Crowded House is a great band!! Original band made up of New Zealanders and Australian's...started out in Melbourne Australia 😊😊 I love how you spotted the vegemite!!🤣🤣
Crowded House is definately up there with INXS and AC/DC as one of biggest groups from Australia. Neil Finn is from NZ and one of the greatest Kiwi artists of all time.
Crowded House were NZ's Neil Finn and Aussies Nick Seymour and Paul Hester. They performed a farewell concert in 1996 on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. That concert is so widely loved in Australia that they reunited 20 years later in 2016 for another concert at the same spot. Sadly though Paul Hester (drummer) died in 2005. Both these concerts are very much worth watching. If you search Crowded House Sydney Opera House you'll find all the songs.
This is Crowded House’s original song. Massively popular song in the 80’s. Neil Finn is one of the most amazing songsmiths around. Songs like Better be home soon, Help is coming, Weather with you, Catherine Wheels.. incredible.
Nick Seymour, the guitarist, is the brother of Mark Seymour, lead singer of Hunters and collectors. Check out "Throw your arms around me" yet another 80's aussie anthem!
This one was my request! One of my favourite bands, Neil Finn is a Kiwi but they founded the band in Melbourne. Still making music today, although they did break up in 1996 with a free concert for some 100,000 Sydneysiders on the steps of the Opera house, and reformed in 2006. They released an album this year, and won the ARIA award (more or less Aussie Grammies) for Best Album. Neil Finn recently did a stint replacing Lindsay Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac as has already been mentioned in a few other comments. Glad you enjoyed it!
Crowded House sang this song on the steps of the Sydney Opera House when the band retired. It was so beautiful, thousands of people in the crowd and so many tears!
Neil Finn had a band with his brother Tim Finn called Splitz Enz. Mix of really quirky and interesting songs. Personally I love their ultimate break up song, I Hope I Never. Hauntingly beautiful and sung by Tim I think.
watch the live version with strings in auckland 2015 i think it was......his voice is amazing and the strings add to it....and the lyrics are timeless.....because there still relevant today.....not australian...from nz...but based in aus for a long time...
I like New Zealand music from that period. They had a certain way of doing base which puts you at ease. Another great example of that is a song called "Juice" by "Headless Chickens".
@joeboyd5349 25 Apr 1987 - 1. I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me). Aretha Franklin & George Michael. 2. Don't Dream It's Over. Crowded House. Unfortunately it only held the number 2 spot for the week before dropping down a spot to number 3 the following week then number 5 the week after before falling out of the Top 10. While at the same time 'I knew you were waiting (For Me)' dropped from number 1 spot to number 7 the following week and then number 10 the week after.
They're so beloved here in Australia that we like to call them our own, even if they are technically kiwis. I saw Miley and Ariana cover it too and pictured Miley's then husband Liam Hemsworth, introducing her to some music that was popular in his country. I'm so glad you loved this :)

Yes, this is the ORIGINAL of the song, way back in 1986. Before you were born! They were a very well know band (even in the US) then. They were part Australian, part New Zealand. They also had a previous incarnation as a band called Split Enz, also very popular with a number of hits. Unfortunately the drummer in the video, Paul Hester, committed suicide in 2005 in a public park in Melbourne (Australia). It's all in their Wikipedia entry.
We like to claim them as Aussies but they're originally from NZ (look into Split Enz). They did become very famous in Australia though. I grew up on this music, it is linked with the best memories of childhood. Love'em
Crowded House are one of the greatest bands ever. They still tour, including last year, and it was one of the best concerts I've been to (and I've been to a few of theirs, and MANY of John Farnham's). So so so good.
Crowded House started with 1 New Zealander (Lead singer and songwriter Neil Finn and previously in a band called Split Enz. Also excellent. You should check them out) and 2 Aussies here in Australia. The bass player is Nick Seymour who is the brother of Mark Seymour from a band called Hunters and Collectors. The drummer here Paul Hester took his own life a few years ago from depression (RIP). I saw them a couple of times live and they were always amazing. You should learn and sing this song! It's a beatiful song. Peace... ✌️
One of two of the NZ v Australia debates...Crowded House are they Australian or Kiwi (I will always argue 2 band members being Australian and it annoys my kiwi friends so much) and is Phar Lap Kiwi or Australian? Nick welcome to the universal debates between my people and NZ hahaha
This band just sounds like my childhood in the 80s. Good times. I remember finding an old magazine in one of my classes in high school and it was from around....1988 and it featured this band. These guys were a huge global success. Not just in Australia and NZ but in the US too
I didn’t know Miley and Ariana covered this! This song has been so huge here in Australia and New Zealand. Great road trip singalong, takes me back to my childhood! 🎶 🚙 🎤
They covered it twice as far as I've seen. They did it first in a backyard concert in animal onsies just joking around it's an adorable video. They later did another cover at Ariana's One Love Manchester fundraiser following the bombing at Ariana's concert. They're both great
I love that you just called this a road trip song, as I hadn't been home to NZ in 13 years and as we were driving through Te Awamutu (Finn's hometown) this came on the radio. Utterly surreal moment!
Crowded House are Aussie music royalty and icons. Neil Finn's songwriting of this track alone, proves how amazingly talented he is. Four decades on and the lyrics and song are timeless and collecting new, younger audiences. Amazing.
Yes beautiful song. Neil was also in a band split enz with his brother. Message to my girl is another beautiful song... knock yourself out listening to all their stuff
I remember seeing Split Enz live at a small club in the 70's, before they were well known, they had to walk in passed everyone, they looked like average guys, then they went out into another room at the back, and then came out looking so different. They were very good.
Neil Finn was originally in a band with his brother called Split Enz (NZ). Then formed Crowded House with others band members in Oz. So loved ❤ Another great Aussie Group to listen to is the Screaming Jets, Better
This is one of my favorite songs of the 80s, and in general. It was a massive hit at the time. It's one of those songs that give me that rush of nostalgic happiness every time I hear it.
The Finn brothers from New Zealand are always No.1 in Australia too. Both classically trained by their parents with a wealth of talent. "I hope I never" is a wonderful song with a piano section that is pure Mozart. Both of them were part of "Crouded House" and "Split Endz". So many stars around the world do covers of their songs because they are wonderful songwriters.
I think most of Australia cried when they sung that song live at Sydney Opera house on Nov 24th 1996 for their " farewell" tour. It's such a beautiful song. 100K people turned up at the concert. Search it up live! Going to go listen to Miley & Ariana now
Crowded House is a group. Theyve been together forever. This is one of their wonderful songs. They come from New Zealand. Hugely talentedguys, Tim and Neil Finn are the spine and guts of the group, I think both brothers wriite and perform. Beautiful lyrics and harmonies. Fabulous !
I love that you knew they were Australian by spotting the Vegemite on toast! I almost spat out my dinner laughing when you said, “The devil is alive for me!”
This was a big hit in the US at the time. Almost made #1 on the Billboard chart. The lead singer here, Neil Finn, actually was one of two new members (the other being Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell) asked to join Fleetwood Mac after they fired Lindsay Buckingham. In concert in 2018, they sang this song.
One of the best ever Australian / New Zealand bands ever! Started in Melbourne with 1 NZer Neil Finn the singer, and 2 Aussies Drums and Bass. Neil's brother Tim joined for a short while a couple of albums in. They did 2 of the greatest concerts here , both at the Sydney Opera House forecourt. Once - a farewell -when they were splitting up, and then about 20 years later as an Anniversary. Superb.
This song was HUGE in New Zealand and Australia when it was released. Neil Finn is a NZ'er, he moved to Melbourne and formed Crowded House after the original Finn brothers band - Split Enz - split up. There's a lot of debate whether it's a Kiwi or Aussie band, even the cbd tram tour in Melbourne mentions Crowded House.
Another thing, my former husband, Tim - who is a Kiwi (from New Zealand) - used to watch them playing at his varsity pub. They played at Otago University…they will eternally remind me of him. When we first started dating, he told me there was song that reminded him of me…it was Distant son - that sons and others were the soundtrack of our relationship. Always hits me in very sentimental places. ❤️
They began by playing at festivals in Australia and New Zealand and released their debut album, Crowded House, in August 1986. ... The next single, "Don't Dream It's Over", was released in October 1986 and proved an international hit, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one in Canada.
Crowed House was huge in the 80’s and was formed after Neil Finn left his previous legendary band Split Endz. I remember the industry anticipation for this album and as a A&R trainee I was lucky enough to attend a showcase for radio & club dj’s at The Diamond Club in Toronto just before the official release. Amazing show and I loved this song from first listen and made sure I got it into every club that mattered.
One of my all time favourite songs and bands. Crowded House are an iconic Australian and New Zealand band. One of the finest collaborations accross the ditch hehe. I was lucky enough to see their special anniversary concert a few years ago. It was outdoors in front of the opera House. We sat on the steps. Magical night. Can't explain but the energy and vibe was incredible. They televised/streamed one of the shows too. So there's some good footage out there. The crowd was incredible. "Fall at your feet" is another beautiful song, and the version from that anniversary concert in 2016 was stunning. Especially the encore at the end of the song with just the crowd singing 😍.
Neil Finn was asked by Mick Fleetwood to join Fleetwood Mac after Lindsey Buckingham was given his marching orders. He toured with them in 2018-2019. Crowded House a legendary band & Neil Finn is without doubt one of the finest songwriters ever. A very proud Kiwi who aussies are happy to claim as one of us. We do it all the time.
Dawg , I could see you getting goosebumps , . ‘Throw your arms around me’ .. by ‘Hunters & Collectors’. .. it’s sweet tripping.. BTW the singer of this video ‘Neil Finn’ is now a member of Fleetwood Mac.
Crowded House is legendary! Most covers of their songs do not come close to the real thing, but I know you like Stan Walker also, look up the cover He and Isaiah did of this song in English, Indigenous NZ Māori and Indigenous Australian an Aboroginal dialect. It is so passionate.
Neil Finn "Don't Dream It's Over" is a song by rock band Crowded House, recorded for their 1986 self-titled debut studio album. The song was composed and written by New Zealand frontman Neil Finn and released in October 1986 as the fourth single from the album.
Neil Finn was the only Kiwi in the original lineup, the other two were Aussies and the band was formed in Australia. Tim only joined later for one album and Neil says himself it's an Aussie band
Came from a great era of Australian music. Crowded House, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, INXS, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters & collectors and a plethora more. Our little island continent more than holds its own musically, even if only domestically. Catchy, well written story telling anthems that the pub loved and continues to do so live or on a jukebox.
This song is also featured in a lot of Hollywood movies👍. The song went to #2 in the US. Neil has Brother Tim. Back in the 70s/80s they had a band called Split Enz. That band were very flamboyant, makeup, costumes, hair. At the time, I remember when I first saw them, I thought wtf 🤣. 6 months in a leaky boat was a great song they had. Check them out in your spare time if you have any 🤔
I used to go see them in the Wellington Town Hall (acoustics so good that orchestras record there) and coming out not being able to hear a damn thing for hours. Great times.
Fun Fact: Fleetwood Mac invited Neil to lead for them on their tour 2019/20 something like that. That's how good he is and how well he is admired. Wilco also collaborated with him.
Wow man hadn't heard this song in soo long. It is a great song loved it back when lol. Your reaction was wonderful as always and thank you for the memories that this song brings with it. 😘☺️
My absolute favourite band in the whole world! Neil Finn is an amazing songwriter and vocalist and just overall musician. Listen to the words in his songs, they are so memorable. I'm so glad you've discovered them! Neil recently (pre-covid) was a part of Fleetwood Mac and CH have just announced a new tour here! RIP Paul Hester 💔
I love this band. First concert I went to was Crowded House. Paul was such a character! I was crying seeing his beautiful smile again. I hope he rests knowing the joy he gave this world.
Not an easy song to sing but you sing it BEAUTIFULLY! This song came out in 1987. I was a senior in high school and absolutely loved pop music, especially if it was original or different. When I first heard this song, I was gobsmacked! I thought that someone had written a perfect song. That someone was Neil Finn. Asked my local radio dj to play it one morning before school and got it recorded on my good ol' tape recorder. Ah...the 80s!
Neil Finn is simply one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Even Paul McCartney is a fan.
Actually, Paul said he likes Neil's songs but never said he was the greatest songwriter ever
"McCartney also confirmed in the over-30 minute chat that the long-running rumour he once referred to Crowded House frontman, Neil Finn, as the world's greatest songwriter is false.

@@Jedda73 I was there too. What an incredible night that was
I think most of Australia cried when they sung that song live at Sydney Opera house on Nov 24th 1996 for their " farewell" tour. It's such a beautiful song. 100K people turned up at the concert. Search it up live!
Going to go listen to Miley & Ariana now
And this beautiful song gets stuck in my head everytime I here it, love it.
Crowded House have USA fans. There were people who travelled from all over, to attend the farewell concert. 😊
Crowded House is a group. Theyve been together forever. This is one of their wonderful songs. They come from New Zealand. Hugely talentedguys, Tim and Neil Finn are the spine and guts of the group, I think both brothers wriite and perform. Beautiful lyrics and harmonies. Fabulous !
I have listened to this song by Crowded House SO many times. Each time it makes me feel SO good
You can't not love Crowded House! Iconic legends!!
I love that you knew they were Australian by spotting the Vegemite on toast! I almost spat out my dinner laughing when you said, “The devil is alive for me!”
I am living!!!!
The Bassists brother is lead singer for another great Aussie band, Hunters and Collectors.
A fabulous song from a great, great band, loved your reaction mate... Loved this.
Neil most recently played with Fleetwood Mac, awesome song writer.
Vegemite...B vitamins
This song...A beautiful song...live too, beautiful...
I was at their first live show ever in Melbourne 1986 playing the front downstairs room at Earls court`The Venue'
in St Kilda. It was a great show :-)
Crowed House was huge in the 80’s and was formed after Neil Finn left his previous legendary band Split Endz. I remember the industry anticipation for this album and as a A&R trainee I was lucky enough to attend a showcase for radio & club dj’s at The Diamond Club in Toronto just before the official release. Amazing show and I loved this song from first listen and made sure I got it into every club that mattered.
Great song
This was their 2nd ever single. Mean To Me was their first and it was a fun pop song.
Oh ny goodness Nick, you have to hear Crowded House live they're incredible.
I thought I sent the farewell to the world version of this song, it may not have been available in the US?
Dawg , I could see you getting goosebumps , . ‘Throw your arms around me’ .. by ‘Hunters & Collectors’. .. it’s sweet tripping.. BTW the singer of this video ‘Neil Finn’ is now a member of Fleetwood Mac.
Crowded House is legendary! Most covers of their songs do not come close to the real thing, but I know you like Stan Walker also, look up the cover He and Isaiah did of this song in English, Indigenous NZ Māori and Indigenous Australian an Aboroginal dialect. It is so passionate.
Ooh, I know what I'm looking up now
Neil Finn
"Don't Dream It's Over" is a song by rock band Crowded House, recorded for their 1986 self-titled debut studio album. The song was composed and written by New Zealand frontman Neil Finn and released in October 1986 as the fourth single from the album.
As Australians we wish Crowded House was ours but it's from our New Zealand brothers. One of the best bands ever
joint effort, band was formed in australia with kiwi and aussie band members.
Haha I love how he recognises Vegemite
How could I forget lol
An all time great song.
@@nzlemming must have been great😊. You know you've been to a great concert when you come and are half deaf for days eh, 🤣🙉
@@leandabee Yup yup yup. Bass U Feel.
💖💖💖💖 Crowded House, so lucky to have had this band influencing my teenage years. Blessed to have grown through the 80s.
Fun Fact: Fleetwood Mac invited Neil to lead for them on their tour 2019/20 something like that. That's how good he is and how well he is admired. Wilco also collaborated with him.
This song is only a handful of years off being 40 years old. Unbelievable!!! One song that has well and truly stood the test of time.
Wow man hadn't heard this song in soo long. It is a great song loved it back when lol. Your reaction was wonderful as always and thank you for the memories that this song brings with it. 😘☺️
Ah, Crowded House. Neil Finn is a musical genius! LOVE LOVE LOVE them!
