American here, saw these guys live in San Francisco, 1987, in a small club, with a girl who ended up being my girlfriend for almost 7 years. A lot of nostalgia for this song, and the whole album. Amazing concert
New Zealander here, that song is iconic in New Zealand. I watched your face the whole time, with a huge smile on mine!!! I love how you appreciated it the way we do :D If I can recommend another Neil Finn song, Message to my girl. This was written while he was in Split Enz with his brother, Tim. @@thomasm195 I stumbled onto "don't dream it's over" with Neil Finn on acoustic guitar accompanied by a string section and it got me through the lockdowns of last year. That rendition of this song is just so beautiful.
Now I’m walking again, to the beat of a drum, and I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart....just a great lyric. One of my favorite songs from the 80s
@@scottboswell6406 Even though I'd heard this song probably hundreds of times, I never picked up that that line was a nod to Across the Universe ("words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup...") An interviewer mentioned it in conversation with Neil. Definite Doh! moment for me ha ha. Neil said Across the Universe is the song he most wishes he'd written.
I can't think of any bands I dislike more than FM. I hope they decide to retire so he's done with that. I'd be happy if he stayed with Crowdies, or did more solo albums, or Finn Bros, or 7 Worlds Collide, or something he hasn't done yet - a duo with Don McGlashan.
Here's another one. Imagine someone writing this for you, and singing it to you. Neil wrote this for his wife when they were struggling in life. One of my life flexes is the Finns are my cousins and ive heard covers of their songs from around the world and its so nice to see. Thanks for show casing this
I saw Crowded House a couple of weeks ago at their concert in Auckland, New Zealand. Fantastic, and the magic is still here after 30+ years of their music. Thanks for playing this.
I saw their "Farewell to the World" concert on November 24, 1996 on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. One of the best concerts I've ever experienced.
Brothers Tim and Neil Finn are incredible song writers/musicians. Neil is currently a touring member of Fleetwood Mac. He took over from Lindsey. ❤️Four Seasons In One Day is another beauty from Crowded House.
Fleetwood Mac has gone thru numerous changes while I was growing up. They were all good...at the time, but the original is my favorite, this many years later. My first ever experience getting caught up in a riot is when the police pulled the plug on them, right in the middle of a song.! NOT COOL, TEAR GAS IS UNPLEASANT!! C'mon man, let there be rock 😎 or we will voice our grievances ! 1972 Stockton, Ca
My dad played bass in local bands for fifty years. One of his favorites. Glad you mentioned that bass line. Something inside me expands when I hear this one. 💗
It kinda hurts now, we all thought Paul was the joker, happy guy.... and well, he was overcompensating. Still a fave, but like better be home soon, so different now
A real tear jerker is Neil Finn performing “Better Be Home Soon” at the 2005 Aria Awards in memory of Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, who took his own life on 26 March 2005.
@@DreamsSketcher I understand that because the lyrics are hopeful but the tone of the song and pace always made me sad as a kid. The song reminds me when a bad period of time is brand new and thats when uncertainty, change is at its highest and you have no hope at the time so you say "don't dreams it over." to keep you going in a era of your life. The Beach Boy's "Wouldn't it be nice." Is actually one of the saddest songs around even though it sounds like a light hearted love song. It's about how he could wish he was in a long lasting and loving relationship that's probably never going to happen. Songs of hopefulness can carry sadness to it as well but I love "Don't dream its over." for the emotions it triggers in me.
R.I.P Paul Hester!! Don't Dream It's Over still gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it now just like when I was child, and the inspirational message in the lyrics helped me get through a lot of tough times.
I just love the absolute joy on your face when you hear these songs for the first time. As we have just grown up hearing artists like Crowded House and John Farnham we dont really appreciate how deep their messages were. Keep up the great work and the positive vibes you are bringing to people. Don't under estimate the joy you are bringing to people and opening up their minds.
Agreed. I'm a huge fan of Neil & Crowded House and this song never fails to move me no matter how many times I hear it, BUT watching this video made me feel even more emotional about it than I usually do. I was very choked up. Plus I LOVED his reaction to Nick on bass because to me he's kind of an unsung hero of the band. I love his personality and I think he brings out some wonderful qualities in Neil on stage. :D
Neil did a solo performance of Better be Home soon at the ARIA awards dedicated to Paul after he died. The video is on you tube just search Paul Hester tribute. So sad. You could tell on his face he as trying so hard not to cry.
I totally agree Depression is hideous disease RIP Paul. The concert they had on the opera house steps was their best ever live performance without a doubt.
definite second on ALL of those: WEATHER WITH YOU, IT'S ONLY NATURAL i have to be in the right mood for Four Seasons in One Day--it tends to get to me--but it is a great song
FSIOD is my favorite song. DDIO & Weather are up there too. I like It's Only Natural a lot too but there are so many great and good songs by NF they can't all be favorites! :D
Man, more classic 80's memories...miss those days! I think the saying was, "you've got to go through 'hell' before you get to 'heaven' ". Steve Miller on "Jet Airliner" references this!
Neil Finn is from my hometown. I remember being a kid maybe 8 or 9 sitting in my bedroom window listening to them play their farwell tour as Split Enz at Albert Park before going on to form Crowded House. Needless to say their music has always had a special place in my life, formative even. Te Awamutu, NZ's Rosetown, in Waipa Distlrict, The Home Of Champions.
I’m a bass player and I learned this song about a year ago for my cover band. It blew me away how powerful the bass was underneath such a beautiful melody. First comment by Jamel; “that bass!”
My favourite group of all time, singing my favourite song of all time, this song saved me from a very dark place once upon a time, glad you enjoyed it too..
Couldn’t agree more. Though they only had one other big hit with “Something So Strong” from the same album. Having lived in New Zealand in the early 90’s I was exposed to all of their music. It’s all great! My personal favorite album is Together Alone.
Neil Finn is a master song writer. Better Be Home Soon is a unofficial anthem here in NZ. Split Enz and Crowded House were my first concerts. The CH were always fun and emotional. Rip Paul Hester, you gave teenage me a love of not just music but especially live music. The Finns are kiwi music royalty. Both have sons who have music out, Liam had a band Betchadupa and Harper has a song getting a lot of radio play at the moment.
Their farewell concert was one of the most special moments of my teens. Such a wonderful vibe, so bittersweet and such a community feeling. The love was huge.
Truly one of the finest pop songs ever recorded. Contains one of my all-time favorite lyrics: "In the paper today, tales of war and of waste... but you turn right over to the TV page." Great choice, Jamel.
Their farewell and return concerts at the Sydney Opera House were second to none. Absolute perfection. Bass player is Nick Seymour, brother of Mark Seymour, lead singer of Hunters & Collectors. Another criminally underrated Aussie band.
Thanks for mentioning H&C. I met Mark and John Archer briefly, after a gig in a small club here in Hollywood around the time of The Jaws of Life. After that, I'd see them play in small clubs. I wore a black chauffeur's cap and stood in the front row. Mark Seymour would grab it off my head and wear it for about three songs, then put it back. This happened at two different shows. Lots of fun. It was insane to be interacting with Hunters and Collectors while they were playing, but I realized he is one of those guys who always looks soooo serious, but is actually quite funny. When they did Say Goodbye, Mark leaned over and screamed the line "You don't make me feel like a woman anymore!" right in my face. I think he was wearing my hat at the time. Those were the days.
The precursor to Crowded House was Split Enz, another worthy band with the Finn Brothers. Ghost Girl, I Got You, or One Step Ahead are good songs to react to.
Crowded House have been one of my favorites forever, I would see them in concert whenever possible and Neil Finn on his own as well......absolutely love their music!
They just toured NZ this spring and will be touring more countries when coronavirus permits. Their new album called Dreamers Are Waiting comes out JUNE 4!
The first time I've clicked 'like' before I watched the video. How many other Kiwis here? Lots more amazing songs by Crowded House. Hope you'll do some more. Weather With You, Better Be Home Soon, Four Seasons in One Day...
actually saw that lead singer of crowded house playing with Fleetwood Mac in New Orleans in place of Lindsay Buckingham in 2018, it was amazing, he even played this song which was a nice touch
I'm a die-hard metal guy through and through, but man I gotta tell ya this is one of the best songs ever written and recorded. Absolutely love everything about it, and it has a great message behind it. Great choice and great job with the channel. Cheers!
National treasures for us New Zealanders! Brilliant musicians and Neil Finn is an outstanding songwriter. Thanks for appreciating this and bringing back soo many memories for me. Peace.
What a great song! Thank you Jamel, you have such a great spirit to you, we are all brothers in music. Music is the lubricant of Humanity. Merci from Canada
FINALLY!!! My absolute favorite band of all time (if the Beatles never existed, of course). Neil Finn is a god. And yes, Nick Seymour is a criminally underrated bassist.
So glad you did this! TONS of good stuff from these guys - Better Be Home Soon, Something So Strong, It's Only Natural.....could go on for a while. Neil has quite a way with words.
Met these guys back in 85 or 86 and spent the day with them in a water park , where they played a night time concert . All 3 were just damn good dudes to hang with the staff , not to mention share the catered backstage with hungry lifeguards . A day I will always remember.
I saw Neil Finn perform this song at a Fleetwood Mac concert a few years ago - it was one of the best moments of a concert I have ever experienced. It's a song I've loved since it came out in the 1980s.
Bro - you should hear this song live. It literally fills your heart with joy and you can see the smiles on the faces on the people around you. Lyrically, an absolute masterpiece and what music should be.
With darn good reason. They invaded the music scene with their fresh sound and beautiful lyrics. I saw them twice, once in a stadium and once in an acoustically perfect theater. Still one of my favourite performances of all time because of their pure, intimate stage presence.
Things ain't cookin', in my kitchen Strange affliction wash over me Julius Caesar, and the Roman Empire Couldn't conquer the blue sky Well, there's a small boat made of china It's going nowhere on the mantlepiece Well, do I lie like a loungeroom lizard Or do I sing like a bird released?
One of my top ten bands. Their lyrics are poetry and the music is amazing. "Weather with You", "Sister Madly", "Better Be Home Soon", "Pineapple Head" just to name a few.
Considering they transitioned from their Split Enz identity days into Crowded House...for me it fascinates and so powerful and I love both. Thanks for experiencing this heart deep power ballad💕"hey now" forever💗

American here, saw these guys live in San Francisco, 1987, in a small club, with a girl who ended up being my girlfriend for almost 7 years. A lot of nostalgia for this song, and the whole album. Amazing concert
Like Crowded House, but love Split Enz!
be better if it was TISM
New Zealander here, that song is iconic in New Zealand. I watched your face the whole time, with a huge smile on mine!!! I love how you appreciated it the way we do :D If I can recommend another Neil Finn song, Message to my girl. This was written while he was in Split Enz with his brother, Tim. Its possibly the perfect song :D
Love Split Enz!
Message to my Girl is the most amazing song. Split Enz truly were phenomenal!
Split Enz rocked
This song is different and tugs at the heart stings.
1986
The version of him with an orchestra is even better 🥲
@@thomasm195 I stumbled onto "don't dream it's over" with Neil Finn on acoustic guitar accompanied by a string section and it got me through the lockdowns of last year. That rendition of this song is just so beautiful.
💜
Yes!!!
Now I’m walking again, to the beat of a drum, and I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart....just a great lyric. One of my favorite songs from the 80s
"My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof" is great to me - owning to much stuff can control your life.
@@NPC-fl3gq Just bout every line is poetry! "Catch the deluge in a paper cup"!
I love that awesome line! ❤
@@NPC-fl3gq I always think of his guitars and other musical instruments sticking out of his car roof when I hear this line! 🎸😆
Neil is super talented. From “Split Enz” to “Crowded House” to “Fleetwood Mac”! All his work is outstanding!
I saw split endz in townsville in 82. Great show
@@patrickcoreilly fantastic!! I remember how their record album disc had a type of laser surface effect!
@@patrickcoreilly I saw my first concert in Townsville in the 70's! Joe Cocker. I couldn't have been any older than 4. 😀
"Now I'm walking again, To the beat of a drum, And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart" is just about the most romantic set of lyrics ...
Here's another one.
Imagine someone writing this for you, and singing it to you.
"Tie my hands behind my back
Put a gag on top of my mouth
But I won't give you up
Till silverware's covered in dust
And my shoes fall apart
And the tumbleweed runs
Over my desert heart
So turn and run
You cold killers of innocence
Against us there's no defence
Your flash and your wickedness
Will surely bring you down again
Somehow we must stay afloat
Won't give in to the undertow
Something's you will never know
You can't break our love
You can pull us down
But you can't break our love"
(Turn and Run by Neil Finn)
Neil wrote this for his wife when they were struggling in life. One of my life flexes is the Finns are my cousins and ive heard covers of their songs from around the world and its so nice to see. Thanks for show casing this
The nurse that gave me my Covid vaccine in Denver today, was wearing one of your "Be a Good Human" shirts...😀
That is so cool....a nurse giving a vaccine while wearing a shirt of the coolest guy throughout COVID!
How awesome is that?

I saw Crowded House a couple of weeks ago at their concert in Auckland, New Zealand. Fantastic, and the magic is still here after 30+ years of their music. Thanks for playing this.
Amazing concert huh? Took my kids to the Friday night concert in Auckland.
I’m completely jealous! Can’t wait till we can come and visit you cousin!
I saw their "Farewell to the World" concert on November 24, 1996 on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. One of the best concerts I've ever experienced.
YOU'RE SO LUCKY! :D
@@TheBTG88 Wow! That must have been incredible. Exciting yet sad.
Brothers Tim and Neil Finn are incredible song writers/musicians. Neil is currently a touring member of Fleetwood Mac. He took over from Lindsey. ❤️Four Seasons In One Day is another beauty from Crowded House.
Bought Tim’s ‘Before and After’ album in ‘93. Brilliant Album.
Crowded house just released a new album this year, so I think he has put the Fleetwood Mac stuff on hold for a bit.
To be precise both Neil and Mike Campbell together replaced Lindsey Buckingham. It took 2 guitarists to replace one Buckingham.
Don’t forget ‘Weather With You’!
My dad played bass in local bands for fifty years. One of his favorites. Glad you mentioned that bass line. Something inside me expands when I hear this one. 💗
This song always took me to a place of peace that i cant describe... especially the way he sings each verse
Their "Something So Strong" is just a quick, fun jaunt. It'll make you feel good! 🙂
It kinda hurts now, we all thought Paul was the joker, happy guy.... and well, he was overcompensating. Still a fave, but like better be home soon, so different now
Something so strong ....love that one

Some songs are timeless.
A real tear jerker is Neil Finn performing “Better Be Home Soon” at the 2005 Aria Awards in memory of Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, who took his own life on 26 March 2005.
I remember the first time I heard this. I was driving to a friend's house and I was instantly just hypnotized by it. Haunting melancholy.
I grew up listening to this song. It was ok at the time, I was young. It’s only as you get older you realise & understand what a brilliant song it is.
I was a little older, actually a lot older, 21, when it came out in 1986. I caught it right then, as a keeper, not just for the 80s but for all time.
One of my favorite 80's songs and such a sad one and I love it. Just one of those tracks that you hear ever so often and it just hits deep.
I always found it ultimately hopeful....
One of the best songs ever written - an absolute stone classic.
The two saddest days, Paul Hester’s suicide and Crowded House’s last concert xx
Luckily, only one of them was permanent.
Paul made everyone else laugh while hiding his pain. RIP Paul.
The concert they had on the opera house steps was their best ever live performance without a doubt.
yea his suicide was sad for sure. But the band is still up and playing they even have new music

I've always loved this song. A couple my other favourites by Crowded House are 'Weather with you', 'Four Seasons in one day' and 'It's only natural'.
definite second on ALL of those: WEATHER WITH YOU, IT'S ONLY NATURAL
i have to be in the right mood for Four Seasons in One Day--it tends to get to me--but it is a great song
Or the Ozark Mountain Daredevils song "If You Want to Get to Heaven (You Got to Raise a Little Hell)."
Neil Finn is from my hometown. I remember being a kid maybe 8 or 9 sitting in my bedroom window listening to them play their farwell tour as Split Enz at Albert Park before going on to form Crowded House. Needless to say their music has always had a special place in my life, formative even.

Hessys beautiful smile.... still so sad he's gone
I’m a bass player and I learned this song about a year ago for my cover band. It blew me away how powerful the bass was underneath such a beautiful melody. First comment by Jamel; “that bass!”
me (white): the bass?.......(listens closer)........... oh yeh there IS bass in this
XD
Fall at your feet. Brilliant songwriting
My favourite group of all time, singing my favourite song of all time, this song saved me from a very dark place once upon a time, glad you enjoyed it too..

Glad you’re still here.
i've been listening to this for years ,and it just opens up more and gets better with time . it's just magnificent .
Such a great song, still resonates in my 80's ears!
If you’re going to do Crowded House, you HAVE TO do some Split Enz too! “Six Months on a Leaky Boat” or “Dirty Creature”.
My thoughts exactly 👍
The "Pioneer" intro to Six Months on a Leaky Boat MAKES the song, and is a must! It's not the same without it.
Dave, dude-“Dirty Creature”!
I See Red!
Excellent choices 👍
If you enjoyed that there is a huge catalogue of great songs to enjoy from Crowded House. BTW the song came out in 1986.
Couldn’t agree more. Though they only had one other big hit with “Something So Strong” from the same album. Having lived in New Zealand in the early 90’s I was exposed to all of their music. It’s all great! My personal favorite album is Together Alone.
@@davedurbz7762 Woodface was huge in Australia at a time when Alternative Rock was dominating the charts.

My personal anthem is "Weather With You" All about creating your own environment around, you no matter where you are. Powerful stuff!!!
Their farewell concert was one of the most special moments of my teens. Such a wonderful vibe, so bittersweet and such a community feeling. The love was huge.
Timeless track.. never gets old for me , just love it ..such a talented group of musicians
Mark and Nick were born in my home town. H&C have come back on multiple occasions to play free concerts at our local festival.
NZ not Aussie though.
Neil is a kiwi. Crowded House is Australian. Even Neil calls the Crowdies an Australian band.
Hunters & Collectors Say Goodbye has one of the most awesome Bass parts of that era in Aussie music
The precursor to Crowded House was Split Enz, another worthy band with the Finn Brothers. Ghost Girl, I Got You, or One Step Ahead are good songs to react to.
Absolutely iconic 80s song. I get a little nostalgic when I hear it, and I get a bit melancholy.
This was an instant hit for Crowded House, it was released in 1986 and it was their biggest hit! I love this song!! The eighties were great!❤️❤️
One of those perfect songs. Nothing is out of place, everything is where it should and needs to be. Never fails to give me goosebumps.
It's a rare gem 💎💕
Crowded House has so many great songs.

My fave line in the song
“There is freedom without trying to catch the deluge in a paper cup.”

I am so glad that I am already in my 60's. I got to listen to this sort of music all my life.

I saw Neil Finn perform this song at a Fleetwood Mac concert a few years ago - it was one of the best moments of a concert I have ever experienced. It's a song I've loved since it came out in the 1980s.
Hearing Stevie Nicks sing this when Neil Finn toured with Fleetwood Mac was awesome.

One of my all time favorite songs.
We are so proud of these boys here in NZ
Why was I positive that this was a Scottish band until just now?
With darn good reason. They invaded the music scene with their fresh sound and beautiful lyrics. I saw them twice, once in a stadium and once in an acoustically perfect theater. Still one of my favourite performances of all time because of their pure, intimate stage presence.
