      Prince didn't give her this song. Their label did, without his permission (labels don't need permission because they own your artwork and your persona as a performer). She cries every time she sings this song. When she’s singing it she’s singing to her mother that passed away. So the emotion in it is so very real. For me this is the best version of this song. Thx my brother for reacting to this one. And I would also like to add her voice is heavenly like her beautiful face. Totally agree and understand you taking a moment to appreciate that. ✌️

      Yes and, according to Sinéad O’connor in her video with Dr. Phil, her mother was very mean and abusive to her. Yet she loves her Mom dearly and can't wait to see her again. ruclips.net/video/_H1DsWsKLE8/видео.html

      I think of my dear departed mother (five years this month) now everytime I hear this song so I can understand that. I was lucky to have a very loving mother though. In her case, her mother was abusive but I feel like she had mental issues and Sinead understood that and forgave her for it. Very sad, and I think her tears are probably in wishing things had just been different.

    This is one of the greatest breakup songs ever written - the strength of her performance is the anger and frustration paired equally with the sorrow and loss. You can see the hopelessness and bitterness mixed with the love and grief, all at the same time. The end of a relationship is filled with extremely complex and mixed emotions, and I don't think any song catches it like this one.

    • @mattstagger

    • @toddstevens13
      @toddstevens13 3 года назад +2

      Not a break up song, not with a Lover anyway. It is her talking to her mother who abused her in every respect, thus the Mama who planted the flowers in the backyard. It is a cathartic awakening. As a fellow abused, she had no way to understand what was happening to her, she just knew she had to eventually get away. Now as adult, she is finally ready to forgive, having dealt with the intense pain, sadness, emptiness knowing that she should of not be treated as she was, she (like most victims) as a child was still desperate for Love from her abuser. You are bang on the anger and frustration is part of her coming towards acceptance, and her realization of all the sorrow and loss she had to go through to become a functioning adult, still wanting Love from her parent, even though the pain given. She finally was ready to forgive her abuser, and become a fully functioning Adult within as well as outwardly.

But looking back at Sinead, or Annie Lennox, I now look at their styles more as courageous for breaking norms, even if the deeper reasons for some might be darker than that.

      To be fair, many of her own songs are bad. Nothing great to them and if she wasn't known or had a 'look' (or politics) or did this song, very few people would even know who she is today. Just going by her own music, she would have gone away by 1995, which was not uncommon at all. Endless female (and male) singers/bands were dead in the water by the 1990s if not 1980s (depending on when they started and their style). Even Queen didn't really make it beyond 1991. I think she's more talented than most of her songs show, and she has a great voice. Her version of this song is a masterpiece, though. I need to check out more of her songs to see if I just picked the bad ones or not.
