:)
I love this! ❤️
Great job!!
Thx 🙂

I wish I could go Super Saiyan like Maynard does.
Dude emptied his lungs completely...I bought this album the day it came out and cranked it on a road trip to the ocean...there were spine tingles
In addition to the Stank Face we all got first time, I’m loving the O face we all get around 15 seconds into the Scream.
it's always around 8-12 seconds into it that people start to get uneasy.... :-)

The best scream RATM ever had was Maynard in KYE. And I love Rage.

@@gregdavis420 For maybe 10 seconds though at best.

8:04 "Was that a scream?"
